March23,2012

A weekly bulletin for Parents and Students

Dear Parents, Did you know that today March 23, 2012 represents the movie release date for the Hunger Games? Maybe if you have a middle school child you will know this already, however at ISM we are all very excited about this movie, as one of our alumnae is set to make her international acting career in the movie! Tara Macken, class of 2002 and former member of Dance Co plays a major role in the movie. Tara is an accomplished stunt artist and with this movie is branching into mainstream acting. Here is a link to some of her work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Tw41E_oJ7I This will be the last bulletin before the school holiday break. As you know school is out next Thursday, March 29 and we will resume classes on Tuesday April 10. Seniors are busy with exams this week and next and then when they come back after the holiday they will receive feedback on their exam performances and move straight into a review program in most of their IB classes. For those athletes in third season IASAS there will be just one day of school and then they will leave for their respective competitions; Track and Field to Taipei, Badminton to Kuala Lumpur and Softball to Singapore. Please make sure you have all your childs documentation and assignment sheet are completed on time and according to schedule as it will be a very tight schedule this year. Good luck to all out athletes. We wish them all the best as they compete with BEARCAT pride. Another important date to put in your planners is Monday April 16 which is the official opening of the IB2 Film and Visual Arts festival. The FAT Lobby will have on display exquisite artwork collated from the two year IB program and inside the FAT Films from IB and grade 9/10 classes will be shown as part of the annual ISM Film Festival. Dont miss it! I wish everyone a very relaxing school holiday. It has been a long session since January and this will be a welcome chance to recharge batteries ready for the final sprint through the months of April and May. Remember we finish the school year slightly earlier this year with Graduation on Tuesday May 29 and the final day of school for all other students is on Thursday May 31. Please ensure that students are in class and focused right through until the end of school. If you are leaving ISM it is also very important to secure the withdrawal papers and to let us know as soon as you possibly can. Places are at a premium and it is certainly easy for us to make admission plans, if we know what places we have available. One final plug from me is that in the week after school finishes I would strongly encourage all grade 10 and 11 students to consider the excellent ISM Bearcat Student work experience program that we launched last year. The program has grown exponentially and we have some fantastic opportunities for ISM students to experience the real world of work. Before you book those flights talk to Mr. McQueen about this great program. Kind regards,

William Brown High School Principal

FROM THE GUIDANCE OFFICE:

Dear Current Grade 10 and 11 parents, Is your son or daughter ready for the REAL WORLD? How would you like your child spend 5 days (June 4th to 8th) right after our school year finishes learning more about a company/industry/career he/she is curious aboutand maybe even getting a bit of work experience at the same time.

Welcome to The Bearcat Career Experience

As you all know well, high school for students is (among many things) a time of self-discovery. It is a time where you begin to better acknowledge your aptitudes/likes, where you hone your strengths and where you begin to sort through that rather complicated map know as your educational and future career path. Unfortunately, it is often a map with gaps between what you learn in your academic classrooms and the real world your teachers are working to prepare you for. In short, we hope to help bridge that gap for selected ISM students through a 5 day summer internship right after high school finishes in June with various companies in the Metro Manila area. During this internship, your child would essentially work (without pay of course) at a particular company, handling various level appropriate responsibilities and/or job shadowing a selected employee(s). Numerous reputable companies have already signed up and will be offering internships/job shadowing placements to our ISM students. They include (among many others): Alaska Milk Corporation, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Makati Medical Center IMPORTANT : Students can see ALL the current placements we have on the Grade 9/10 Bulletin Board inside the HS Counseling Office (Room 1062). Additional placements may be added to students should check it periodically. If your son or daughter is interested in possibly being selected for a Bearcat Career Experience, he/she MUST complete the following four tasks below no later than Friday April 20th: 1. Complete a detailed resume (companies may see it) for yourself through the Resume Builder on Family Connection. 2. Complete the attached Short Essay Question and attach it as a journal entry in Family Connection. 3. Complete the attached Student Application and attach it as a journal entry in Family Connection. Also hand in a signed hard copy of the application to Mr. McQueen.

4. Complete the attached Liability and Permission Form and attach it as a journal entry in Family Connection. Also
hand in a signed hard copy of the form to Mr. McQueen. IMPORTANT On the Student Application, your son/daughter MUST indicate 3 placements in order of personal preference. We will try to give him/her the #1 choice but that may not be possible. He/she MUST be willing to attend any of the three placements he/she chooses if your child is going to participate in this program. Best Regards, Mr. McQueen

FROM THE OPERATIONS AND SECURITY OFFICE: A few reminders from the Operations and Security Office: ID Cards: ID cards should be worn by adults at all times while on campus. If you have not been issued an ID card, or you have lost it, you should obtain one by visiting the security office and completing the appropriate application form. Drivers, helpers and bodyguards: Drivers, helpers and bodyguards should not be waiting on campus for students throughout the school day. After dropping off students they should exit the school grounds and not return more than 30 minutes before dismissal time. Those who repeatedly fail to comply with this regulation will have their access privileges suspended. Only those vehicles carrying parents or other people with business within the school will be allowed to return to the campus before 1:45 pm. Firearms: All members of the ISM community are reminded that it is strictly forbidden for firearms to be brought onto campus. This includes concealed weapons carried by bodyguards for close protection. Any person arriving at school with a firearm should inform the gate guard and arrangements will be made for the weapon to be safely and securely stored during the visitors stay. Parking outside the campus: Parking is not allowed on any of the roads surrounding the school. The ISM guard force is actively supporting the work of the Bonifacio authorities in keeping these roads clear. This is an important security measure and parents are asked to emphasize this to their drivers. Termination of employment: In the event of the termination of service of a family employee parents are asked to secure the former employees ISM ID card and return it to the security office. If this is not possible, it is important that the security office is still informed of the change of circumstances. Security staff directions: Our security team is endeavoring to make the school as safe and secure an environment as possible for all members of our school community. We ask that everybody cooperates with us in this important task by following the directions given by members of our guard force. In the event that anyone is unclear as to the purpose of our regulations they can seek clarification from the security office. Further to this, we encourage parents to advise those members of their staff who enter the school of these expectations. Finally, I would like to thank all members of the ISM community for their assistance in helping us maintain ISM as a safe and secure environment for our children. Mike Flynn Director of Operations and Security
