Mercantilism
Belief that trade makes richer. Get as much gold as you can. 

Navigation Acts 
Laws that England pass after 1660 to make sure merchant system was working. 3 goals, 
all goods going into and out of colonies must travel on English ships. Enumerated goods 
from colonies, must go to England before trading with rest of world (glass, tea, indigo, 
tobacco). Goods from Europe had to go through England before going to colonies.

Salutary Neglect – 1660 to end of French and Indian wart 1673, England doesn’t crack 
down on colonies.  Dominion of New England 1685, 
outlawed legislative essemblies,

down witch hunts. 
     The Aftermath: 
20 people ended up dieing. 
      Why? 
Teenagers making accusations, but adults pressing charges. Courts had testimonies. Fueds 
between families may have led to prosecutions.
Putnem family, males in this family were making charges were previously important. 
Mostly women who did not fit the traditional ladys were accused. Land disputes.

George Whitefield 
Beginnings of the age of enlightenment. rational form of Christianity.friends with 
founders of Methodist church. 1739, he leaves England and comes to colnies. Travels 
throughout preaching to who he can. focuses on sin nature. 
One of the best preachers. Even Ben Franklin swayed.

entered yale at age of 13. 1730s, minister of Connetecut. Sees 
something missing. Focuses on sinfulness of man. “Sinners in 
the hands of an angry god”. Becomes one of the biggest 
leaders of the Great Awakening. Becomes first president of 
Princeton University.
