ideas of right versus left. Students will be able to distinguish top from bottom. Students will be able to count from 1-20. Approximate Time: 25 Minutes Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: Students will be able to identify right and left. Students will be able to participate in the Hokey Pokey by knowing the difference between their right and left body parts. Students will know the different parts of the body. Content Standards: K.CC.3. Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects). K.G.1. Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to. Materials/Resources/Technology: Lessson Practice 103/Counting Practice 103 Saxon Mathematics Instructional Presentation on SmartBoard Song: Hokey Pokey Implementation: Time Opening of lesson: Have students come over to the carpet table by table. Call the quietest table first. Ask them to be role models and set a good example for the other tables on how they should come over to the carpet. Compliment the students on mouths being clothes, using quiet feet, and pushing in their chairs. Remind the other students sitting down that this is how every table should come over to the carpet. As the students come over, have them stand in two rows facing forward. Tell the students to stand up straight and tall in the rows and to make sure they have room around them. Remind the students that if they are by someone that they think will distract them, to move themselves. Also tell the students that their voice needs to remain off so they can listen for directions. Once all 4 tables are standing quietly in two straight lines tell them that Today you will learn about right and left. Face the same direction as the children and hold up your right hand. Tell the students, This is my right hand. Hold up your right hand. Check to make sure all the children are holding up their right hands. Put your right hand on your right leg. Say to the students, This is my right leg. Put your right hand on your right leg. After

the children all do this tell them that you are going to play a follow-the-leader game. Procedures: Do each action as you say it. Pause after each direction and check the childrens responses. Put your right hand on top of your head. Put your right hand on your right foot. Put your right hand on your right hip. Put your right hand on your right shoulder. Put your right hand on your right knee. Point to your right ear. Now we will practice the word right by signing the song the Hokey Pokey. Stand in front of the children, facing the same direction, as you sing and act out the song the Hokey Pokey with the children. Use the right hand, right foot, and right elbow. Ask the students, Does anyone know what our other hand is called? They should answer left. Tell them, Our other hand is called our left hand. Face the same direction as the children, and hold up your left hand. Say, This is my left hand. Hold up your left hand. Check to make sure all the children are holding up their left hands. Put your left hand on your left leg. Tell the students, This is my left leg. Put your left hand on your left leg. Now lets play the follow-the-leader game again. Do each action as you say it. Pause after each direction and check the childrens responses. Put your left hand on top of your head. Put your left hand on your right foot. Put your left hand on your right hip. Put your left hand on your right shoulder. Put your left hand on your right knee. Point to your left ear. Now we will practice the word left by singing the song Hokey Pokey. Stand in front of the children, facing the same direction, as you sing and act out the song Hokey Pokey with the children. Use the left hand, left foot, and left elbow. After demonstrating how the hokey pokey works, play the real song for them to hear. Do the dance with the students and focus on them using the correct rights and lefts. After the song is finished ask the students to go sit back down in their seats. Have the teachers assistant pass out the Lesson Practice 103/Counting Practice 103. As the teachers assistant is passing out the papers, pull up the Instructional Presentation for Saxon Mathematics on the SmartBoard. Click on lesson 103. Once every student has a paper, double check that they all have their name on their paper. Read aloud the directions to the children step by step. Ask children for input on answers for every box. While the students are working, circulate and check the childrens papers as the work. Once they all finish the front side, tell them to Turn over your paper. Count by 1s from 0 to 20 as you connect the dots. First use your

finger to connect the dots, and then use your pencil. You may use the numbers at the top of the paper to help you. Circulate and check the childrens papers as they work. Summary/Closing: As the students are connecting the dots from 0-20 walk around with a red pen or a stamp to correct the backside of the paper. Tell the students that once they have a stamp or star that they can turn their papers in the blue bin. Student Assessment: The teacher will be informally assessing the students while they are holding up their rights and lefts. Informal assessment will also take place while circulating the room while they are doing the worksheet. Although a grade is not taken on the worksheet, the worksheet will be sent home for parent review.
