Friends: We can finally welcome you to our place in the world: the enchanted islands of the archipelago of Puerto Rico. We celebrate the 20th International Democratic Education Conference (20 IDEC 2012) in the magical, autonomous city of Caguas. Your presence here excites us and, especially, fills us with hope. Puerto Rico has much to offer to 20 IDEC 2012. But we know you also have much to offer us in what we hope is the eve of a major transformation as a country and you are part of that process. IDEC 2012 is not only an international conference. It is a starting point, a space where large and small projects are born that change the lives of people around the world. This is why our inspiration and theme of recent months has been that the most important day of 20 IDEC 2012 has to be April 1st. We say this because what makes IDEC truly relevant all year long is the work that we are able to pursue since the day we say farewell to the conference. That is the moment when our work begins from what has been cultivated during our time together. In order to guarantee profound footsteps, and responding to the Puerto Rican situation, this year we will have a room named Proyecto Pas (the Country Project). This will be permanently open to welcome the discussion of all the people and organizations that have ideas about Puerto Rico and, in many cases, have already begun to implement them. We want to provoke a sustained dialogue beyond March and, as a result of Proyecto Pas, arrange a concrete, inspiring statement that leads to the agreement of all these efforts for a common purpose: to build the country we need, want and can. Another important part of this IDEC will be the First Regional Gathering of the Americas and the Caribbean. On March 29th, we will meet to shape this project, through which we aim to constitute a collaborative region of North, Central and South America and the Caribbean for an alternative and democratic education that defends the human rights of children and youth. We want to create more opportunities for exchange, dialogue and dissemination on the social and cultural diversity of our hemisphere. For our youth, educators, scholars and community leaders to deepen on the educational experiences of their countries and participate critically in their potential for change. We will work vigorously along this exciting journey. Our desire is for you to take along everything you have come looking for in this gathering. And we hope that, in the process, you all get to know our country, our reality, and feel welcome from the very depths of our culture. To each and everyone who has supported to make this dream a beautiful reality, thank you. With all our heart, thank you for the solidarity you have already shown by getting here. May you enjoy the conference since the very moment you arrive and until its last second. Welcome to Puerto Rico!

Each room also has a name that refers to various aspects of Puerto Rican culture. You can see the list of rooms by color and name in the table on the left. The following list has some expressions we use to describe these names: 1. Borikn-The Tanos name for this island. 2. Mar Caribe- Our Southern ocean. 3. Tano- Indigeneous peoples from Borikn. 4. Yunque- Our Rainforest. Legend says that the good spirit of the god Yuquiy reigned from this powerful mountain range. 5. Pitirre- An autoctonous bird known for its brave character. 6. Caguax- Name of the Tano indigenous chief of the region of Caguas. 7. Coqu- The puertorricans are like the coqu, we can only live in our islands. At night you will enjoy the singing of this small frog. 8. Moriviv- A little sensitive plant that closes when touched, then opens back again. 9. Roble- A beautiful big tree with pink or yellow little flowers. It is a symbol of Caguas. 10. Amapola- It is not the national flower. But many people think it is for its beauty and presence in our culture. 11. Flamboyn- Puerto Ricos emblematic tree has little orange flowers that blossom in the summer. 12. Yagrumo- A gigantic Caribbean leaf that is brown in one side and white in the other. 13. Ceiba- A majestic tree, considered sacred by many cultures, including our Tano and Yoruba ancestors. 14. Tanam- A river in the North of the Island. The word means butterfly in the language of the Tano.

Things You Should Know

Youth Leadership
20 IDEC 2012 has been designed so that youth are fully integrated into the conference through the Youth Forum. The youth from different countries will not only be providing support organizing and moderating activities, they will propose and do! They have undertaken the responsibility for opening the plenary sessions, facilitating the workshops and the IDEC Dialogues, and will actively participate by taking positions and generating proposals throughout the conference. If you have not yet joined this collective, you can still do so during the Conference. Its your Conference!

Workshop Design

At IDEC conferences, it is common for different cultures and languages to live together, understand each other, and create new friendships and collaborations. English is the language most commonly spoken across countries attending IDEC. So, although the IDEC 2012 is being held in Puerto Rico, a spanish speaking country, we have taken both languages into consideration. One of the most fun and challenging aspects of organizing the 20 IDEC 2012 has been experimenting with new ways of carrying out workshops, conferences and dialogues. We wanted to dedicate consistent space to five thematic conversations. We will be discussing: Puerto Rico, Human Rights and Academia, Democratic Practices, Art and Movement, and Film and Media. You could dedicate your time to one theme and attend all your sessions in one space where the conversations will flow from one to the

next and leave you feeling deeply engaged with that theme. Alternatively, you could participate in everything and take a broader view of the set of themes. We also wanted to feature a few presenters and to offer you plenty of Open Spaces for presenting and participating. Weve left rooms for spontaneous and emerging conversations in every workshop block. Its your Conference! at 10:40 am, then the opening ceremony should end at 10:20 am. Presenters will do their best to ensure that the start and end of the sessions flow. These free spaces should leave enough time for you to move from one session to the other, hydrate, interact socially and take care of any other matter you deem necessary. A cultural note: In Puerto Rico, a flowing sense of time is often lovingly joked about as Boricua Time . We hope that you will follow the Law of Two Feet in knowing that you are always in the right place at the right time, or if not, that you will correct that by moving to another place where you feel comfortable. If you join a session that has already started; thats fine. Just remember that you came in late, join up at the point the session is in without delaying the group. Its your Conference!

You will be able to register and enjoy the Gardens natural beauty. n 5:00 pm Welcome and Orientation @ Jardn Botnico y Cultural. The official opening ceremony for IDEC will be on Sunday, March 25th. This is a great opportunity to register and find out about everything that will happen in the Conference and make new friends. n 6:00 pm Dinner and Fiesta Criolla @ Jardn Botnico y Cultural. Since, for some of you, this will be the first night in Borikn (the tano indigenous name for this island) we would like to offer you some of our renowned hospitality, culture and food. You are all invited to socialize, eat, dance and walk around the open spaces. 202020 and 3030 Panel

This is a shorthand description for a new kind of workshop structure in which 2 or 3 presenters share quick, powerful presentations on convergent topics, in 20 or 30 minute intervals (kind of TED Talk style). This space will be facilitated by 20 IDEC 2012 volunteers. After all three have presented, then a fully open dialogue is initiated with the audience about what folks are learning, unlearning and thinking. Its your Conference!

Visits to schools

Open Spaces

Open Spaces were created so that every participant who wants to organize workshops, conferences and dialogues can do so freely. This means that any person can suggest an Open Space covering any topic; they only need to propose it. At 20 IDEC 2012, we will set a table close to the registration area to schedule the Open Spaces. In each concurrent workshop session, we will have four or five rooms reserved for this format. This should, of course, not limit the emergence of open spaces at other times and places during the event. Its your Conference! Open Spaces function on the basis of four principles: 1. Those who arrive are the right people. 2. Whatever happens is what had to happen. 3. They start when the time is right. 4. They end when they are done.

In order to familiarize yourself with several educational models in the Puerto Rican context, you will have the opportunity of visiting four different schools: Nuestra Escuela in Caguas, Diego Vzquez Elementary School in Caguas, the Sor Isolina Ferr Center - Caimito in San Juan and Proyecto PECES in Humacao. The spaces available for these visits are limited, so make sure you register on time at the tourism table. Further information can be found in the daily program details. Its your Conference!

Exercise is very important to keep your energy up and to stimulate creativity. Every day, in the afternoon concurrent workshops session you will have several options available for your enjoyment. On Sunday we will play bamboo tennis, on Monday soccer and on Tuesday traditional games from Puerto Rico and the World. All those interested will meet up in the water fountain located in front of the Centro de Bellas Artes at 3:30 pm. Its your Conference!

The past twenty years have been lead by these presenters, including the person who called for the First International Democratic Education Conference in 1993. n 3:40 pm Simultaneous workshops and Open Spaces Session B n 5:30 pm IDEC Dialogue @ Room 4 Yunque This will be the first of three meetings, open to the public, in which the objective will be to hold conversations about IDECs future, including determining subsequent hosting countries and organizations. Participants in this dialogue will also make proposals about issues of collective interest. The Youth Forum leaders will facilitate this conversation. n 6:30 pm Dinner and Youth Cultural Show. A group of young people from Puerto Rico and other parts of the World will be sharing their talents and introduce us to different cultures. Be daring, come and participate! Students define their curriculum as one that is based on love, respect and participation. You will have the opportunity to visit one of their five centers. n 9:00 am Plenary: Democratic Education is About Human Rights. Many countries constitutions define education as a right, but there is no such thing as a right to a bad education. A high-quality education that brings about just and democratic societies is a matter of human rights and citizen participation. The presenters have been leaders in fundamental processes dealing with the defense of human rights, of children and youth. n 12:30 pm Lunch with Cultural Show (Calypso). n 2:00 pm Plenary: An Education that Practices Democracy from Communities. The notion that another education is possible has been proposed by thinkers such as Paulo Freire and Ivn Illich. In this panel, two of their disciples and an ex-secretary of education engage in a dialogue about educational projects for social change and invite us to question schooling processes. n 3:30 pm Departure to the Jardn Botnico y Cultural de Caguas. We will be spending the rest of the day at the Jardn Botnico y Cultural de Caguas, in order to get to know Caguas Citys beauties and offer diversity to the participants of 20 IDEC 2012. Simultaneous Workshops- Session F, the IDEC Dialogue, dinner and the cultural show, and other surprises such as Films under the stars will take place in , one of the most beautiful places in Puerto Rico. Please board the buses in front of the Centro de Bellas Artes at 3:30 pm. n 4:00 pm Recreational Activities Traditional Games @ Open Field, Jardn Botnico y Cultural de Caguas. Games are part of a centuries-old cultural tradition and an excellent educational strategy. In this session you will have the opportunity of learning and playing traditional games from Puerto Rico and other participating countries. n 4:00 pm Simultaneous Workshops and Open Spaces- Session F @ Jardn Botnico y Cultural de Caguas. n 6:00 pm IDEC Dialogue @ Jardn Botnico y Cultural de Caguas. This will be the final of the three open meetings, in which the objective will be to hold conversations about the IDECs future. Participants in this dialogue will also make proposals about issues of collective interest. This is were final decisions on proposals will be made during IDEC 2012. The First Regional Gathering of the Americas and the Caribbean is a conversation between the people of the Americas and the Caribbean with the purpose of promoting alternative and democratic education, in defense of the human rights of children and youth.
