10th grade English 1st Semester Unit 1 Poetry / Poetic Devices

Essential Question: Why do we have the urge to express ourselves? Connection to Content: Poetry is a form of expression and poetic devices help the author express him or herself in a more creative and effective way. ELA Standards: R 3.7 Figurative Language, W 2.4 Write persuasive compositions Assessment: Students will write a Portrait Poem that gives a clear picture of a loved one. They will include poetic devices and figurative language. Link to Unit 2 One of the reasons we express ourselves is to challenge authority (through music, poetry, speeches, etc.)

Unit 2 Research Paper & Macbeth

Essential Question for Research Paper: How does one effectively challenge authority? Connection to Content: People challenge authority when there is unrest. There are effective and ineffective ways to challenge authority. Figures in history will serve as examples of how to effectively challenge authority. ELA Standards: R 2.5 Analyze primary and secondary sources W 1.1, 1.6-1.9 Coherent thesis, citations, MLA, revise writing Assessment: Students will research a person who effectively challenged authority and write a research paper that focuses on the person and the essential questions. Students will complete multiple drafts and use correct MLA format and MLA citation. Link to 2nd EQ Conflict between authority and those how challenge it is usually a struggle for power.

Essential Question for Macbeth: Does absolute power always corrupt? Connection to Content: Absolute power corrupts is one of the main themes of Macbeth. ELA Standards: 2.4 Paraphrase an authors ideas and connect them to other sources Assessment: Students will create a soundtrack for Macbeth by choosing a variety of songs to correspond with selected scenes from Macbeth. Students will complete a writing assignment that explains the connection between the song and the scene, and they will give an oral presentation. They must include the themes, motif, and symbols of Macbeth. Link to Unit 3 We usually challenge authority to enact some type of change.

Unit 3 Animal Farm / Summative Assessment for Semester 1

Essential Question: What is the most effective method for change? Connection to Content: Animal Farm shows a revolution that devolves into oppression. The initial desire and goal of change is ultimately lost. This essential question ties into all aspects of semester 1. ELA Standards: R 2.4 Synthesize content from several sources, W 2.4 Write persuasive compositions Summative Assessment for Semester 1 Students complete a poster that answers the essential question. The poster will follow the AXES format. The answer to the essential question will serve as their Assertion. The eXample for the assertion will be a poem, and excerpt from their research paper, a passage from Macbeth or their Macbeth soundtrack project, and a passage from Animal Farm. Students will write an Explanation and show the Significance of each piece of evidence and how it connects to their assertion. Each piece of evidence represents a different unit of the semester.
