If God doesnt respond, It Is okay and
other musInGs about love by sadhGuru
If you love the Creator, you hold him as the highest, you hold him above creation. he
is the Creator. seeing him, being with him would be the highest. If you have no trust in
him, then you talk in terms of existence, of no-mind and all these things. the moment
there is no trust, the whole issue becomes terribly complicated. then you have to split
hairs to do things, simply because love is missing. trust means unconditional love. It is
that kind of love where the other side need not respond. you simply love.
you must have loved like this when you were in school and college. the other side
was not responding, but you went on loving. once a young boy in college went to his
professor and said, I need your help.
the professor said, sure, I am here to help you.
the boy said, no, it is not academic; it is something else.
so the professor said, tell me. so the boy named the college beauty and said, I
am in love with her and I am 50 per cent successful. for the other 50 per cent, you have
to help.
the professor asked, What do you mean 50 per cent successful.
the boy replied, Well, I am madly in love with her, but she hasnt responded!
When a person has that kind of love that he does not expect the other side to even
respond; it is okay.
If God doesnt respond, it is okay. you have firm faith that he is there. now look at this
and see: we always love those who are not here. With most people it is so, they always
love the dead when they are not here any more.
When they were living, you couldnt look them in the face, you were not even on
talking terms, but once they are dead you love them. you always love those who are
not here, and it is the same thing with God. If he was here with you, if you had to share
your food with him, if you had to share your life with him, then you would have had
enormous problems with him; but because he is not here now, or at least not in your
experience, it is easy to love him.
love is not a joy, it is a deep wonderful pain. It is a very deep, tearing, wonderful
pain. something within you should tear, not just something, everything within you
should tear. only then you know what love is. If it feels pleasant, that is not love; it is just
convenience. maybe you felt a little affection.

H
ow does the feeling of love come
within you naturally, while the
spiritual sense does not come
by itself? Look deep enough
into this. Whatever you call love right
now, generally, tends to be between a
man and a woman because Nature has
created certain attraction between man
and woman. This attraction is crucial for
the survival of the race. If a woman did
not attract a man, if man did not need
woman physically, he would have killed
her long ago. He would have eliminated
woman completely from this planet
because physically he is more powerful;
whatever he can rule, he rules absolutely.
He would have completely destroyed
the woman but he needs her in so many
ways. This need has been created by
Nature because this is the only way to
perpetuate life. This is the only way to
extend the race.
basic longing is for
onEnEss
Even if you look at this physical urge that
we refer to as sexuality, you will see the
urge is to become one with something.
Somewhere there is a longing in you
that being yourself is not sufficient. You
want to include another person as a part
of yourself. So, even sexuality is just a
longing to become one with something
more than that which you call yourself.
So whatever you refer to as love generally
comes from this process I am talking
about the most fundamental now. So the
basic longing is just to seek oneness.
Oneness means yoga. You are seeking
to become one with something but if you
become one with a woman or a man it
is not sufficient. Initially, you may really
believe it is sufficient but once you go
through the phase you will realise it is not.
It does not get you anywhere.
looking for satisfaction?
So, that little bit of satisfaction is all you
are looking for. It is fine, but you will
still not settle with that. That little bit
of satisfaction that you may get with
food, sex, or child is not fulfilling you
completely. If you have the intelligence
to understand this from other peoples
experience of life, you will see these things
will not get you anywhere.
It is not that you do not have an
instinct for spirituality. The most basic
instinct in you is always to become one
with something or someone. This is a
spiritual instinct. It is just that you give
expression to your spiritual instinct
in a materialistic way, thats all. If you
become aware of whatever you refer to as
the most basic instincts, you will realise
that you have started on a spiritual
journey. Now, you are doing it without
awareness; thats why it remains a limited
process.
Recognising that there can be no universal transformation
without individual transformation, Sadhguru has
dedicated his life to presenting powerful methods of
self-transformation to people from all walks of life. He
developed Isha Yoga a set of scientifically structured
programs, which have touched and transformed the lives
of hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
Sadhgurus offering to the world is his efforts to help a
person attain his full inherent potential.
He will be in Melbourne on 8th October, 2011, for an
evening talk. Please contact australia@ishafoundation.org

outcome of the selfless dedication and the spirited efforts
of its volunteers. Spread around the world and belonging
to different nationalities and religions, this melting pot
of cultures serves as a model for a new paradigm of
humanity.
Longing to
become one
Your desire to become fulfilled is a spiritual desire
which You are not aware of. even sexualitY is just a
longing to become one with something more than that
which You call Yourself. so whatever You refer to as
love generallY comes from this process.
by sadhguru Jaggi VasudEV
2
Similarly, your desire to have more
money, more property, more power,
more pleasure, more love is simply your
spiritual longing but without awareness.
Your desire is right whether you desire
sex, money, pleasure, property, power,
whatever your desire is right, but you are
not giving it the right direction, thats
all. Your desire wants to become one
with something more than yourself but
you need to understand that getting one
woman or one man or one this or one
that is not fulfilling you. It seeks more,
and more, and more.
dEsirE sEEks
unboundEdnEss
So, what does your desire finally seek?
It is seeking unboundedness. It wants to
become one with everything. In life it
does not matter what you include as a part
of yourself, whether you include a man
or a woman or one dozen children, still
your life is not fulfilled. When you are
young you think, Oh, if I got married;
if I get married to this particular person,
especially that person that I prefer, my
life will be complete. If you get married
to somebody else, all your life you will
think, Oh, if I had married that person,
my life would have been fulfilled. That is
why I say, you must be allowed to marry
whoever you want because within no
time you will realise that you are still not
fulfilled. It may bring some happiness
and comfort into your life but it does not
fulfill you.
Once you realise that you think, Oh,
we dont have children, that is why we are
not fulfilled. If I bear a child, everything
will be okay. You could have one or one
dozen children nothing happens. You
are still not happy. We have produced
one billion people in this country (India).
Do you think everybody is fulfilled? We
go on bearing children without limit,
but still where is the fulfilment? Do you
see fulfilment on peoples faces? It is not
happening. Either you go through all
these experiences at the cost of a whole
lifetime or you look at all these people and
realise the truth; that it has not gotten
them anywhere. It is very obvious. Look at
a 60-year-old man who has gone through
every phase of life ambition, power,
sex, children, love and everything else.
Look at his face and see if it is a face of
fulfilment. No. In the morning when he
eats his breakfast he looks a little fulfilled;
afterwards he is the same.

W
hen you go to a movie, you
willingly suspend your beliefs
for an hour or two. Im only
asking you to suspend them
for a few minutes. This has to do with
your happiness so do pay attention.
You dont exist.
At least not in the way you think you
do.
Oh, youre a human being all right, a
physical contraption with a sophisticated
brain that guides you step by step through
your earthly journey. You had a mother
and a father and perhaps a sibling or two.
Youre married or youre not. You have
children or you dont. You eat, sleep, have
sex and recreate. One day you will stop
breathing and either be incinerated or put
into the ground. At your memorial service
a lovingly arranged photo collage will
capture the story of your life.
But was it really your life?
This sense of propriety is merely an
illusion. The you that emerges as you rub
the sleep from your eyes in the morning
is a waking fantasy. While the figure
reflected in the dresser mirror the one
sitting on the edge of a bed wearing a
sleepy expression - is real, the idea that it
is an independently functioning entity
with a you manning its control centre
is a delusion. That you is pure fiction.
You dont control your actions any more
than Homer Simpson does because neither
of you exists beyond the borders of your
imagination.
Since you no doubt fancy yourself to be
a freewheeling individual, this cant come
as good news, at least not at first. Such
a notion challenges the validity of your
most basic assumptions about life.
The idea that there was a you
controlling your actions was instilled at
an early age. You were praised for smiling
and burping, and not long after that you
were scolded for throwing your food and
pulling the dogs tail. Well what else were
you supposed to think after hearing all
that contrary feedback except that you
were choosing your actions instead of
simply acting? Its an idea that stuck, and
since we were all babies once, we all grew
up harbouring the same illusion.
As you got older, your identity as an
independent doer was corroborated by
any number of sources. The concept
of individual choice serves as the
cornerstone of civilised societies, and
why shouldnt it? Lines governing social
behaviour have to be drawn somewhere,
and individual choice is as good a concept
as any to draw them around. If you steal
someones car, you deserve a stay at the
graybar hotel.
Then theres the continuous drone of
happiness gurus telling you that you
should feel good about yourself, as if
there are actually two of you squeezed
into the same body one enlightened
and one clueless in need of relationship
counselling. That this split screen self-image
breeds unhappiness seems to be lost on even
on our most esteemed self-help experts.
So if you dont control your actions,
then who does? Why, Mother Nature, of
course.
Evolution fated everything in its path,
including you, who are but one of 5000
mammals within a larger group of 1.7
million known species. Your brain may
be more advanced than a monkeys, but
all that extra horsepower doesnt always
translate into brilliance. How bright is it
to conclude that human beings somehow
subverted the will of the universe and
wrested away control of their own
destinies? Science fiction is a flimsy
substitute for science when probing for
answers to lifes big questions.
Relatively speaking, of course, you
make choices every day. You choose your
hairstyle, your brand of toothpaste and
the toppings to adorn your pizza. In
the absolute sense, however, this is all
a bittersweet fairytale. You may think
youre choosing pepperoni over anchovies,
but its your genes and environmental
conditioning that are doing the choosing
for you. There is no you apart from
these natural building blocks. Free as you
are to will what you do, you cannot will
what you will. Like most mothers, Mother
Nature insists on retaining some level of
control over her children.
Whats all this got to do with your
happiness? Only everything.
The source of so much of your
unhappiness is your entrenched belief
that were all choosing our behaviour,
and often choosing poorly. This belief is a
stone in your shoe as you hobble through
life judging everyone in sight.
You judge smokers for choosing to
damage their lungs. You judge adulterers
for choosing to destroy their families. You
judge drug addicts for choosing to live

in abandoned buildings and eat out of
dumpsters. You judge distraught mothers
for choosing to drown their children. You
believe these people consciously chose
tragedy over happiness. Of all the choices
available to them, these miserable fates were
the ones they really had their hearts set on.
And then you point your finger in the
other direction. You judge yourself for
choosing to eat too much, exercise too
little and set your personal goals too low.
You drive yourself up a wall convinced
that were all squandering our ability to
make better choices.
Well now you can drop your distressing
theory of human behaviour and replace it
with a new one: everyones doing the best
they can with what life has given them.
Its straightforward, compact enough to
slap on your refrigerator as a reminder, and
at least as plausible as any theory youve
dreamed up so far. With that irritating
stone removed from your shoe, youll
discover a lightness in your step. Youll
stroll through life feeling grateful for what
you have been given and sympathetic
toward those who have been given less.
Freed from the bondage of judgment, you
will live in a perpetual state of forgiveness.
If all this is a bit too much for you to
swallow and it probably is, given how
long youve been clinging to the idea that
you are in control of your life dont
despair. Ive got a Plan B that will afford
you the same life-enhancing benefits.
Adopt the idea that were all doing the
best we can as a philosophy. Live as if
you mulled it over and decided it was an
idea worth acting on.
John Ptacek questions conventional
wisdom and thinks you should too.
His essays about lifes big questions
appear on his website, On Second
Thought, www.johnptacek.com. He
lives in the Midwestern US with his wife, Kitty.

Certain things catch your eye, but pursue
only those that capture your heart.
[Old Indian saying]
W
ho is healthier: the person who
eats the perfect diet but hates
their job and is constantly
critical of themselves or the
person whose diet is at best average but
loves what they do and feels contented
with their lot in life? Who is more likely to
die young: the person who exercises for two
hours a day and has a washboard stomach
but lives in a toxic relationship or
someone who is a few kilos overweight but
is happily married, laughs often and enjoys
the loving support of friends and family?
While it would be unwise to diminish
the benefits of eating well or being fit,
if we were to ask the enlightened sages
of times past, or even many modern-
day neuroscientists, the latter examples
would more likely be suggested as the
healthier in the true sense of the word.
The reason is that, while diet and exercise
are vitally important, the ancients knew
that the unseen, non-physical world
of our emotions affects our health most
profoundly. The Swnwt or Lady Doctors of
ancient Egypt, based everything they did in
the art of healing on their understanding
that health comes from a happy heart.
Even back then it was understood that,
to a large degree, our emotions create our
physical reality.
Just as radio waves are unable to be
seen, yet travel throughout space and time
creating tangible, concrete effects (like
music), the latest discoveries of mind-body
medicine show how our thoughts and
feelings do the same. Neourotransmitters, or
brain chemicals in layman-speak, have been
shown to have receptors on immune system
cells throughout our entire body. Receptors
for pain-reducing opiates exist not only in
our brain but in our stomach and intestines.
In reality, every idea, nuance of thought,
whim or feeling we have is gossiped to every
other cell in our body through the language
of chemistry, electricity and vibrational
energy in the blink of an eye. Indeed,
ancient spiritual masters have suggested that
our dominant feelings not only change the
chemical and electro-magnetic fields within
us but also around us. This may explain
phenomena like auras, the so-called subtle
emotional energy bodies and even how we
can feel uplifted, peaceful or uncomfortable
just by being around certain people.
The ancient Vedic sages knew all about the
power of our emotional state. Thats why for
thousands of years before modern science,
the timeless Ayurvedic texts have encouraged
us to eat only when settled and happy.
Eating when anxious or upset is known to
disturb the internal digestive processes, such
that even the healthiest food can literally
become poison to the body.
In Ayurveda, the experience of enjoyment
and pleasure is not only considered of
primary importance in terms of diet but
in everything from exercise to conception.
In former times, to aid conception, the
first prescription for any prospective father
and close family members was to make
the intended mother-to-be happy. While
extensive recommendations about what
foods, herbal preparations and even sexual
practices to promote conception were also
known, in the ancient texts it is said, a
happy woman can conceive at any time.
It is understood that when a woman is
happy and contented on the deepest level,
the subtle channels responsible for the
proper nourishment and transportation of
reproductive materials open like a lotus.
Everyday suggestions for nourishing the

While external circumstances can affect
our lives, and difficulties, sorrows and
times of emotional pain will always arise,
we generally have an amazing ability to
choose our reality. We can focus on things
which nourish our emotional health or
those that sap our spirit. We can choose
to do work that fulfils our heart or work
that merely pays the bills. We can choose
to focus on whats good in the world or
despair at all the injustice. We can choose
our attitude each day.

course is not in the egotistical sense, but
in the sense that the love of others is really
only a reflection of the love we have inside.
While connection to others is indeed a
powerful medicine, the ancients have
declared that loving ourselves is the only
love we have complete control over and is
what ultimately underpins our emotional
state of mind. Loving ourselves regardless of
being the right dress size, having the perfect
partner or being successful, is the emotional
equivalent of eating good quality food.
How can you be more self-loving today?

According to ancient Vedic science,
the most profound way to nourish our
emotional health is to nourish the level of
life that underlies our emotions. This is the
non-physical level of life, the level of spirit
or consciousness. Enlivening the inner field
of consciousness in order to integrate brain
activity and culture more balanced and
stable emotional functioning is achieved
through meditation practices.
Cultivate a no worries mentality
When social researchers analyse the
lives of healthy, long-living people, one
of the most consistent findings is that
they rarely worry too much about things.
Jeanne Calment, the French woman known
throughout the world as the longest recorded
living Westerner (she died at 122), said If
you cant do anything about it, dont worry
about it. So simple, so beautiful, yet so
fundamentally wise and true.

ost of us spend at least half of
lifes energy trying to stay on
top of life, so that the bad stuff
doesnt happen to us. We want to
pick the right partner, to land the right
job, pick the right avenues of effort, and
raise kids who are good and productive
citizens of the world. And when, in spite of
our best efforts, bad things happen anyway,
we either rail at the Universe, God or gods
for allowing it; question ourselves as to
what we did to attract this bad thing;
or we muddle through slowly gaining
some modicum of acceptance or at least
tolerance. Most of us do all of the above at
some point. And so it is that most of the
other half of our energy goes to learning
how to cope with what we couldnt avoid.
We say that we need to learn to accept and
let go and surrender, but these are terms with
which most of us struggle; though we do try,
dont we? These valiant efforts do offer some
relief and so we keep trying. But it seems
that there must be an easier or at least more
fulfilling way to go about the business of
accepting life on lifes terms. So, what if there
is? What if a change in perspective could get
us to acceptance and to peace faster and in a
more enduring fashion and would actually
gracefully offer surrender or letting go? Would
you do it? And what if such a change would
mean an entire shift in consciousness, a
complete revision of the way we see life, and
a total transformation of identityradically
altering the entire definition of self? Would
you still want to do it? Well lets give it a go.
What if the following were really true?
Theres a gift in everything, every event,
every circumstance, every encounter,
every limitation, trauma, difficulty,
challenge and loss. What if even the worst
case scenarios we can imagine bring us a
profound gift? What if the more difficult
the challenge, the more profound is the
gift? Well, thats all well and good, we
might say, but how can that be?
It can be if we align our thinking with
the real truth of what is going on here. You
see, weve put all of life into two separate
and distinct categories: good and bad (or
evil). The reason we have done that is
because at the beginning of our journey
here we all incorporated into the body/mind
a literal trance state, in which we came to
see ourselves as separate from the Divine.
That separation, we imagine, makes us
small, limited and bad, while the Divine
in whatever form we imagine itis large,
unlimited and good. Worse than that, it is
all our fault that we are in this predicament.
And worse yet than that, we spend our lives
trying to prove this very paradigm true. For
example, we point out to ourselves all of the
things that are bad or even downright evil,
and we say that because we can see these
things, that makes them so. And because
we see it out there in the external world, we
are just as certain that it is within us as well.
We utterly believe this paradigm of life
regardless of religion or persuasionand so
it is that we spend half of our energy trying
to avoid difficulties and most of the other
half trying to cope with what we couldnt
avoidwith very little room between the
two for really experiencing the wonder of
life.
But what if we only agreed to be put
into that duality trance state because we
were in a co-creative effort with the Divine
to bring form into full awareness of its
essential divine nature? You see, in every
creative endeavour, whether its painting
a picture or building a house, there is a
constant questioning and answering going
on. If I use this colour, what will that mean
to this portion and to that whole? If I build
the room this way, what will happen to
the balance? One of the questions that was
raised during the original creative process,
in which form was coming into being, was
this: Can form be separate from its creator?
Of course, the answer is that form and
its creator are One and there can be no
separation in Oneness. But just like when
we are painting a painting we have to
experiment with a colour, shape or form
finding the gift
in every situation
even those of us who have been practising meditation,
Yoga, and other mind/bodY techniques and who espouse
peace-generating philosophies often struggle to find
an explanation for suffering. heres a paradigm that
not onlY explains our suffering but teaches how we
might participate in a radical new version of realitY
and identitY.

before we are certain as to what we will do,
so it is that the creative effort, in which
we are all participating, requires that we
experiment with the notion of separation.
And the only true way to experiment with
such a thing is to experience it. Weve all
been experimenting with and experiencing
duality ever sincethrough our contractual
agreement to take on this duality trance
state in which we fully see ourselves as
separate from the Divine. Once we get
to the end of that experiment, we will
have fully experienced it to its ultimate
conclusionOneness. At that point, form
or substance will know itself as Divine, the
creation of planet Earth will be complete
and we will await our next adventure.
If all of that is true, then our ideas about
suffering and either avoiding or coping
with lifes difficulties are only a part of
the duality trance state in which we all
live. There is an entirely different reality
occurring on another level, which the
duality trance state does not encompass in
its limited scope. And if that is true, than
it seems that it is possible for any one of
us at any time to break out of that trance
state and see ourselves as Divine Beings,
not only One with the entire Universe, but
with Divine essence itself. What would this
then mean about lifes difficulties? What
would it mean about good and bad?
Such a shift in awareness would convince
us that there is no such thing as good or
bad, that this split-consciousness was only a
part of the duality trance state. This would
in turn mean that we cannot experience
anything that is not a profound gift from
and to the soulor the essential Divine Self.
In the real world, there is no good or bad,
there is only profound, amazing life energy
giving itself life energy. And this reality
is always co-occurring parallel to and as a
co-creative part of the duality trance state.
Heres how that works. Lets say that I
came here in this incarnation to learn that
I have the ability to love unconditionally.
First, lets clarify that the I here is not my
soul. My soul already knows that it loves
unconditionally. Rather it is the sense of
myself as form, separate from the Divine,
which must learnand in this lifetime I
came to learn that I have the capacity to
love unconditionally. Each time the part of
me, which defines itself separate from the
Divine, comes here, the soul intends for
it to learn something small or large about
its essential divine nature. This time, its
unconditional love.
But Im born into a family in which my
parents are distant, cold and abusive. Well,
we say, that makes no sense, how could
we learn unconditional love from that?
Suppose after experiencing my distant,
cold, abusive parents, I continually get
attracted to distant, cold and abusive lovers,
whom I love with all of my heart, but from
whom I must eventually separate because
the relationships are too toxic. I might look
at this as profoundly sad evidence that I
should give up on relationships. Or, if I am
looking at it from the soul perspective, I
might see that not only do I feel a deep and
profound love for my parents regardless of
their maltreatment, but I also feel the same
kind of love for my lovers. Yes, I had to
leave them. Why? Because I also love myself
unconditionally. Now, I can clearly see that
I got the gift all of these loving souls came
to give me. For, behind their blindness, was
a soul intending to give them the gift they
came here to get, and to give to everyone
else around them the gifts of soul intention.
I guess its possible that they could have
given me the same gift by showing me
unconditional love. But I doubt it. Indeed,
it was the very conditions they presented
that made me finally aware that they were
providing me an opportunity to receive my
gift of unconditional love. And now that I
have received it, I am free to go on to love
and be loved unconditionally.
Our little versions of good and mean
absolutely nothing in the face of such
enormous and profound gifts. The dualistic
version of life is reductionist at best and,
at worst, utter blindness. If we can begin
then to look for the gift behind every
event, person, place, thing, circumstance
and loss, as well as those found in all of the
wonders of livingsuch as falling in love,
having babies, experiencing the power
and presence of nature and other exciting
adventuresthen we are well on our way
to taking the blindfold off, to see clearly
who we truly are.

e can look anywhere and find a
vast range of issues that people
are going through around the
world and this seems to be a
common experience for all of humanity.
How can we begin to address any of them?
I believe that the major problem in the
world is fear. Our lives are dictated by
lacks and limitations which are based on
fears such as the fear of not having, of
not having enough, of being alone, of not
being accepted, of not being good enough,
or of not living up to our or someone elses
expectations. It can go on forever. There
are thousands and thousands of fears and
they take up a lot of energy, and by energy
I mean physical energy. A lot of it far
beyond what we realise. They also take up
a lot of emotional energy, a lot of mental
time and they dictate many of our actions.
I read that people in Japan committed
suicide because of the economic crisis. In
such a scenario, their reality changes so
much and the fear becomes so immense
fear = drowning in

that they dont know how to cope with it.
It becomes too much for them and they
cant see that perhaps there is a gateway
to an immense change, to a realisation of
something that couldnt happen without
that change.
To be fearless is an amazing sense of
freedom. It doesnt mean you are perfect
but it is a freedom whereby you can make
choices that are not dictated from the
sense of having to do something because
you are afraid of the consequences of not
doing it. I find that children are fearless.
They are more creative, more open and
more able to adapt to situations very
quickly than we are and they enjoy those
changes much more than most people.
Being fearless is being open, creative
and joyful. When you are able to be free
in that sense, I think you open your mind
to a creative knowledge and to a wisdom
that goes beyond what we can see. I notice
that people find things that they never
thought of come forth and help them in
a way that is very powerful. I have known
people who have lost their jobs and I have
worked with business people in that kind
of situation so I know that there has
been a crisis, for sure, and a painful one.
Yet, they have told me that they would
never have changed that experience
because it has shown them something
totally different. It made them reassess
their values and their priorities in a way
that allowed them to do something that
they wouldnt have done before because
things were going in a way that was
somehow too comfortable.
It pushed them to the edge, and I think
that is what letting go of fear is. It is going
to the limits of what you feel comfortable
with so that you can really look at what
is out there and be open to those things
that you discover. Most people find that
they especially have fears when they begin
to move forward, because there is usually
something amazing behind.
Once you know that you are fearful,
afraid, or panicking, the first step is to not
be so serious. When crisis hits and fear
overwhelms them, most people tend to
spend a lot of time trying to resolve the
problem using the old programs in the
mind to try to resolve it. They spend their
time thinking and talking to friends, in
a way that is useful for a little while, but
doesnt actually address the problem.
This is why, for me, the first step is to
move beyond the fear by raising the energy
inside of your body, and a very simple
way of doing that is to move the body.
Rather than sitting down, I would suggest
you take up some interesting exercise like
walking, dancing or anything that makes
your body move, because that actually
moves things inside of your mind.
Breathe. Breathe deeply into your belly.
Breathe so that you can be open enough
to see that perhaps there is more than
just that old program that is coming up,
and be open. Watch the signs around
you. Watch interesting synchronicities,
things that tell you to perhaps move into
a direction that seems totally crazy. Even
when your friends say, Are you sure you
can do this?, follow your gut intuition
and stay with it and even if it fails once or
twice or three times, keep going.
I find that when you totally trust a new
situation, people come your way. This is
what business people have told me. They
have said theyve met people who have
helped them to start something that
theyve always wanted to do. People help,
situations arise and things fall into place.
It has happened to me many, many
times to a point now that I dont even
worry about it. I just trust. I know. Things
work out. But it is not the hippie sort of,
Lets just wait and see what happens.
You have to actually take those steps. You
have to take action in the real sense and
not fear failing, which can be difficult,
especially when you might just have failed
in other peoples opinion or when people
criticise what youre doing.
Fear to me is not negative. It is actually
like anger it is a communication that has
a deeper message. Once we let go of the
superficial, there is a deeper message that
you can understand and this message is
that you are pure consciousness.

Even in moments where we suffer from
fear, in moments where we are drowning
in the space where love doesnt exist,
when we have a really hard day, there is a
part of us underneath the essence that
remembers what its like to be full of love.
That remembrance takes us further than
the space that forgets what love is. This is
why we are here on Earth, to experience
this love, this consciousness, and connect
to the essence of who we are.
Tony Samara, author of Shamans
Wisdom, From the Heart, Different
Yet the Same, and Deeper than
Words, was born in England, grew
up in Egypt and Norway, where he
discovered Zen Buddhist philosophy. This led him to Mt
Baldy Zen Center in California, where he learned the
spiritual teachings of Kyozan Joshu Sasaki. He has also
lived with shamanic communities around the globe. Now
people from all over the world visit Tony for spiritual
guidance. His main countries of activity are in Europe,
yet, with assistance of the internet, he is attracting a
global audience through frequent online interviews.
His function is as a spiritual teacher who encourages
all to lead their lives actively in a noble way in order
to realise the evolution of human consciousness. Tony

What is the source of our first suffering?
It lies in the fact that we hesitated to
speak. It was born in the moment when we
accumulated silent things within us.
Gaston Bachelard
L
ife is a struggle for most us; a
contested experience of trying
to cope with attendant pain and
distress that visits our lives and
takes lodgings. We have our good periods,
moments of pleasure, enjoyment, even
delight, but too often we are thrown back
into our suffering which makes us question
the validity of what is happening to us and
the inevitable surfacing of the big question:
Why? But if we look closer at life, fully
engage with its movements and dramas
we can start to realise that suffering is an
inevitable part of this journey. No one
escapes from its clutches; no one is exempt
from its presence. There are no get out
clauses, no fierce negotiations that we can
enter into that will help eliminate what is
making a hold in our lives. So what are we
to do? How can we proceed?
1. awarEnEss
Whether we are searching for physical,
emotional, mental or spiritual healing
the path starts firmly and squarely with
bringing awareness to our condition.
This may seem an obvious statement but
nevertheless many of us could be walking
around in pain without even being fully
conscious of it. Certainly distress can
sweep into our lives quite suddenly and
violently making us fully aware of its
presence, its dramatic eruption engaging
our attention, often disproportionately,
making our lives a misery, but there are
other times when there is an imperceptible,
slow introduction of pain, just under our
threshold of awareness, which can largely
go unrecognised and unattended. Wherever
you are placed on this continuum in
terms of attentiveness be mindful that our
visitor is here for a reason and needs our
consideration and response. If we react
automatically with a knee jerk response
we are likely to cause more damage, more
suffering. What is required is our entry
into a quiet mode where we can start to
learn how to listen intently to the voice of
our visitor so that we can take appropriate,
sympathetic action. Life dictates that we
should work with our pain, our suffering,
in order to transcend it. A full, human
existence in an imperfect world brings so
many challenges but we have to recognise
their power to shape our lives negatively,
and then, with skilful application, try
to transform them. Rilke once said that
we squander our pain meaning that we
do not listen to what the experience is
trying to tell us so we do not learn. Yet it
is only through bringing a soft awareness
to our plight, within a non-judgemental
framework, that we can start to listen
and understand our suffering; putting
us in a position of potential metastasis
transformation.
2. a PositiVE accEPtancE of
sElf-EMPowErMEnt
A vital requirement of any healing practice
insists that we open ourselves up to a
positive expectancy that says we will get
better. Not necessarily cured, restored back
to full health although this remains a
possibility but certainly an improvement,
if only on a slight incremental scale,
otherwise it could be argued, what is the
point? We must constantly affirm and
commit to the potential of getting better.
Despite how difficult our situation is we do
need to rid ourselves of fear and anxiety,
anger and despondency, which holds us
back and prevents us from taking the
first few steps forward in the knowledge
that a healing power can improve our
lives. Our world is largely determined by
our thoughts for they constantly shape
and influence in what direction we go.
By choosing optimistic, but nevertheless
realistic options, we make ourselves
available for the good to enter our lives.
Having a goal in life, a vision that can
utilise our full energies, often concentrates
our minds wonderfully, thus distracting
us, in a constructive way, from our at times
obsessive, repetitive, negative thoughts.
We may slip back at times, and this is
understandable, but if we are determined
we will get back on track in order to put
into practice the tools we need.
Mistakes are part of the journey, here to
give us corrective feedback so we mustnt
criticise ourselves if, and when, they
appear in our lives. Failure always carries
the seeds of hidden opportunities to begin
again and we must never, ever, forget this.
Recently, at a particularly low point in
my life I asked a friend if we got a second
chance in life and he replied: Yes, and a
third, and a fourth, and a fifth chance.
This, for me, meant that provided we
keep on trying to push open the door of
opportunity, a new future remained firmly
in view as an achievable goal.
3. aPPlication of tools
One of the major tools for delivering
a better existence is relaxation. Both
mentally and physically this is a major
tool for healing. Our bodies are living,
breathing organisms that contain sanctity.
Therefore we must treat them as well as we
would any cherished possession. Relaxing
showers, leisurely baths, calming massage,
full body scans, nutritional diets, gentle
exercise like tai chi or yoga, cycling or
walking, all contribute to a better, more
grounded peaceful existence. When our
body muscles are relaxed our stress and
anxiety levels decline. This is a simple
reality that we sometimes forget especially
in the heat of our everyday activities. We
are spiritual beings in physical shells
so we must be mindful of this and treat
the body, at all times, with respect and
reverence. Walt Whitman had insight on
this when he said: If anything is sacred the
human body is sacred. To render the body
strong, clear and lovely is a religious duty.
The other major dimension we must pay
attention to in our recovery program is the
mental and emotional life within. Often
our pain is deeply internalised, beyond our
recognition so we must bring forth the
mindful practices of meditation or prayer to
assist us. If we can start a small but regular
practice of sitting quietly and peacefully with
ourselves settling down to initially paying
attention to our breathing patterns then
a relaxed calmness will descend creating
a space of receptivity, and in this opening
space issues may very well start to surface,
speaking to us like they have never done
before. Often, in my own practice, a core
theme that has regularly gained my attention
has been that of forgiveness. In my life it
has been too easy for me to get irritated,
frustrated or angry at peoples behaviour
and then allow this to affect me, and what
I noticed was that, the more judgement I
brought to bear on the matter, the more I
seemed to suffer. Unwilling to go on in this
manner, I soon started a forgiveness practice
where I suspended my totally subjective
opinions, which held me back in pain, and
sought out the healing light of forgiveness
forgiveness to others and to myself.
Healing invites our active participation
in its process of reparation it asks us to
cultivate openness, patience, compassion
and forgiveness in order to move beyond
our immediate pain into a place of possible
reconciliation, and, because it involves us
in going forward, involves us in growth, do
we really have a choice to say no?
How to overcome the struggle of
life the five stages of healing
we all suffer, we are all exposed to pain that can open up old and new wounds.
no one is exempt from this process, no one can negotiate a get out clause but
there is a route map we can follow that can help us reframe this experience. for
michael its a five stage process.

4. Monitoring and
assEssMEnt
If we are to make progress on the healing
path we must be careful to monitor the
effectiveness of our treatment. Keeping
a healing journal could be a way forward.
Here we record our progress, however subtle,
in order to give us encouragement for the
journey ahead. In the normal course of events
we explore any research or ideas that can
lead us to new insights or techniques that
can improve our position and this is to be
commended. Working out personal strategies
for dealing with our plight lies at the very
heart of the healing process. We acknowledge
that ultimately we are our own physicians
and therefore must act in a responsible
manner avoiding denial, repression or
resistance which can be more harmful than
the very pain itself. We must drop below
the surface of our everyday distractions and
preoccupations to discover a much deeper
sense of experience a rich seam of knowing
which we need to give voice to and record in
a journal. Whatever recovery path we follow:
whether traditional medicine, complementary
medicine, body movement techniques,
meditation, prayers or positive affirmations,
whether individually or collectively, all will
give us information feedback.
Problems are an inevitable part of the
journey if we encounter no problems
on our travels through life then that, in
itself, is a problem. A fully lived, attentive,
meaningful life is one that confronts the
inevitable difficulties that we face and treats
them as a learning or growth process to get
us back on track. When we write about our
experiences, both positive and negative,
we go deeper, we search for the most
appropriate words and phrases to describe
them and, as a consequence, understand
them more the fine details, the subtle
nuances that could go largely undetected
unless we engage the writing and focusing
process. This pragmatic approach of
recording can also help us avoid later false
recollections, biased or prejudiced recall
by documenting accurately, at the point of
encounter, our experiences and feelings.
A healing journal gives both our pain
and path a dignity and recognition it
deserves and from this we can learn so
much. Suffering in silence isnt an option.
5. assiMilation and
rEconciliation
Eventually, after much exploration, we
are in a position to make some informed
choices on what works for us and what
doesnt. Research and experimentation is
still an ongoing practice this is vital but
at this stage we are refining our thoughts
more, giving clarity to what we have
discovered so far through systematic trial
and error. Our concerns and worries should
now, as far as possible, be translated into
action that is visible in every corner of our
lives. Thats the commitment. Thats what
we are signed up to do the wholesale
improvement of our lives. A barometer
for our well-being is not solely expressed
in the elimination or reduction of our
pain. Nourishing sleep, calmness, relaxed
awareness, alertness, renewed energy and
vigour are all indicators of our health.
Our healing journey now gives us greater
confidence and optimism, it shows greater
definition, more substance to encourage us
to seek out even more improvements.
A word of caution if we are looking for
a quick, wholesale cure for our suffering
we may be disappointed. Certainly this
could happen, and we should never
dismiss it completely as a possibility but
with a maturity of understanding we start
to recognise more the fact that healing
is not necessarily the same as curing.
Healing can, on one level, be considered
more attitudinal than physical a process
of accommodating and reconciling to the
reality of what has entered our lives and
become a part of them, an inner process of
acceptance in order to manage them better,
more effectively.
The words of the Serenity Prayer have
much relevance here: Grant me the Serenity
to accept the things I cannot change, the Courage
to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to
know the difference. simple yet profound
words to live by, to guide us on the path.
However, it does raise the question:
What can we change and what cant we
change? In this territory there are no
universal, conclusive answers; no words
that I can offer up to differentiate between
the two. We are all unique, and as such
we all need to reflect deeply on this
issue, but providing we give to it our full
concentration, something will eventually
emerge from our inner depths to support
us. This we must believe.
conclusion
The struggle with our pain can, at times,
be very problematic but if we believe and
trust in the higher power of healing then
there is always hope of improvement and
recovery.
Ive always looked upon healing, in
essence, as a way of life something that
Im constantly involved in, reading about
and studying. For me healing goes far
beyond the notion of a physical remedy,
a correction to some bodily ailment.
Its much more than this, much more
complex. In my experience it involves
many dimensions that constitute the
wholeness of us, what we are the
physical, emotional and spiritual.
When we are ill we lose confidence
in ourselves, a self-erosion that can
undermine so much. Healing is about
regaining and restoring this loss, regaining
our self-belief in order to assist recovery.
It is also about making a commitment, a
vow to stay alert, explore and observe
without judgement all that is happening
in our minds and bodies.
Abraham Maslow once said: The ability
to be in the present moment is a major
component of mental wellness. I cannot
help but fully accept this. Looking back
into the past, or projecting forward into
the future, makes us miss the opportunity
to attend to the preciousness of the
current moment with all its rich diversity
and complexity. What is of real value is
this living, cherished moment, in the here
and now not some mindscape that takes
us away from this reality.
Our body is the vehicle that carries and
supports our life so treat it well. Never
allow it to become a foreign country,
a remote, strange territory that we feel
disconnected from, a place we rarely visit
in any mindful, attentive way. We must
always acknowledge to our body that we
are listening to what its saying, that we
are accepting its invitation to open up
and share its inner, deep cell wisdom/
truth. Then we can rest in the knowledge
and conviction that we have given our
best efforts which will undoubtedly be
acknowledged in return...
Here in this body are sacred rivers, here are
the sun and moon, as well as the pilgrimage
places. I have not encountered another temple
as blissful as my own body.
