It is finished. These are the last words spoken by Our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Three simple words that have been interpreted to mean many different things. Much has been researched into the meaning of these words. Some say Jesus is declaring victory over sin, judgment and condemnation. Others say that the meaning is that the wickedness of the Jews and their furious rage against Him is completed. Still, others believe that it is a statement on the end of His physical life for the purpose of providing us with our salvation, which is yet to come. But for me, I see these words as not only a statement but a command as well. It is Finished is Jesus exclamation that his physical existence on earth is over. An existence where he shared His life, the life of God, with everyone around him. And thus provided me with a template on how to live my life here on earth. This was done by his examples of love, forgiveness and services to those around him. His actions showed everyone that Gods love was present and active in their lives. Looking at his life, who would not want to live their life as he did? To show love, peace and respect to everyone he met. He comforted, showed compassion and healed those in pain. Jesus left plenty of examples and instructions on how to do this. From the Beatitudes to His parables, He has given me great examples of how to live my life righteously. For a number of years I have taught 5th grade religious education here at St. Francis. In my teaching I have also found different ways of being able to live my life so that I can be an example of Jesus to others. In a previous workbook there was noted an idea that if everyone were to do three types of interactions with other that this world would be a much better place. A place where we would be doing Gods will. These three interactions are: first, to place ones own needs aside and be of service to one another. Second, to show peace and love to one another. Finally, to forgive one another when we are wronged. I try and try to live my life in a manner where I can share the life of God with those around me. But as much as I try to move forward towards union with our Lord, I sometimes find that my path diverts. Sometimes slightly, other times shamefully. Do I show kindness

when I raise my voice to my children when they fail to do what I want them to do? When working with clients how much compassion do I show when I dont help them because it disrupts my schedule? Without knowing a person, do my judgments and thoughts on their character or appearance show them my value or respect of them as a person? This is the challenge for me, as well as for others. Where Jesus was fully present for the people around him, I sometimes find that I make myself the center, the focus, of my interactions with others. Even though I may be doing the right thing, my thought and heart may not be in it. Now, some of you who know me would think that I would not struggle with these types of issues. My wife, Kristine, says that I have natural gifts for service, understanding, and humbleness. This may be true. But you know that feeling you get when you know that you just havent put your best foot forward. That a job at hand has only been met with a minimum of effort. That is how I feel at times. I know that I can do better. I know that others deserve more. I know that I have failed. It is finished are not only the words that are uttered by Jesus at his physical death but also words that I will need to face upon my death. Sooner or later my physical existence on earth will also end and God will say of my life it is finished I do not know what awaits me at that time. So I carry my cross (just as you may carry yours) and acknowledge that I fail. I stumble and fall with my own disappointments and shortcomings. Through his forgiveness I shall try and try again to be the person he wants me to be. To be His servant and a servant to those around me Today we remember the passing of Jesus human life. His divine existence continues. I cannot see myself doing the divine acts that he did. But I will continue to try to do most of the human actions and examples that he showed.
