Evaluating the reasons and consequences of smoking among young generation of Eastern University:
Smoking is a practice where a substance, most commonly tobacco, is burned and the smoke tasted or inhaled. This is primarily done as a form of recreational drug use, as

combustion releases the active substances in drugs such as nicotine . It can also be done as a part of rituals, to induce trances and spiritual enlightenment. The most common method of smoking today is through cigarettes. Smoking is one of the most common forms of recreational drug use. The history of smoking can be dated to as early as 5000 BC, and has been recorded in many different cultures across the world as if in Bangladesh. This report is made to evaluate the reasons and consequences of smoking among young generation of Eastern University, Bangladesh. Most of the people who smoke are students and their age is between 19 to 27. Among these some of the students are part-time job holder. Their monthly disposable income is around 4000 taka. The students those who have no disposable income they have an autonomous consumption expenditure which do not vary with income. From our sample size most of the students who do not have disposable income have a autonomous expenditure of around 3000taka . Maximum students are single according to their marital status. One of the most important subject of this report is, what was the age of the smoker students when they started to smoke. Most of the students started to smoke from the age of 14 or 15. A few of the students started to smoke from the age of 11 or 12 which are exceptions. Most of the students smoke for their mental refreshment. Most of the cases, there are some factors which influence students to smoke such as curiousness, friends inspiration, mental pressure, family problems, dumped in love, frustration, loneliness, bad results in exams and many more. The students who smoke also face some problem because of smoking like time to time fever, headache, breathing problem, close to lung cancer, increasing cough and above all destroying health. Most of the smoker students smoke 11 to 15 cigarettes in a day which costs 1500taka in a month. Some smokes 7 to 10 cigarettes in a day which costs 1000 taka per month and some smoke above 25 cigarettes in a day which costs around 3500 taka. 95 percent smokers of our sample size smokes Benson & Hedges, 4 percent smokes Gold Leaf and 1 percent of the smokers smoke other brand cigarettes. Almost all the students know that smoking is harmful for health. After knowing this also they smoke because they just badly got addicted to smoking, they just cannot leave it, they feel that smoking lessens their depression or mental pressure. They just cannot stay without smoking. Some of the students have tried to leave smoking. Around 65 percent did not yet tried to leave smoking. From those who have tried to leave smoking, 100 percent that means almost all of them are unsuccessful to leave smoking. Some of the smokers who tried to leave smoking kept smoking stop for maximum 10 days. They just cannot leave smoking because, if they do not smoke they have to suffer headache or they cannot stay without smoking because nicotine is highly mixed with their blood.

Most smokers begin during adolescence or early adulthood. Smoking has elements of risktaking and rebellion, which often appeal to young people. The presence of high-status models and peers may also encourage smoking. Because teenagers are influenced more by their peers than by adults, attempts by parents, schools, and health professionals at preventing people from trying cigarettes are often unsuccessful.

The results showed that 90 of the students are regular smokers. Advertising may also have been a important influence on students since smokers in this group could better identify tobacco advertisements compared with their nonsmoking peers. No significant association was found between respondents' knowledge of the health risks of smoking and their actual smoking behavior.

Conclusion and recommendation:

By now, everybody should know that smoking is harmful and can also lead to death. Smoking can lead to emphysema and asthma. These are only two of the many

consequences of smoking. Smoking is not only harmful for the user, but it also affects the harmless people around the user that inhale the filthy smoke. This is called second-hand smoke. All parts of the body are affected when you smoke. Your face, your finger tips, and many others. Smoking can make you also have wrinkles and it tightens your skin. So, when you are 16 and still smoking by 20, you will look 35. Smoking is now recognized as a major public health problem in the developing world. This study demonstrates that in Bangladesh, smoking is very common among middle-class male teenagers and even more prevalent among youths from university level. Clearly, local and national programs that draw on relevant knowledge from other countries, but are appropriate to Bangladesh, need to be developed to tackle a major epidemic.
