Portmore HEART Academy Building Construction Services Department Course Outline

Programme: Electrical Installation Duration: 6 weeks Course Description: This course is intended to teach trainees the basic skills of the electrical installation labourer in all aspects of the construction industry. Training will focus on planning and preparing for electrical installation in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards as well as the JS21 standards for the industry. The trainees will be engaged in practical situations and learn to use acquired knowledge and skills to benefit to install, maintain domestic wiring and lighting systems. Course Objectives: At the end of the course trainees should be able to: i. ii. iii. iv. Develop an understanding of the OH&S procedures in relation to electrical installation Develop an understanding of the JS21 electrical standards and apply it to the installation and maintenance of domestic circuits. Install fixtures and accessories in domestic circuits Perform basic electrical tests to determine compliance with the safety and JS21 standards Course: Domestic Electrical Installation

Rationale Electricity is most common source of energy for homes, commercial centres and industrial plants. Issues relating to the installation and maintenance of domestic electrical wiring are most crucial among home owners. There is a need to have a deeper understanding of how domestic electrical circuits are installed and maintained in accordance with the JS21 electrical standards. Unit 1: Following Standards Workplace Practices- Week 1 1.1. Electrical safety rules with reference to JS21 standards

1.2. Electrical and equipment safety 1.3. Occupational health and housekeeping duties 1.4. Principles of performing manual handling and lifting

Unit 2: Conducting installation procedures- Week 2-5 2.1 Discussion and explanation of conducting installation procedures with reference to JS21 standards. 2.2Termination techniques-making joints and terminations to fixtures and accessories 2.3 Demonstration and preparation of cable for installation 2.4 Installation of lighting circuits 2.5 Installation of plug and lighting circuits 2.6Installation of special plugs and lighting circuits 2.7 Discussion and explanation of earthing systems 2.8 Demonstration of conduit bending and installation 2.9 Demonstration of cutting and installation of trunking 2.10 Installation of a complete domestic circuit

Lab (Practical) 1. Proper use of fire extinguisher 2. Lifting technique 3. Perform housekeeping duties 1. Stripping, terminating & joining cables 2. Install lighting circuit (1 lamp) controlled from one position using sheathed cable 3. Install lighting circuit (2 lamps) controlled from one position using sheathed cable Connect lamps in series Connect lamps in parallel 4. Install lighting and power circuit consisting two lamps and 110V socket outlet using sheathed cable. Lamps should be controlled from two positions Lamps should be controlled from three positions 5. PVC Conduit bending technique 6. Install lighting and power circuit consisting of two lamps and a 110V socket outlet using PVC conduit 7. Trunking installation technique 8. Install lighting and power circuit consisting of two lamps and a 110V socket outlet using PVC trunking 9. Installation of low voltage circuit (Bell circuit)

Major Lab (Assessment) Given a task demonstrate the correct lifting techniques then perform housekeeping duties. Using the given materials and tools complete a basic domestic installation comprising of lighting, power and signal circuit on a 120 cm x 120 cm workboard.
