Critical Analysis Using Blooms Taxonomy: Affluenza

What is Blooms Taxonomy? Bloom's Taxonomy is a multi-tiered model of classifying thinking according to six cognitive levels of complexity. The levels have often been depicted as a stairway, which encourages learners to climb to a higher level of thought. Your Task The following exercises are aligned with the six levels of Blooms Taxonomy. With your group, complete the following questions on another sheet of paper (each group member should write on their own paper). Discuss the questions as you work. All group members should have the same answers for each question! Notice how the questions progress as you go along. Consult the synthesis essay sources as you work. 1. Knowledge: Remember previously learned information Verbs: tell, list, locate, write, find, arrange, define, describe, label, match, memorize Using the articles as a reference, write a definition for Affluenza. List the traits of a person who exhibits signs of Affluenza. 2. Comprehension: Demonstrate an understanding of facts Verbs: classify, identify, paraphrase, predict, recognize, discuss, describe, translate Explain in your own words what it means to spend too much. Think of a person you know who suffers from Affluenza. Write a description of that person without naming any names. It can be a person you know, a character in a book, movie, or TV show, or any other figure that fits the description. 3. Application: Apply knowledge to actual situations. Verbs: apply, demonstrate, interpret, illustrate, show, sketch, solve, dramatize Using a Venn diagram, compare and contrast spending by Americans in the past with their spending today. Refer to The American Consumer and All Stuffed Up for help.

Analysis: Break down objects or ideas into simpler parts and find evidence to support generalizations Verbs: calculate, categorize, model, infer, experiment, examine, diagram, discriminate Refer to the survey results and think about the role (if any) that Affluenza plays at Hoover High School. Write a response and explain in 4-5 sentences whether you feel it is or is not a problem, citing the survey results as evidence. 5. Synthesis: Compile component ideas into a new whole or propose alternative solutions Verbs: arrange, construct, design, revise, formulate, generate, compose, devise Using the resources provided, plan out a monthly budget. Your totally monthly income is set at $1000 a month. You must account for the following areas when considering your budget: o Rent for an apartment ($500/month) o Food (groceries) o Clothing o Miscellaneous expenses (cosmetics, toiletries, medicine, etc.) o Electricty ($75/month) o Entertainment (movies, concerts, etc) o Gas ($75/month) Each category must be budgeted outmeaning you should allot some amount of money per month to each of the categories. Make sure you do your math! Write an explanation of your choices in budgeting. 6. Evaluation: Make and defend judgments based on internal evidence or external criteria. Verbs: assess, judge, justify, support, value, interpret, defend, conclude, appraise This is an INDIVIDUAL activity. Each group member should assess the sources in the packet and choose which would be useful for his or her paper. Each member should take a note card and list the three (3) sources that best offer support of his or her claim and the one (1) source from the other side of the argument.
