Trinidad and Tobago has made progress in reducing child mortality rates. In 2008, the leading causes of death among children under 5 were pneumonia (14%), diarrhea (17%), and malaria (22%). Between 1990 and 2010, the under-5 mortality rate declined from 76 to 35 deaths per 1000 live births. However, rates remain higher than regional averages.
