IN THE NEWS
Tarporley homes plan approved DEVELOPERS have won their battle to push through plans for nearly 100 homes on farmland between Nantwich Road and the Tarporley by-pass. Cheshire West and Chester councillors gave the go ahead to Fox Strategic Land and Property to develop the site despite huge local opposition. Campaigners said the new development would eat up a chunk of the countryside and that the homes should have been built on a brownfield site instead. Tarvin planning concern PLANS for 130 homes in Tarvin would create big traffic problems, according to Tarvin Parish Council. The council has asked the developers Taylor Wimpey to look again at the scheme for Tarporley Road or spend a lot more money on road widening and markings.

Closure of Tarporley Youth Club?

TARPORLEy youth Club is in danger of closing due to cuts in funding. Currently, Connexions provide two qualified youth leaders to support the club each Monday evening during school term time. It now appears that due to a reduction in their funding the deployment of youth leaders will be targeted to areas thought to be in most need. This may mean that Tarporley will be considered as an area where Connexions is not needed. Tarporley youth Club has grown and developed over the two years plus that it has been in existence and is now a thriving meeting place for young adolescents. It is a valued part in the lives of many local young people from Tarporley and surrounding villages. It has fostered good relations between these young people and the other residents of Tarporley. The young people are involved in the management of their club so it encourages responsibility, maturity and a sense of purpose. To lose this club will have a very detrimental influence in Tarporley. Please write to Stephen OBrien the local MP to make him aware of the situation and ask him to use his influence to prevent this happening. Time is of the essence as Connexions support may be withdrawn in the very near future. Can you offer support to keep Tarporley youth Club going? If so contact any member of the Parish Council or the Clerk, who will pass your name to the members of the youth Club Committee.

JUNIORS

For boys & girls 7-11

A happy and healthy start to school life.

Those early school days really are a formative experience and junior children at The Kings School are certainly in the right place to make a great start to life.
A recent school inspection report described The Kings Junior School as a place of happy learners. Exactly what parents and their children want to hear. As well as providing boys and girls aged 7-11 with a challenging but accessible academic side to their education, Kings makes it fun to learn and play. Teachers and pupils work happily together in a safe, calm and stimulating environment with extensive and exclusive facilities in a self-contained school within the Kings campus. Boys and girls are encouraged to learn the way that best suits them, regardless of their gender helped and guided, every step of the way, by attentive staff and a varied and vibrant curriculum. Along with academic excellence, The Kings Junior School has a well-established reputation for music, drama, art and sport. Theres a wide choice of lunchtime and after school activities, and trips at home and abroad too. All of this helps them develop healthily as individuals and as part of a group, giving them a solid and lasting foundation for senior education and for the rest of their lives.

Young dancers take steps to exam success

YOUNG ballet dancers at the Pointe Works classes in Bunbury have achieved fabulous results in the Royal Academy exams. There were eight distinctions, 16 merits and six passes. In addition to this, all 20 children aged five who took the Royal Academys Pre-Primary in Dance were awarded medals which is a phenomenal achievement. Pointe Works now has 130 local children taking classes each week plus two very well attended adult ballet classes. Forest holiday park fears LOCAL people have raised concerns over plans for a holiday village in Delamere Forest. The Forestry Commission wants to allow 78 log cabins to be put up within the forest in order to bring in money. The holiday park, at Kingswood, would also include 300 car parking spaces, a new visitor centre, restaurant and shops. But local campaign group Communities Against Delameres Destruction (CADD) are worried about the potential impact on the forest wildlife, public access, and increased traffic and parking. Going batty in Beeston A RARE species of bat has been found at Beeston Castle. Volunteers from the Cheshire Bat Group discovered the lesser horseshoe bats during a hibernation check recently. The species has not been seen in Cheshire since 1948

with Angela Bartlett
Q. I am going on a long flight for my holiday this year and my friend has suggested that I mist my face with a water spray to help moisturise it. Is this a good idea? A. Misting your face with water will actually dry your skin out further because as the water evaporates it will deplete the NMF (natural moisturising factor) of your skin. You need to find a spritzer which contains humectants such as hyaluronic acid, sodium pca, glycerine or aloe vera to bind water molecules onto your skin so keeping it well moisturised. Also, try using special moisturising serums which can be used under your normal moisturiser and reapply your moisturiser liberally at regular intervals. If its a night time flight try using a translucent moisturising mask to replenish the moisture levels while you are sleeping. Have a great holiday! Q. How can I make my ageing lips look younger and fuller? I dont want to have surgery, injections or use lip plumping products. A. As we age unfortunately we do lose volume from our lips, but its not only volume we lose; the borders of the lips can also lose their definition leading to lipstick bleeding out from the edges of the lips giving an ageing effect. Fine lines also start to radiate out from the borders of our lips particularly if smoking has been a habit. However, dont despair! There are a lot of things that you can do with skin care and makeup to disguise all of this. I have shared with you my own exfoliating, moisturising and lip perfecting technique on our website. Visit the April newsletter page of our website at www.angelabartlett. co.uk to make your lips look younger and thinner without lip plumping products, surgery or injections.

Peckforton relaunch wa
PECKFORTON Castle welcomed musics hottest property, Emeli, Sand, to their glitzy relaunch party in February. Sand performed tracks for her number one album in front of a delighted crowd of over 300 VIPs and special guests which included Coronation Streets Michelle Keegan, Brooke Vincent and Ryan Thomas and Desperate Scousewives Amanda Farrington and Jill and Debbie OToole. The night was a huge success with high-glamour befitting the dramatic fairytale setting. The event certainly celebrated the Castles relaunch and refurbishment in style. A glittering array of celebrity guests mingled with family, friends and special guests of the Naylor family and took the night as an opportunity to check out the venues new facilities. Brit award winner, Emeli Sand, was certainly amazed by the stunning venue, I dont think Ive performed in a Castle before when I saw it I couldnt believe how beautiful the setting was this is something else! she exclaimed. Managing Director and owner Chris Naylor is certainly pleased with the Castles refurbishment : The Castle has been restored and is looking better than ever, he said

New manager Michael Auld has been appointed as the new hotel manager. He joins the castle following a move from Tunbridge Wells, Kent where he worked as general manager at a large hotel chain. Last year he won the coveted Caterer & Hotelkeeper Acorn Award. Michael said: Peckforton Castle is unlike anywhere I have ever worked before. The surroundings are simply stunning and I cant wait to put my stamp on things.

was a star-studded affair

The events of 19th June have well and truly been put behind us and they are now just part of the history of this magnificent, magical place. Thursday night was a celebration that was certainly befitting of Peckforton Castle and everyone who attended could not be more complimentary; most were saying it was the best party they have ever been to! The whole event could not have been any better and ran more than smoothly from start to finish and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful team whose efforts were invaluable.

Double victory for peckforton

PECKFORTON Castle, is celebrating after a double victory at the national Meeting & Incentive Travel Industry Awards presented in London. The castle won silver awards for Best UK Hotel and Best UK Unusual Venue topping off a great start to the year for the team. Director of Sales, Matthew Naylor, was on hand to collect the award and hope it will encourage more local and national businesses to consider the venue for their conference needs. Our meetings and events side of the business is something we have worked hard to develop over the last 3 years and we are very proud of the improvements we have made particularly during the refurbishment following the fire. Our venue has the power to enthuse delegates and compound the messages businesses are trying send home. I really do encourage event organisers to come see the Castle for themselves and to see what we can offer your business.

Salon raffle cash for hospice

SKIN DEEP beauty salon, in Tarporley, raised 460 for St Lukes Hospice from the 21st birthday raffle in February. Hospice fundraising manager Jane Thompson said: The team as Skin Deep have always been incredibly supportive of the hospice finding lots of ways to help us raise funds to support our patients and their families. As well as raising money they have given us wonderful Clarins raffle prizes and goodie bags for our ladies events and these are always very popular and help us to raise even more money. The support of the community and local businesses is pivotal to us raising the 6,500 we need each day. For more information go to www.stlukes-hospice.co.uk

Year tinged with sadness

TARVIn Tennis Club held its annual AGM at the Vicars Cross Golf Club, attended by over 40 members and friends. Chairman Rob Millar welcomed everyone and summed up the activities of the year, overshadowed as it was by the untimely passing of the Clubs Ladies Captain, Carolyn Bunting. She would be very sadly missed both from the playing aspect as also from the contribution Carolyn made to the Club in general. Coaching, improved external appearance of the Club, membership numbers holding up despite a need to recruit new and younger members, support for village activities, ideas for future development - all were covered by Rob in his address. Left: Ladies Singles winner Judi Jennings receives her trophy Below, right: Mens Doubles winners Chris Lowe and Peter nosworthy Below, left: Jane Wilson who was twice the losing finalist but won the overall American Tournament trophy.

Ladies Doubles winners Andrea Gray and Jane Mitchell

Mens Singles winner Peter nosworthy Treasurer Allyson Clarkson then gave a detailed written and verbal report on the Clubs healthy financial situation but added a note of caution about the affordability of installing floodlights, an idea mooted by some members. Mens Captain Keith Barker reported on the Clubs playing success during the year in the Cheshire Shield competition, the summer and winter leagues in each of which the club fields five teams, the in-club Senior and Junior competitions and the four American Tournaments, the last of which took place on New Year Bank Holiday Monday in memory of Carolyn. The new 12-strong committee was elected, and after paying a further fulsome and personal tribute to Carolyn Bunting, the President, Barry Cooper, presented the cups and trophies to the Clubs various tournament winners. The evening concluded with a splendid buffet meal and a challenging back-to-school quiz.

Mixed Doubles winners Barry Cooper and Wendy Rae with Chairman Rob Millar on the right.
Tarvin Tennis Club will be getting the summer season started with its traditional Open Week when potential new members are invited to meet existing players and try the clubs facilities for free. The sessions will be on Tuesday, 17th April at 6 pm, Friday, 20th at 6pm and Saturday, 21st at 2pm. There will be a chance to enjoy some free coaching for rusty racket holders and for any beginners who would like to try the game - rackets and balls provided. Junior coaching has already started on Mondays, from 5pm. See our website www.tarvintennisclub.co.uk for more details

l A group of 30 GCSE History students attended a screening of The Artist in Manchester. Students enjoyed the recreation of Hollywood on the verge of sound in the 1920s. The silent, black and white movie, gave students further insight into life in America in the 1920s and 30s, highlighting the social and economic impact of the Wall Street Crash, which support one of their GCSE exams which they will sit at the end of the year.

FOOTBALL TALK... TARPORLEY VICS FC

VICS FACE A BIG STRUGGLE TO RETAIN THEIR DIVISION ONE STATUS

TARPORLEY Vics First Team continue to struggle in Division One of the Cheshire League and are now 14 points from the third from bottom position that will guarantee Division One status next year. Knutsford FC continues to set the pace in the League, with Padgate St Oswalds FC hot on their heels. The only game played recently was a 6-2 reversal against Gamesly FC with the game only decided in the last eight minutes. Steve Lloyd has again had more success as Coach of the Cheshire Leagues representative side as the Team, which included Vics players Nick Abson and Al Rowntree, defeated Lincolnshire County League side in the National League Cup Quarter Final. The Team are now looking forward to their trip to Jersey for the Semi Final with a place in the final at stake. Tarporley Vics Reserves lie in 7th position in the Crewe & District League. They have progressed in the Inter League cup after defeating High Lane 3-1, however they lost in the next game 2-1 to Mary Dendy FC, an interestingly named team from the East Cheshire League. In the remaining game played since the last report they defeated Curshaws FC 3-0 in the League For further information on matches, training or sponsorship opportunities please view our website tarporleyvics.co.uk. Email us at info@tarporleyvics.co.uk. You can also become a Facebook Friend of Tarporley Victoria FC

CLUB DREAM OF A RETURN TO TARPORLEy

TARPORLEY Vics are pleased to have been given the opportunity to discuss their views regarding Brook Farm School, Brook Road option land and the Master Plan being created by URS Ltd on the instruction of Cheshire West & Cheshire Council. Tarporley Vics have always held fast to the dream that they will return to the Village one day and it is our belief that this scheme potentially offers the chance for our dream to become reality. The field along Brook Road that forms part of the Option Land was once Home for Tarporley Vics before changing facilities were required! FA requirements have come a long way since the 1970s with reference to changing facilities and pitch requirements however residents who turned out for Tarporley Vics during this period do not remember games being called off on this field for poor underfoot conditions due to the good natural drainage on the piece of land in question. We look forward to further dialogue and presentations re this land before any decisions are made by the Community, and we hope the outcome of these discussions can deliver Tarporley Vics back into the heart of our Village where everyone involved with the Club think we belong.

APRIL DELIGHTS
gArdening by JAnet HeAtH
by now you should have plants growing as well as the weeds! if you have perennial weeds that are difficult to eradicate by digging up, spray them with a glyphosate weedkiller that is taken into the leaves and kills the plant including the root. be careful not to spray any on plants you wish to keep as it will kill them. glyphosate is good to get rid of perennial weeds such as dandilions, docks, ground elder and bindweed. Plant out seeds of lettuce and other salads and carrots outdoors towards the end of the month. Plants grown indoors such as tomatoes or courgettes can start to be hardened off by putting them outside when no frost is forecast. Give the lawn a spring feed and weed application. Applying this as a solution that is watered onto the grass with a watering can is effective, although the weeds look unsightly when they die off. Tulips and narcissus are in full flower now. You may find plants for sale if you missed buying bulbs last autumn. The ever reliable Allysum will brighten a sunny spot with yellow flowers and Aubretia will cascade over walls in April. Easy to grow and to keep them compact after flowering, give them a trim to ensure the plants remain bushy. Shrubs in flower in April include Amelanchier which has masses of white flowers in spring and foliage that colours red in autumn. Kerria has pom poms of yellow

flowers on upright stems and is easy to grow in sun or light shade. Magnolias are in flower in April so looks out for Magnolia Susan for purple flowers or the small Magnolia Stellata with star shaped flowers. The flowers can be damaged by frost so if you can site the plant out of the first rays of the morning sun, this will give them some protection. Another plant for a lightly shaded spot are the Acers. The smaller varieties such as Acer palmatum dissectum with delicate foliage, do not like early morning frost which will damage new leaves. They grow best in the lee of taller trees or a house which is slightly sheltered and on lighter soil which does not dry out.

Peckforton and Beeston WI Our March meeting commenced with the usual business and among other things we were informed that we have an open invitation to join Tilstone Fearnall WI at any of their meetings; members were also encouraged to help at the Cheshire Show and to put in an entry this year. We had two choices for our summer outing and after a vote it was decided to visit Plas Teg in Wales. We welcomed Father Michael Burgess who gave an extremely amusing talk about The Seven Deadly Sins, comparing how they are perceived in the present day as opposed to those of earlier times. Father Burgess has a brilliant sense of humour and a great ability to entertain his audience even whilst discussing a serious subject. Everyone in the hall thoroughly enjoyed listening to him and he provided many laughs to send us on our way. Tea and cakes rounded off the meeting and our next one will be at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 4th April at Peckforton Village Hall when Doug Haines will speak about The Impact of the Gentry on our historic County, do come and join us.
