Camaraderie, Espirit De Corps, and loyalty to the unit are developed and maintained in several ways. This year's MCCS awards banquet utilized a very old means of stimulating pride in the unit and high morale called a Dinning-Out. The Dining-In and Dining-Out represent the more formal aspect of Air Force social life. The Dining-In is a formal dinner for military members only. The Dining-Out, on the other hand, is a relatively new custom that includes spouses and guests. Otherwise it is similar to the Dining-In. Formal military dinners are a tradition in all branches of the armed services. In the Air Force and Navy, it is the Dining-In; in the Army, the Regimental Dinner; in the Marine Corps and Coast Guard, it is Mess Night. The origin of the Dining-In is not clear. Formal dinners are rooted in antiquity. The Dining-In is so old that its beginnings have almost been lost in the shadows of antiquity.

I NFORMATION Deadline for all submissions is the 25th of the preceding month. Email submissions to jkalemis@comcast.net, editor or deliver a hardcopy. All photographs are by 1Lt. James Kalemis unless otherwise noted.

Wherever and whenever the tradition began, it made for an exciting and entertaining event to end 2006 and provided a point of levity for the more serious occasion of handing out awards. Just ask Captain "Pooteet". Mr. Vice was none other than Mr. Major, he kept me in stitches every time he checked for credentials. I am not sure that he was not meant to be a stand-up comedian, but I am glad that he finds the time to entertain the members of MCCS. I served as Madam President, reluctantly really, but in the end I enjoyed the process. Wasn't it terrific how, old dogs, like Mr. Mangano, can learn new tricks? You had to be there to appreciate the entertainment! I am sorry for those of you who missed the evening's event: Great Food, Great Friends, Great Members, and deserving awardees. I can't wait for next year. Vigilance Rules. More photos at www.kalemis.com/cap/awards06/

Outstanding Officer 2006 Major Ken Anderson Major Anderson has served as Deputy Cmdr for Cadets and the Leadership Officer. His contributions to the squadron extend to both facilitating squadron leadership sessions and conducting many activities outside the squadron. His skill in conducting leadership sessions that are educational and interesting is outstanding. His zeal in maintaining a certain level of excellence in all we do is contagious. His perseverance in devoting his time to CAP even though both his children have long left is admired. Not only is Major Anderson the example of what an exemplary officer should be, but he is an honest, caring, and kind human being that I am proud to call a friend. - 1st Lt James Kalemis

Eleven cadets from McHenry and Lake County Composite Squadrons participated in O-Flights last month. Our gratitude again to Capts Mordechai Levin and Bill Watson for flying two planes for the O-Flights and to Brian Pokuta for doing the ubiquitous paperwork. O-Flight schedules are limited, so to reserve your spot, please see Lt. Kalemis.

By Capt Corey Stohlquist Several squadron members participated on a UDF Mission last month. The original SARSAT satellite coordinates put the ELT signal in the Schaumburg area but the next coordinate put it in the Galt Airport area. I received a call from Capt Bob Becker of the Elgin Composite Squadron asking if we wanted to join his team that was in route from the Elgin area. I called other squadron qualified team members and went to Galt Airport to wait for Capt. Becker. I had previously been following the progress of the ELT search via Blackberry messages, so I was getting prepared to participate as it became local. While waiting at the airport we checked for an ELT signal on the airport itself, but not find a distress signal there.

Receiving a Find Ribbon for this mission

After Capt. Becker arrived with his team, our team of 1Lt. Esther Medina and cadets Ethan Peterman and Jared Hendler waited for the next SARSAT information that placed the ELT signal in the Spring Grove area at a private airport. The MCCS Team went in the squadron van and were able to assist in contacting the person at the airport and silencing the ELT which turned out to be an ELT that the owners were having a problem with. Major Rhonda Anderson was the Incident Commander, for this Mission. After reporting back to Major Anderson, we were told that we would be awarded a Find RIBBON for our participation in the search. If you are interested in training to participate in ELT searches as a UDF Team member; or as a Ground Search Team Member, please contact me for training details.

We toast our hearty comrades, who have fallen from the skies, and were gently caught by God's own hand, to be with him on high. To dwell among the soaring clouds, they've known so well before. From victory roll to tail chase, at Heaven's very door. As we fly among them there, we're sure to hear their plea. To take care my friend, watch your six, and do one more roll for me. -Commander Jerry Coffee, Hanoi, 1968

A STRONOMICAL M USINGS
By 1st Lt James Kalemis It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom Dickens's words describes - among many things in life - observing during the cold winter months. The cool, crisp nights keep the jet stream below us and offer clear seeing. But temperatures fall below freezing at night, and no matter how many layers you wear, you will start feeling it. Enough about the worst of times, what about the best? Well, behold the wonders of Orion, Andromeda, Cassiopeia, and Leo. The Great Orion Nebula is the birthplace of new stars and when viewed though a large telescope (at least 18"), one can marvel at the pastel colors of the nebula. Did you put your lawn chair recliner away for the winter? Take it out and with just binoculars, view the Andromeda Galaxy that is located almost straight overhead. And after 10pm Saturn starts rising in front of Leo as if the ringed giant is pulling the lion into the heavens. And what was that special event I promised you last month? Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter emerge together during dawn of the 10th of December. All three planets are within a one degree circle - an event that will not happen again until 2053.
