A dystopian society is usually described with words like unliveable, stark, dreary.

Also, notions often associated with dystopias are widespread privations and lack of personal freedoms, as well as political oppression, or systematic discrimination based on sex, age or IQ. The Chrysalids is a perfect description of a dystopian novel as the plot of the story represents an overly cruel and stark religious government that does not stand deviations from the norm of any degree, hence bringing injustice to all the people who were born as a deviation. John Wyndham build a society that reflect on the aftermath of the nuclear war and all the physical remnants being destroyed leaving nothing but scraps of buildings. The nuclear war also results it he rise of deviation rate in Waknuk . These various issues in John Wyndham's society, have been commented on in the book, not to mention on the punishments for the result of a deviation , or having a relationship or contact with a deviation. In the book, the Chrysalids, the author tries to exaggerate the intensity of the aftermath of the nuclear war and tries to convince others that the nuclear war can be defied and also opposes issues of the nuclear war, an example is that the telepaths which are a result of the nuclear war, are forced to believe that they are at fault for being a deviation and hence have to face the punishments of being banished to the Fringes or being killed. The author comments on such issues and most of the time uses David's point of view, which opposes such ridiculous ideas of deviations leading the people away from the path to god. He also opposes the extravagant authority of the government by bringing in a group of telepaths that secretly communicate to each other to escape before they are caught as deviations. The authors keeps the reader in a vortex of doubt and awe at the courageous doings of these telepaths such as escaping in the middle of the night without an adult or person of authority to help them.

The author proves that determination and perseverance can even hide you from the eyes of the government . He also comments on the bravery of some people in the story which also reflects on real life people who also conveyed such qualities during the actual nuclear war. He also writes about the foolishness and blindness of the government in the birth of deviations, and how simply the government get fooled by the quotes from the repentances as well as the bible. In the true nuclear war, there was also many influences that caused the rise of the nuclear war , in the story, it is the repentances and the bible . The government in the story, was depicted by Wyndham, based on his actions and decisions to be extravagant against the simplest of offences, etc. which proves how easily our mind and emotions can be swayed. In reality, the nuclear war was too caused by dominant and powerful governments who wanted to save their pride and prestige, or wanted to show off their prowess. Hence, all in all, I agree with the statement that this dystopian novel comments on issues in John Wyndham's society and also reflects it to real life problems.
