CHAPTER ONE - INTRODUCTION

I have chosen to write this introductive guide to the Art of Reiki as an offering to the path of the healer. My own experience with self-healing and selfawareness began roughly ten years ago, and made such an utter change to the way I perceived reality. The journey of being a student of Metaphysics, Yoga, Meditation, and Reiki has taught me how to discipline my mind and body to greater levels of consciousness, health, and happiness. I find it absolutely essential to my path to share what I have come to learn through these methods in order to add to the positive energy of the planet we share and the relationships we enjoy within our collective reality. Writing this thesis is a continuation of my learning process, which I intend to enjoy through the whole of my life, gaining deeper insight into the ways I can serve and provide abundance and happiness to others and myself. I specifically chose to research deeper into Reiki simply because, although my training was thorough in relation to the methods of Reiki being taught in the West today, I found it to be lacking in several aspects. Even after technically becoming a Reiki Master, I found myself wanting a deeper understanding of self-awareness, a richer knowledge of the science behind energy healing, and a less new agey viewpoint of the practice. I have met so many people who claim to be Reiki Masters, but have no self-control or awareness of how their actions affect themselves or others. I do not want my practice of Reiki to be lessened by association with those who either do not take the Art seriously, or who are ignorant to its deeper teachings for lack within their

2 own instruction. I have found the Art of Reiki to be slipping into a washed down commercialization of itself, and that has contributed to the lack of respect and understanding of Reiki in Western culture today. During the time I have invested in reading various other Reiki Master Manuals and texts concerning energy healing in preparation for this thesis, I have practiced the Art of Reiki myself. The experiences I have had in witnessing the positive effects on the lives of the people I have worked with has given me a validation that the Art is not only one worth understanding completely, but that it compliments every aspect of the Metaphysical Students journey. The most brilliant example of this in my life is the strength that the study has given me in healing my own body and mind, and in learning to control my thoughts and actions into a greater self respect and compassion for others. I intend that this thesis be useful to those wanting to learn the miraculous and ancient methods of hands on healing and that it serve to realign the Reiki path with its highest good.

CHAPTER TWO REVIEW OF LITERATURE

In order to more deeply understand Reiki as it is taught in the West today, after my own instruction through the Master level, I collected various teaching manuals written by Reiki Masters in the US and the UK and studied them thoroughly. Comparing the accounts of the history of the Art and the methods being taught, I developed a set of questions left unanswered and a list of complementary practices that I felt would be incredibly helpful to the student of Metaphysics to explore, should he or she become interested in energy healing. In this thesis I chose to follow more closely the teachings of Reiki offered within the manuals offered by my own teachers, Gail Thackray and Pauline Landy. However, I also have included knowledge gained from five other master teachers manuals. Within my explanations, I have made every effort to also provide information gathered through my own personal experiences within Reiki sessions I have had performed on myself, or have performed for others. In regard to the further concepts of self-healing through meditation, yoga, and self-discipline, I have included teachings from masters in these fields that I consider to be lighthouses of truth within the schools of Higher Consciousness. These teachers have affected my life in myriad positive ways, opening my eyes and mind to greater levels of being. His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer, Daniel P. Reid, and B.K.S. Iyengar are all leaders in the community of healers and great minds on our planet today. All of which

4 deserve a complete understanding of their teachings from the student of Metaphysics. Also in preparation for this thesis, although not fully represented within my bibliography, I have diligently and whenever possible listened to lectures and interviews broadcast via internet radio stations given by healers and teachers of higher consciousness. Most often I have enjoyed the information provided within the websites www.quantumhealingandsoul.com, and www.thesheilashow.com. Both have offered many incredibly insightful and informational discussions with the leading healers, authors, and teachers in the world today. This information has enriched my understanding of energy healing and other methods of healing known presently. Although I have not directly quoted from all of these sources, they have all affected the way I have chosen to write this thesis, and have all enriched my understanding of the concepts provided within. I consider it hugely important to contain within this thesis not only a complete account of the basics of Reiki healing, which would amount to a level one Reiki instruction course, but also the complementary practices that I have found to be essential to my own path of healing in order to provide as complete an offering as I possibly can.

CHAPTER THREE METHODS

When I began my instruction in energy healing, I did not have a personal interest in Reiki at all, preferring to keep my spiritual training to that of yoga and meditation. The complete Masters Level course was offered to me, totally free, as a gift by my instructor who knew that I have always been interested in Metaphysics and felt that I may benefit from the experience. This offer coincided with my decision to enroll in the University of Metaphysics to obtain ordination and a doctorate of Metaphysical Sciences. I consider gifts of this magnitude to be synchronicities, signs given by the Universe that I do not take lightly, and not at all coincidences. The experience of persisting through the Masters level Reiki instruction not only positively enriched my daily life, but has added tremendously to the medicine cabinet of practices I use to balance and heal myself. Becoming a Reiki master has allowed me to help heal others as well through providing sessions, and Metaphysical council. This ability to make more positive the lives of others is one I consider to be included within the greatest gifts I can give back to the Universe. I have attended many weekend seminars and training courses given by other masters, and have performed countless sessions on others and myself. I have also witnessed many sessions, and have provided assistance to many other masters as well. This exposure to the practices of other Masters has shown me how individual each Masters method is when put into practice. Many

6 have developed ways I was not taught within my own instruction, and assisting them to perform sessions has added to my own understanding of the Art. In order to more fully become self-realized, I have also been enjoying a seven-year study of Hatha Yoga, and a daily meditation practice. Both of these, along with Reiki, have shaped completely my understanding of my purpose upon this planet and I intend that they continue to do so.

CHAPTER FOUR FINDINGS AND RESULTS

FUNDAMENTALS OF REIKI The laying on of hands is a technique for healing the physical and energy body of the self and others that has existed for thousands of years. The process has had several forms and many names including the practice used by the Ministry of Christ that was considered healing by Divine Grace, the transmitting of prana through the hands within the Yogic Path, Therapeutic Touch and Quantum Touch within the New Age movement, and Reiki which is a form of energy healing that uses a complex system of symbols, spirit guides, and hand placements. There is some confusion about the original origins of the practice, it is often attributed to Tibetan Buddhism, but most spiritual practices have their own form of healing through the laying on of hands. The form currently being taught as Reiki was rediscovered and developed in the late 1800s by Dr. Mikao Usui, who was a practicing Japanese Buddhist. According to its teachings, Reiki has the ability to help alleviate pain and suffering, including physical and emotional, mental or spiritual. An underlying principle of Reiki is that it can do no harm and cannot be used for any harmful purpose. This is due to the intention of those involved, which is to heal, and the origin of the energy being used, which is directly from the Source and of ultimate positivity. Patanjalis Yoga Sutra 2.35 says, When the yogi is firmly established in non-violence, hostility is abandoned in his or her presence. (Iyengar, B.K.S. 1993, 2002) This is the same concept used to explain why Reiki can never have a negative affect. Reiki practitioners are taught to always intend for the energy

8 used to come from the highest good of the Cosmic Consciousness and that it work in the best possible way for all involved, always. In order to fully appreciate and utilize the methods of Reiki, an acceptance of the concept of Oneness is required. According to modern Metaphysics, the Universe is formed through the energy contained within the Consciousness of the Source Mind. All matter, all reality, is contained within the same source of energy and is the result of an infinite and perfected thought process. This Source Consciousness is known by myriad names including God, Divine Spirit, Creative Intelligence, Cosmic Consciousness, Brahma, Allah, and others. The Source Consciousness manifests through its intention all the individuations that we consider plant, animal, insect, human, element, or inanimate object. The energy within the Source is limitless, infinite, and is outside of time and space until it manifests into physical form. This is similar to the basic tenants of animism, the first understanding of the spirituality of the Universe as intuited by our ancient ancestors. Animism states that all things include within themselves the spirit and power of the Universe. Deep within the human mind is a space where this Source Consciousness resides, and it is there where the Higher Consciousness of the True Self can be reached. The Higher Consciousness of the human mind is the closest state to perfected consciousness that we can hope to achieve while in physical form. As a result of the connectivity between the Higher Consciousness and the Source of all energy, we bring the individuation and the All back together, fuse microcosm and Macrocosm, and end the duality of Self and Other.

9 Healing, Wholeness, and Illness Healing is most often thought of in terms of becoming well physically from an injury, however the root meaning of the word means to become whole. This wholeness must extend through all aspects of the person: mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical. In order to do this, effort and a desire to heal is required by the person looking to heal his or herself. Although Reiki is an extremely powerful form of energy healing, it is not a cure-all and should not be considered so. True healing comes from within, and requires effort and most of all patience. Reiki does not often confer an instant miraculous cure of any condition. Reiki works with you to restore energetic balance and repair things like blockages and tears in the energy field which create disease and unhappiness. This can take time. (Jentoft, Peggy 2001) The Metaphysical view of illness teaches that a person becomes ill when his or her mind, body and spirit become unbalanced. This is most possible, amongst other things, through the ramblings of the inner dialogue or by environment. Rebalancing and harmonizing the entire being with itself, its environment, and the Universe causes wellness. The healing process begins through the intention to be well and whole. The intention to heal works parallel to the Law of Attraction, which can be loosely described as like attracts like. About this concept Deepak Chopra says, The more (we) break down (our) conceptual boundaries, because what (we) see is only (our) conceptual boundaries, the more access (we) have to the field of pure potentiality from where (were) manifesting everything, (Chopra, Deepak and Dr. Wayne Dyer 2005) The field of

10 pure potentiality is where intention to manifest wellness is planted like a seed that grows into a reality. Reiki helps to place ones mind within a space of connectivity with Universal potentiality, where we can become one with the creative energy that spews forth all of reality. According to the Laws of Attraction, if ones inner dialogue is constantly stressful and negative, then stressful and negative experiences will continue to occur. This negative cycle is the foundation for illness. From the perspective of both Metaphysics, Quantum Physics and Physiology, thoughts directly affect and/or create the physical body. The motivation to become well and the intention to act in our own behalf are imperative to the healing process. Using methods of relaxation, such as meditation and yoga, along with Reiki one can clear the mind and calm the body in a way that improves the healing process. These methods vastly reduce the amount of stress our bodies experience, and therefore reduce chronic and stress related illnesses. Essentially, we must positively change our minds about our realities, become whole, become more balanced in our perceptions, and treat ourselves with the reverence our eternal nature deserves in order to manifest wellness. Reiki can be a path of empowerment to become completely whole, and can also be used as a tool in the path to personal and spiritual evolution.

11

Definitions and Translations The name Reiki is commonly accepted to mean Spiritually Guided Universal Life Force, however the Kanji ideograms are easily subject to deeper interpretation. Other definitions include mysterious atmosphere, miraculous

sign, or ghost energy. The word Reiki combines the words rei (meaning departed spirit, ghost; spirit, soul; miraculous, sacred, divine) and ki (gas, vapor; atmosphere; vital energy, spirit, breath of life, vitality; energy, force; natural phenomenon; spirit, mind, or consciousness). According to the form of Usui Reiki commonly taught in the West, Spiritually Guided Universal Life Force is the most easily understood translation.
Rei can mean Universal, as well as Spiritual Consciousness. The consciousness being referred to is that which flows through the connectivity of the Higher Consciousness within the human mind, rather than the consciousness of the personal mind or ego, to the Source that powers our entire reality which by definition is all knowing. Because Source Consciousness is the origin of the individuations we accept as Self and Other, as well as every other person place or thing we experience, it already knows the perfected state of everything and what needs to be done to realign with that perfect state in balanced health. Ki , also known as Prana, Qi , Holy Spirit, Vital Air, or Chi (among many other names) is the energy that exists in and animates all living things. Prana or ki is the Source Energy permeating the Universe at all levels. This is what is channeled when performing any type of energy healing method, including Reiki,

12 and its flow is controlled through the breath. Awareness prana is carried on the breath, and manipulated with breath control. One must cultivate the extension/ control/ expansion/ restraint of breath to cultivate Prana. Having strengthened the body with physical exercise and proper diet, we generate more energy. Having more energy we can explore and penetrate deeper within. Prana is a link to infinite intelligence. (Iyengar, B.K.S., et al. 2005) Cultivating a practice of selfdiscipline and wholeness is absolutely essential to being able to properly connect to and channel Source Energy, or ki.

A HISTORY OF REIKI It is believed that Dr. Usui, the man who rediscovered the Reiki system commonly known as Usui Reiki Ryoho, was a Buddhist monk in Kyoto who had an interest in the healing abilities of both Lords Buddha and Jesus Christ. His personal interest led him on a path of research into the miracles these teachers had shown. His focus was especially on how both Lords Buddha and Jesus Christ had healed the sick without depleting their own energy. Dr. Usui studied theology in the US, and Taoism in the monasteries of Japan, but he found that energy healing was no longer in the normal awareness of the spiritually minded in the way that he was seeking. His experience led him to believe that the practice was either lost, or made so esoteric as to be unavailable to the average person. He deepened his practice by studying Sanskrit and participating in the Sutras. The Sutras inspired him to attempt a Buddhist ritual consisting of a

13 prolonged period of 21 days isolated on a holy mountain in Japan, fasting and meditating, in order to attain Higher Consciousness. At the end of his ritual, Dr. Usui experienced a series of events that led to his discovery of what became known as Reiki. It is said that a beam of light descended and illuminated his third eye chakra, knocking him unconscious. While in this state, he witnessed a series of symbols within bubbles of colored light. As he became fully aware of these symbols, he received an attunement to their energy as well as direct knowledge of their meaning and usage. As he descended from the holy mountain, he experienced four more events that he considered miracles. Firstly, he hurt himself in his climb and instinctively put his hands upon the place in pain. He felt heat, and a lessening of the negative sensation. Next, when he reached the bottom of the mountain he ate a full meal after a prolonged fast and did not upset his digestion. Thirdly, he was able to heal a young girl he encountered who was in chronic pain by placing his hands near to her body. Finally, upon returning to the monastery, he recounted his experience to an elder who suffered from arthritis, and as he did so, the elders arthritis was healed. Dr. Usui taught and healed in Japan for the rest of his life, initiating 18 other Reiki Masters. The first Reiki clinic was opened in Tokyo by Dr. Usui, and one of his students named Chujiro Hayashi, who together developed the current system of hand placements through years of experimentation and experience. The clinic and healing society was called Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. In 1925 the healing society was expanded. Dr. Hayashi initiated 13 other Reiki Masters,

14 including for the first time women. One of these women, Hawayo Takata brought Reiki to the West. Up until this point, the path was still very esoteric and Masters were few and far between. Since Mrs. Takatas time, thousands of Reiki Masters have been initiated and the system has evolved into its more accessible present form.

The Hero Myth There are in fact many histories of Reiki, each slightly different due to the oral tradition that carried Dr. Usuis story, and the few public documents made available. The important thing to remember is the foundation of the Art, which is connectivity with Source Energy in order to heal the self and others. However, It is not difficult to see the similarities between Dr. Usuis story and the archetypal myth story of the hero, for example the life of Lord Buddha, which is prevalent in the foundations of many spiritual paths. Joseph Campbell has said, A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man. (Campbell, Joseph 1949) Campbell describes the heros journey as a three-part cycle. The first part, departure, is when the hero leaves everything he knows in search of something else; something greater than what he has known. It can be understood as a motivation from the subconsciousness to move towards a

15 deeper understanding of reality and spirituality. This is usually preceded by a deep sense of disconnection or dissatisfaction. The second part, initiation, is when the hero is tested to prove his character. In the case of Usui, this would be when he went to the sacred mountain to fast and meditate for 21 days. The sacred mountain reference is similar to the occasion Jesus Christ went into the sacred mountain, his mind, to seek answers. The sacred mountain is quite prevalent in hero mythology, and can be understood to represent the Higher Consciousness. After the initiatory experience, the hero has passed the threshold of the veil and achieved a rebirth into a higher state of being. The hero must actually journey inward and master the ego in order to be born again, and develop his or her connection with Source Consciousness. The third part of the cycle, the return, is when the hero brings back the knowledge acquired during the quest and shares it with his or her people. Youll also find interesting the relation between the 4 miracles experienced by Dr. Usui that led to his realization of Reiki, and the four noble truths realized by Lord Buddha after attaining enlightenment. Not so much in content, but in regard to the similarities in the heros journey myth structure, and numerological value. The number four is often represented in mythology as a number of balances that symbolizes many things, including the four directions, the four seasons, the four stages of life, and the four elements. The actual history of the origins of Reiki are irrelevant, except in regard to how it applies to the journey every soul that is inclined towards involution and

16 spiritual evolution must take. The heros journey is a metaphor for growth and passage to a new level of awareness. We are all heroes in our own journeys, and may take examples in the symbolism given within the stories of Dr. Usui, Jesus Christ, Siddhartha, or any other who traveled the same cycle before us.

HOW REIKI WORKS Reiki is a channeling of the energy released by the connection of the Higher Consciousness within the human mind to the Source Consciousness. After a person has been attuned to this energy and been instructed in how to use it, they may intend the healing of self and others as a Reiki practitioner. The method may be learned by anyone who can connect with his or her own deepest levels of consciousness, thereby connecting with Source Consciousness. Reiki works by flooding the physical and etheric body of the recipient with energy, putting pressure on blockages, and finally pushing through any and every energetic congestion that is causing imbalance. The rebalancing of energies is a powerful and necessary step in the path of healing, however it lasts only as long as the recipient maintains it. Continuing the behavior that caused the blockages initially will knock the energy out of alignment again, leaving the recipient in the same state of imbalance. This is why it is important to counsel the recipient on the affects of his or her behavior after the session. Likewise, it is very important for the Reiki Master to maintain a

17 continuous practice of alignment to his or her Higher Consciousness in order to be most effectual. Reiki balances and attunes the body to a better state of being, but because change is constant, it must be practiced as much as possible during the healing process until the recipient has the ability and understanding to maintain balance themselves.

Energy and the human body The human body is an energetic one as much as it is physical. The human energy field contains many interpenetrating subtle energy bodies, one within the other yet still separated. The first layer, usually named the etheric body, is closest in nature and proximity to the physical body and each successive subtle energy body extends further away. These are sometimes referred to as layers of the aura, yet they all inhabit the same space by vibrating at different frequencies. The energy within us is constantly in a state of change and affectation by our environments, thoughts, and circumstances. Deepak Chopra says, (We are) constantly outliving the physical death of (our) molecules. (Chopra, Deepak and Dr. Wayne Dyer 2005 ) The human body is always in the process of evolution, changing and adapting, and completely replacing every single atom that constitutes our physical selves in a matter of years. Some organs shed and reproduce their cells completely in a matter of days. Millions of skin cells a day

18 die, and are removed and replaced by fresh cells. It is exactly through this process that we make spiritual, physical, and energetic healing possible. The human body is not just a lump of inert matter with consciousness as an epiphenomenon. The human body is a river of intelligence, of information and energy, thats constantly and ever in dynamic exchange with the rest of this huge reservoir of intelligence, energy, and information. (Chopra, Deepak and Dr. Wayne Dyer 2005 ) Candace Pert, the former head of molecular biology at The National Institutes of Heath, has proven through extensive experimentation that every time a thought occurs it turns into a molecule. Our thought forms are energy fields that create matter. These thoughts are translating into molecules that originate through our consciousness and the potentiality of Cosmic Consciousness. The messenger molecules of our consciousness have receptors with precise neuropeptides that exactly match the same receptors and neuropeptides in the cells of the immune system. Any thought, emotion, or reaction that is experienced within the mind, is also experienced within the immune system and vice versa. This means that immune cells could have the same capacity for awareness as brain cells, as they use the same sort of chemical patterns that the brain uses for thought. Its the idea that structures the molecule, and the idea is an interpretation of the self, to itself. Because there is nothing other than the Self. (Chopra, Deepak and Dr. Wayne Dyer 2005 ) When the mind is thinking thoughts or feeling emotions, chemicals and hormones are released within the body that correspond to the type of emotion or

19 thought that is being experienced. Negative or stressful thoughts and emotions release negative chemicals and hormones, and vice versa. For example stress releases a hormone called Cortisol, and others called Epinephrine and Norepinephrine, which contribute to the fight or flight feeling. Love releases Oxytocin, which can make one feel elated, healthy, and happy. These chemicals and hormones flood the body and connect to the receptors of the cells in every system of the body. Thoughts also extend outside of the body, not only through the energy projected by the consciousness through the layers of subtle body, but also through the emission of pheromones by the body. Pheromones are also communicator molecules that are interpreted by the minds and bodies of other beings. These pheromones are the reason why animals can sense the fear of other animals and instinctively decide to run or attack, fight or flight. Pheromones also contribute to the reason why some places that have been the locations of horrors have such a heavy vibration, or why holy places feel so calm and elevating. We can sense, as Human animals, the physical and energetic projections of other humans by using both our minds and our bodies. This is essentially a constant subconscious process that we all participate in, and it is the reason why we can tell when a person is lying, even though superficially it seems otherwise. Our senses are picking up the vibrations of the energy being projected through the subconscious of the other, and our bodies react instinctively.

20 In regard to how a calm state of mind affects health, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama states, Now from the standpoint of health, negative emotions such as hatred are very bad. Your mental state should always remain calm. Like a wave which rises from the water and dissolves back into the water, these disturbances are very short, so they should not affect your basic mental attitude. If you remain calm, your blood pressure and so on remains more normal and as a result your health will improve. (Gyatso, Tenzin 2002) This new scientific understanding of how cells and thoughts work together has been called epigenetics, which means beyond genetics. This is the new frontier of science researching the healing power of thought and prayer, and is intrinsic to understanding how the Reiki energy affects the body during a healing session. The mental and emotional state of both the practitioner and the recipient are both working together to create an atmosphere full of positive and calming thought forms and projections. These are directly affecting every cell of the body, through the participants intention that it do so.

21 Reiki attunements It is taught that a person can only channel Reiki energy after being attuned to its force by a Reiki Master. However, modern Metaphysics allows for the possibility that Source Energy may be channeled by anyone capable of connectivity with the Source through his or her own Highest Mind. The Reiki attunements are accomplished using a complex combination of symbols and touching of the energy centers on the body. The attunements are a continuation of an ancient process of initiation, which aligns the healers physical and energetic body to a higher vibration. The attunements clear a pathway for the Reiki Energy to flow through, which once opened will remain available. Although this is thought to be true, it is important to maintain a daily meditation practice to continuously reconnect with the Higher Mind channel that the Reiki energy flows through. During an attunement, the Master initiates the student with the capacity to channel Reiki Energy through the various energy centers of the body which we refer to as the Chakras. The attunement process opens the Chakras up to channel exactly as much energy as is needed to balance and then heighten the awareness of the student. This is why many different sensations may be experienced during an initiation. With continued Reiki practice, the Chakras become more open, the flow of energy is increased, and the practitioner becomes more aware. This initiation is accepted as an affirmation of the spiritual path of the student, which cleanses all aspects of their existence and sets an intention for the future of their practice.

22 Reiki Attunements are given during the process of instruction in the techniques of practicing Reiki. This is usually done in a three or four part level system. In the level one instruction course, people are usually taught the basic techniques for hands on treatment for self and others, the fundamentals of the practice, the history, and methods of energy balancing. In Level two, the student will learn techniques for remote healing, will receive an attunement for using symbols to activate specific functions for mental and emotional healing and for increasing the connection and effect of Reiki, and will deepen their knowledge of the Metaphysical concepts of Reiki. Level three is the advanced Reiki course, and in this level the student receives deeper attunements that add a spiritual or intuitive healing energy function and the ability to attune others to use Reiki themselves. At this time the Reiki training may be complete, however some Masters choose to separate the Master teachers level from the advanced level into a fourth section. At this time further instruction may be given in arts that compliment the Reiki Masters journey. The entire process should not be completed until the student has proven to be focused, and capable in the Art of Reiki. This may take a substantial amount of time. Becoming a Master doesnt always mean that the student is infallible. However, at the Masters level, the understanding is such that a high level of control, balance, and understanding of the connection between the Cosmic Consciousness and the Higher Consciousness of the human mind exist within the practitioner. Unfortunately due to the recent commercialization of Reiki, one may for the right price, rush through the courses and obtain Masters certification in a

23 matter of months. This not recommended. Spiritual advancement is something to be taken seriously, and requires experience to understand completely. Many Reiki teachers will say that Reiki is a simple process that can be done by anyone. However, as the state of the world will attest, most do not have even a subtle understanding of Cosmic Consciousness or how to connect to it. Therefore saying that Reiki is as easy to learn as walking is misdirection, even though technically everyone does have the innate ability to do it.

Affects of Attunement Since the opening of the Chakras and removal of blockages can be a sincerely monumental event in the life of any human it is important to take note of any sensations or thoughts experienced during the balancing process, as these will give information on issues which need special attention. Keeping a journal is recommended. It is normal to experience an initial feeling of well-being, followed by a release of emotional energy after the attunements. This may last anywhere from a moment to a few weeks. Intense dream lucidity with apparent symbolism may be experienced. Write all of these dreams down. Past life recollection, physical detoxification, aches and pains, and changes to the flow of inner dialogue are all normal reactions to the Chakras releasing blockages that have been accumulating in the subconscious and the energy body. During this cleansing process, it is important to continue daily meditations, and Reiki self-healing practices. The aura and chakras will eventually balance

24 and adjust to the influx of energy. After the initial adjustment period, students typically see a focusing of belief structures, and a further balancing of the Self. It is not absolutely necessary, but highly advisable, to maintain a mild diet during any time that realizations and energetic cleansings are occurring so as not to clog the body with substances that may interfere with the movement of energy. Drink plenty of fresh water to flush out the toxins from your system. Digestion requires a huge amount of energy to accomplish, and during this time the student will have other intentions for his or her energy. The Reiki system teaches that this process lasts about 21 days, which is the same amount of time Dr. Usui used to achieve his connection to the Reiki energy on the Sacred Mountain. This may be understood to involve a three-day period of transition through each of the seven Chakra energy centers. This process is one of releasing the ego from the binding power of its limitations and making it possible to move more into a free and clear state of awakened living. (Thackray 2009) One should not become personally involved in any strange or unsettling emotions or thoughts that may arise at this time, but simply observe and take notes. These are old patterns that require release and cleansing. Any intense, unusual, or severe physical reactions are most likely not due to the Reiki attunement and should therefore be referred to a medical doctor. The experience will bring forward long suppressed energy from the subconscious mind in order to confront and release it. The process should not be judged as it is different for everyone, and is a necessary step in personal spiritual evolution. Gratefulness

25 for the clearing up of unwanted aspects of the Self is the state of mind required for a full purge of negativity and a deep balancing of energy. During the actual process of attunement, physical sensations may occur. People often report feeling heat, vibrations, waves of energy, or a tickling sensation. Some feel nothing at all. All of this is normal, and simply the bodys reaction to the stimuli of the situation occurring.

Sacred Symbols Within the Reiki System symbols are used to advance efficiency, perform distance healing, and empower and energize people and situations. These symbols can be accepted as egregores, an Occult concept that represents thought forms or collective group understandings. These symbols are thought to be autonomous entities that can affect the thoughts and energies of people. The power of the symbols now resides in the collective minds performing Reiki that share an understanding and a common purpose. Historically, the Reiki Symbols were not presented to the uninitiated, and were only revealed to practitioners upon ascension to the second degree, which was liable to take decades. Due to the recent Westernization and popularization of Reiki, the symbols are now available all over the Internet and in many books. However, they are still only taught beginning with the second degree after the practitioner has been attuned to their energy. Therefore out of respect to the Reiki lineage, I have chosen not to include images of the sacred symbols at this time.

26 There are four symbols, each representing a different Metaphysical concept, typically used within the Usui Reiki System. Three are taught within the second level, and the Master symbol within the third. Some teachers choose to include several other symbols, thought to come from the Tibetan form of Reiki, within the Master level instruction. The symbols are thought to be three dimensional, infinite in size, vibrating at high frequencies, and containing consciousness. There are variances in the way the symbols are drawn, mostly due to the lack of information and original esoteric nature of the Reiki Path. The symbols were initially memorized and never written down on anything that was not burnt after being used. They have been interpreted for over a century, and therefore have been modified in certain circumstances. This modification is said to not affect their potency at all, as it is the intention and understanding of the symbol that contains its power. Originally there were over 300 symbols, 22 being commonly used within Dr. Usuis system. The symbols were edited down to the most directly useful for the present Western system, but within the esoteric version of Reiki still being taught in Japan today all 300 are used. Each symbol has its individual name and mantra. When the symbols are being used, their related mantra is repeated in order to help focus the practitioners mind. A mantra is a word or sound that is used as an aid to concentration and energy focusing. An example of this is the OM. The first symbols mantra is Cho Ku Rei, and its name is the Power or Focus Symbol. The second symbols mantra is Sei Hei Ki, and its name is the Harmony or Mental and Emotional symbol. The third symbols mantra is Hon Sha Sa Sho Nen, and

27 its name is the Distant or Connection Symbol. The Reiki Master Symbol mantra is Dai Ko Myo, and it is the most powerful of all. These mantra are repeated silently at least three times when being used within a session. The symbols and mantra have very exact purposes and are not to be used by those who are not attuned to their intention.

Channeling and Connectivity "In order to achieve inner peace and freedom, one must understand the workings of their own mind and of consciousness in general. All behavior both constructive and destructive begins in the mind, and is dependant on our thoughts. There should be made a distinction between the mental body, where the inner dialogue resides, and the intellectual body where exists intelligence and discernment. Making self-aware choices through informed discernment and the exercise of will is intelligence. Through this intelligence, we initiate change and free ourselves from ingrained patterns of behavior and move towards connectivity with Divine Intelligence. (Iyengar, B.K.S., et al. 2005) This connectivity with Divine Intelligence that Yogi B.K.S. Iyengar is describing in his book Light on Life is exactly the same that Reiki Practitioners use in their process of channeling the Reiki energy. The Reiki Energy moves directly from Cosmic Consciousness through the connection in the healers Higher Mind and through the healers body before being channeled to the recipient via the hands or breath of the healer. Because the energy being used to heal is being channeled, the healers own energy is not being depleted. The

28 more a Reiki practitioner channels the Reiki energy, the more is received, and this process balances and fortifies the practitioner. This channeled energy can also affect the practitioners body by empowering the intuition, giving clairvoyance and deeper insight into the path required to help the most effectively. If the practitioner decides to intervene and consciously direct the healing process, his or her own energy will be used. Conscious direction interrupts the channeling process. This is why it is necessary to maintain a practice of vital energy procurement through the methods already described. If one does decide to use his or her own energy to effect a healing, it is important to note the intention being used. Many people confuse channeling with filtering. Although it is possible to take into oneself the energy of another, transmute it, and reapply it, that is not recommended, and that is not Reiki. The amount of focus and training this method would require is reserved for the highest level of practitioner. The negative affects of trying to do so without proper training would include taking into ones own energy and physical body the maladies of the person being treated, and/or placing the imbalances of the healer into the energy field of the person being treated. This method is an exercise of the personal mind, which makes it a lower form of energy manipulation subject to negative usage. It is important to let the personal ego/mind go in order to allow the Higher Mind to flow.

29 Reiki Spirit Guides and Their connection to Shamanism The Western Usui Reiki lineage often uses a visualization of spirit guides to assist in the treatment process. The Reiki Guides are thought to be a group of healers and Masters who are in the spirit realm that take part in every Reiki healing treatment. Some practitioners report a sense of other hands working in conjunction with their own, or a feeling of being watched while performing treatments. Some people feel these guides as simply an intuition, or as their own consciousness speaking to them. In order to accept these guides as a part of the Reiki Path, one must believe that we are all gifted with spirit guides or guardian angels upon our arrival to this plane of existence. These guides are ever present, and assist us all in discovering our lifes purpose, acting as teachers and advisors. The Reiki Spirit Guides are thought to be totally positive beings who wish only to help and add insight. As they are purely energetic beings, they are thought to have a direct ability to discern the energetic state of the person receiving the Reiki treatment, and therefore can relay messages to the practitioner via intuition. Although this is a prevalent part of the current Reiki system being taught in the West today, it is by no means essential to the practice. Some people may consider this idea to simply be a splintering and individuation of the ego into a personal Self and an Other, which is contrary to connectivity with Cosmic Consciousness. It is definitely possible that while visualizing spirit guides the practitioner may be calling upon archetypes of consciousness to affect the process, simply imagining that they are present when

30 in actuality only the imagination is present. If one is taught to understand that the Reiki energy flows through direct contact of the Higher Mind to Cosmic Consciousness, then there should be no need for guides or intermediaries to direct the flow. Although Reiki teaches that there can never be any negativity housed within the process, by allowing the mind to be open to the possibility of spirits guiding the consciousness during a process of channeling, the practitioner opens the door to a whole host of possible secondary affects including attracting negative spirits, possession, or the development of alter egos. Many Christian groups site this as the reason why they do not condone the use of Reiki among their believers. All of this rests upon the belief of spirits to begin with, and an understanding that despite rigorous training a Reiki practitioner may still be subject to superstitions and negative practices. The connection between spiritual healing and Spirit Guides is ancient, and comes directly through the lineages of Shamanism which is an ancient animistic visionary tradition utilizing altered states of consciousness to contact the Gods and Spirits of nature. The Spirit Guides of Shamans connect them to the other planes of existence and act as intermediaries to the spirit worlds. In the Shamans world, spirit allies have many functions they can detect the origins of illness, be dispatched to recover lost souls, be summoned in acts of aggression and show a clear path past obstacles which might arise on the shamans spirit quest. (Drury, Nevill 1989) These spirit guides usually appear in dreams, visions, or after initiations, and can be inherited or exchanged. Some of these spirits can be called upon when help is required, but are not always present. Shaman who

31 have already passed on from this life can serve as guardians and guides to those still living. Sometimes there can be a crossover of the boundaries between mediumship and shamanism when the shaman becomes possessed by his or her spirit guides. (This) is really a case of the shaman consciously tapping his inner resources -his multiple spirit helpers- to perform the act of magical healing. To this extent he is still exercising his will, rather than responding passively to the situation and channeling an unknown force form realms beyond his mind. (Drury, Nevill 1989) It is easy to see how this applies to the idea of Spirit Guides within Reiki. Although it is an accepted form within the practice, it is unadvisable in my experience to work with spirit guides. Not only because of the possibility of making a recipient who does not believe in spirits uncomfortable, but because of the unnecessary aspect of the guides as a whole. The Reiki Energy comes directly from the Source, which is the creator of all things, all individuations, and all consciousness. If this is so, then all things are One. The Spirit Guides are One with the practitioner, who is One with the recipient, who is One with Cosmic Consciousness. Spirit Guides are simply another manifestation of the same energy and as such, are redundant to the process of Reiki. The intuition that they affect can come directly from the connection between the Higher Mind and the Source. However, if the practitioner feels very compelled to work with Guides, then it is completely acceptable to do so. Whatever is most efficient for creating a healing intention.

HOW TO PERFORM A REIKI SESSION

Guidelines Before the session commences there are several important steps to follow. The following are some guidelines that are helpful: Before the recipient arrives, prepare the space being used for the Reiki session. Make sure it is clean. It is preferable to use a massage table for the client to lie on, however, a chair is reasonable as well. The client as well as the practitioner must be as comfortable as possible. Set these up in a place where the chair or table is accessible on all sides. Ensure that disruptions will not occur during the length of your preparation, and the totality of the Reiki session, by unplugging the phone and placing a sign on your door where appropriate. Smudge the room with sage, or burn incense to create a soothing smell and spiritual atmosphere. Light white candles around the room. If you choose to play relaxing music, use a playlist if possible, and set it to repeat so as not to disturb the session by requiring a disc change or cassette turn. Check that the volume is not too loud. Protect yourself from accidental uptake of the clients energy by meditating and being in a strong and focused state of mind. Use the protective Reiki symbols, to guard your own energy and charge the space being used. Relax yourself as much as possible. Meditate deeply in order to develop the connection with the Higher Mind through which the Reiki Energy will channel.

33

Reiki can be performed anywhere, however it is advisable to designate a space for Reiki sessions. This way, the practitioner develops a rapport with the energy of the space being used. Decoration and comfortability are of the utmost importance. A client will not be comfortable in a space that is too personal, such as ones living room or living space, with personal belongings strewn about. If practicing Reiki at home professionally, a separate room, with a separate entrance is advisable. The most preferable space for a Reiki practitioner is a storefront location dedicated to healing practices. Once the client arrives there are more steps to take that are extremely important to an effective Reiki session. These are listed below: Greet the client and offer them a comfortable seat. Ask them what intentions they have for the treatment, and advise them that Reiki is not to be used instead of medical treatment, but as a complimentary method which can help to alleviate illness. Advise them of time restrictions. Explain to the client what Reiki is, how it helps in the process of selfhealing, and what will be experienced during the session. Establish an understanding about what the client is comfortable with concerning actual physical touching. Have the client sign a release form stating that they understand what has been discussed prior to the session.

34 Now the session can begin. The following are the steps to be taken during the session:

Wash your hands. Have the client lie down on the table, or sit comfortably on the seat provided. If the client is cold, place a thin blanket or sheet over their body.

Begin by standing at the head and centering the mind to the task at hand. Perform any mantra or process by which connection with Source Consciousness can occur. Do this silently, so as not to affect the client.

Check the state of the Chakra by using a pendulum. Hold the pendulum over the vortices and measure the reaction. If the pendulum is spinning wide and free, then the chakra is open. If there is only a small vibration, or no movement at all, the chakra is weak. Take this into consideration.

Begin with a general hand pass over the clients head and body, down to the feet, to stir up any stagnant energy. Once this is done, begin at the head and perform the simple Reiki hand positions. If the intuition guides the hands to a certain spot, follow it. Only move the hands from position when it feels right to do so.

Once the front side of the recipient has been finished, perform another general hand pass, next ask them to gently turn over so you can proceed with their back. Follow the same guidelines for the backside.

35 After completing the hand positions for both sides, and feeling intuitively that the treatment is complete, perform another general hand pass over the body. Sweep the aura from head to toe, throwing off any negative energy. Ask the client to turn over onto their back once again. Check the state of the chakra again using a pendulum. Notice the differences in movement. The chakra open equally on the front of the body or the back. If a chakra still seems weak, consider more Reiki treatment for that area. Once a feeling of completion exists, stand at the head of the recipient and meditate for a moment on gratuity, health, and balanced energy. Intend that the recipient continue to receive as much energy as is needed for healing. Make whatever movement or visualization is required to separate your energy from the recipient. Wash your hands The recipient may have fallen asleep, as often happens during a Reiki session. At this time, allow for the recipient to come around gently. Do not abruptly wake him or her from their peaceful state. Take this time to meditate. If waking is taking longer than is desired, gently wake the client by playing chimes or a singing bowl, turning up the music slightly, or touching their shoulder and quietly saying their name until wakefulness is regained. Take some time to talk about what the recipient experienced during the treatment and answer any questions. Offer aftercare advice. Limit your advice to Metaphysical matters.

36 Settle arrangements for payment or exchange, confirm contact information Make sure to keep to a time limit, and make this known at the beginning of the session. The discussion section of the process may take very long depending on the client. A usual session lasts one hour.

37 Explanation of Hand Placements Once attuned, the Reiki practitioner uses his or her intent to direct healing. However, since Reiki Energy comes directly form Source Consciousness it already knows where to go and what to do in order to balance and heal. Hand positions are customary, but not necessary. Using the intuition, guided by the Higher Consciousness, the practitioners hands will be guided to the area needing the most attention. No conscious direction is required further than intending the energy to be directed to the place is it most needed in the physical or energetic body of the recipient. Because of the intuitive nature of energy healing, there are many different methods of placement for the technique of the Laying On of Hands. Most do not require actual physical touch, as the Divine Energy that is being channeled extends through the full diameter of the practitioners aura which is between 3 inches and three feet roughly. However, I prefer to touch wherever and whenever it is comfortable for the recipient, simply because the act of physical touch can be very calming and nurturing to most people. Releasing the body and mind from stress and tensions is the largest part of the work required in healing. Actual physical touch should only be attempted with the consent of the recipient, and a mutual understanding that under no circumstances should any touch by the healer be considered sexual in any way. As a precaution, consider avoiding physical contact when working in any area close to an erogenous zone on the body, especially when working on a member of the opposite sex.

38

39

40 Aura Cleansing and VisualizationsAside from the very localized nature of the hand placements offered above, there are several passes proposed by Dr. Masters in his Masters Level Lessons for the University of Metaphysics section on Prana Technique for Transmitting Energy Through Ones Hands which coincide perfectly with the teachings of Reiki. He divides his technique into three passes, General, Longitudinal, and Transversal. A similar pass to his General pass is used after a regular Reiki session in order to mix up and clear the energy that has accumulated during the session. The General Pass, or Reiki Aura cleansing, is done with the patient seated or lying down. The healer stands about one foot away with hands extended. Next the healer raises his or her hands about one foot over the head of the patient, charging the hands with the energy that is flowing through his or her Higher Consciousness. The healer then intends that this energy flow down and over the patient, while making the same movement with the hands. Down and over, from head to feet. Once at the feet, the healer will then shake the hands to release the energy contained there or throw it off back into the Universe, and begin again by charging mentally the hands and moving back up the length of the patients body to the head. This General Pass is used to completely charge the patients energy field with new and fresh energy. This should magnify and cleanse their aura. The closer the healer places the hands to the patient, the more energized they will feel. Closer is better for an unstimulated person. Further away is better for a nervous or irritated person. (Masters, Dr. Paul Leon 1989)

41 For a more localized energy, in the case of a patient who has a very specific problem, the Reiki hand placements are suggested. For instance, if the patient has tension in the neck it is advisable to either place the hands physically over that area, or only a couple of inches away. Remain still and silent in this position for several minutes, intending that the energy extend itself over the area needing treatment. Visualize the energy entering through the Higher Mind from Cosmic Consciousness and extending out through the fingertips. Use the breath to focus the personal mind and remove it from the process. Do this until the intuition tells you that enough energy has been transmitted to the patient, and then move to the next position. Some healers are taught to imagine a bucket next to them in which to throw off the energy. If the practitioner feels that during the passes or hand placements, he or she has picked up some negative energy in the hands, this is where it should be thrown. Through visualization, intending that the Universe reabsorb this energy and throwing it back into the void is also a useful technique. The point is not to continue to hold any energy that may have been absorbed. Constantly clean off, and channel new energy to continue the flow. Many people feel inclined to improvise movements or hand positions while practicing Reiki. This is highly advisable. As mentioned above, the intuitive nature of the Reiki Energy is such that the practitioner may be inspired to new movements during each session. Every body is different, and therefore each session is different. The creative process is inherent in the healing process, and should be respected as a form of experimentation. Circular movements with the

42 hands, using only one finger to direct energy, pushing, pullingall of it is useful. Doing what feels natural and making sure to pay attention to what Cosmic Consciousness is saying is all that is necessary. Most practitioners will develop a personal style after years of practice that is most efficient and has proven itself through usage.

43 SELF HEALING When you squeeze an orange, what comes out is orange juice, because thats whats inside. When someone squeezes you, and out of you comes anger, or frustration, or bitterness, or non-bliss it really isnt because of who did the squeezing. Its because thats whats inside, Dr. Wayne Dyer. (Chopra, Deepak and Dr. Wayne Dyer 2005) Self-healing is the cornerstone of the Reiki practice. One can not pour out of ones vessel what is not inside, and as a reiki practitioner one must be as whole and healed as possible before being able to affect the most positive change for others. Even though the Reiki energy that is being used to heal is being channeled through the healer, and is not of the healer, it is vitally important to gain knowledge of the self-healing process before attempting to share of oneself as a healer. To do otherwise is hypocritical. Hand positions for the Reiki self healing technique are virtually the same as for healing others. The hands can be placed in whichever position the intuition guides the Higher Consciousness to assume. It is important to remain comfortable enough to allow the energy to flow without restraint. Keep the hands in any position desired until a favorable feeling has been attained, then move to the next position. A General Pass over the body may also be used at any time. At any moment, during a situation of stress or anxiety, it is advisable to give a selfhealing treatment to oneself.

44

45 Process for self-healing treatment Create a safe and relaxing space where you will not be disturbed for about half an hour. Perform any action you require to clear, clean, and protect the energy of the space before proceeding. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position Open your hands palms upward and intend for the Reiki energy to flow. Visualize every inhalation as an influx of positive healing energy that transmutes any negativity within the body, and every exhalation as a release of anything needing to be so into the light of the Universe. Begin your hands on healing session working slowly from the head down to the feet. If you feel uncomfortable at any time you may use visualizations instead of the actual hands on placements. During the final position at the bottom of the feet, intend for the Reiki energy to ground and balance you. Intend for the Reiki energy to cleanse and balance the energy of your etheric body and aura. Pass the hands over the body, or visualize passing the hands over the body to do this. Return your arms to a resting position at your sides and begin a visualization of the Chakras beginning at the first Chakra. See in your minds eye each energy vortex spinning at a comfortable pace, radiating the applicable color to each Chakra. Intend that each Chakra is cleansed, balanced, and activated to the degree most suited to you. Continue from Base to Crown.

46 In order to assist visualization, a simple color guide to the Chakras is given below: o Base- Muladhara Red o Sacral Swadhisthana Orange o Solar Plexus Manipura Golden/yellow o Heart Anahata green o Throat Vishuddha Blue/ Turquoise o Third Eye Ajna Indigo o Crown Sahasrara Purple Intend that the Reiki energy continue to flow through your physical and etheric body for the good of your higher self, and show gratuity to the Universe for being present with you always.

For more information concerning self-healing and balancing of energy, I suggest reading Vital Energy- The 7 Keys to Invigorate Body, Mind, and Soul by David Simon, M.D. and Anatomy of the Spirit The 7 Stages of Power and Healing by Caroline Myss, PH.D. . Both offer deep insight into the necessary stages of balancing the mind and body, and becoming a whole and spiritually healthy person. Reid.

47 COMPLIMENTARY PRACTICES FOR SELF HEALING Self-healing should also include other practices to balance mind and body. One very powerful and complimentary practice for the Reiki practitioner is that of Yoga. Yoga is an ancient system of spiritual advancement that includes Asana, or physical poses to create energetic balance, meditation to clear the mind and still the inner dialogue, and Pranayama which is the yogic method of breath control. A strong physical body is full of energy, and is healthy and balanced. A meditative mind is one that more directly and easily connects with the Divine source of Energy. Using breath control helps to conduct the flow of energy through the body. All three are directly related to Reiki. The advantage of sustained and dedicated yogic practice, is that it erases the imprints on the subconscious which have been placed there by our habits, either good or bad, and replaces them with what we have intended for ourselves in the highest good. Excercise The positive aspects of rigorous exercise cannot be emphasized enough. Exercise strengthens and contributes to the health of the body, and keeps the body in harmony with nature. Exercise can serve as a moving meditation. Exercise provides stability, awareness, and physical intelligence which must permeate the body as well as the mind for health to be sustained. When there is no intimacy between the mind and body, there is duality, there is separation, and there is no integration. Exercise is of the utmost importance in keeping the bodys energy flowing, circulating, and accumulating. A healthy body must not be

48 stagnant, its muscles should be firm, and its balance and agility must be stable. It doesnt matter what kind of exercise is done, as it all contributes to the overall wellbeing of the body and mind. I suggest Hatha Yoga, which is the branch of Yoga that seeks to unite body with the mind through a practice of physical poses (Asana), meditation, and breath control (Pranayama). Not only does it provide for a superior control of the physical self, but it also serves as a meditation by which the mind can be focused through the movement of the body. Hatha Yoga was created by Yogi Swatmarama, a Hindu sage from15th century India who

wrote the text Hatha Yoga Pradipika, which is the most comprehensive detail of the practice to date.

Breath Control Breath is the vehicle of consciousness, and so by its slow measured observation and distribution we learn to tug our attention away from external desires, towards a judicious intelligent awareness. As breath stills the mind, our energies are free to unhook from the senses and bend inwards to pursue the inner quest with heightened dynamic awareness. (Iyengar, B.K.S., et al. 2005) One may use the yogic practice of Pranayama to experience breath control. A simple explanation of a Pranayama breathing technique is formed in four parts, inhalation, retention after inhalation, exhalation, and retention after exhalation. In inhalation, the energy of nature is absorbed into the cells of the lungs and distributed through the body. By retaining the inhalation, the energy of the breath is absorbed more thoroughly through the circulation of the blood. The

49 exhalation releases toxins and can be used as a conduit to release negative energies. By retaining the exhalation, we provide a moment of silence in the body and mind to focus the consciousness and allow the energy flowing to further release and absorb before inhaling again. The breaths should be even, long, and comfortable. Opening the ribcage, distending the belly, and filling the body. The retentions should be shorter than the length of the in or exhalations and never exceed the bodys natural inclinations. Overextending the retention of breath can cause the body to release hormones related to panic, as the body has an instinctual desire to continue to live. Without breath, life is impossible. This sudden reflex can cause the body to over-inhale, disrupting the flow of prana.

Meditation and sensory control By drawing the senses and perceptions inward we are able to experience the controlled silence and quietness of the mind. This ability to still the mind is essential, not only for meditation and the inward journey, but also so that the intuitive intelligence can function usefully and in a worthwhile manner in the external world. (Iyengar, B.K.S., et al. 2005) In particular, thoughts of desires and attachment must be stilled as much as possible. The pacification of the mind in its inner dialogue is the goal. One must learn to observe the mind in its constant workings, be objective, and keep it balanced through sustained practice. Involution is key, because one will not attain Divine knowledge without selfknowledge.

50 A deeper understanding of meditation is essential to the Reiki practice. Only with a quiet mind, can a person connect with their Highest Consciousness and through that deep place within, the Cosmic Consciousness. Its not totally about keeping thoughts positive or having a positive mind, because even a positive person has constant thoughts running around their head. Its better than having a negative mind, but the perfect balance is a quiet mind. In the quiet space between thoughts is where Cosmic Consciousness is dwelling. When the mind is silent, one can become an objective observer to both the positive and the negative, and realize that both are simply two sides of the same coin. Both must exist as polarities, and as such are equal. The point of objective observance is to be able to remove the need to judge thoughts as good or bad, but simply to allow them to exist as necessary aspects of the Universe. Take away personal connection to the thoughts, and there will be the possibility of transcending. Our internal dialogue is so noisy that it interferes with this transformational vortex, this corridor, this window that we have to the Cosmic Mind, (Chopra, Deepak and Dr. Wayne Dyer 2005) Meditation is a strong source of the mental and emotional control necessary to wellness. One must look inside for answers to where personal problems are coming from. Life is a continuous cycle of climaxes and vicissitudes, destruction and rebirth, and one can only control the reaction to circumstances that one has. One should structure their behavior in a way so that it remains as much as possible within the middle ground between positive and negative. This place is one of stability, where the body has been grounded to be

51 aware of its discomforts and comforts and learns to instinctually choose the place most correct for it. If one is resonating in a place of balance, then when obstacles and confrontations occur, one reacts with love. This form of reaction is the reaction of true Self-Awareness and personal power that is achieved through the practice of meditation.

The Seven Major Chakras Within the Reiki system, the chakras are used as guides to where energy flow is localized. Knowing where they lie within the body and what their associations are, help the practitioner to effectively understand symptoms of blockages, and clear energy flow from the body. Advanced practitioners also use the Taoist meridian charts of Qi Gong to locate energy vortices within the subtle bodies. The Seven Major Chakra are located beginning at the base between the legs at the perineum, and extend to the crown at the top of the head. Each has correspondences to its vibration, including colors and frequencies that can also be used within the healing process. Among many other things, various crystals, herbs, planets, organs, emotions, asana, mudra, and actions have been attributed to each of the seven chakras. In addition to the 7 major chakras, there exist several other minor chakras that are important within different belief systems. There have been intuited 7 head chakras including Ajna and Sahasrara. In ascending order they are: Talu/Talana/Lalana, Ajna, Manas, Soma, Brahmarandra, Sri, and Sahasrara. The

52 Hrit chakra, also known as the wish-fulfilling tree, is often included below the heart. This may be the same as the Surya chakra located at the solar plexus. Some systems include a series of 7 lower chakras descending down the legs below Muladhara that correspond to the animal instincts. These are Atala, Vitala, Sutala, Talatala, Rasatala, Mahatala, and Patala. A pendulum may be used to check the openness of a chakra, which is represented in the pendulum by spinning, vibrating, or a perpendicular or horizontal movement. One should hold the pendulum about four inches away from the location of the chakra and wait about ten seconds to achieve totality of movement. The arm of the person holding the pendulum should remain completely still so as not to affect the pendulums movement. If the chakra is closed, the pendulum will move only very slightly. An open and fully functioning chakra will spin the pendulum in roughly a six-inch diameter circle. Occasionally some energy is flowing but not in a healthy fashion, and this will send the pendulum vibrating or moving back and forth. The strength of a chakra that is close to a weak one, will also affect the movement of the pendulum, usually sending it rocking back and forth either horizontally, or perpendicular to the clients body.

55 ETHICAL IDEALS AND PRINCIPLES, AND COUNTER-ARGUMENTS TO REIKI PRACTICE

Responsibility and Precepts The demonstration of ones spiritual realization lies in none other than how one walks among and interacts with ones fellow human beings. (Iyengar, B.K.S., et al. 2005) One should not attempt to be a healer without healing oneself first. One must attend to the attitudes and behaviorisms within the self that lead to imbalance in the conscious and unconscious mind. This is of the utmost importance in supporting ongoing healing and health. Full responsibility for the practices that we have in our own lives is the first step. A Reiki practitioner is providing a Divine service, being a channel for the healing energy of the Universe to the person being healed. In order to do this properly, one must keep oneself as clear and balanced as possible so as not to interfere with the Divine energy being channeled. There is a responsibility for the healer to be healed themselves as much as possible before attempting a healing on others, because as a practitioner, we are presenting ourselves as examples to our patients. This is achieved through external ethical disciplines that are used to control actions in the external world towards others and to the self, and internal ethical observances that are a self-purification of the inner world and sense of perception. As a simple guide to the way in which a Reiki practitioner should behave, Dr. Usui provided 5 simple precepts to follow. These are listed below:

56

Don't get angry Don't worry Be grateful Work hard

Okoru na Shinpai su na Kansha shite Gyo wo hage me

Be kind to others Hito ni shinsetsu ni

You may notice that these are very similar in content to the Three Precepts of Buddhism, which are summarized within the Bodhisattva ideal as described by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, The first is the precept of refraining from negative actions; the second is the precept of deliberately engaging in virtuous actions; and the third is the precept of helping others. (Gyatso, Tenzin 2002) One can easily see how the two
intertwine. Because healing is a process of the mind and body as much as it is one of Universal Energy, it is important that the person being healed understand what is being done, believes in the possibility, and gives permission for the act to be made. The recipients permission is of utmost importance in the process, not only for it to work in his or her own Higher Consciousness, but legally. As Reiki is a method of alternative healing, there are laws and regulations governing its usage.

57 Rules to follow when performing a Reiki session Do not work with a patient whom you feel is dangerous or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Do not drink or use any drugs yourself before performing a session Do not use Reiki on any broken bones before they have been set, or in other acute situations of medical emergency. Reiki should never be used instead of allopathic medical treatments, but as a complement. Do not attempt to diagnose any physical or mental conditions, or advise the client to disregard their doctors orders. However, you may suggest that with continued Reiki treatments the patient should have their doctor check their medication needs, as they may diminish over time. Do not physically touch a patient anywhere that looks as if it may be unclean or diseased. Be aware of hygiene at all times. If you feel a patient has confused any hand placements as a sexual advance, stop immediately and reassert that this is not the case. If working on a member of the opposite sex, it may be advisable to have another person present so as to discourage any confusion of this type. Keep records of the Reiki session, maintain client contact information, and use a release contract for each session performed. During the counseling aspect of Reiki, do not ever extend your area of focus outside Metaphysical concerns.

58 Although within the path of Reiki words like Divine Mind, Universal, and God Consciousness are often used, it is not considered a religious path and may be used in conjunction with any faith. This is why the term Source Consciousness, instead of God Consciousness, is preferable as some people may become uncomfortable with any words used that may have a religious association.

Counter-Reiki Sentiments In 2009, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Doctrine released a statement condemning the use of Reiki by Catholics as a practice of superstition. This is due mainly to the fact that the Church only recognizes two forms of healing. That as performed by Divine Grace in the invocation of the Lord Jesus Christ, and healing by natural sources. The healing powers of invocation are not seen by the church as being at the disposal of humans by intention alone. Within the Catholic Churchs Guidelines For Evaluating Reiki as an Alternative Therapy it states, It is not our decision whether or not God will heal someone by supernatural means. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church points out, the Holy Spirit sometimes gives to certain human beings "a special charism of healing so as to make manifest the power of the grace of the risen Lord. "This power of healing is not at human disposal, however, for "even the most intense prayers do not always obtain the healing of all illnesses." (Lori , Rev. William E.) The church also condemns Reiki as an

59 insufficient healing practice, and potentially damaging due to its occasional use of Spirit Guides within the channeling aspect of the process. The Churchs condemnations of the practice of Reiki do not take into consideration several points. Firstly, Reiki practitioners are always taught to strongly advise their clients that Reiki is not to be used instead of medical treatment, but only as a compliment to treatments given by medical doctors. Reiki does not claim to totally and miraculously heal, as the Divine Grace of the Invocation of the Lord Jesus Christ does, but only to assist in the process of selfhealing which requires much effort. Secondly, the energy that is being connected through the Higher Consciousness of the Reiki Practitioner and channeled as Source Energy is exactly the same as was used by Jesus Christ in his healing ministry, and as per His Word, is within us all. Also by His Word, we are all capable of the same miracles that Jesus made example of, and greater if we have the right kind of belief or faith in our ability to do so. Within the Gospels of the New Testament are several teachings spoken by Jesus Christ that make references to the process through which healing is accomplished in the act of faith of the person being healed. For example, in the Gospel of Mark, when the woman experiencing her menstrual cycle for 12 years sought out the Lord and touched the fabric of the cloak He was wearing, her flow immediately stopped and she was healed. Jesus was not aware of her until he felt his energy draining, and asked the crowd who had touched him. When she responded with the truth Jesus said to her, "Daughter, your Faith has healed you.

60 Go in peace and be freed from your suffering. (New International Version - Mark 5:25-5:34) This interpretation of the teachings of Jesus Christ should not be counterproductive to the practice of the Catholic Faith, however it is still advisable to refrain from making any religious references when practicing Reiki and keep to making only Metaphysical references. The lack of scientific proof of the positive affects of Reiki have less to do with the inefficiency of Reiki Treatments, and more to do with insufficient testing. There is ample testimony given by Reiki practitioners who are also practicing nurses as to the positive affects of Reiki if given as a post-surgical treatment. Hospital patients have attested to the helpful and relaxing atmosphere of a Reiki Session. Although there has been little testing done on the affects of Reiki, there have been myriad studies done on the effects of stress and negative thought processes on the body, both of which release toxic hormones into the body chemistry causing chronic illnesses. Medical professionals will all advise that activities which de-stress, relax, and balance the mind are incredibly helpful to the immune system and therefore the bodys ability to heal.

CHAPTER FIVE DISCUSSION

In my exploration and research of the benefits of Reiki, I have come to understand that a vast majority of chronic illnesses could be avoided or cured through the practice of self-healing. With Reiki as a large compliment to a holistic journey of self-realization and spiritual oneness, one may focus the awareness and re-establish a healthy connection between the mind and the body. I feel that the dislocation by society of the mind, body, and spirit connection has founded the behavior that causes a whole host of illnesses within our species. Among many other things, obesity, anxiety, heart disease, and emotional imbalance, all can be positively affected by a regimen of meditation, exercise, breathing exercises, and stress relieving practices such as Reiki. Once one begins the path of self-realization, it becomes more and more difficult to engage in the negative behavior patterns that cause disease. Drug addictions, uncontrolled inner dialogue, negativity, and poor diet, all become distant memories of a time when the self was not aware of itself and not able to control itself as a consequence. The path of Reiki, when combined with complimentary practices of healing, is a completely holistic approach to wellness not only for those practicing it, but for the people that they can serve as an example to and a healer for. I firmly believe that if our society had a healthier and firmer grasp on how to keep physically and mentally fit, and how to combat stress, we would see a large amount of our problems disappear. If we could all embark upon a path that clears the physical and energetic body of imbalances and illnesses, we would

62 see much more energy available to put to good use within our communities. Imagine if more people were consciously meditating upon the intention to heal themselves and others, and were helping each other to do so. We would not only be developing stronger bonds with those around us, but we would be making ourselves stronger through the process. The Student of Metaphysics would be well served by a deeper research into and practice of Reiki, which can advance their own processes of connectivity with the Source Consciousness and provide yet another set of skills that can be used to help others.

CHAPTER SIX - SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

In summary, I have provided here an introduction to the Art of Reiki healing. This thesis may serve as a complete offering equal to what one would receive in instruction as a first level Reiki initiate. Additionally, I have provided personal insight into matters within the Reiki community that I feel needed to be addressed, including complimentary practices to the Reiki Path. I feel that it is absolutely essential to consider that once one becomes a Reiki Master, it is still necessary to continue with constant diligence and attention to behavior and thought patterns. In my experience, there are many who prefer to pay for a title rather than work for it, and this has lessened the good reputation of a noble practice. I have also provided insight into the history of the Art of Reiki healing, and counter sentiments within the Christian community to Reiki. In conclusion, I hope I have presented here a clear and useful guide to the Art of Reiki healing as an offering not only to others who may be interested in learning about it, but also to my own learning practice. As the research into it, and the absorption of much material concerning self-healing in preparation for this thesis has infinitely added to my own practice and understanding of the process. I intend that I have honored my teachers, and opened hearts and minds to the possibilities of energy healing. As one who deeply wishes for peace and togetherness within humanity, I now understand that oneness must start from within. And once it has happened there, may vibrate outward like the rings left in water after an entrance, raising the frequency of all it encounters.
