DESCRIPTION OF CIRCUIT SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS

DISPLAY UNIT
Display / Driver Board, 950831 The Display / Driver Board contains the speed and mode display indicators and associated driving circuitry for the BEE III IL display unit. Refer to schematic diagram 950831. DS1 through DS9 are 7 segment LED displays used to indicate radar target, lock and patrol speeds. Each of these displays has an associated driver IC, designated U1 through U9. Mode display LEDs DS10 through DS19 are driven by U10 and U11. The information for all displays is shifted in serially via a clock (labeled CLK on connector J1) and data signal (labeled S_IN). The /LATCH signal latches in the serially shifted input data to be displayed. Circuitry associated with photocell PC1 and transistor Q1 automatically adjusts the drive level to the LEDS to compensate for varying ambient light conditions. An infrared receiver IC, IRRX1, converts command signals from the hand held wireless remote to an electrical serial data signal (labeled IR_RX). This signal is passed on to the Counting Unit where commands are acted upon. Switch S1 is the main power switch for the radar unit.

Display Interface Board, 950832 The Display Interface Board contains electronic interface and power supply circuits for the display unit. Integrated circuit U1:A,B and C buffers the display CLK_IN, SERIAL_IN and /LATCH_IN signals provided by the DB15 input connector J1. Inverter IC U2 and associated circuitry forms a power on latching circuit which puts a logic high signal on the PWR_ON pin of J1 when the radar is turned on. U2 is powered by regulator VR2 which remains on any time the radar is plugged in. VR1 provides regulated +3.3VDC to power the LED displays on the Display Board. VR1 is a switching regulator which operates at high efficiency to reduce heating of the display. VR1 receives filtered but unregulated switched power from the Counting Unit via +10VSW lines at J1 pins 1 and 2 . This board also contains the speaker for radar Doppler audio, SP1.

COUNTING UNIT
Controller Board, 950897 The Controller Board receives speed information from the Processor Board and converts it into a serial format that is in turn sent to the Display Unit for displaying the speed and mode information. The controller also sends this information to the DB-9 RS-232 communications port on the Counting Unit. Operator inputs from the wired and wireless remote control units are also processed by the controller. In addition, the controller provides support circuitry for Doppler audio, low voltage detect, radio frequency interference (RFI) detect and power supply conditioning functions. Power is applied to the radar via the main power cord which connects to J3. The radar is protected by a 2 amp fuse contained in the power cord cigar plug connector. CR6 is a transient voltage suppression diode which also provides reverse voltage protection. Additional transient voltage spike protection is provided by FL7, C23, L1, C24 and C25. Transistors Q1, Q2 and Q3 and associated circuitry switch the main power bus (+10V_SW) on. The control signal for power (PWR_ON) comes from the display via P1. Low frequency power supply ripple is reduced by the filtering action of R15, C26, C27 and emitter follower Q1. The sense antenna for the RFI detector is the power cord. Schottky diodes CR3, CR4 and CR5 and associated circuitry detect large RF signals which can potentially interfere with normal radar operation. These detected signals (RFI+ and RFI-) along with the low voltage detect signal (VOLT_SENSE) are input to the analog to digital (A/D) converter section of U4. Microcomputer chip U4 controls the flow of information between the processor (via J1), display (via P1) and the communications port (via J2). U1 converts the digital signals to and from U4 to the levels required for the RS-232 communications standard. The power on reset control signal for U4 is generated by U3. Information is passed between the Controller and Processor Boards primarily by an inter-integrated circuit (I2C) bus composed of a serial data (SDA) and clock (SCL) lines at J1. Speed information from the processor (bus master) is periodically transferred to the controller (slave) at a rate of approximately 4 times per second. Occasionally, the controller needs to transfer remote control command data or speedometer interface readings to the processor. The controller initiates a data transfer by the forcing the processor /IRQB interrupt line low. The signal CAL_CHK on J1 is a pulse of a predetermined width provided by the controller and measured by the processor to cross check the frequency of crystal Y1 with the processor board crystal oscillator. The Doppler audio signal from the processor (AUDIO_IN at J1) is amplified by U2 and presented to a speaker on the display by pins labeled AUDIO1 and AUDIO2 on P1. The beep tone generated when a command button on the remote control is pressed is generated by U4 pin 13 and is also amplified by U2.

Processor Board, 950898 The Processor Board receives Doppler audio signals from the radar antenna and calculates target and patrol vehicle speeds using a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm. The speed information is transferred to the Controller Board by the I2C bus on connector P1. Doppler audio signals from the front and rear antennae enter the circuit from connectors J1 and J2 respectively. Filters FL8 and FL9 filter high frequency noise from the dual quadrature audio channels for the front antenna. The antenna standby output signal is filtered by FL12. Filters FL10 and FL11 filter high frequency noise from the dual quadrature audio channels for the rear antenna. The antenna standby output signal is filtered by FL13. Dual Codec U4 converts the antenna Doppler signals from analog to digital format and sends the serial digital data to digital signal processor (DSP) U3. The DSP performs calculations for patrol and target speeds via the FFT algorithm. The DSP also digitally filters the target Doppler audio, divides the frequency to lower the pitch and sends it to the digital to analog converter section of codec U4. The program for U3 is stored in flash memory chip U5. U2 is another memory device which stores mode information to be recalled when the radar is powered up. Crystal oscillator Y2 is a 12 MHz digital oscillator which provides the main clock for both the DSP (U3) and the codec chip (U4). U1 is a power on reset chip for U3 and VR1 and VR2 provide regulated power supply voltages for the board.

HAND HELD REMOTE UNIT

Remote Board, 950882 The Remote Board transmits operator control commands to the radar Counting Unit. A microcomputer, U1, scans the keypad for button presses and serially transmits a command signal via transistor Q1 and associated circuitry. To save power, U1 is normally in sleep mode until a button is pressed. Power on reset for U1 is provided by U2. Transistor Q2 drives the backlight LEDs D5, D6, D7 and D8.

DESCRIPTION OF BLOCK DIAGRAMS FOR THE BEE III IL RADAR

I. ANTENNA UNIT The antenna unit receives prefiltered power and a transmit on/off control signal from the counting unit. The unregulated voltage passes through a high efficiency 260 KHz (oscillator) switching regulator and powers the 33.8GHz Gunn oscillator. The unmodulated Gunn oscillator generates the transmitter signal which passes through the turnstile duplexer and out the +24 dBi horn/lens antenna. A small portion of the transmitter power is used to provide LO drive to the quadrature balanced (I/Q) mixers. The transmitted signals bounce off of moving targets, are frequency shifted according to their velocity (speed and direction) and are received by the same antenna that transmitted them. The receive signals are directed to the I/Q mixer by the duplexer where they are mixed with the transmit signal. The output of the mixers are target signals that result from the difference in the local oscillator (transmitted frequency) and Doppler shifted (moving target) frequencies. The design of the mixer is such that both mixers will output a target signal frequency that represents the speed of the targets, and the phase difference (+90 or -90 deg.) between the target mixer signals will be dependent upon the target direction away from or toward the radar. These target signals are amplified, filtered and passed on to the counting unit.

Due to component and design considerations, under normal circumstances, the direction sensing antennae are not field serviceable. It is recommended that all antennae be returned to the MPH Industries factory for repair. If the customer desires to attempt any maintenance on the antenna he should be trained by the MPH factory. If repair of the antenna is attempted by any entity other than MPH factory trained service technicians the warranty will be void.

II. COUNTING UNIT The counting unit processes the stereo Doppler audio signals from the antenna unit and calculates patrol and target speed information which is sent to the display unit. The Doppler signals are converted to digital information by an A/D converter and are processed by a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) computer chip which executes 96 mega instructions per second. A 12 MHz digital oscillator provides the timing clock for the DSP and the A/D chip. A microcontroller computer chip communicates with the DSP and passes the speed information on to the display unit and to an external RS-232 port. The microcontroller also receives operator commands from the display unit by way of the IR receiver in the display. The microcontroller is driven by a 4 MHz digital oscillator. The counting unit also contains the main power supply and filtering circuits for the radar. The radar protection fuse (2A) is located in the cigar plug on the power cord.

III. DISPLAY UNIT The display unit converts the speed information signals from the counting unit to drive 7-segment LED visual displays. It also contains a power regulator and an IR receiver chip to receive commands from the hand held remote unit.

IV. WIRELESS HAND HELD REMOTE UNIT The operator controls the radar by pressing buttons on the keypad of the hand held control unit. An internal microcontroller running at 4 MHz encodes the operator commands into a serial data stream which modulates an IR transmitter LED. The remote unit is powered by 2 AA alkaline batteries.

No Power Ensure that the cigar plug receptacle on vehicle has power to it. Check the fuse in the cigar plug. If blown, replace with 2A fuse ONLY! For corded remotes: if fuse is blown, try new fuse and power unit up without connecting remote. If unit appears to function properly and does not blow fuse, then remote has +12VDC shorted to ground. If this is the case, recommend also checking TIP122 for short and also check controller board for burnt lanes around remote plug in. Replace as necessary. No Readout Is display cable being used? Try plugging display directly to CPU. Check +10VSW input to VR1 and +3VSW output from VR1 on display interface board. Check +5VSW to U1 thru U9 on display/driver board. Check dimming circuit for proper operation. Try replacing display/driver board. No Audio Check for speaker continuity on display interface board. Check audio driver (U2 on controller board) for proper audio signal input/output. If no signal on either, replace U2. Check pins on connectors between CPU and display for continuity. Unit not responding (cordless) Replace batteries. Check battery contacts and connections to PC board. Check with known working unit that remote really is not working. Check 4MHz crystal for operation. Check for signal output from pin 10 of U1. Unit not responding (corded) Check remote cable for shorts/broken wires. Check with known working unit that remote really is not working. Check VR1 has +12VDC on pin 1 and +3.3VDC on pin 3. Check to see if U1 has +3.3VDC on pin 15. Check for signal input at pin 11 of U1 and output at pin 13 of U1. Check 4MHz crystal for operation. Check for signal output from pin 10 of U1.

Err problems Check VR2 for +5V output on pin 1 on processor board. Check DSP to see if it is getting hot to the touch. If hot, replace. Check Y2 for operation. Check DSP to make sure all pins are soldered. If problem not found, replace board. No Front/Rear switching. Check FL4 thru FL11 on processor board for continuity. Check U4 for proper operation. Check DSP. Unit not turning off. Check to see if TIP122 is turning off or shorted. No communication from RS232 port. Check for proper operation of U1 on controller board. If not working, replace. Check U4 RX and TX data lines to U1. Check FL1 thru FL4 for continuity. If problem not found, replace board.
