(6 marks) (6 marks)

State Pascals law and with a neat block diagram explain the basic concept of a hydraulic power transmission system

b)

What are the different types of fluids used in industrial hydraulics? List their important characteristics.

c) A hydraulic press has a ram of 125 mm diameter and a plunger of 12.5 mm diameter. What force is required on the plunger to raise a mass of 1000 kg on the ram? If the plunger had a stroke of 250 mm, how many strokes would be necessary to lift the weight by 1 meter? Neglecting losses and assuming that the weight moves continuously, what power would be required to drive the plunger if the weight is lifted in 12 minutes? (8 marks)

2 a) Illustrate with sketch the principle of power transmission using Pascals law. What are the merits and demerits of fluid power systems? (6 marks) b) A hydraulic testing machine is actuated by a hand pump. The hand lever has a ratio of 10 to 1 and is connected to a plunger 19 mm in diameter. The piston operating the testing head is 300 mm diameter. Calculate the intensity of pressure in the oil and the force which must be applied to the lever when the machine exerts a force of 2100 kgf. c) Write briefly about the necessity and application of fire resistant hydraulic fluids. UNIT - II 3 a) State pumping theory and explain the purpose of a pump in an industrial hydraulic system. With neat sketch explain the working principle of a gear pump. b) (8 marks) (8 marks) (6 marks)

How are the hydraulic pumps classified? Give the complete classification chart and differentiate between a Positive displacement and a non-positive displacement pump. (6 marks)

c)

The pressure difference over a hydraulic motor is 80 bar and it runs at 400 rpm. The nominal displacement is 5 cm3/rev. The overall efficiency is 85% and volumetric efficiency is 90%. Calculate the following: i) The ideal flow rate, ii) the actual flow rate,

iii) The fluid power, iv) The shaft power, and v) The shaft torque. 4 a) Explain with a neat sketch the method of cushioning of hydraulic cylinders. b) With a neat diagram explain the construction and working of Vane motor.

The flow rate available in both directions is 12 dm3/min. Calculate, assuming ideal conditions, the following: i) The system pressure needed, ii) the force with which it pulls given the same pressure. iii) The speed on the outward stroke, iv) The speed of retraction, v) The power used on outward stroke, and vi) The ideal fluid flow rate required for an outward velocity is 100mm/min.
