Pg. 36 ASK students about recent inventions related to sharing ideas and information that has been almost as important as the printing press? INTERNET

Why internet is so important? For years people and scholars had to read a limited number of books and information available, sometimes they even had to travel long distances to get a book. INTERNET: o Information is made available around the world o Saves time and money of people (a lot of free information circulates on internet) o Internets increases productivity because it simply makes life easier o Shortens distances Distribute calculators to groups Write on the table o PRODUCTIVITY= output / worker hour EXPLAIN o Productivity: is the amount of goods produced by a certain numbers of workers, their resources, and the length of time worked. o OUTPUT: rate of resources used to creat goods and services o ASK: (BOARD) Determine productivity if 1 worker can complete 2 pg in one hour 2pg/1 hr = 2 pg per hour Other problem: scribes took 1 month to copy a 100pgs book If the scribed worked 40 hrs week and there were 160 worker hours (4weeks)what is the scribes labor productivity? 100 pages / 160 worker hr = 0.625 pages per worker hr Give students time to calc. LAST problem: one printer press could produce 500 books in a 40 hr workweek. If productivity was still being measured in pgs. and each book was 100 pgs. long, what is the printers labor productivity? 500 books* 100 pgs per book = 50000 pgs.

Productivity = 50,000/40 worker hours = 1250 pgs. Per worker hour Give students time to calculate. Share their response o BRAINSTORM: make lists of other inventions that have changed productivity o Tell them to Consider not only technological advances, thare are also advances in transportation.
