Saponification: Herbal soap-making

I. Objective To make soap through saponification II. Schematic Diagram of Procedure put on safety equipment cover working area with several layers of newspaper prepare lye soln by pouring 3 cups of tap water into plastic pitcher

let mixture cool to room temperature

continue stirring until water turns clear

while stirring, + 1 cup caustic soda

5 cups of oil into large mixing bowl

+lye solution while stirring in rapid, small circles

continue stirring until it begins to trace (20 to 90 mins)

pour into mold and allow to solidify (24 to 48 hours)

use wooden spoon to gently stir

+1/2 cup herbal extracts, 5-10 mL fragrance and 3-5 mL coloring to mixture

remove soap from mold and wrap with Saran wrap

allow soap to cure for five to six weeks

Hazards
Inhalation: Severe irritant. Effects from inhalation of mist vary from mild irritation to serious damage of the upper respiratory tract, depending on severity of exposure. Symptoms may include sneezing, sore throat or runny nose. Severe pneumonitis may occur. Ingestion: Corrosive! Swallowing may cause severe burns of mouth, throat, and stomach. Severe scarring of tissue and death may result. Symptoms may include bleeding, vomiting, diarrhea, fall in blood pressure. Damage may appears days after exposure. Skin Contact: Corrosive! Contact with skin can cause irritation or severe burns and scarring with greater exposures. Eye Contact: Corrosive! Causes irritation of eyes, and with greater exposures it can cause burns that may result in permanent impairment of vision, even blindness. Chronic Exposure: Prolonged contact with dilute solutions or dust has a destructive effect upon tissue.
