In December 2010, it was widely speculated that Johnson & Johnson was behind a 7 billion takeover offer for Smith & Nephew, a UK-based producer of joint replacements, wound dressings and keyhole surgery devices. Smith & Nephew is said to have rejected the offer on the basis that it was too low. A month later, it was also suggested that Johnson & Johnson could also enter the bidding for Smiths Medical, which specialises in airway management, needle protection, ambulatory infusion, medication delivery, patient monitoring and temperature management products, after its parent confirmed that it had rejected a US$2.45 billion offer from an undisclosed suitor. The interest in Smith & Nephew and Smiths Medical comes amid expectations that the volume of mergers and acquisitions activity will rise in 2011 as companies begin to spend the cash they have accumulated during three years of dramatically-reduced takeover activity. In 2010, Johnson & Johnson reported group net earnings of US$13.3 billion on sales of US$61.6 billion. The group has approximately 114,000 employees worldwide. The Medical Devices & Diagnostics business generated US$24.6 billion in sales in 2010, representing 40% of group sales. Separate profiles are published on the following Johnson & Johnson franchises Cordis, DePuy, Ethicon, Ethicon Endo-Surgery, LifeScan and Vistakon.
