General
This course is an initiative of the Dutch Graduate School on Engineering Mechanics. Research groups from different universities (TU/e, UT and TUD) are actively contributing to this course. The course is part of the 3TU Engineering Mechanics training program for PhD students. As part of this program a series of graduate courses is organized, related to the following research themes: Computational and Experimental Mechanics of Materials Structural Dynamics and Control Reliability and Optimization

Lecturers
Delft University of Technology Dr.ir. E.L. Jansen Prof.dr.ir. D. Rixen Eindhoven University of Technology Dr.ir. R.H.B. Fey Prof.dr. H. Nijmeijer Dr.ir. N. van de Wouw University of Twente Dr.ir. P.J.M. van der Hoogt ETH Zurich Dr.ir. R.I.Leine

Objective
The course Nonlinear Dynamics highlights the fact that essentially all dynamical systems encountered in the real world are to some extend nonlinear, meaning that their description as differential equations contains nonlinear terms. Such nonlinearities appear in various ways, such as through frictional terms, coriolis and centrifugal terms, large amplitude effects, or other structural nonlinearities. The nonlinearities make that standard linear dynamics not always suffices for the analysis and understanding of nonlinear mechanical (or biological, economic, physical) systems. Moreover, a key feature of the course is to investigate and study parameter-dependency of a system, i.e. to investigate the stability/instability of equilibria or periodic solutions under the influence of certain parameters. Various examples and laboratory illustrations will be given during the course, and these will also be used for hands-on exercises. Students who attend the course will at the end have a proper knowledge on (in-)stability of complex nonlinear dynamic systems.

Lecture notes
Lecture notes will be distributed during the course.

Poster session
An informal poster session will be organized on the first day of the course. This session aims to share all challenges in NONLINEAR DYNAMICS from the perspective of the participants, providing a clear view of the background of all related research projects and individuals. All participants are invited to prepare a poster and present it on the first day.

Prerequisites
