Vodafone wins Rs 11,000 crore tax case against Govt Suresh Kalmadi granted bail
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday ruled in favour of British telecom major Vodafone in the biggest tax dispute case in Indian corporate history. The company had challenged the Bombay High Court order asking Vodafone company to pay income tax of Rs 11,000 crore on a deal abroad. The apex court directed the tax department to return Rs 2,500 crore deposited by Vodafone in compliance of its interim order within two months. "The government has no jurisdiction over Vodafone's purchase of mobile assets in India as the transaction took place in Cayman Islands between HTIL & Vodafone," Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia said. He said for the stability of economic operations, investors should know where they stand. He added that Hutch Essar, whose Indian operations were acquired by Vodafone, was not a fly-by-night operator and was in India since 1994 and had contributed Rs 20,242 crore by way of direct and indirect taxes. Justice Kapadia delivered the majority judgment alone with Justice Swatanter Kumar. However, Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan differed with the judgment. In 2007, when Vodafone took over Hutchison International, the I-T department had slapped a tax notice for non-payment of dues saying the Contd. on page 5 NEW DELHI, JAN 19, 2012 : Supporters of Pune MP, Suresh Kalmadi, welcomed the news of Delhi High Court granting him bail in the Commonwealth Games scams by shouting slogans at the Congress Bhavan . January 18 is a date that will live in ignorance, as Wikipedia started a 24-hour blackout of its English-language articles, joining other sites in a protest of pending U.S. legislation aimed at shutting down sites that share pirated movies and other content. Reddit.com shut down its social news service for 12 hours. Other sites made their views clear without cutting off surfers. Google blacked out the logo on its home page, directing surfers to a page where they could add their names to a petition against the bills. Local listings site Craigslist took a middle route, changing its local home pages to a black screen directing users to an anti-legislation page. After 10 seconds, a link to the main site appears on the home page, but some surfers missed that and were fooled into thinking the whole site was blacked out. The Internet companies are concerned that the Stop
Online Piracy Act in the House and the Protect Intellectual Property Act under consideration in the Senate, if passed, could be used to target legitimate sites where users share content. The 24-hour Wikipedia blackout is an unprecedented move for the online encyclopedia. The decision was reached after polling the community of contributors, but dissenters say political advocacy undermines the site's mission as a neutral source. However, it's not complete: the block can be bypassed by changing

Three Parties Win Entry Rare Tomb of Woman found in Egypt to Kazakh Parliament
Jan 16, 2012: In Kazakhstan, three political parties will enter the nation's Parliament, where every seat is currently held by the ruling party. Election results released gave the probusiness Ak Zhol party and the largely pro-govt Communist People's Party at least seven percent of the vote each. Under Kazakhstan's new election law, the second-place finisher automatically gets seats. But any party that gets at least seven percent of the vote also wins seats. President Nur Otan party won about 80 percent of the vote. Nazarbayev has been Kazakhstan's only President since it gained independence in 1991. In another development, a special session of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan elected nine deputies in the Mazhilis, the lower house of the Kazakh parliament. Other 98 deputies in the 107-seat lower house were elected from seven parties in Sunday's Parliamentary votes.

The memogate scandal has only served to add to the woes of the beleaguered Pakistan government which has been trying every trick in its bag to avert graft cases against its party boss and President Asif Ali Zardari from being pursued since past two years. The court had repeatedly asked the government to reopen the graft cases since it threw out the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) that extended immunity to politicians and bureaucrats from prosecution in graft cases, as illegal in 2009. Former president Pervez Musharraf had issued the ordinance as part of a power sharing deal with former PM Benazir Bhutto in 2007. Her widower, Zardari, as the main beneficiary of the deal, took over her party and was later elected as the president. In addition, a fresh slew of allegations have surface against Gilani in connection with the appointment of Adnan Khwaja as chairman of the state-run Oil and Gas Development Company even though Khwaja had already been convicted by court. Pakistan's main anti-corruption watchdog is considering a proposal for filing a case of misuse of authority against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani under which he could face a prison term of 14 years if convicted. NEWS IN BRIEF
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has clarified that interest rates on small savings schemes, except the PPF, will remain fixed throughout the term of schemes. In a circular, RBI said interest rate for small savings will be declared on April 1 every year and will remain valid till the maturity of the scheme. The circular has been released as a clarification after it observed that news items are appearing in media conveying an impression that the interest rates on small savings schemes linked to government securities are floating in nature and will undergo change depending on the yields. look natural. Smudge the line just a bit. 8. Know your best feature and play it up : What feature do people comment on most? Play it up. If you're told you have Angelina Jolie lips, make sure to wear gloss and play with bold lipstick colors. If it's your eye color people love, find eyeshadow colors that complement them and make sure to wear mascara. Also, know what color shirts look best on you and go shopping. 9. Scrubs are great for dry skin : If you have dry, itchy skin in winter, invest in a scrub and handmitts and scrub away in the bathtub. Make sure to slather on a thick moisturizer afterward. For dry, callousy feet, buy a pumice stone. They work better than any of the other wimpy options on the market. 10. Remember: Beauty is mostly internal : Think about a girl you know who's overweight yet all the guys love her. Why? Because she's confident. If you aren't wearing makeup and your toes haven't been repainted in weeks, if you're happy and smiling you will still be 10 times prettier than the mopey cheerleader sitting next to you.
NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen urged Russia on Jan. 19 to refrain from building up its military near the alliance's borders, saying it was a concern. Rasmussen questioned Russian moves to bolster its forces in its Kaliningrad territory, which borders NATO members Lithuania and Poland, part of Moscow's Cold Warera stamping ground. "These Russian statements are, of course, a matter of concern for NATO allies," Rasmussen said. "It is a complete waste of Russian financial resources because it is a buildup of offensive military capacities directed against an artificial enemy, an enemy that doesn't exist. "NATO has no intention whatsoever to attack Russia," he added, speaking alongside Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite. Moscow has warned that it plans to deploy Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad, and earlier this month, Russian media reported that an S400 Triumph anti-aircraft missile system would go into service there in April. Russia repeatedly has said it will be forced to take additional measures if it fails to agree with NATO on a missile defense shield.

The U.S. insists a shield is needed against potential threats from Iran, but Russia counters that antimissile facilities planned in Poland would undermine its own security. Rasmussen said it was time for a reality check. "It doesn't make sense to build up offensive military capacities in the Kaliningrad region," he said. "I would encourage the Russians to face a new reality. We are not enemies. We are not adversaries. We should be partners, and it would be of mutual benefit if we develop peaceful cooperation." Lithuania and fellow Baltic states Estonia and Latvia are nervous about Russian military moves. They won independence in 1991 after five decades of Soviet rule,
joined NATO and the EU in 2004, and have strained relations with Moscow. "Russian actions do not increase trust between NATO and Russia," Grybauskaite said. "We invite Russia to be open for dialogue, to see new threats and realities, and to seek smart defense." With a population of 6.3 million and professional forces of 20,500, the Baltic states lack enough fighter planes to police their skies. Other NATO members therefore take turns doing so, from a base in Lithuania. Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia want to extend the air patrol accord, which expires in 2014. Rasmussen said he was hopeful NATO's upcoming summit in Chicago would approve a "long-term arrangement."

DHAKA, JAN 18: The BSF has suspended eight jawans after a video, showing a Bangladeshi being stripped, kicked and beaten in West Bengal's Murshidabad district along the Indo-Bangladesh border, the video was telecasted on Wednesday on some channels. The video showed that a group of BSF jawans beat up a young Bangladeshi ruthlessly near the border after he allegedly refused to give them bribe. The victim was seen on the ground with his hands and feet tied as the men in uniform tortured and stripped him naked.'The assault reportedly took place in Murshidabad district in West Bengal close to the Bangladesh border',.The BSF men allegedly suspected their victim was a cow smuggler. When they caught him, he allegedly refused to pay them bribe. They retaliated viciously. Eight Border Security Force jawans have been suspended over the incident. The suspended personnel have been identified as Constables Virender Tiwari, V S Victor, Dhananjay Kumar, Anand Singh, Amar Jyoti, Sanjeev Kumar, Suresh Chand and Sunil Kumar. BSF suspended 8 Jawans India hopes to unveil the winner of a $12-billion fighter jet deal
NEW DELHI : India hopes to unveil within two weeks the winner of a $12-billion fighter jet deal for which France's Dassault and the Eurofighter consortium are on a final short list, the air force said Jan. 17. "Right now we have to do the selection for who is going to be the short-listed vendor," Indian Air Force chief N.A.K. Browne said in New Delhi. "I am hopeful that in another two weeks time, we will be able to short list the name," Browne told reporters on the sidelines of a military function, The contract is one of the biggest under consideration in the global defense aviation industry at the moment. The air force chief said final commercial negotiations would only start after India announced the lowest bidder.Officials say "life-cycle" maintenance costs of each plane will determine the winner of the deal. The contract is for the outright purchase of 18 combat aircraft with another 108 to be built in India with options to acquire more. "The eight personnel have been identified and suspended pending inquiry," Deputy Inspector General (DIG) at BSF headquarters, Vikas Chandra, said."A news video clipping showing violent and illegal conduct by three/four men in uniform in the area of Murshidabad, West Bengal has been taken note of by BSF headquarters. A detailed staff court-of-inquiry has been ordered to fix responsibility and take action under BSF Act and rules for this misconduct," BSF PRO T Acharya said. Acharya added that the Commandant of 105 battalion to which the suspended personnel belong, has been asked to immediately visit the spot and ascertain full details of the incident. One theory on how the video came to light is that a cyber cafe owner downloaded the footage from a jawan's cellphone when the jawan visited the cafe to download music. Another version is that BSF members circulated the video as a warning to other cow smugglers.

Among all the leading search engines, Google has always been about finding the best search results for you. Search is pretty amazing at finding that one needle in a haystack of billions of web-pages, images, videos, news etc. but is still limited to a universe of web-pages available publicly. Google search will have a veneer of personalization henceforth wherein Google will factor in the social factor as well while throwing up search results. Searches from now on would be more related to 'you' and the people around you. It all started in October 2009, at the Web 2.0 Summit, when Microsoft, which by the way is a major investor in Facebook, also announced a global partnership with the social networking giant that would start by bringing Facebook status updates to Bing search results, but didn't reveal when it was

coming, due to large users associated with Facebook. Besides this, Bing started serving up Twitter search results in real-time. In fact, Google announced a deal with Twitter the next day, which unfortunately didn't cracked due to user privacy issues. Ever since then, strictly on the social front, Microsoft has been working hard with Facebook and Twitter while Google has been failing with both. The only reason Facebook has integration with Bing and not with Google is that Bing agreed to terms for protecting user privacy that Google would not. Those privacy protections involved restricting social information only to people who users want to share with; basically what Google has now provided for users of its own service after seven months. Yes, it was Google+ launched in July, 2011, considered earlier as "The Facebook Killer", but disappoints public expectations and unable to reduce the fan following statistics of Facebook to much extent. As per Larry Page, Google CEO, "Google+ was only the first part of Google's social ambitions the next step is to light up all of Google". Though rest ambitions can be sensed from their past deals which they were failed to crack, but it is not necessary to purchase candies in the market if you have your own candy factory. Now taking the advantage of its flagship product, Google Search, the company is ready to hit the Bingo with its new product wiz "Search plus Your World (SPYW)", released on January 10, but search engine optimization experts have
dubbed it "Search Plus". This will be available with the actual goal of releasing Google+ in the past; it involves the three new additions in search: "Personal results", "Profiles in Search" and "People & Pages". SPYW allows users to see personalised search results, including their friends in the social network Google+, as well as people, pages and profiles in the network, all from its own search. So, you can say it will mark a startling transformation of Google Search into an amplifier of social content. SPYW, however, only works when users are logged in to their Google account. After launching the Search plus Your World option, a new button will appear on the search result page, which will allow users to toggle between results from the web and the new option. The search quality guru Amit Singhal on his official Google blog says, "We understand not only content, but also people and relationships. This rich personal content is
currently missing from your search experience. You should also be able to find your own stuff on the web, the people you know and things they've shared with you, as well as the people you don't know but might want to... all from one search box". The results can be easily added from Google+ and also it may furnish users frequently discussing the subject you're looking for. But the most important point is, what do average Google users think -- and what are they saying on Google+ itself? Experts understand that "Search plus Your World" may cause some privacy worries, as private content may appear as if it is exposed publicly. It might also cause concern by making private content more visible to friends. At last, it is the common web user who can decide his comfort with Google+ and SPYW in the upcoming time. The only thing which Google can do is keeping fingers cross so that situations like first phase of Google+ may not repeat again.

Light Show: Vast glowing rings, called auroras, often appear far above the North and South Poles. These rings can be more than 12,000 miles (19,312 kilometers) around. People who live near polar regions see the auroras as giant curtains of shimmering light in a variety of colors. This beautiful effect occurs when charged particles, shot past the Earth by the sun at more than a million miles an hour are caught in the Earth's magnetic field and funneled to the Poles. When these particles hit gases in our atmosphere, the gases give off light. People in the far northern and southern regions can enjoy the greatest natural light shows on Earth. Barbara's Boxes Barbara has boxes in three sizes: large, standard, and small. She puts 11 large boxes on a table. She leaves some of these boxes empty, and in all the other boxes she puts 8 standard boxes. She leaves some of these standard boxes empty, and in all the other standard boxes she puts 8 (empty) small boxes. Now, 102 of all the boxes on the table are empty. The Question: How many boxes has Barbara used in total? Solution to: Barbara's Boxes By putting 8 boxes in a box, the total number of empty boxes increases by 8 - 1 = 7. If we call x the number of times that 8 boxes have been put in a box, we know that 11 + 7x = 102. It follows that x=13. In total, 11 + 13 8 = 115 boxes have been used.

These tips can help you follow that advice while still enjoying the foods you eat. 1.Eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods. You need more than 40 different nutrients for good health, and no single food supplies them all. Your daily food selection should include bread and other whole-grain products; fruits; vegetables; dairy products; and meat, poultry, fish and other protein foods. 2.Enjoy plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Mining refers to the process of extracting metals and minerals from the earth. Gold, silver, diamond, iron, coal and uranium are just a few of the vast array of metals and minerals that are obtained by this process. In fact, mining is the source of all the substances that cannot be obtained by industrial processes or through agriculture. Mining reaps huge profits for the companies that own them and provides employment to a large number of people. It is also a huge source of revenue for the government. Despite its economic importance, the question that how does mining affect the environment is a pressing environmental issue. Effects of Mining on Environment Effect on Land Deforestation: Mining requires large areas of land to be cleared so that the earth could be dug into by the miners. For this reason, largescale deforestation is required to be carried out in the areas where mining has to be done. Besides clearing the mining area, vegetation in the adjoining areas also needs to be cut in order to construct roads and residential facilities for the mine workers. The human population brings along with it other activities that harm
the environment. Loss of Biodiversity: The forests that are cleared for mining purposes are home to a large number of organisms. Indiscriminate clearing of the forests lead to loss of habitat of a large number of animals. This puts the survival of a large number of animal species at stake. The cutting down of trees in itself is a big threat to a number of plants and trees growing in the forests. Pollution: Despite measures being taken to release the chemical waste into the nearby rivers through pipes, a large amount of chemicals still leak out onto the land. This changes the chemical composition of the land. Besides this, since the chemicals are poisonous, they make the soil unsuitable for plants to grow. Also, the organisms that live in the soil find the polluted environment hostile for their survival. Effect on Water Pollution: Chemicals like mercury, cyanide, sulfuric acid, arsenic and methyl mercury are used in various stages of mining. Most of the chemicals are released into nearby water bodies that leads to water pollution. In spite of tailings (pipes) being used to dispose these chemicals into the water

Prof DS Jamwal, president of the Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA), told "Dr Ishar, a professor from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, originally hails from Poonch. He had settled down in Kathua, before shifting to Amritsar. He is a JU product and we hope he will understand our issues in a better way." "Various stakeholders have been demanding a local Vice-Chancellor for several years. He (Dr Ishar) is a local and has worked in another university, so we expect him to have a productive tenure," he added. Vikas Sharma, president of the National Secular Forum, said it was an achievement for the student community, as they had been seeking the appointment of a new V-C with a local background. "We have always opposed extension to the V-C and demanded someone with a better hold on our issues and concerns. Above all, we had been demanding a V-C with a neutral approach and we think our efforts have borne fruit," said Vikas. "Hostels are a shambles and hardly anyone has paid heed to the issue. We hope the new V-C, who has studied in the JU, will comprehend the dilemmas," said Vikas. Rakesh Chib, chief of the Jammu University Research Scholars Executive Association (JURSEA), said it was good that the university had got a new V-C within the stipulated period. He said: "We hope he will work for the betterment of the institution. It is always better if a VC handles situations in a balanced way." The Paddar Students union also hailed the decision of Governor and CM to appoint the local as VC for Jammu university. Prominent among the union include Charanjeet Thakur,Suresh Rana,Vijay Chouhan,Jaswant Rana and others. They hope that the new VC would bring improvement in the university, particularly in context of examination reforms and infrastructure development. A professor said the biggest challenge for the new Vice-Chancellor was to set a precedent of giving preference to merit. He said: "We hope the new V-C encourages the practice of selection or promotion of candidates on the basis of merit in the university." "The most important challenge that the new incumbent faces is to increase the financial resources of the university. He needs to focus on the schemes to generate more funds for the overall development," he added. People from various sections also felt that the new V-C should emerge as a popular administrator. Jammu Varsity's Baba Jitto Hostel lacks Mess facility and Wi-Fi connection
JAMMU: The Baba Jitto Men' Hostel of Jammu University with a capacity of accommodating nearly 200 students was inaugurated and thrown open for admission to students and scholars last year. But the boarders have not been provided mess facility and Wi-Fi connection so far. The boarders said that they have been staying in the hostel for last 6-7 months without mess facility and Wi-Fi connection. They complained that they were assured that these facilities would be provided shortly but still the students are waiting till the authorities arrange these facilities. Mostly the scholars are facing problems due to unavailability of Wi-Fi connection. They have to even go outside where they can get their laptops connected to Wi-Fi under such an extremely cold condition. Their research work has also been affected a lot.
In Hyderabad they had an opportunity to visit the Air Force Academy besides visiting Jama Masjid of Hyderabad and the Charminar. The children witnessed a Laser Show at Lumbini Park and enjoyed a boat ride in Hussain Sagar Lake. An interaction with General Officer Commanding 54 Infantry Division was also organized at Secunderabad. really a difficult period for us and Captain Mahinder Singh Dhoni. India's catastrophic performance in the tours of England and Australia arise a question who is responsible for that? I believe that Domestic pitches are responsible for the poor performance of our Indian team at Perth. We all know that Australia and England have the best pitches in the world where both batsmen and the bowlers get equal of dominating the day. Batsmen alone cannot win the match for the team. Not knowing the cause is one thing and not taking any steps to rectify the disorder is another. For an entire decade our cricket system ordered doctored pitches as a tonic for a defeated team and the team never disappointed. But now there is a need to be change in the cricket system. A common suggestion is to prepare sporting
pitches for a domestic series. This will rob us of the opportunity of making up for abroad losses through home victory and disappoint the fans but in the long run will eventually prepare the upcoming cricketers to compete on international pitches and win. The second idea is to prepare sporting tracks for our domestic cricket. Nothing could be more welcome than that except for the risk of running out of batsmen who can play spin and bowlers who can tweak the ball. Nonetheless one finds that something quick and far reaching must be done. The least we can do is to give our batsmen more exposure to fast tracks and hostile bowling with regularity. The step would help our players in their transition phase. What our sportsperson need is motivation to keep going to play matches in all set of conditions, not false boost of morale through doctored pitches!

For the record, India reported its last case of polio on January 13 last year, from Kolkata in West Bengal. Polio endemic states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar too have recorded a constant drop in the polio cases from 2008 onwards with zero case recorded in the year 2011 in these two states. To be totally polio free, the World Health Organisation (WHO) stipulates that there should be no case of paralytic poliomyelitis by wild polio virus in last three calendar years. So, if there are no polio cases by wild polio virus in 2012 and subsequent years we can call that India has eradicated poliomyelitis in 2015. The challenges are on other front too. Once wild polio virus is eradicated from the country, the major issue of concern is that of acute poliomyelitis caused by vaccine virus itself. The cases are occurring even now and outnumbering wild poliomyelitis cases even in India. Another traditional polio endemic state Bihar has also recorded a massive drop in polio cases from 2008 onwards. A total of 233 polio cases were reported in 2008 in Bihar and the number fell to just nine in 2010. Last year the state went incident free. Foreign Players to Get Stake in Indian Carriers 17th Jan 2012 As the debt-laden civil aviation industry battles hard to stay afloat, the government said on Tuesday that it would kickstart the process to allow foreign airlines 49 per cent stake in Indian carriers, signalling a major shift in the UPA government's policy. The decision was taken at a meeting here between Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh. The meeting also decided to immediately release Rs.150 crore for the payment of a portion of pending salaries and allowances of Air India employees, including pilots. The move to permit foreign airlines to pick up stake in domestic scheduled carriers should come as a major relief to debt-ridden airlines such as Kingfisher. According to the existing rule, anyone, except a foreign airline, can pick up equity in scheduled domestic airlines. The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotions (DIPP) has already floated a draft note for inter ministerial consultation on investment by foreign airlines. However, the note favours allowing only 26 per cent FDI. PM promises top industrialists to solve the crisis in power sector 19th Jan 2012 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh cheered an anxious bunch of top industrialists, from Anil Ambani to Ratan Tata, with a promise to take immediate, decisive action to solve the power sector's problems in a time-bound manner and convert the looming crisis into an opportunity. The high-profile delegation included Ashok Hinduja, Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal, Prashant Ruia of the Essar group, GMR's GM Rao, Gautam Adani, Sajjan and Naveen Jindal as well as Lanco Infratech chairman Madhusudan Rao and GVK Group's Sanjay Reddy. The industrialists are seeking higher supply of coal and natural gas, faster environmental clearances, distribution reforms, greater access to funds, and support for ultra mega power projects that are in trouble because imported coal prices have risen sharply making their operations unviable. After the meeting, the prime minister told them that the committee of secretaries would prepare a 90-day revival plan which will have monthly milestones, a member of the business delegation said. The group of CEOs will meet the PM again after 90 days to review progress, while empowered groups of ministers on gas, coal and ultra mega power projects will meet shortly to clear pending issues, he added.
Army chief Gen VK Singh on Monday became the first serving chief in the military's history to drag the government to the Supreme Court to have his year of birth declared as 1951 as opposed to 1950 as fixed by the Centre. Revealing his intention to fight to the finish, Singh filed a writ petition under Article 32 of the Constitution (ensuring the right to legal remedy), accusing the government of violating his fundamental right by not allowing him to change his year of birth from 1950 to 1951. The chief did not move the Armed Forces Tribunal as the quasi-judicial body's members are junior to him in rank. Filed by counsels Puneet Bali and Prabhjit Jauhar, the writ sought quashing of the defence ministry's orders of July 21, 2011 and December 30, 2011, turning down Singh's claim that he was born in 1951. Singh's form for admission to the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla carries 1950 as his year of birth, in contrast to 1951 in his matriculation certificate. The chief has claimed that the error in recording his year of birth as 1950 in the UPSC form was rectified after the commission wrote a letter to his father on June 18, 1966, seeking a clarification. Grievance Redressal Ombudsman in Educational Institutions Soon 18th Jan 2012 The Centre has decided to have a grievance redressal mechanism in higher educational institutions. In a statement issued in New Delhi on Monday, Human Resource Development Ministry said the mechanism, which was likely to come into effect from the coming academic session, would require every institute to constitute an ombudsman. The Ombudsman will have the jurisdiction to hear grievances concerning denial of admission, non-observance of declared merit in admission, non-observance of applicable regulations for reservation, withholding of documents and non-refund of fees in case of withdrawal of admission, discrimination and other such matters concerning students in pursuit of studies in the institution. The statement said that students of both management and technical institutes, central and deemed-to-be universities will benefit from it apart from teachers of education institutions under National Council of Teachers Education. It said that the ombudsman would deliver order within one month. Anti-Climax at JLF as Rushdie Cancels Visit 20th Jan 2012 In a statement issued the festival organizers have confirmed that in the wake of recent developments, author Salman Rushdie would not be attending the DSC Jaipur literary Festival. "I have now been informed by intelligence sources in Maharashtra and Rajasthan that paid assassins from the Mumbai underworld may be on their way to Jaipur to "eliminate" me. While I have some doubts about the accuracy of this intelligence, it would be irresponsible of me to come to the Festival in such circumstances; irresponsible to my family, to the festival audience, and to my fellow writers. I will therefore not travel to Jaipur as planned", Rushdie said in a statement issued by the festival organizers. Sanjoy Roy, producer of Jaipur Litertaure Festival questioned why as a country we succumb to such pressures again and again, "We found this to be extremely sad news and we need to debate how a person's individual ideas are blocked. Why art community continues to suffer?" While some expressed anger over the issues, the mood at the festival is still upbeat. Most people are more interested in enjoying the festival.
