OUR SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS UNDER ATTACK!

On February 9, Mike Bloomberg's Panel for Education Policy (PEP) approved the shutdown of 23 more public schools in New York City, as part of a plan to partially or entirely close a total of 62 schools by the end of the year. The PEP is entirely controlled by the Mayor (who appoints 9 out of 13 members). The community is invited to speak, but decisions have been made far in advance. School closings are sold to the public with the claim that the schools to be closed located mainly in poor or working-class Black and Latino neighborhoods are failing, based on a system of test scores and ratings with zero educational value, which unfairly places the blame on teachers. In fact, if anything is affecting the quality of education in our schools, it's huge funding cuts that drain away resources from where they are most needed. Even worse, billionaire-inthief Bloomberg now says he wants to humiliation to this disgusting attack on education workers by publicizing the names of failing teachers. Nevermind the fact that as the press has recently revealed, many teachers and schools that show marked improvement continue to be rated as failing by a skewed and biased system intended to shut them down. Lying in wait are privatizers, including certain misnamed labor unions like the SEIU, ready to set up even more of the Charter Schools that have failed New York over the past decades. And it's not just the schools. CUNY has been hit hard with budget cuts and tuition hikes. And cuts have left hundreds of healthcare workers in the City's Health and Hospitals Corporation, which serves the most

vulnerable members of our society, including thousands of working poor families, on the streets. At the Metropolitan Hospital Center in El Barrio/Spanish Harlem, for example, meal, linen, and maintenance services have all been privatized. Proposed restructuring of NY-state-managed federal Madicaid funds threaten to force even greater cuts to basic services. HERE, THERE, EVERYWHERE FIGHT BACK! The looting of the health and education of working-class and poor New Yorkers isn't just a New York thing. It's part of a worldwide assault on working people by the so-called 1% the capitalist class that's gotten worse since the world financial collapse of 2008. Budget shortfalls are real, but only because politicians at the back and call of the 1% - both Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. - refuse to touch the massive profits and privileges of the same criminals that broke the system, leaving tens of millions of working people homeless, jobless, or both. Barack Obama, on whom many people placed their very last hope in the system, has proven to be the best friend Wall Street could hope for. Everywhere around the world in Europe, in the Arab countries, in Latin America people are fighting back. New York hasn't been the exception, with the Occupy Wall Street movement that has spread all over the U.S. BUILD A SOCIALIST ALTERNATIVE! The time has come to make the leap, from resisting, to going on the offensive. For all its great potential, the Occupy movement have hardly made a dent in the day-to-day reality of capitalism. In

many places, it has also failed to engage deeply with poor and working class communities of color. Fighting back and building alternatives means organizing, and that needs direction and accountability. Organizations should be inclusive, participative and democratic, but democracy doesn't just mean everyone gets to be heard it means standing by and sticking to decisions that are taken democratically. We need to be capable of combating the combined power of Capital and the State, on the streets and on the battlefield of ideas. Above all, we need to know where we want to go. The future is unwritten, and the mistakes and achievements of the past are there to guide us, but the present is still about finding a way out of the oppressive, destructive capitalist system, towards justice, libaration, and respect for the environment. That's a road that we'll build together as we go, but its name is the same it's always been: SOCIALISM.

NUESTRAS ESCUELAS Y HOSPITALES ESTN BAJO ATAQUE! El 9 de febrero, el Panel de Polticas Educativas (PEP) de Mike Bloomberg aprob el cierre de 23 escuelas pblicas ms en la Ciudad de Nueva York, como parte de un plan para cerrar total o parcialmente 62 escuelas antes del final del ao. El PEP es controlado totalmente por el Alcalde (quien nombra a 9 de 13 miembros). A la comunidad se le invita a expresarse, las decisiones estn tomadas de ante mano. El cierre de escuelas se nos vende con la idea de que las escuelas a cerrar ubicadas principalmente en vecindarios negros y latinos estn fracasando, basndose en un sistema de exmenes y calificaciones de ningn valor educativo, y que injustamente le echa la culpa a las y los maestros. Realmente, si algo est afectando la calidad de la educacin, son los recortes de fondos, que drenan recursos de donde son ms necesitados. Como si fuera poco, el bandido billonario Bloomberg dice que quiere aadirle humillacin a este asqueroso ataque contra las y los trabajadores de la educacin, publicando los nombres de maestras y maestros fracasados. Esto, a pesar de que como ha revelado la prensa recientemente, muchos maestros y escuelas que muestran mejoras siguen recibiendo calificacin de fracaso por este sistema prejuiciado, diseado para justificar su cierre. Al acecho estn los privatizadores, incluyendo ciertos mal llamados sindicatos como la SEIU, listos para montar an ms Escuelas Charter de las que le han fracasado a Nueva York en las ltimas dcadas. Y no son solo las escuelas. CUNY ha sido fuertemente golpeada por recortes de presupuesto y alzas de matrcula. Y los recortes han dejado a cientos de trabajadores de la salud de la Corporacin de Hospitales y Salud de la

Cuidad, que atiende a los miembros ms vulnerables de nuestra sociedad, incluyendo a miles de familias pobres trabajadoras, en la calle. En el Metropolitan Hospital Center de El Barrio/Harlem Hispano, por ejemplo, los servicios de alimentos, lavado de ropa y mantenimiento todos han sido privatizados. La propuesta reestructuracin de los fondos federales de Medicaid, que maneja el estado de NY, amenazan con imponer an mayores recortes a los servicios bsicos. AQU, ALL, EN TODAS PARTES RESISTAMOS! El Saqueo de la salud y educacin de los neoyorquinos pobres y de clase trabajadora no es solo una cosa de aqu. Es parte de un asalto mundial a la gente trabajadora por parte del llamado 1% - la clase capitalista que ha empeorado desde el colapso financiero mundial del 2008. La reduccin de los presupuestos es real, pero solo porque los polticos al servicio del 1% - tanto Demcratas como Republicanos en los EE.UU. - se rehsan a tocar las masivas ganancias y privilegios de los mismos criminales que produjeron la debacle, dejando a decenas de millones de personas sin hogar, sin trabajo, o sin ambos. Barack Obama, en quien muchas personas pusieron sus ltimas esperanzas en este sistema, ha demostrado ser el mejor amigo que Wall Street pudiera desear. En todo el mundo en Europa, en los pases rabes, en Latinoamrica la gente est resistiendo. Nueva York no ha sido la excepcin, con la explosin del movimiento Occupy Wall Street, que se ha esparcido por todo el pas. CONSTRUYAMOS LA ALTERNATIVA SOCIALISTA! La hora ha llegado de dar el salto, de la resistencia a la ofensiva. A pesar de

todo su potencial y amplitud, los movimientos Occupy no han logrado hacer mella en la realidad del da a da del capitalismo. En muchos lugares, tampoco han logrado conectar de una manera profunda con nuestras comunidades pobres y trabajadoras de gente negra y latina. Resistir y construir alternativas significa organizar, y eso requiere direccin y responsabilidad. Las organizaciones deben ser inclusivas, participativas y democrticas, pero la democracia no solo significa que a todo el mundo se le escucha significa que se respetan y se hacen cumplir las decisiones que se toman democrticamente. Necesitamos ser capaces de combatir el masivo poder combinado del Capital y el Estado, en las calles y en la batalla de ideas. Ante todo, necesitamos saber hacia donde queremos ir. El futuro no est escrito, y los errores y logros del pasado ests ah para guiarnos, pero el presente an se trata de buscar como salir del opresivo y destructivo sistema capitalista , hacia la justicia, liberacin y respeto al medioambiente. Es un camino que construiremos juntos sobre la marcha, pero su nombre sigue siendo el mismo: SOCIALISMO.
