Ssl@lla)Stop bead
Use a stop bead
to secure beads
remporarily when
you begin stitching. Choose a bead that,
5s distinenly different from the beads in
your project. String the stop bead about
6 in (15em) from the end of your
thread, and go back through it in the
same direction. If desired, go through it
‘one more time for adied security.
Brick stitch
Work off a stitched Inder (see Ladder
stitch) Pick up two beads. Sew under
the thread bridge between the second
and third beads oa the ladder from back
to front. Sew up the second bead added
and then down the first. Come back up
the second bead,
For the row's remaining stitches, pick:
‘up one bead. Sew under the nexe thread
bridge on the previous row from back to
front. Sew back up the new bead.

To begin the other alternative method,
pick up all the beads you need to reach,
‘the length your pattern requires. Fold
the last ewo beads so they are parallel,
and sew through the second-to-last
bead again in che same direction (a+b).
Fold the next loose bead so it sits
ey parallel to the

the ladder, and
il sew through the
loose bead in the
same direction (a-b). Continue sewing
back through each bead until you exit,
the last bead of the ladder.
If you are working in tubular brick
oor Ndebele herringbone suite, sew your
ladder into a cing to provide » hase for
the new technique. With your thread
‘exiting the last bead in your ladder,
sew through the first bead and ther
back through the last bead, or cross the
needles through the first bead if you
are using the crossweave technique.

‘Tomake a rum, sew down through
the end bead of the previous row and
back throngh the last head of the paie
yr just added (a-b). Pick up two beads,
sew dowa through the next bead in the
previous row, and sew up through the
following bead (bc). Continue adding
pairs of beads across the row. You may
‘choose to hide the edge thread by
picking up an accent or smaller bead
before you sew back through the last
bead of the pair you just added.

Basics
‘To make a turn without having
thread show on the edge or adding
an edge bead, sew down through the
end bead in the previous row and up
through the second:-to-last head in the
previous row, and continue through
the last bead added (a-b). Pick up two
beads, sew down through the next
bead in the previous rows, and sew up
through the following head (b-0).
Continue adding pairs of beads across
the row. Using this turn will flatten
the angle of the edge bead, making the
edge stack look a litte different than
the others.

‘To begin row 3, pick upa bead, skip
the Last bead strung in the previous
step, and sew through the next bead in
the opposite direction (bec). For each
stitch, pick up a bead, skip a head in
the previous row, and sew through the
next bead, exiting the first bead strung
(@-a), The beads added in this row are
higher chan the previous rows and are
referred to as “up-beads.”
For each stzct in subsequent rows,
pick up a bead, and sew through the
next up-bead in the previous row (d=).
To count peyore stitch rows, count the
total number of beads along hoch
straight edges.
Peyote: flat odd-count
(Odd-count peyote is the same as even-
‘count peyote, except for the turn on
‘odd-numbered rows, where the last bead
of the row can't be attached in the
standard way because there is no up-
bead to sew into, The ode-row turn ean
be convoluted, so wo've simplified ie
haere. Please noce thatthe stare ofthis
simplified approach isa little different in
that the first beads you pick up are the
beads in cows 2 and 3. In the next step,
you work row 1 and do a simplified

rows 2 and 3 in the next step. If you're
working a pattern wich more than one

beads for the correct rows.
To begin the next cow (row 1), pick
up a bead, skip the last bead strung in
the previous step, and sew through the
next bead in the opposite direction
(b-c), Continue in this manner, exiting
the socond-to-last bead strung in the
previous row (o-d). For the final stil
in the row, pick up a bead, and sew
‘through the first bead strung again
(+0), The beads added in this row are
higher than previous rows and are
referred to as “up-beads.”
To work row 4 and all subsequent
even-numbered rows, pick up one bead
per stitch, exiting the end up-bead in
the previous row (a+b).
“To work row $ and all subsequent
‘odd-numbered rows, pick up one bead
