Backing up the SCS File System

If this is an upgrade, you should back up the files that are on the SCS Workstation. If the site is using the Document Library for document storage, you should create a backup Tape of your Document Library. If this is an upgrade from Version 4.32 or Version 4.82, you should create at least three backup Tapes. Backing up the Document Library is time consuming. The larger the Document Library, the longer it will take for the files to save to Tape. Appendix B OSLoad Notes describes the latest disk partition options that are supported. Refer to this appendix to verify that the current configuration still exists. If the configuration no longer exists, contact your service support provider. If this is a new installation, this section is not necessary.

Creating a Full Backup

NEW INSTALL

UPGRADE FROM 4.32 or 4.82

UPGRADE FROM 05.00.04

A full backup saves every file in the selected system. If you plan to change the partition configuration of your Hard Drive(s) or if the SCS has two Hard Drives, the Document Library will be removed completely. You should create at least three backup Tapes to ensure that you do not lose this information. Backing up the Document Library is time consuming. The larger the Document Library, the longer it will take for the files to save to Tape. If this is an upgrade from Version 4.32 or Version 4.82 and the site stores documents in the Document Library, you must make at least three backups of the Document Library to ensure that you do not lose this information permanently. This procedure is critical since the partition size of the Document Library will change when the operating system is loaded. Put each backup on a separate Tape.

4 To backup all of the files on the system:

It may take more than one hour to backup all of the mount directories. Since you can only back up one file system at a time, you should stay near the machine to monitor the progress of each file system that you are saving. ! 1. Tell the system administrator to notify system users that you will be doing a backup of the system. The system administrator should run a file system check or reboot the system if neither activity has been performed recently. ! 2. From the Restore/Backup Utility window, right-click Edit and select Add Backup. The Add Backup window appears. ! 3. Insert a write-enabled Tape into the Tape Drive. See Figure 3-1 on page 3-2. ! 4. Right-click the Mount Directory drop-down menu and select a mount directory to back up. ! 5. Make other appropriate changes to the Add Backup window. ! 6. Click Apply. The system checks the Tape for data. If data exists on the Tape, a message appears asking if you would like to overwrite it. If this message appears, click Confirm. A new command tool appears. Status messages appear as the backup progresses. It may take some time for the Network Imaging Systems built-in Tape Drive to save the data. Allow sufficient time for the operation to complete, but stay near the machine to monitor the progress. The backup is complete when the following message appears in the command tool: Hit [Return] to continue

OSLoad Notes
During the installation of the operating system, the OSLoad release number is archived in the /usr/srv/lib/version/OSLoad directory. During the installation of the operating system, several useful log files are generated in the /var/sadm/system/logs directory. The /etc/release file contains information about the version of the Solaris operating system loaded on the SCS. The Operating System Software CD is an extension of Suns standard Solaris Install CD. The Operating System Software CD has been customized to ease its deployment, uphold specific SCS requirements by unconditionally preconfiguring and automating the Hard Drive partitioning process, and deliver an SCS-specific system/user environment.

Key Features

Customized Operating System Software CD: Solaris operating system. Built-in SCS hardware configuration. Hard Drive partitioning options for standard Hard Drive configurations. Support for configurations with two Hard Drives.

Specialized system/user environment: Establishes name service as none. Establishes the root password. Establishes roots shell as csh, with customized .cshrc and .login files. Establishes roots default window manager and desktop. Disables auto power management. Archives OSLoad version number.

Installs additional packages for custom hardware support. Installs additional patches.

Partitioning Hard Drives

The operating system software allows you to repartition your Hard Drive(s) during the installation or upgrade of your Network Imaging System. Table B-1 and the information that follows details the possible partition configurations and the recommendations for partitioning based on how the site will use the Network Imaging System.

Table B-1 Hard Drive configuration

Release 5.01 Version 05.01.04

OSLoad Notes

Use the following information to determine how to partition the Hard Drive(s): 50/50 is recommended if the site: Stores documents in the Document Library. Prints jobs that are submitted over the network.

A big Spool Area is recommended if the site: Prints multiple large jobs (greater than 500 MB) at the same time. Keeps documents in the Print Servers print queues or archive queues for extended periods. Performs View and Assemble functions on documents with many pages (greater than 1000). If the site performs View and Assemble functions and if the Document Library contains many documents that have greater than 1000 pages, both the Document Library and the Spool Area must be large. In this case, you should choose 50/50. In order to meet the resource needs of this workflow, you may have to add a second Hard Drive to systems which have only one Hard Drive.

A big Spool Area is not recommended on a single Hard Drive system if the site: Uses the Document Library. Has a configuration other than Printer-only.

A big Document Library is recommended if the site: Uses the Print/Store or Scan/Store functions extensively. Stores many jobs, or large jobs, that are sent over the network into the Document Library.

Big Document Library is not recommended on a single Hard Drive system if the site: Prints multiple large jobs (greater than 500 MB) at the same time. Keeps documents in the Print Servers print queues or archive queues for extended periods. Performs View and Assemble functions on documents with many pages (greater than 1000).

OSLoad Notes

When you decide how you want to repartition the Hard Drive(s), follow the appropriate procedure for installing or upgrading your SCS Workstation. For more information, see Table 1-2 on page 1-4. When you load the operating system software, be sure to specify the desired partition configuration. If you are using the OSLoad to change the Hard Drive partitioning on an existing system, you will be changing the relative sizes of the Document Library and the Spool Area partitions. In this process, one will be made larger and the other will be made smaller. If the site has been using their Document Library for document storage, the OSLoad procedure instructs you to make multiple copies of the Document Library contents. If the repartitioning that you choose makes the Document Library partition smaller, the partition may not be large enough to hold all of the stored documents. Therefore, it may not be possible to successfully restore the backup copy of the Document Library into the new, smaller partition. Before repartitioning, ensure that the current contents of the Document Library partition are smaller than the intended new Document Library partition size. It is also possible to choose a partitioning scheme that results in a smaller Spool Area than is currently available on an existing system. Restoring the entire Spool Area partition (/var) into a smaller partition size is not recommended.

4 To check that the size of the Document Library is smaller than the new
partition size for the Document Library: ! 1. Right-click in the OpenWindows background and select Programs Command Tool. A command tool window appears. ! 2. Type cd /var/spool/doc_library/DocumentStorage [RETURN]. ! 3. Type du -k [RETURN]. ! 4. Write down the number that appears on the last line of the displayed results. The number is the size of the Document Library in kilobytes (KB). ! 5. Compare this value to the size of the new Document Library partition. You can find the size of the partitions, in gigabytes (GB), in Table B-1 on page B-2. One gigabyte equals one million kilobytes (1 GB = 1,000,000 KB). ! 6. Check that the current size of the Document Library, along with the site's foreseeable increase in Document Library usage, will fit into the new partition size that you have selected. If it will not fit, contact your service support provider for assistance.
