Campus wont cool down any time soon

Hillete warner GazeTTe sTaff As temperatures rise from the heat wave across Ontario, the buildings on Westerns campus are heating up with it. If you are waiting for a blast of cool air to circulate through your classroom, you will be waiting a long timeperhaps well into final exams. Rod Chrichton, power plant manager at Western, explained the starting date for turning on the two major cooling systems on campus is much later than people are hopingusually around April 15. The operations and management group will start filling up the buildings, and then we start firing up the chillers, and it will be done normally in early May, Chrichton said. There are multiple groups involved in setting up the air conditioning system on Westerns campus. The power plant looks after the chillers, which supply the cold water to the buildings. The operations and management group from the facilities management division oversee the filling of the systems in the buildings themselves. What typically has happened in the past is that around April 15, they start to fill up the buildings, Chrichton explained. Once the buildings are full, then we start the chillers up, and we work out all of the bugs that happen while everything has been sitting over the winter. Chrichton noted the air conditioning is not turned off in all of the buildings. This is [a] very unusual end of winter, very early spring, and we have put on [the air conditioning in] a couple of buildings. Robarts [Research Institute] has been put on, and we are now right in the process of putting on Perth residence. Robarts is located on Perth Drive and houses animals for research. The power plant received complaints from the research facility, and capitulated to their request to turn on the buildings air conditioning. They have their own chiller, and its a smaller system, so its a little easier to put on, Chricton said. According to Chricton, the power plant has not moved up the start day to prepare the air conditioning system. He explained that if the temperature drops back down, the coils could freeze up, causing bigger problems. What can happen is the [operations and management] groups

Andrei Calinescu GazeTTe

fill up the buildings too early and we have a cold snap, like a freeze, Chricton explained. If they fill them up too soon, and we go below zero [], those coils can freeze up and theres a bigger problem in having to replace them, so theres risk management involved in doing that too soon.

Andrew Forgione, president of the University Students Council, remained adamant this was the right precaution to take. Yesterday, he tweeted, Air conditioning on campus: cooling coils take 3 weeks to fill [with] cold water to service over 90 buildings. Expensive & weather may change.

However, Chricton noted the power plant might turn on the air conditioning if the temperatures remain this high. Long term, if the weather looks like its going to stay mid teens, upper teens, theyre going to have to move up their start date, Chricton said

City rolls out news rules for methadone

Sean Previl GazeTTe sTaff Londons methadone clinics are going to see changes to where they can be located and how they operate in the coming weeks after the London city council approved new rules on Tuesday. The city has effectively put a plan in place that we didnt have before, Joe Swan, councillor for Ward 3, explained. These rules will govern where clinics can locate, how many will be there, and to make sure theyre not in locations close to schools or parks. After several debates, the council was finally able to come to a consensus on the rulesbut not without some conflicting thoughts. One of the biggest concerns with the rules was a change to the cutoff rate of prescriptions. Any new businesses that exceeded a rate of 40 prescriptions per day would be considered a clinic. When a cutoff just kind of appears out of nowhere, we ask why theres that cutoff, Rosemary Bennett, communications officer for the Ontario Human Rights Commission, explained. Methadone is becoming quite a common treatment, and its not like in the old days where you figured there were heroin addicts on every corner. Thats not the reality of methadone clinics. What were saying is, unless theres a very good reason for picking an arbitrary number, you need to look at that. Is it to avoid swarming of these undesirables in the neighbourhood? Its really hard to tell whats behind that decision. Zoning was the other issue on the table for the new methadone clinic rules, with the rule requiring all clinics to be no less than 300 metres from elementary and secondary schools, parks and recreational areas, and the Boys and Girls Club of London. Swan elaborated on city councils reasoning in the decision. The [reason] is for public safety and security, as we wanted to make sure that they werent so closely located to where children gather or where young persons gather. Its well known that some clinicsnot all, but some clinicsattract drug dealers and different people trying to prey on the vulnerability of patients, Swan explained. Bennett had concerns about the zoning issues for all clinics. When we read the rule we kind of looked at it and thought, is this making assumptions about the people using the clinic? In those cases we would ask, are you therefore punishing the people who have to use the clinic because of other peoples behaviour? And if it becomes a behaviour issue, we question whether it should be considered a zoning issue, Bennett said. The rules that have been put in place may still face problems dependent on individuals in the community. If somebody asked us to step in, we would take a closer look at it of course, Bennett explained. Our role in this right now is just to basically ask the questions, and depending on how London answers the questions, and whether they do answer the questions, will better dictate our course of action.

three caught rIdEn dirty

The London Police Service announced they made three drunk driving-related arrests this past St. Patricks Day after over 700 Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere spotchecks. Three males in their 20s were arrested, all dressed in green. The first arrest occurred at approximately 6 p.m., when a 29-year-old man was arrested for impaired driving at York Street and Ridout Street. Around the same time, there was a five-car collision at Oxford Street near Elizabeth Street, where one of the drivers, a 21-year-old man, was arrested for impaired driving. Later, after po-

lice had blockaded Richmond Row to protect drunken revellers from traffic, a 23-year-old man was arrested for impaired driving when he tried to drive into the area. According to a media release from Dennis Rivest, media relations officer for the London Police Service, RIDE spotchecks were carried out throughout the day, until all police efforts had to be diverted to deal with the drunken mayhem on Fleming Street. The entire incident was captured by the museums surveillance camera, which recorded the unknown vandals as they started kicking and jumping on the sculpture, as well as taking pictures of themselves on it. The suspects also ripped off the rhinos horn. According to Matt Thomas, marketing coordinator at Museum London, despite the presence of security cameras, this sort of thing happens all too often. This is probably the fifth time or so [this has happened]and [it happened] just last year, earlier in the fall, Thomas said. So far, authorities have been unable to identify the perpetrators. Although their identities arent extremely clear, its pretty much safe to say if people are familiar with these two, theyll be able to recognize them on the video, Thomas said. Footage from the video security has been sent to the police, and the video can be found online. If anyone recognizes who those people are, they can contact Crime Stoppers, Thomas added. No fro-yo, yo
Fro-yo was no-yo at the Spoke earlier this week, with the popular cool treat running out both Monday and Tuesday due to rising temperatures. Demand has definitely spiked with the warm weather, Mark Leonard, food and beverage manager for the University Students Council, said. The Spoke uses frozen yogurt in a number of products, from smoothies to yogurt parfaits. We are currently selling tart frozen yogurt to about 350 customers per day, Leonard said. Spoke frozen yogurt is supplied by Toronto-based company TFI. We have to quickly to quickly react with increased ordering and staffing levels, Leonard explained. We did run short this week due to a supplier delivery issue. We have doubled our normal order this week to ensure good supply to the end of the school year. Leonard concluded that strong frozen yogurt sales are now playing a big part in the Spokes growth. Gloria Dickie

men suffer from performance anxiety

If youre looking for a summer job, you might want to get some advice from your girlfriend. According to new research by a Western PhD candidate, while women tend to experience higher anxiety during job interviews, they are better at coping with the stress than men. What we were interested in was the link between interview anxiety and interview performance, researcher Justin Feeney explained. Not surprisingly, the higher you are in anxiety, the worse you perform. But Feeneys research, under the supervision of Western psychology professor Richard Goffin, found the link between anxiety and performance was weaker for women than for men. Feeney joined the team this year because he says the research piqued his interest. One thing Im thinking of doing for my dissertation is coaching men to cope basically like women do, he said.Hopefully this would neutralize the gender differences. Kaleigh Rogers

Kings to break ground on Breaking enclave up isnt the answer $14.7m student centre
Zalt of the Earth
aaron Zaltzman NeWs ediTor The student enclave near Fanshawe College sounds like the premise for a bad reality show: what happens when you take 82 neighbouring houses and pack them entirely with students? If that show were to be made, last Saturdays riot on Fleming Drive would definitely be the exciting finale, before the show was pulled off the air for being too damaging. It seems cancellation may be whats in store for the neighbourhood, as Fanshawe President Howard Rundle is proposing breaking the student monopoly on the rental units around the now-famous Fleming Drive. This would entail making it unattractive for landlords to rent to students. Its only natural that Fanshawe would want to do something to prevent another incident like the St. Paddys Day riot, and it seems that diluting the student population of the area would be effective in doing so. Its hard to imagine non-student residents would tolerate street parties and mattress burnings for too long before calling the police, so the chances of things getting out of hand would be severely lessened. On the other hand, Fleming cant be looking like an attractive place to live for non-students right now. A street full of drunken students is probably not the best environment for raising a family. It also remains to be seen exactly what benefits or punishments Fanshawe would use to influence landowners choice of tenants. This whole thing could end up being a very expensive endeavour for the school. The proposal itself also raises a civil rights concernit seems discriminatory to have a policy that would exclude people from renting a house just because theyre students. And while owners may choose to rent to whomever they want, its a fair bet that student groups will have a very serious problem with Fanshawe College influencing housing. Overall, it may not be a good idea for Fanshawe to start meddling in London housing. The backlash it may provoke outweighs the potential benefits of breaking up the student area. Parties happen in every place with a high student population, and the only difference between Broughdale Street and Fleming Drive is that there are no non-student residents to call the police before things get too crazy. The best way to deal with the enclave is vigilance. The police may not be able to face down several hundred drunks, but a large police presence can stop the initial mattress fires that lead to full-scale riots. The key is to plan ahead for events like St. Patricks Day and put a stop to things before they get out of hand. Fanshawe Colleges reputation may have taken a hit from the riot, but manipulating the housing market isnt the way to repair it.

The announcement of the new Darryl J. King student centre occurred in september, and construction will finally begin at the end of this month. the student-driven project was initiated six years ago.

Connor Hill GazeTTe sTaff Kings University College is breaking ground on a new student centre at the end of this month. The Darryl J. King Student Centre will have outdoor patios, green spaces, a fitness centre, a theatre stage, casual places to hang out with friends and other amenities. It will also be connected to the Cardinal Carter Library. It was actually originally a much smaller project, but the students wanted a full basement, David Sylvester, principal of Kings, explained. The theatre, green space, another lounge and three classrooms were added to the plans just before Christmas. Students held signs after Kings student congress meetings saying Build the basement. This whole project has been student-driven. It really was a pri-

ority identified by students six years ago, Sylvester said. He noted Kings has greatly increased enrolment over the past decade, but the grounds havent grown with them, which is something the student centre is poised to fix. Aside from providing students with a place to lounge, the 40,000 square-foot centre will also create jobs. There are jobs that are related to the construction of the facility, and then there are the jobs related to operating the different components, Robert Collins, director of workforce development at the London Economic Development Corporation, said. While the building continues to operate, there will be everything from custodial to food to program staff [working in the centre]. The construction is projected to create 110 jobs, while the student centre itself will require a projected 90 workers to run.

The centre is named after Darryl J. King, president of Logikor Inc. and former Kings student. He recently made a $1 million donation to the school, the largest donation Kings has ever received. The project will cost a projected $14.7 million total, an estimated $2.6 million of which is coming from students. But Kings students shouldnt worry about a tuition hike. No new fees have been levied with regard to this or any other building on campus, and none will be, Sylvester said. Since the 1990s, there has been a certain amount of money collected from student fees. Student council designates where it goes. Theyve [already] been contributing and they will be through 2015, until we reach that $2.6 million, Sylvester said.

Opinions
It gets better
Dan Savage, famous for being a co-founder of the It Gets Better project, is coming to Western tonight. The project began after a rash of gay teen suicides nearly two years ago, which prompted Savage to take action. While homophobia may not appear to be an issue at Western, thanks to services such as PrideWestern and AllyWestern, it does affect the population at large. The target audience for these videos are gay youths, most still in high school. High school is notorious for being terrible in terms of bullying, namecalling and immaturity. Arguably, things improve once youths enter the socially-progressive atmosphere of universities. Furthermore, the university setting facilitates the ability to move away from antagonists, and even the sentiments of an oppressive small town when heading off to a post-secondary institution. In fact, university students can often serve as a successful example for those still struggling. It can be inspiring to see someone older than you, who has gone through the similar experiences, become successful later in life. But sometimes, if things get too tough, LGBT youth need help immediately. Its not enough to say, In five years from now, things will be better, because its too hard to wait. The It Gets Better videos can also encourage those who arent gay to become allies, and be supportive of their LGBT peers. Its unfortunate that we have to promise these teens a better future, instead of things being OK now. Perhaps projects that focus on improving life in high school, such as gay-straight alliances, are more important than things like the It Gets Better project, because they target the problem at the source. However, these videos have a large reach, ensuring the message reaches millions of people. But just how influential are they? These videos are capitalizing on social media, and while there are many great things about them, they do run the risk of othering people further, especially when placed on the Internet where commentators can be antagonistic, while hiding behind anonymity. Overall, its rare that these campaigns can actually hurt. Savages visit to campus tonight will probably see many people familiar with the issues LGBT youth face, and maybe a few people open to new ideas looking for inspiration. The Gazette Editorial Board

Endorsing celebrity endorsements

Hit em where it Hurst
Jesica Hurst arTs & life ediTor Earlier this month, the first You Can Play Project video was uploaded on YouTube, gaining just over 180,000 views in two weeks. The campaign, created by Brian Burke, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and his son Patrick, a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers, has a simple goalto help support and gain equal rights for LGBT athletes around the world. Instead of giving LGBT athletes the chance to speak out about their own experiences in organized sports, the video features several professional hockey players, including Rick Nash, Duncan Keith and Joffrey Lupul, showing their support and helping to spread the seven-word mantra: If you can play, you can play. In a world that revolves around entertainment, sports and pop culture, I really dont think the Burke family could have made a better decision for their campaign. When it comes to spreading an important message or gaining awareness for a cause, celebrity endorsement is definitely the way to go. I guess it can be argued that these athletes, or other celebrities who have endorsed a campaign, are doing it for the wrong reason. I mean, why wouldnt someone in the spotlight jump on a movement just to get some extra cash or publicity time? But in my opinion, none of that should even matter since the benefit of their image or voice will always outweigh their personal motives. If we look a little closer at the benefits of celebrity endorsement in this video specifically, just think about how many kids these athletes are role models for. A child who has been raised in a homophobic environment may see this video and see their icon supporting the project, and it may help them challenge their own beliefs and help them think for themselves. Regardless of what they end up supporting, videos like this help get people talking and asking questions. Celebrity endorsement also helps bring campaigns to the next level by giving them more credibility and PR coverage. Organizations like PETA wouldnt have been nearly as successful without the support of personalities like Pamela Anderson and Perez Hilton. When celebrities like this end up doing radio interviews or talk shows, theyll likely be asked about the campaign theyre supporting, which in turn helps reach more supporters. But the most important reason why celebrity endorsement works the best is the fact that these people have been trained to talk and deal with the media. Earlier this week, Jason Russell, filmmaker for the Invisible Children organization and creator of the Kony 2012 video, reportedly suffered reactive psychosis due to extreme stress after the video went viral. Russell obviously didnt know how to handle the negative feedback like a professional hockey player would have. If the campaign had chosen to feature a celebrity in the 30-minute video instead, there wouldnt be such negative repercussions. Instead of looking at the negative aspect of celebrity endorsement, we need to support it. Using celebrities to raise awareness is a fantastic tool and can help give projects like You Can Play the public attention it needs.

Protein best in small portions

Re: Meat Matters: The correlation between red meat consumption and cancer rates (March 20, 2012) To the Editor: I am writing regarding an article in the March 20 issue about the consumption of red meat. I think its great that the Gazette includes these kinds of articles because it provides busy, stressed-out students with a quick and easy way to learn more about making healthy choices. One issue that this article touched on was protein intake and I just wanted to expand on this. Too much protein can actually have detrimental health effects. High protein consumption results in the build-up of ketones in your body, which need to be removed. The excretion of these ketones puts your kidneys under a lot of stress and requires large amounts of water, putting you at risk of dehydration and subsequent kidney issues. Another risk of a high protein diet is the tendency to consume high-fat meat and dairy products, which are unhealthy, especially if they are consumed in large quantities. These days it seems almost everything has some kind of health risk associated with it, but its important to be aware and have the ability to make educated decisions. And remember, moderation is key. No ifs, ands or Hurlbuts

ryan Hurlbut illusTraTioNs ediTor About four years ago, I decided I needed a new computer, so I bought one. This is a great computer! I told myself, as I dropped $2,000 dollars on the Dell website. At first, the computer seemed lovely, but it quickly turned into a nightmare machine. Windows Vista was inoperable, the speeds were

unbearable, and I was inconsolable. Upon being told that I would receive money for a new computer this March, I decided to try something new and build it myself. There are many pros and cons to building ones own computer. You cannot build a Macunless you want a Hackintoshand you have to take some time out of your day, but everything is way cheaper. The most important aspect of building a computer is education, and I highly recommend it. There are an innumerable amount of computer-building tutorials online, and these can turn even a technologically incompetent person into a computer genius. It

takes less than 10 parts to make a computer, and the process can be further aided by printing out instructions or following along with a Youtube video. Because building a computer seemed so intimidating to me, I decided to recruit my friend who had done it before. This turned out to be the best idea, as it not only gave me some veteran advice, but also an extra pair of hands, the latter of which proved integral. With four hands and two brains, a frustrating process turns into an almost enjoyable one, as the whole thing took under five hours. Computer parts are generally labelled well, and fit together like a

jigsaw puzzle. There are only a few parts where something can go horribly wrong, and even my vigorously trembling hands were able to easily complete these. Even if I had messed up, there are simple ways to make sure everything ends up okay. By building my own computer, I was able to create a machine that would have retailed for three to four thousand dollars for less than half of that price. I doubt that I will ever buy a whole computer again, as I have learned a skill that gives me quality machines for a fraction of retail price, all at the small expense of a few hours of labour.

the Stanfields star keeps on rising

Emily Fister coNTribuTor Fusing elements of traditional rock n roll, bluegrass and a dash of Celtic influences, The Stanfields are a whirlwind of anthemic chants and furious vocal delivery. Despite their growing presence on the Canadian scene, theres still no place like Halifax. People are rooting for us at home and its a great feeling, Jon Landry, vocalist and guitarist, says. The Maritime music scene has warmly embraced the down-toearth Stanfields. Voted band most likely to make it big by Coast magazine and rising star of the year at the 2011 East Coast Music Awards, the nominations just keep rolling in. Were starting a dynasty, Landry jokes. Beyond the East Coast, the band has experienced large-scale success, playing the Vancouver Olympics and signing with Groundswell/ Warner. With most of their business done over the Internet, theyre proving its possible to be a successful band from the East Coast. With a booking agent in Toronto and Los Angeles, The Stanfields are small town guys with big connections. Reaching out to an audience isnt as difficult as it used to be. You dont have to be in a big music hub, says Landry. Halifax is a tight-knit community. The only real difference I see is geography. Every place in Canada feels like home. The next logical step for them was to put out a traditional, hardhitting rock album. Teaming up with acclaimed producer Mike

Cousins The Palm At the End of the Mind Saved by Vinyl This Halifax band has a certain spark going for them. Whether hidden behind the rapid mess of wildly strung guitars, a gravelly bass section, or their speedy division between a rhythm that sounds about 10 years younger, Cousins contains an indefinable grace. But the same elegance that Cousins utilizes cuts both ways. For their truly unique style that epitomizes rigid and unforgiving volume, whether from the bellowing lyrics or screeching electric, is yet to be tamed. In many ways, Cousins merely holds on to the bucking beat they establish, a makeshift hold made upon sporadic and random noise. The true challenge that remains is to see whether they are consumed by their style, and become little more than a headache, or learn a mastery of it. Matthew Hargreaves

Fraser, the new album is one step ahead of their debut, Vanguard of the Young & Reckless. Id have to say [Mikes] biggest claim to fame is engineering a track called Thunderstruck by a band by the name of AC/DC, says Landry. Hes also done work with Aerosmith, Metallica and Sam Roberts. Even though the sound is more cohesive, their new album, Death

& Taxes, promises to carry the same rambunctious attitude that made The Stanfields a household name in Halifax. Were hoping to build some bridges, Landry says, citing The Trews as a prime example of Canadian music success. Theyre very humble guys with a great sense of humour. And thats the kind of thing that keeps bands together. For their show at the London

Music Hall, fans can expect a good old Maritime party before The Trews take the stage. We get the party started, Landry says. Thats the motto, thats the lifestyle. Catch The Stanfields opening for The Trews tonight at the London Music Hall. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $26.50.

They have matured since 2009, and it shows in their ambitious new work. Opening in familiar territory, the albums first few songs are classic Said The Whalecatchy, poppy melodies, multi-layered vocal harmonies and lyrical odes to nature. For the majority of the album, the band pushes the boundaries of what fans have come to expectmany of the songs differ significantly in genre and influence. However, whether they have pushed the envelope too far will likely be a divisive question among old fans. Featuring guest musicians on violin, horns and saxophone, many of the songs flirt with new genres. The fast-paced Heavy Ceiling has a prominent dance beat, and by the end it seems almost surprising that the song has no electronic elements. Meanwhile, Big Wave Goodbye, a heartfelt tribute to Vancouver, begins quietly and builds to a triumphant crescendo of brass and vocals. Little Mountain marks an important turning point in the career of Said The Whale. They have expanded their horizons since their previous effort, exploring a range of sounds distinct from their older work. Leaving their innocence behind, the album is permeated by a contemplative, sometimes brooding feel. Countless bands have been criticized for deviating from their roots, and the same may occur for Said The Whale with their less open-minded fans. But the album does follow a somewhat logical evolution from their last two albums, and those fans who are willing to see their favourite band change will not be disappointed. Julian Uzielli

domination at nationals
Abelev and Takahashi post stellar results
mac Heslop coNTribuTor Theres taking an opponent to the matand then theres delivering a purple choke-hold to the competition. This past weekend, the Mustangs wrestling team put together one of their greatest performances of the season during the National Open Wrestling Championships in St. Catharines. [This was an] open tournament [with] not only varsity but all the guys who are on the national team. So it was really tough going in, but we had really good results, one of the best ever, Ray Takahashi, head coach of the Mustangs, said. Overall, seven Mustangs medalled with another nine wrestlers finishing in the top six. Two of the brightest Mustangs performances were courtesy of Steven Takahashi and Ilya Abelev. Steven won gold in both the junior and senior mens 55kg division. [Steven] was an underdog, definitely a lot of people didnt expect him to win. I knew it was going to be close. Hes competitive with those guys and hes had some tough matches, Takahashi said. 44kg division, and Western recruit Brian Cowan, who took bronze in the junior mens 50kg division. [Ouellette will] probably go to the Junior Pan-Ams, Takahashi said, due to Ouellettes recent success. Takahashi is also enthusiastic when discussing the potential addition of Cowan, a Dorchester native, to next years team. [Cowan] comes in and trains with us. Hes one of our homegrown guys, he said. Other significant recruits include Alyssa Medeiros and Ingmar Salvador-Guzman, both London natives, who Takahashi believes would provide additional strength to the varsity teams. As a whole, this event seemed to encapsulate the Mustangs season perfectly. We won the Ontario junior title for men and women, won the [Ontario University Athletics] for men, and our junior men just came second in the National Open. In the end, we were third in [Canadian Interuniversity Sport] for the men, which is pretty good too, Takahashi said. Building on this years success is pivotal, as the National Open will be coming to Western next spring. Were hosting next year. That

This was a milestone accomplishmentStevens gold was the first Western individual senior mens title since Russ Howes in 1987.
