SOLUBILITY BEHAVIOR OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS

I. Objectives
To examine the solubility of different organic compounds in different solvent systems To classify the organic compounds according to solubility

II. Schematic Diagram of the Procedure

5 drops of solvent in micro test tubes

+ 1-2 drops or small pinch of test compound

test compounds in water

test solubility of watersoluble test compounds in ether

test solubility of waterinsoluble test compounds in 5% NaOH

test solubility of compounds that are soluble in 5% NaOH using 5% NaHCO3

test solubility of compounds that are insoluble in 5% NaOH using 5% HCl

liquid is insoluble if two layers are formed

record solubility as (+) soluble or (-) insoluble

compound is soluble as long as it is more soluble in the solvent than in water

for testing compounds that are insoluble in 5% HCl, note manifestations of a reaction (production of heat, change in color, formation of a precipitate, or evolution of gas)

This material is a systemic poison and constitutes a serious health hazard. The risks of using it in the laboratory must be fully assessed before work begins. Vesicant. Typical MEL 2 ppm; typical OEL 1 ppm. Acute poisoning by ingestion, inhalation or skin contact may lead to death. Phenol is readily absorbed through the skin. Highly toxic by inhalation. Corrosive causes burns. Severe irritant. Stable. Extremely flammable. Note low flash point. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents. Vapour, being much denser than air, may travel considerable distances to a source of

ignition. Hygroscopic. Harmful if inhaled, especially if breathed in over long periods. May cause drowsiness. Possible risk of harm to the unborn child. May cause lung damage if swallowed. Serious irritant.
