Foreword
Today there are many able and good teachers of the manasik of Hajj and
Umrah, but few books are focused on a simple, easy to follow set of
instructions that would allow the completion of these important acts of
Ibadah to be performed and/or memorized easily. The aim of this book
was to accomplish that. Many of the dua’s and sayings in the Arabic have
been taken from the Sunnah and are only the ones familiar amongst the
first community of the Muslims or the well known riwayat from Allah’s
Messenger (salalahu alayihi wassalam).
What is ‘Umrah
‘Umrah is the lesser pilgrimage and it is derived from al-I‘ttimar which
means “the visit” where al-Mu‘ttamer assumes Ihram from the Miqat,
performs the Tawaf of al-‘Umrah then performs Sa‘y and releases his
state of Ihram either by hair shaving or hair shortening.
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Allah’s
Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “The one ‘Umrah to the following
‘Umrah is an atonement for what is between them, and the accepted Hajj
is not rewarded except by paradise”.
Jabir ibn Abdullah (May Allah be pleased with him)
narrated that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “The pilgrims
and those performing ‘Umrah are the delegation of Allah, when they
beseech Him He will grant them their quest, and when they seek His
forgiveness, He will forgive them”.

The following are the verses of the Quran that deal with Hajj &
Umrah (Pilgrimage)

AL-BAQARA (THE COW)

1. Surely the Safa and the Marwa (two

mountains in Makkah) are among the
signs appointed by Allah; so whoever
makes a pilgrimage to the House or
pays a visit (to it), there is no blame on
him if he goes round them both; and
whoever does good spontaneously, then
surely Allah is Grateful, Knowing.
2:158
2. They ask you (O Muhammad) concerning the new moon. Say: They
are times appointed for (the benefit of) men, and (for) the pilgrimage; and
it is not righteousness that you should enter the houses at their backs, but
righteousness is this that one should guard (against evil); and go into the
houses by their doors and be careful (of your duty) to Allah, that you may
be successful. 2:189
3. And accomplish the pilgrimage (the Hajj and Umrah) and the visit for
Allah, but if, you are prevented, (send) whatever offering is easy to
obtain, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its
destination; but whoever among you is sick or has an ailment of the head,
he (should effect) a compensation by fasting or alms or sacrificing, then
when you are secure, whoever profits by combining the visit with the
pilgrimage (should take) what offering is easy to obtain; but he who
cannot find (any offering) should fast for three days during the pilgrimage
and for seven days when you return; these (make) ten (days) complete;
this is for him whose family is not present in the Sacred Mosque, and be
careful (of your duty) to Allah, and know that Allah is severe in requiting
(evil). 2:196
4. The pilgrimage is (performed in) the
well-known months; so whoever
determines the performance of the
pilgrimage therein, there shall be no
intercourse nor fornication nor
quarrelling amongst one another; and
whatever good you do, Allah knows it;
and make provision, for surely the
provision is the guarding of oneself, and
be careful (of your duty) to Me, O men of understanding. 2:197
5. There is no blame on you in seeking bounty from your Lord, so when
you hasten on from "Arafat", then remember Allah near the Holy
Monument, and remember Him as He has guided you, though before that
you were certainly of the erring ones. 2:198
6. Then hasten on from the Place from which the people hasten on and
ask the forgiveness of Allah; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. 2:199
7. So when you have performed your devotions (manasik), then laud
Allah as you lauded your fathers, rather a greater lauding. But there are
some people who say, Our Lord! Give us in the world, and they shall
have no resting place. 2:200
AL-IMRAN (THE FAMILY OF IMRAN)
8. In it are clear signs, the standing place of Ibrahim, and whoever enters
it shall be secure, and pilgrimage to the House is incumbent upon men for
the sake of Allah, (upon) every one who is able to undertake the journey
to it; and whoever disbelieves, then surely Allah is Self-sufficient, above
any need of the worlds. 3:97

AL-MAEDA (THE TABLE SPREAD)

9. O you who believe! Fulfill the
obligations. The cattle quadrupeds are
allowed to you except that which is
recited to you, not violating the
prohibition against game when you are
entering upon the performance of the
pilgrimage; surely Allah orders what He
desires. 5:01
10. O you who believe! Do not violate
the signs appointed by Allah nor the sacred month, nor (interfere with)
the offerings, nor the sacrificial animals with garlands, nor those going to
the sacred house seeking the grace and pleasure of their Lord; and when
you are free from the obligations of the pilgrimage, then hunt, and let not
hatred of a people - because they hindered you from the Sacred Masjid -
incite you to exceed the limits, and help one another in goodness and
piety, and do not help one another in sin and aggression; and be careful of
(your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is severe in requiting (evil). 5:02
11. O you who believe! Allah will certainly try you in respect of some
game, which your hands and your lances can reach, that Allah might
know who fears Him in secret; but whoever exceeds the limit after this,
he shall have a painful punishment. 5:94
12. O you who believe! Do not kill game while you are on pilgrimage,
and whoever among you shall kill it intentionally, the compensation (of
it) is the like of what he killed, from the cattle, as two just persons among
you shall judge, as an offering to be brought to the Kaaba or the expiation
(of it) is the feeding of the poor or the equivalent of it in fasting, that he
may taste the unwholesome result of his deed; Allah has pardoned what is
gone by; and whoever returns (to it), Allah will inflict retribution on him;
and Allah is Mighty, Lord of Retribution. 5:95
13. Lawful to you is the game of the sea and its food, a provision for you
and for the travelers, and the game of the land is forbidden to you so long
as you are on pilgrimage, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah, to Whom
you shall be gathered. 5:96
14. Allah has made the Kaaba, the
sacred house, a maintenance for the
people, and the sacred month and the
offerings and the sacrificial animals
with garlands; this is that you may know
that Allah knows whatever is in the
heavens and whatever is in the earth, and that Allah is the Knower of all
things. 5:97
AL-HAJJ (THE PILGRIMAGE)
15. Surely (as for) those who disbelieve, and hinder (men) from Allah's
way and from the Sacred Mosque which We have made equally for all
men, (for) the dweller therein and (for) the visitor, and whoever shall
incline therein to wrong unjustly, We will make him taste of a painful
chastisement. 22:25
16. And when We assigned to Ibrahim the place of the House, saying: Do
not associate with Me aught, and purify My House for those who make
the circuit and stand to pray and bow and prostrate themselves. 22:26
17. And proclaim among men the Pilgrimage: they will come to you on
foot and on every lean camel, coming from every remote path, 22:27
18. That they may witness advantages for them and mention the name of
Allah during stated days over what He has given them of the cattle
quadrupeds, then eat of them and feed the distressed one, the needy.
22:28
19. Then let them accomplish their
needful acts of shaving and cleansing,
and let them fulfil their vows and let
them go round the Ancient House.
22:29
20. That (shall be so); and whoever
respects the sacred ordinances of Allah,
it is better for him with his Lord; and
the cattle are made lawful for you, except that which is recited to you,
therefore avoid the uncleanness of the idols and avoid false words, 22:30
21. Being upright for Allah, not associating aught with Him and whoever
associates (others) with Allah, it is as though he had fallen from on high,
then the birds snatch him away or the wind carries him off to a far-distant
place. 22:31
22. That (shall be so); and whoever respects the signs of Allah, this surely
is (the outcome) of the piety of hearts. 22:32
23. You have advantages in them till a fixed time, then their place of
sacrifice is the Ancient House. 22:33
24. And to every nation We appointed acts of devotion that they may
mention the name of Allah on what He has given them of the cattle
quadrupeds; so your god is One God, therefore to Him should you
submit, and give good news to the humble, 22:34
25. (To) those whose hearts tremble
when Allah is mentioned, and those
who are patient under that which afflicts
them, and those who keep up prayer,
and spend (benevolently) out of what
We have given them. 22:35
26. And (as for) the camels, We have
made them of the signs of the religion of
Allah for you; for you therein is much good; therefore mention the name
of Allah on them as they stand in a row, then when they fall down eat of
them and feed the poor man who is contented and the beggar; thus have
We made them subservient to you, that you may be grateful. 22:36
27. There does not reach Allah their flesh nor their blood, but to Him is
acceptable the guarding (against evil) on your part; thus has He made
them subservient to you, that you may magnify Allah because He has
guided you aright; and give good news to those who do good (to others).
22:37

Leaving the residence:

It is customary to leave the house with a DUA.

ON THE AIRCRAFT
Just before leaving on the aeroplane, or while boarding, recite the takibir

ALLAHU AKBAR (3 times)

and then
ALLAHU-MAJREHA, WAMURSAHA
INNA RIBBI LA GHAFURUR RAHIM

For the purposes of this book, it is assumed that a visit to the city of
Madinah for a period longer than three days precedes the Umrah or Hajj.
If this is not the case take note of the following rules of Miqat for Umrah
or Hajj.

The Location of Miqat for Ihram:

It is the appointed place where a pilgrim may not proceed to Makkah
without being in a state of Ihram.
People coming to Makkah from different directions have different
locations (Miqat) for the start of Ihram:
The Miqat of the people of Madinah: Dhul- Hulaifa, also known as Abar
Ali.
The Miqat of the people of Sham: Al Juhfah (Rabegh).
The Miqat of the people of Iraq: Dhat 'Irq.
The Miqat of the people of Yemen: Yalamlam.

WHEN ONE ARRIVES IN MADINA, prepare for lodging (in this

case…………………, and try to perform ziyarats of the Messenger of
Allah’s Qabr, and other sites.
Visiting the Prophet (Peace be upon him), Qabr

The significance and virtue of the visit:

Scholars agree that the visit of the Prophet
(peace be upon him) is one of the greatest
blessings and best acts of submission. The
visitor must also intend to visit the
prophet's mosque as we were told that a
prayer there is better than a thousand
prayers in other mosques except for Al-
Masjid al-Haram.
And Ibn Umar (May Allah be pleased
with him) narrated that the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
"Whoever visits my grave surely will receive my intercession".
Etiquette of the visit:
• While heading towards Madinah, the visitor should send
blessings and salutations upon the Prophet (peace be upon
him) as much as possible and to beseech Allah to make him
benefit from his visit and to accept his deed, and he invokes:
(O Allah! Open the gates of Your Mercy for me and grant
me with the visit of Your prophet (peace be upon him) what
you have granted Your allies and obedient worshippers, and
pardon me and have mercy upon me. You are the best
Grantor).
• It is preferable to have a bath (Ghusl) before he enters
Madinah, to wear his cleanest clothes and to summon heartly
the honour of Madinah.
• So when he arrives at the door of the Prophet's Mosque
(peace be upon him), he should forward his right leg while
entering and his left leg when leaving.
• He enters and goes to Al-Rawda (the garden) (The area
between the pulpit and the tomb has a green carpet, whereas
the rest of the mosque has a red carpet). He prays two rak'as,
then goes to the prophet's tomb and he stands in front of his
honoured face (peace be upon him) at about four cubits (a
cubit is 18 inches) from the wall of the honoured tomb, in
absolute reverence. Then he salutes without raising his
voice, but in a tone between a concealed and an audible
voice, out of respect to the Prophet (peace be upon him).
• The visitor invokes with all his heart lowering his gaze and
voice in calmness and stillness:
"Peace be upon you Messenger of Allah, peace be upon you
Prophet of Allah, peace be upon you the dearly loved by
Allah, peace be upon you the best blessed among Allah's
creatures, peace be upon you the favoured by Allah, peace be
upon you chief of Messengers and the seal of the prophets,
peace be upon you leader of "al-ghorr al-muhajaleen" (those
who have white spots on their foreheads and are white-
footed from prayers and ablution), peace be upon you and
upon your sincere virtuous family, peace be upon you and
upon your chaste wives, mothers of the believers, peace be
upon you and upon all your companions, peace be upon you
and upon all good servants of Allah. May Allah reward you
Messenger of Allah on our behalf as best He rewarded a
prophet and a Messenger for his nation, and may Allah send
his blessings upon you whenever praisers mention you and
unmindful people forget mentioning you. I testify there is no
deity but Allah and I testify that you are His slave and
Messenger, His faithful trustee and the best among his
creatures. I testify that you have delivered the Message, and
fulfilled the Trust, and advised the nation and struggled for
the sake of Allah in the best way."
• (He who doesn't have enough time for that or is unable to
memorise the invocation, he may say some parts of the
mentioned form)
• Then he moves about a cubit to the right and greets Abu
Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) and says : "Peace be
upon you the Prophet's Caliph, peace be upon you
companion of Allah's Messenger in the cave, peace be upon
you his companion in travels, peace be upon you the keeper
of his secrets. May Allah reward you for Islam and Muslims.
O Allah! I ask You to be pleased with him and be pleased
with us for him".
• Then he moves about a cubit to the right and greets 'Umar
(May Allah be pleased with him) saying: "Peace be upon
you the leader of believers, peace be upon you by whom
Allah supported this religion. May Allah reward you the best
reward for Islam and Muslims. O Allah, I ask You to be
pleased with him and be pleased with us for him".
• Then he returns to the honourable Rawda (Garden) and prays
and invokes as much as possible.
Visiting Al-Baqi', the martyrs of Uhud and Masjid Qiba':
• It is desirable to go to Al-Baqi' everyday especially on
Friday morning after saluting Allah's Messenger (peace be
upon him). When he gets there, he says:
"Peace be upon you the home of the righteous believers, and
we are - by Allah's will - your followers. O Allah! Forgive
the dwellers of Al-Baqi', O Allah! forgive us and them".
The visitor should pay a visit to Masjid Qiba' to pray there as
the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to go to Qiba' riding
and walking, where he used to pray there two rak'as.
Preferably, this visit should be on a Saturday (if possible) as
the Messenger (peace be upon him) used to go there every
Saturday.
• It is also recommended to visit the martyrs of Uhud on
Thursday, especially the leader of martyrs Hamza - the uncle
of the prophet (peace be upon him).
Praying in Madinah:
• It is recommended to pray all the prayers in Al-Masjid al-
Nabawi (the Prophet's mosque). Abu Hurairah (may Allah be
pleased with him) reported that the prophet (peace be upon
him) said:
(A prayer in this mosque of mine is better than a thousand
prayers in other mosques except for al Masjid Al-Haram).
Leaving Madinah and travelling:
• It is desirable for the visitor when he wants to depart and
travel to take leave of the Prophet's mosque by performing
two rak'as and invoking for what he likes then he comes to
the Noble Presence (Al Hadra al-Sharifah), pays salutations
as he had done earlier and invokes with insistence earnestly
and says farewell to the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying:
"O Allah! Do not make this visit the last one to the Haram of
Your Messenger (peace be upon him) and make my return to
the two holy mosques an easy way by Your favor and grace,
grant me pardon, good health and protection in this world
and in the Hereafter ". And he says: "Not saying farewell
Messenger of Allah".

WHEN ONE LEAVES MADINA, (It is here where preparations for

Ihram begins)
It is now necessary to take GHUSL for Ihram in Madina., Here the
removal of hair, nails etc. can be performed. It is permissible to apply
clean smelling perfume at this stage, but not strong or pungent odours.

Now the traveller will make preparations to board the bus on the way to
enter Makkah. The bus will travel to Abir Ali, which is the place where
one will now enter Ihram properly.

At Makkah, the Labayk stops.
One enter now with a Niyyat for UMRAH. This niyat was previously
recited but can be recited again. (Since this is the months of Hajj -thus
tamatu-hajj) Remember a DUM is necessary in this case!

AT THE MASJID AL HARAM

Here it is required to enter at the BAB Salam

It is also regarded as Mustajab to make Du’ah at the MULTAZAM

NOW PROCEED TO DRINK ZUM_ZUM

After the Tawaaf and all things pertaining to it, prepare to do the SAA’I

DOING THE SAA’I

The SAAI is necessary after a RUN UMRAH or HAJJ TAWAAF.
There is no SAAI for a general sunnah tawaaf at any other time.
According to Malik, Ibr Umr, Aisha, Shafi, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, the Saai
is a RUKN.

The SAAI is performed between SAFA and MARWA, two hills about
420 meters apart, proceeding between it SEVEN TIMES.

CONDITIONS OF SAAI
One does not need Wudu or Ghusl to perform Saai
One does however need to perform it beginning at SAFA and ending at
MARWA

DUA’s AND THIKR TO RECITE

At the start say
ABDA-U- BIMMAA
BADA-ALLAHU BIHI
then
LAA ILLAHA ILLAHU WAHDAHULLA SHARIKALLA
LAHUL MULKU, WALAHUL HAMDU, YUHYI WA YUMIT
WAHUWA ALLA KULLI SHAY-IN QADIR

one can also recite

RABIGH FIR WARHAM , INNAKA ANTAL A’AZU AKRAM

AFTER SAAI:
CUT THE HAIR - one may not cut hair oneself. One must be out of
Ihram to cut another person’s hair

AT THIS STAGE: ONE IS RELEASED FROM IHRAM FOR THE

UMRAH!!! Now one is a resident in makkah after three days of staying .
The person may now proceed to the BAYT to rest. Other Sunnah ziyaters
and tasbeehs, sallahs, tawaafs may be performed as required.

The Logical Plan for the person

performing ‘Umrah

Ihram from the Miqat intending ‘Umrah

and saying Talbiyah

Performs Tawaf of ‘Umrah

Prays two rak‘as of Tawaf

Al Multazam – Zamzam

Performs Sa`y of Umrah

Haircut or shortening

Note: If the performer of ‘Umrah is in Makkah

and wants to perform another Umrah, then he
performs Ihram from al Taneem (the mosque of
Lady Aisha may Allah be pleased with her) then
he returns to Makkah for Tawaf and Sa‘y.

THE DAYS OF HAJJ AND THE RITES OF HAJJ

PROPER
Hajj begins on the 8th day of Dhil Hijja.
Here the person is a resident of Makkah and performs the Ghusl, Ans
IHram for Haj, Niyat for Haj, and two rakaat for Ihram in Makkah at the
BAYT.

Now the person proceed to travel to MINA and starts to LABAYK from
the Bayt.

AT MINA
At Mina the following waqts is performed
Fajr
Dhur
Asr
Maghrib
Ishaa
and then Fajr the next day
It could be advisable to pick up stones (70 stones per person =3days
stoning of the jamarats later)
Now it is the 9th day of Dhil Hijjah, and prepare to leave Mina after fajr.
Now proceed to the plains of ARAFAT

AT ARAFAT
At arafat it is required to be present , standing if possible, from the Waqt
of Dhur to sunset. The word ARAF means to acknowlede or to admit
knowledge (or to know).
This is also known as the day of Wukuf ( standing staying over).

Stay on Arafat and ask FORGIVENESS of ALL SINS, GREAT AND

SMALL.

Perform the Jamm salaah - Dhur and ASR combined.

DHIKR that MAY BE PERFORMED ON ARAFAT

one may recite:

LAA ILLAHA ILLAHU WAHDAHULLA SHARIKALLA
LAHUL MULKU, WALAHUL HAMDU,
WAHUWA ALLA KULLI SHAY-IN QADIR

Make plenty of Istighfar (ASTAGHFIRULLAH)

Also say Labayk
Make any dua for forgiveness
At Maghrib time, leave ARAFAT on the route to Muzdalifat. DO NOT
PERFORM MAGHRIB ON ARAFAT.
When Muzdalifat is reached, perform the maghrib and Ishaa JAMM
salaah.

AT MUZDALIFAH

A “wukuf” or stay-over at Muzdalifah is prefered.

It is important to perform the Maghrib and Isha salaah in the waqt of
Ishaa (Jamm salaah) at Muzdalifah
Alrady from Arafat to Muzdalifah it is known as Ifadat.
One can still make Labayk from Arafat to Muzdalifdat.
According to Abu Hanifah - the presence at Muzdalifat before Fajr is
necessary
According to Shafi- 2nd half night stay is necessary.
According to Malik - just unloading and uploading of luggage is
sufficient also..

At around 12:30 to 2 AM - > prepare to move from Muzdalifat to

Mina.(FIND A VEHICLE TO DRIVE TO MINA) ASK “ila mina”

AT MINA
The main task here is to throw the jamarat al-Aqabah on the day of
Slaughter (yowm-un Nahr). (this is Eid-ul Adha elsewhere)

Use the stones picked up at Muzdalifat.

SEVEN STONES is needed to pelt the Jamarat-ul Aqabah. It is necesary
to throw one stone at a time.
Generally the throwing time is after Fajr.
According to Malik it is permissible to send the women, children, infirm
ahead to Mina before anyone else arrived, and pray Subh and pelt the
stones.
According to Shafi the waqt for this stoning and tawaf al Ifadat begins in
the middle of the night , before Fajr on the day of Nahr and is
permissible, though it is regarded as better to throw after sunrise.

What to say when stoning:

Say “ ALLAHU AKBAR” whenever a stone is pelted.
It is permissible to stone from wherever possible.

After pelting the Jamarat al Aqaba and the prayer of Subh,

FIND TRANSPORTATION TO MAKKAH

It is necessary to find transportation as quickly as possible to perform the

tawaf al Ifadat. (ask “illa Makkah” for taxi’)

TAWAF AL IFADAT ( A RUKN)

Make niyat for tawaf-al- ifadat. MUST HAVE WUDU FOR THIS.
Perform Tawaf al Ifadat like any other tawaf then perform 2 raka’ats
salah.
This two raka’ats is performed for all Rukn tawafs.

PERFORM THE SAA’I

The saa’i is performed as before.

Now cut the Hair
ONE IS NOW RELEASED FROM IHRAM

It is now necessary to go back to Mina to reach there by say ASR TIME,

in order to remain over at Mina again. Now preparations for stoning the
Jamarats on the three days of Tasriq is underway.

There is a transmitted report from Shafi & Bayhaqi on the authority of

Aeysha (RA) that the concession to Umm Salma is applicable to others.
This concession was to throw on the day of Nahr before Fajr. Ibn al
Mundhir regards this throwing as Sahih but against the Sunnah.

THROWING THE JAMARATS ON THE DAYS OF TASHRIQ

Normal time: After Zawaal

Alternative time:: Throw at night of the 2nd day of Tashriq for the first
day.

Also permissible: To throw the jamarats after Fajr on the days of Tasriq
although differences of opinion in this is found.

Order of throwing the Jamarats:

FIRST Jamarat-ul ULA

SECOND Jamratul WUSTA

THIRD Jamaratul AQABA

Say : ALLAHU AKBAR or BISMILLAHI ALLAHU AKBAR for

every throw

One needs to throw the three Jamarats for two or three days.

THE TAWAF-AL WIDA -FAREWELL TAWAF(ONLY DO WHEN

ONE IS ACTUALLY GOING TO LEAVE MAKKAH)
The Ulama agree that the Tawaf Al Wida is a part of Shariah. The
Prophet said:”do not leave without your last moment spent at the Kabah.”
( ie. make Tawaf)
Do not dwell unnecessary after this tawaf. Malik, Shafi, ibn al Mundhir
agree that this is Sunnah. The Hanafis and Hanbalis say that it is wajib
and requires a Dum if not performed.
It is generally good to dust ones clothes after the farewell tawaf
A traveller is allowed three days to stay.

From here it is the journey home.
