NEWS

In the second of three articles in the run-up to the General Election on May 6, the Star gives Harlows general election candidates the chance to present their parties policies on certain key issues. This week: foreign affairs

o secure our interests we have to work in co-operation with other countries. Were in Afghanistan with 43 nations to stop the Taliban returning and reestablishing terrorist training camps targeting this country and others. When visiting Afghanistan, Ive seen the heroic, dedicated work of our Armed Forces. We equip them better than ever and I want them to come home as soon as it is safe to. Were training and developing the Afghan forces and begin the handover of responsibility to the Afghans later this year. We must continue to reduce nuclear weapons across the world. Britain under Labour has led the way reducing our nuclear weapons by 75 per cent. We need further reductions and must use diplomacy and sanctions to stop new nations such as Iran and North Korea going nuclear. Nuclear weapons could destroy our civilisation; we must strive for a world free of nuclear weapons. It is both morally right and practically in our interests to support the poorest on this planet. Under Labour weve doubled our aid budget after the savage cuts of the Tory years. In Europe we need greater openness and we need countries to work together to tackle crime and illegal immigration. Leaving Europe would lose us three million British jobs. We need international co-operation to tackle climate change which many Conservatives deny exists. And we need British leadership internationally. Without the co-ordinated response to the banking crisis which Gordon Brown led, we would have seen a 1930s-style crash.

BILL RAMMELL Labour

ordon Browns failure in foreign affairs has hurt our Armed Forces and our country. The Labour Government sent our brave soldiers to war with ill-defined purpose and lack of strategy. Many feel misled about the reasons for invading Iraq. Our army was put to battle without proper equipment and have arrived home lacking the welfare support they need. In Harlow, residents ask why it was necessary for Gordon Brown and Bill Rammell to close our local Territorial Army centre because of so-called cost savings when the Government managed to give MoD bureaucrats over 47m in bonuses. Just a fraction of this money would have kept our TA open. We desperately need to rebuild trust with our Armed Forces through: a strategic review to determine what our Armed Forces need so that our brave soldiers always have the proper equipment; doubling the operational bonus for frontline soldiers; establishing a new welfare service to look after veterans, and higher education scholarships for the children of Armed Forces personnel killed on active duty. On Europe we need radical change. The Conservatives will act to get our powers back from Brussels with a tough renegotiation to get our powers back on criminal justice and social and employment laws, a guaranteed referendum on any new EU Treaty and a UK Sovereignty Bill so that British Law is paramount. Restoring trust, giving pride back to Britain, ensuring we get our powers back from Brussels Conservatives will provide the change Britain needs in foreign affairs.

he world has changed dramatically in the last 20 years. Gone are the old certainties to be replaced by a new, more worrying landscape of terrorism, climate change and financial chaos. Now more than ever we have problems that we cannot solve alone which is why the Liberal Democrats are committed to looking outwards, securing Britains future with more global action. The Liberal Democrats would work through the European Union to tackle climate change. Only by grouping together can we have a realistic chance of getting the multilateral action we need to keep our planet healthy. We recognise that Europe has problems but we are committed to work hard to fix these issues rather than making Britain a country forever whining from the sidelines. We will use Europe to tackle heinous crimes like international paedophilia and terrorism in ways no single country ever could. We have shown long-term thinking in Iraq where we pointed out the failing when other parties blindly nodded their heads. Now we will bring that leadership to our Armed Forces, stopping wasteful programmes like the Trident like-for-like replacement and tranche 3B of the Eurofighter to allow us to pay for the equipment our brave troops need to fight modern conflicts. Overall the Liberal Democrats are committed to freedom, justice and prosperity, not just for the people of Britain but for the people of the world. That is why we will meet Britains obligations to pay 0.7 per cent of GNI to third world countries and we will work hard to stops banks from transferring the funds of corruption.

Getting you back into work

reat Britain must be a global player with a global destiny, free from European Union interference and in full charge of her independent destiny. To ensure this happens we must leave the European Union immediately, since Brussels has imposed its own foreign minister and council, whose influence has diminished our global power and reduced the Houses of Parliament to the status of a county council. Britains future must be re-centred on the Commonwealth and the Anglosphere, where United Kingdon Independence Party proposes a Commonwealth Free Trade Area and would reestablish its own seat on the World Trade Organisation. Together with this, UKIP would propose involvement with both European Free Trade Association/North American Free Tarde Association to foster our trade, foreign relations and influence in our drive to self-reliance and sovereignty. UKIP believes in trade not aid to tackle global poverty whilst defending fiercely our British Overseas Territories, Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands. UKIP wants to be rid of the evil Mugabe regime and calls for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi from the Burmese military dictatorship. We view with concern the dangerous military theocracy in Iran and aspects of Chinas authoritarianism. In a nutshell, UKIP wants democracy, free markets and personal liberty as the watchwords for our global mission.

ne of the British National Partys main campaign themes in this years General Election is Support our Troops Bring our Boys Home. We are totally opposed to Britains participation in the unwinnable war in Afghanistan which is none of Britains business. It is of no concern of Britain who runs Afghanistan, whether it is the Taliban or anyone else. It is not worth the life of a single British soldier. It is a matter for the Afghans and them alone. The Taliban were never a terrorist threat to Britain. Our terrorists have been home-grown Islamists who were, if anything, encouraged in their militancy by Britains involvement in Afghanistan and earlier in the illegal war in Iraq. The BNP is totally against Britains involvement in foreign wars where Britains vital interests are not at stake. The BNPs international stance is one of armed neutrality with links fostered with the old Commonwealth countries such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand. We would seek trade agreement with any country where favourable terms to Britain can be established. Britain would not act as the United States pet poodle The BNP is opposed to Britains continued membership of the European Union and would withdraw and establish a similar relationship to our European neighbours and trading partners as enjoyed by Norway and Switzerland. The BNP would vigorously defend our interests around the globe, including the Falkland Islands and Gibraltar. We would also protect our citizens from attack and molestation in any quarter of the world.
