Small ofce users and corporate telecommuters can now take advantage of advanced applicationssuch as managed network services, virtual private networks (VPNs), and secure Internet access. The Cisco 800 Series also enables service providers and corporations to leverage their investment and knowledge in Cisco IOS technology to achieve higher integration, economies of scale, and enhanced security.
Figure 1 The Cisco 800 Series routers give small ofces and corporate telecommuters a secure, manageable, high-speed solution for access to the Internet or a corporate LAN.

The Cisco 800 Series includes four router models and a choice of software feature sets. The Cisco 801 model provides an ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI) S/T interface for use worldwide, while the Cisco 802 adds an integrated NT1 network termination device for use in North America. The Cisco 803 and 804 models add a four-port Ethernet hub and two RJ-11 interfaces for plain old telephone service (POTS) devices such as telephones, fax machines, and modems. The Cisco 803 and 804 models also support supplementary telephone services such as call waiting, call-waiting cancel, call hold, call retrieve, three-way conferencing, and call transfer (if these services are supported by a users telephone company). For North American users, the Cisco 804 supports caller ID out the POTS port. Field upgradable Flash and DRAM memory in all Cisco 800 Series models to protect equipment investments as technologies and networking requirements change.

Security To leverage the unprecedented opportunities offered by communications and commerce over the Internet, private information must remain secure. Cisco IOS security services provide many technologies to build a custom security solution, including standard and extended access control lists (ACLs), Lock and Key (dynamic ACLs), router and route authentication, encryption, rewall, and generic routing encapsulation (GRE) tunneling. The perimeter security features control trafc entry and exit between private networks, intranets, extranets, or the Internet. The Cisco 800 Series supports Network Address Translation (NAT), which effectively creates a private network that is invisible to the outside world. NAT enables network administrators to assign a remote LAN the IP addresses normally reserved for the Internet, such as 10.0.0.1. For businesses that want to allow selected access to the network, NAT can be configured to allow only certain types of data requests such as Web browsing, e-mail, or file transfers. The Cisco 800 Series routers also support token cards, Password Authentication Protocol (PAP), Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP), and other security features that protect the corporate LAN from unauthorized access. In addition to the standard security features, the Cisco 800 Series router with the optional Cisco IOS Firewall feature set (available early 1999) provides an integrated and exible rewall for small ofces. Manageability The Cisco 800 Series supports management by a wide range of platforms and applications. Cisco CongMaker and Cisco Fast Step (Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0), and Cisco Works 2000 and CiscoView (UNIX) applications provide superior capabilities for conguration and security management, as well as performance and fault monitoring. The Cisco 800 Series supports centralized administration and management via Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Telnet, or local management through the routers console port.

X.25 over the D Channel (Point-of-Sale) The Cisco 800 Series supports International Telecommunications Union (ITU)-compliant X.25 service over the ISDN D channel. With this feature, the Cisco 800 Series cost-effectively supports transaction-oriented applications such as point-of-sale (POS) authorizations. The X.25 feature also allows users to take advantage of unused capacity on the D channel. The always on/dynamic ISDN (AO/DI) technology in Cisco IOS software allows users to minimize call charges by initiating the lower-bandwidth D channel in always-on mode when a user makes an ISDN connection. AO/DI activates the more costly B channel only when a specific transmission requires more bandwidth. In addition, the Cisco 800 Series X.25 feature includes priority queuing to improve the responsiveness of traffic over this link. Dynamic Addressing Workstations on the remote LAN can be assigned IP addresses dynamically by either the central network or the Cisco 800 Series router using the Internet-standard Dynamic Host Conguration Protocol (DHCP). The Cisco 800 Series implements both a DHCP relay agent and a DHCP server, giving network administrators a choice of mechanisms for assigning IP addresses to the routers and workstations. Easy to Set Up Each Cisco 800 Series router includes Cisco Fast Step, an easy-to-use Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0-based software tool that simplies the setup, monitoring, and troubleshooting of Cisco routers. The Cisco Fast Set setup application leads users through simple, step-by-step, wizards-based procedures to congure Cisco routers connected to an Internet service provider and/or remote corporate network. Cisco Fast Step includes the Cisco Fast Step monitor application which provides users with router LAN and WAN performance statistics, fault alarms, and troubleshooting assistance (see Figure 2).

The Cisco 800 Series router also support conguration with the Cisco CongMaker application. A Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0-based software tool, the Cisco CongMaker is designed to congure a small network of Cisco routers, switches, hubs, and other network devised from a single PC. Cisco CongMaker is designed for resellers and network administrators of small and medium-sized businesses who are procient in LAN and WAN fundamentals and basic network design. For additional setup ease, the Cisco 800 Series includes color-coded ports and cables to help users make proper connections. A Quick Reference Guide documentation provides easy-to-follow installation instructions.
Figure 2 The Cisco Fast Step installation software makes it easy for nontechnical users to install a Cisco 800 Series router.

All-in-One Solution The Cisco 803 and 804 models provide an all-in-one solution with a four-port Ethernet hub and two POTS interfaces, which enable users to meet their needs for data, telephone, and fax networking with one device. Now, small ofces and corporate telecommuters can reduce telephone line charges by combining their data, telephone, and fax communications on a single ISDN line. With one of these Cisco 800 Series models, users can simultaneously use the Internet, receive a fax, or make a phone call while reducing the expense of multiple telephone lines. Product Features

For VPNs to provide the same benets as dedicated lines, they must offer similar levels of security and quality to guarantee availability. As implemented in Cisco 800 Series routers, Cisco IOS technologies offer a complete solution to corporate telecommuters for secure remote access to VPNs, with mission-critical reliability and availability.
