PART A. INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE 1- a. Write the comparison of two stroke and Fore stroke engines. b. Compare and construct Petrol and Diesel engine. 2- With neat sketch explain the Formation of exhaust emission in S I and C I engines. 3- With neat sketch explain the Lubrication system and cooling system. 4- During the trial of a single acting oil engine, cylinder diameter 200mm, stroke 280mm, working on 2 stroke cycle and firing every cycle, the following observation were made. Duration of trial =1 hour Calorific value = 44670 KJ / kg Total number of revolution = 21000 Total mass of cooling water = 495 kg Temperature of air in test room = 200c Out let temperature cooling water = 380c Total fuel used = 4.22kg Properties of hydrogen in fuel = 15 % Mean effective pressure = 2.74 bar Temperature of exhaust gases = 3700c In let temperature cooling water = 130c Air used = 135 kg

Net brake load applied to a drum of 1 m diameter. Assume Cp (gases) = 1.005 KJ / kg K, Cp (steam) = 2.093 KJ / kg K, Calculate the thermal efficiency and draw up the heat balance. 5- Following data relates to 4 cylinder four stroke petrol engine. Air fuel ratio by Weight = 16: 1, calorific value of the fuel = 45200KJ / kg, Mechanical efficiency =82 %, Air standard efficiency = 52 %, Relative efficiency = 70%, Volumetric efficiency = 78 %, stroke / bore ratio =1.25, suction conditions =1 bar and 250C, Speed = 2400rpm and power at brakes = 72 kw (i) Compression ratio (iii) Bore and stroke calculate the: (ii) Indicated thermal efficiency (IV) Brake specific fuel consumption

PART B. AIR COMPRESSOR 1- Explain Isothermal efficiency and isentropic efficiency of reciprocating compressor. 2- Compare and construct single stage and Multi stage air compressor.Discsses their advantages and Dis-advantages. 3- A single stage double acting air compressor delivers air at 7.5 bars. The pressure and temperature at the end of the suction stroke are 1bar and 25oC. It delivers 2.2 m 3 of free air per-minute when the compressor is running at 310 rpm. The clearance volume is 5% of stroke volume. The pressure and temperature of ambient air are 1.03 and 200C. Determine (a) Volumetric efficiency of the compressor. (b) Diameter and stroke of the cylinder if both are equal (c) I P of the compressor and B P if mechanical efficiency is 85 % Take Index of compression = 1.25, Index of expansion = 1.3 4-A two stage double acting air compressor operating at 200 rpm takes air- in at 1.013bar and 27oC.The diameter and stroke of L.P.cylinder are 35 cm and 38 cm respectively. The stroke of H.P. cylinder is same as L.P cylinder and clearance of both the cylinders is 4 % of the stroke. The L.P cylinder is discharges air at a pressure of 4.052bar. The air passes through the intercooler so that it enters the H.P.cylindr at27oCand 3.85 bar. Finally the air is discharged from the compressor at 15.4 bars. The compression and re-expansion in both cylinders follows the same law. Pv 1.3 = constant. Determine the (a) Brake power required to drive the compressor if mechanical is 80 % (b) The diameter of H.P. cylinder. (c) Heat rejected in intercooler 5- List all the equations of (a) IC engine (unit-2) chapter (b) Air Compressor (unit-4) chapter. NOTE: Evaluation of class notes Evaluation: PART A. and PART B.
