PROJECT PROPOSAL

IDENTIFICATION & EXPLORATION OF THE NEED o Establish the design as a Product, System or Environment and select the appropriate design/production setting - Domestic, Community or Industrial/Commercial. o State the motivation and purpose of the Design Project. o State how you will explore the need. (eg. Target & Survey a Market)

DESIGN BRIEF
o o o o

Explain exactly what the Design Project is. Who (Target) will use the project and what will it be used for. Can the design be used for other applications? Highlight the problem/s to be solved and state the constraints boundaries you can design within and guide the project with.

AREAS OF INVESTIGATION

o State the design areas, specifications and justify their identification. o State what needs to be investigated and how it will be investigated.

ESTABLISH THE CRITERIA TO EVALUATE SUCCESS

o State what the design project will have to be able to do to make it successful. o List and justify the FUNCTIONAL (how it works) and the AESTHETICAL (how it looks) qualities, which are required from the design to make it successful. FUNCTION
SIZE , COST, ERGONOMICS, SUSTAINABILITY, RECYCLABILITY, SAFETY, DURABILITY, ECO-FRIENDLY .

AESTHETIC
COLOUR, DECORATION, TEXTURE STYLE (modern), SHAPE

o State how you are going to determine whether the completed project has been successful (eg Expert to evaluate, Survey the Target Market)

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

o o o o

ACTION PLAN
An action plan for design planning An action plan for experimentation/construction. Should be flexible to accommodate any changes Begin Ongoing Evaluation in the form of a diary/journal that corresponds with Action Plan.

TIME PLAN

o Dates, quotes, phone calls, emails, invoices, letters, faxes in diary/journal should correspond with dates in Time Plan. o Ongoing Evaluation (diary) also explains changes to the Time Plan

FINANCE PLAN

o Can be presented as a list, table or database form. o Cutting, Material, Cost and Supplier List. o It is not just a collection of receipts collected and totalled at end of project. o Ongoing Evaluation (diary) also explains changes to the Finance Plan.

IDENTIFICATION & JUSTIFICATION OF RESOURCES

o This is an ongoing entry throughout entire Design & Production. o A resource is anything that is used to get the job done. Relevant information from Research, Materials, Tools & Techniques, Knowledge & Skills from Experts.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
RESEARCH
o Document all research done and only include relevant research/data that has been analysis. Suggest table form.

EXPERIMENTATION & TESTING OF MATERIALS, TOOLS & TECHNIQUES

o Any experimentation should be relevant and used to improve the development of the idea. Eg. Testing of materials, tools and techniques. o Document all experimentation and testing using the following headings. Aim, Method, Result/s and Conclusion/s o Record all results, analysis and write down all conclusions. ( Hint use Excel to Graph/chart results in a simple form)

EVIDENCE OF TESTING OF DESIGN SOLUTIONS. o This refers to testing of part or whole of design solution. Eg. A prototype made from cheaper material to check shape, size or to show client what the final design will look like. o Record all results, analysis and write down all conclusions.

USE OF COMMUNICATION & PRESENTATION TECHNIQUES.

Use relevant, clear, accurate, creative and efficient presentation. Sequence your communication so that it flows. Start with Concept drawings (sketches, illustrations) using different colour and texture combinations and end with the Formal drawings of the final design. o Use technology CAD 3D, Power Point presentations. Product /Engineering require- Pictorials, Assembled Orthographic and Item Drawings. System/Computer based require - System diagrams, IPO and Flow charts, Pseudo- code Environment/Architecture requires- Perspectives, Elevations and Floor Plans.

PROJECT REALISATION

EVIDENCE OF PRACTICAL SKILLS

o Must show how the selected resources have been utilised in designing and producing the project. (Suggest diary/journal) o In diary, use well labelled photos or video of the process.

EVIDENCE OF CREATIVITY

o You must document show off your design ideas, skills and innovations in this section. o Here the examiner will be looking for the clever ways you have used in solving any problems.

PROJECT EVALUATION
Note: Evaluation should occur at every stage of the Design and Production Process.

RECORD OF EVALUATION PROCEDURES

The examiner will want to see evidence of clear evaluation of processes and decisions you have made throughout the project. You can eithero Make a list of all the times (dates) you made an evaluation about materials, designs, procedures etc or o Direct the examiner to the pages that evaluate each part of the design and production. Use the heading PROGRESSIVE EVALUATION.

ANALYSIS OF FUNCTIONAL AND AESTHETIC ASPECTS OF THE DESIGN.

o Here you must analyse each functional and aesthetic point you mentioned
in the CRITERIA TO EVALUATE SUCCESS section in the PROPOSAL.

EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT WITH RESPECT TO IMPACT ON SOCIETY AND ENVIRONMENT.

o State the possible impact of your project on society. Will your project make people fitter, happier, healthier, more aware, friendlier, safer, less stressed, have to do less work, more content, freer, have more self esteem, more skilful o State the possible impact of your project on the environment. Use current green terminology, such as Eco-friendly, Recycling, Sustainability, Carbon Tax Will your project make the environment cleaner, less polluted, more self sustaining. Will your project make people more aware or conscious of preserving a cleaner greener environment? How have the resources you used and the waste you produced affect the environment and can it be reduced.

FINAL EVALUATION OF THE SUCCESS OF YOUR

PROJECT

o Give an overall evaluation of the finished project with respect to what you intended to achieve. o Obtain written and signed evaluations from experts in the area your project is involved. Make sure the experts evaluation is dated and matches evaluation date in Time & Action Plan. o IF you find areas that need future improvements make sure you document this in your evaluation and state possible ways of improving your design? o List Areas of Weakness in the design and make sure you explain how you would overcome these problems in future designs.
