What happens when Europeans head out into the world to take territory?

They encounter other cultures, and both cultures are changed by this encounter. This process is called acculturation.

Acculturation: the process of modifying one culture through influence or contact with another culture (when 2 cultures meet) 4 types:

Accommodation: two cultures live side by side, keeping their own identity, while sharing some aspects of each culture with the other Assimilation: when the less powerful culture is merged with the dominant culture so that its identity is lost or weakened Segregation: when the two cultures are kept separate & sharing does not occur; usually one culture is dominant & wishes to remain separate Annihilation: when the dominant culture destroys the weaker culture

The application of an acculturation model creates change and, therefore has consequences. The first Europeans were interested in exploiting the resources of the New World rather than in establishing colonies. The fur trade became the first major European economic activity in North America. The fur trade established a pattern of resource exploitation that was to be replicated in the following centuries. It involved the exporting of a relatively unprocessed raw resource to meet the demands of a foreign market. There existed little concern over exploitation practices. As geographic regions were depleted of fur-bearing animals, new sources of furs were sought. The fur trade permitted an opportunity to apply European technology, in the pursuit of European economic and political goals. The trade and technology associated with the trade had profound consequences for both the First Nations and the land. While the Europeans were primarily engaged in the fur trade and fishery, there was little conflict with the First Nations over the ownership of the land Indeed, those engaged in the fur trade wished to maintain good relations with the First Nations. Their trade depended it. The fur trade promoted increasing contact between the Europeans and the First Nations.

The Europeans needed the trapping and geographic expertise of the First Nations to obtain valued beaver pelts. European goods, received in exchange for furs, became increasingly desired by many of the First Nations peoples. VIDEO
