Get The Most From Weight Training

Weight training is well-known as an important part of any fitness program. Benefits of pumping iron include elevated resting metabolism, maintenance of strength and lean muscle, and minimized risks of osteoporosis. While most people are diligent about performing weight training exercise, benefits often are not optimal for many reasons. by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S., Weight training should be done three times per week Fitness & Wellness Director and not on consecutive days. Rest days are critical for muscle recovery. Muscle recovery facilitates strength gains and minimizes risk for repetitive stress injuries such as tendonitis or muscle pulls/tears. Where many people fall short is continuously doing the same exercises. The body and muscles adapt to the stimulus of exercise. Once adaptation occurs, fitness and strength gains are minimal at best. To get more, different and better results, the stimulus needs to be changed. An example would be to switch from doing a shoulder press to doing a lateral raise. Both exercises work the shoulder muscles but provide a different challenge. Every muscle can be challenged in different ways. Periodically changing exercises for the same muscle is a great way to improve results. Another shortcoming in weight training is to perform the movements too quickly and, when on machines, allow weight to come to a complete stop (plates slamming) with each repetition. Each movement should be performed in a slow and controlled manner, approximately 3 seconds in each phase of the movement. Slower movement provides greater challenge to the muscles. When the weight is allowed to drop, the movement has been performed too quickly and the muscles are provided with a moment of recovery. For maximal results, 12 repetitions of the exercise should be performed prior to rest. Another way to provide best results from weight exercises is to ensure an adequate amount of challenge. Resistance used should be enough to require near maximal effort at ten to twelve repetitions of each exercise and performing two sets of each exercise. If the resistance is low enough that more than twelve repetitions can be completed, the challenge to the muscle is not enough to create any strength gain. Honest effort each time is critical for getting the best results. To achieve maximal results from strength training, frequently vary the exercises for each muscle, perform the movements slowly, and make sure the effort level is high enough to challenge muscles to near failure.
