Introduction
Channelingisanancientmetaphysicalscience.Althoughitenjoyedapeaklevelofacceptanceinthelate 1980sintheUnitedStates,ithasbeenaroundlongerthantheworditself.Afterthe1980s,channelingpractices lostsomeoftheirlusterafterafewpeoplewhochanneledmadepredictionsthatdidntcometrue,butnonethe less,channelingremainsavaluablesourceofinformationforthoseseekinganswerstothelargerquestionsinlife. Thewordchannelingisarecentinventioncomparedtothelengthoftimethatchannelinghasbeengoing onbyothernames.Inpreviouserasitwascalledmediumship(communicationwiththedeadordisembodied entities). The word channeling itself is not in most dictionaries. It is not a mainstream word, yet everyone in metaphysicalcircleshasheardthewordandhassomeideaofwhatitisabout.ThewordchannelinWebsters dictionary can give an idea of what the word means. A channel is a conduit through which anything flows or passes,anopenpassagethroughatubeorduct.Beingachannelforspiritmeansjustthat:allowingspirittoflow orpassthroughyouasifyouareanemptyvessel,ortube,throughwhichspiritcanflow. Beingachannelisanhonorforanyonewhodoesthisasapractice.Ihavedonemanychanneledsessions in my life and it was always an honor to be part of this process. I felt honored to be a person involved in the endeavortoassistothersintheirhealingandbeanopenvesselthroughwhichspiritcouldspeak.Beingachannel is a position of great service to humanity. I believe that becoming a channel is an integral part of anyones spiritual path. A person might not call it channeling, but that is often exactly what someone is doing when speaking truth to others. Everyone hashad that experience where it seems that some wiser being is saying the wordscomingthrough,andeachofushavefoundittobeapleasantsurprise.Evenmusicians,writersandartists havefeltthatflowthatseemstobecomingfromahighersourceratherthantheself.Itisasifbeingtouchedby grace,andthatgracetoucheseveryoneasitflowsout. Channeling is not limited to the spoken word. Channeling can also be applicable to spiritual healing. Manyhealersandspiritualpractitionershaveexperiencedtheirguidessendinghealingenergythroughtheminto the person they are working with on the massage table. Spiritual healing is an unacknowledged form of channeling,butitischannelinginthetruestsense. While science has yet to explore the phenomena of channeling in any great depth, some preliminary experiments have been done with measuring the brainwave activity during meditation itself. Using an EEG (electroencephalograph)machine,adefinitepatternofrhythmscanbedetectedwhenyogisandmysticsreached the deepest part of their meditations and altered states of consciousness were present. Channels, as well, have displayedthesesamepatternswhenmeasuredwithanEEGmachineattheCenterForAppliedIntuitioninSan Francisco(whichisarchivedbutnolongeractive).

WhatIsChanneling?
What is channeling and how does it work? This is a question that is hard to answer. Every time I am askedthisquestionIhaveahardtimeansweringit.Itisdifficulttodescribewhatitisliketobeachannel.Only directexperiencecangiveapersonatrueideaofwhatchannelingisandhowitworks.Itislikedescribingthe indescribable.BarbaraBrennansaysinherbookLightEmerging(1993),Itisnotthemetaphorofrealitythatyou usetodescribethisphenomenonthatisimportantbuttheusefulnessoftheinformationthatisgainedthrough altered states of consciousness. Im sure, as this phenomenon becomes more understood, we will find better metaphorswithwhichtodescribeit. SomethingsIcansay,however,isthatchannelingismuchlikeadeepsleepinwhichyouareawareof dreams,andyouaredescribingthemasthesedreamsgoby.Whensomeoneasksaquestion,visuals,emotions, thoughts, intuitive hits, wordsall sorts of information appear and come into awareness. Sometimes there is a delaywhiletheinformationisbeingcollectedontheinnerplanes.Whenthishappens,thereisnothingtodobut waitfortheinformationtoformulate.Then,oncethoughtsandideasarecompletedandtheinformationisin,itis uptothechanneltodispensetheinformation.Itismuchliketranslatingfromonelanguageintoanother.Itfeels asifsomeoneelseisspeaking,andthewordsflowquiteeffortlessly.Iamnotawareoftheprocessoftranslating, butsomehowmyvocabularyandknowledgeoflanguageisinvolvedintheactofdeliveringtheinformation. TwoTypesOfChanneling
Therearetwotypesofchanneling.Thefirsttypeofchannelingiscalledconsciouschanneling.Thesecond typeiscalledunconsciouschanneling.Inconsciouschanneling,thechannelremainsconsciousofeverythingthat issaidandreceivespictures,vibrations,feelings,images,concepts,anddirections.Aconsciouschannelmaintains aseparatelineofconsciousnessalongsidethatoftheguide.Aconsciouschannelcanalsokeeptabsontheguide andregulateinformationifitisneeded.Thedifficultywithconsciouschannelingisstayingoutofthewaywith thepersonality.Thereisaveryfinelinefortheconsciouschannelwhichisimportanttounderstand.Tobeatruly clearchannel,thepersonalitymuststayoutofthewayandnotregulateinformation.Thisisthedisadvantageof consciouschanneling.Thebeautyofconsciouschannelingisthatthechannelerspersonalityhasachancetobask in the divine light of the guides being channeled. This can be very enhancing to spiritual growth and a direct understandingofthemysteriesoftheuniverse.Atouroftheuniverseandhowitworksisoneofthebenefitsthat goes along with being a conscious channeler. The conscious channeler becomes wise beyond human understanding, and can become educated in the ways of spirit more quickly. It is healthy for the human personalitytoexperiencethevastnessandtruthofitsbeing. The second type of channeling is called unconscious channeling. This is where the channeler goes to sleepandthenwakesup,havingnorecollectionofwhatwassaidorwhattranspired.EdgarCaycewasafamous unconscious channeler. The beauty of being an unconscious channeler is that the personality cannot get in the wayoftheinformation.Theinformationcomesthroughunadulterated,unaltered,andexactlythewaytheguide wantstosayit.Theunconsciouschanneleristrulyinservicetotheguide,andthemessageremainsquiteclear. The disadvantage of being an unconscious channeler is that there is no recall of what was said, there is no educationaboutthemysteriesoftheuniverse,andthechannelermustreadatranscriptofwhatwassaid,orlisten toatape,sothatheorshecanalsobenefitfromtheteachings. Itisnotuncommonforbeginnerstobecomeunconsciouschannelers.However,astheirskillsgrowand their ability to maintain deep meditative states for prolonged periods of time while staying alert, they soon becomeconsciouschannelers.Iliketoencouragepeopletobecomeconsciouschannelers.Consciouschannelingis thefasterrouteforspiritualgrowthandunderstandingthenatureofreality.Consciouschannelingbringsgreat wisdomtothehumanmindandpersonality,moresothanunconsciouschanneling. TranceChanneling Many have heard the term trance channeling. It is interchangeable with the term channeling. This meansthatapersonisinatrancewhilechanneling.Atranceisnothingmorethanadeep,meditativestate.When you are in a trance, the book writes itself for you, music writes itself, art paints itself, and whatever you do is effortless.Effortlessnessistheessenceofbeingintrance.Thewaytoknowifyouareinatranceisthatyouwill suddenlyfeelasifyouhavebecomeverywise.Therewillbeashift,oraclickingofgearsinyourconsciousness. You will feel relaxed yet very alert. There will most likely be an absence of physical sensations, or physical sensationswillatleastbeveryvague.Youmightfeelatingleintheneck,thetopoftheforehead,orthespine. Youmightevenfeeltightnessaroundtheforeheadorcrownchakra.Therhythmandtoneofyourvoicemaybe different,andyouwillbeawareofexpansionand/orcontractionofconsciousness.Sometimes,aparticularentity willevenhaveanaccentordialectunlikeyourown. Sound changes frequency and I feel a slight pressure inside my head. As Hilarion enters, I clearlysenseanalteredspace.Whenthetransitioniscomplete,Ibecomelessawareofanysensations. PenneyPeircedescribeschanneling:WhenIenteranintuitivestate,Idiffusemypersonality.Ibecome softer and softer until I become very large. In that largeness I have access to a wealth of fine information that somehowconveysitselfbackthroughmymemorypatternstomyconsciousmindwhereImreadytograspit withwordsanddescribeit. The signal I use to know that I am in trance and ready for channeling is rather unusual. nothing but consciousness. This is when I know I am readyforchannelingand the connection has been made. Eachpersonwillhavetheirownuniquesignalthatwillletthemknowwhentheyarereadytochannel.Asyou practice with channeling you will find your own personal signal that lets you know when you have made the connectionandarereadytospeakasyourguide. HighLevelGuideOrLowLevelGuide?
Itisimportanttoworkwithonlyhighlevelguides.Thesewouldbebeingswhoarebenevolent,kind,and haveyourwellbeinginmind.Theyhaveadeepcaringforhumanity,andasinceredesiretoassisthumanityin raising its consciousness. The same way that you pick your human friends is the way that you will pick your spirit friends. You pick your human friends by how you feel around them. If you feel good around them, enriched,andjoyful,theybecomeyourfriends.Ifyoufeeltired,depressed,unhappy,orotherwisenegative,these peoplenormallydonotbecomeyourfriends.Thisishowyoucandeterminewhetheraguideisrightforyouor not.Theheartalwaysknowswhatisbest,andthemindisnottheonetotrustwhenpickingspiritfriends.Let youremotionalresponsetothesespiritguidesbeyourcriteriaforwhetherornottheyarehighlevelguidesor lowlevelguides. A person who lives a balanced and benevolent life philosophy will attract like energies. Remember that you are the one who has the body, you are the one who is on the physical plane, and no one can control you unless you let them, not even spiritual beings. There are many levels of spiritual entities who would like to work with people on the earth plane. Later in my experience it seemed that they were a group of 1,000 beings when I was able to hold more energy. Then there cameatimewhentheguidesthemselvesbecameillusionandtherewasonlytheexperienceofaveryvastempty space.Theynolongerhadimagesorforms.Theynolongerhadnames.Theybecamerawconsciousnessandthe vastnessofeternalself.Ikeptthenametheygavemejustforthesakeofhavinganamefortheenergy,butmy experience of channeling became quite different as my skills grew and time went on. Now I experience channelingasthepresenceofeternalselfratherthanindividualizedguides.Inolongerdifferentiateguidesfrom myself.Itseemsnowthatweareallpartofthesameseaofconsciousness.Eventhepersonaskingthequestions inachanneledsessionispartofthisvirtualseaofconsciousness.ThemoreIchanneled,themoreexpansivemy experience of channeling became. I realized that the idea of guides and spirits is a mental construct that was necessaryinthebeginning,butasIgrewmoreaware,theneedforthementalconstructwasnolongerneeded. Inthebeginning,however,Irecommendthatyoustartwithinvitingoneguide,orperhapsasmallgroup, for your first channelings. The later version of my experience with channeling would have burned my bodys circuits. Thiswassomething I needed to grow into rather thanstart with. You couldlikenit to a 110 volt wire holding220voltsofelectricity.A110voltwireisthekindofwirecomingoffyourtoaster,yourTV,oraregular household appliance. A 220 volt wire is the kind that powers your dryer, and carries twice the amount of electricitythana110voltwire. Thisishowitiswithchanneling.Youwillstartasa110voltwire,andthenlateryouwillgraduatetoa 220voltwireafteryouvehadsomepracticeandhavelearnedhowtocarrythismuchenergy.Itsimplywillnot workatthephysicallevelinthebeginning.Youcanhurtyourselfifyoutrytodotoomuchtoofast.Becominga 220 volt wire takes time and practice. Adjustments in the mental, emotional and physical bodies are necessary before you can carry 220 volts of spiritual energy. It takes much meditation and selfexamination to be able to carrythisamountofenergy.Therewillbeacertainamountofworkonopeningyourawarenesstoyourtrueself andbecomingwhoyoutrulyare.Sostartwith110andmoveto220asyouareable.Inthisera,youwillmoveto 220 quite quickly, for the nature of reality is changing at lightspeed! Lightworkers, including channelers and helperstohumanity,areingreatdemandandthereismuchassistanceontheinnerplanesinhelpingyoubecome amostefficientlightworkeronthisplaneofrealityasquicklyaspossible.

HowGuidesCommunicateWithYou
The way theguide communicates with you is verysimple. A guide has to step down its energy, while youstepupyourenergytomatch.Bothofyoumeetinthemiddlebetweenyourtworealities.Youliveinone ChannelingSkills2005UniversityOfMetaphysicalSciences 4

universe while the guide lives in another universe. Each of these universes and dimensions resonates at a differentfrequency.Tofindacommonfrequency,youandtheguidebothmakeadjustmentssothatatranslation ofideasandconceptscancomethroughintophysicalreality.Itismuchlikeeachofyouturningadialonaradio untilyoufindacommonfrequencyyoucanbothresonateatandcommunicatethrough. The guide often gives you a boost of energy when you first go into trance so that you can track the guidesmovementsandcommunications.Thewaytheguidecommunicateswithyouisthroughtelepathy.The guidesendsyoumessagesandyoureceivethemthroughyourowntelepathicabilities.Yourrightandleftbrain bothoperatesimultaneouslyinordertosynthesizetheinformation. MeetingYourGuide
Meeting your guide is an exquisite experience. You will be quite refreshed and thrilled after your first meeting.Youwillhavemuchtolookforwardtoforyouarebeginningawonderfuljourneyintoafriendshipwith anenlightenedbeing.ThefirstmeditationonyourCDinthiscoursewillassistyouinmeetingyourguideforthe firsttime,theoneyouwillbechanneling.Youmaybetemptedtosimplyjustsitinthelightofyourguide,rather thandoingmuchelse.Thisisfineifthisiswhatyouwouldliketodo.Itisgoodtolearnhowtoweartheenergy ofyourguideandgetcomfortablewithholdingthatmuchlightandlove.  Therewillbesometrialanderrorastheguidefiguresouthowtoconnecttoyouandyoufigureouthow toconnecttotheguide.Bepatientwiththisprocess.Yourtranslationmightnotbeaccurateatfirst,fortheguide willbefiguringouthowtotransmittoyouinawaythatyoucanreceiveinformation,andyouwillbefiguring outhowtoreceivetheinformationfromtheguide.Itisokayifthingsdontcomeoutrightatfirst.Youmustlearn towalkbeforeyoucanrun.Andofcourse,practicemakesperfect!Inashorttimethiswillbeeasyandeffortless foryou,andyouwillunderstandexactlyhowitworks. GuidesName Theguidesnamemayormaynotcomeinthebeginning.Itisallrightifyoudontreceivetheguides namerightaway.Thiswillbecomeevidentlater.Theguidesdontreallycarewhatyounamethem,fortheyare intheunderstandingofthemselvesashavingmanynamesandyetnoneatthesametime.Sometimestheygive youanamejustforthesakeofhavinganame,sincelanguagerequiresnamingthingsinordertoidentifythem. Sometimestheguidewillletyounamethemwhatevernameyoulike,onethatmakesyoufeelcomfortable. Ifaguidedoesgiveyouaname,sometimesthenamecomesinlettersatvarioustimes.Sometimesthe name simply pops into your head while you are doing ordinary tasks during the day. Sometimes you hear syllablesoneatatimeandlaterrealizethatthisistheguidesname.Sometimesthenametheygiveyouisone from a past life when you knew each other well. Some guides never give a name and remain anonymous, especiallyiftheyaretemporaryguideswhoactastrainingwheelsforamoreadvancedguidewhocomestoyou later.

ReadingForOthers
When you are reading for others, it is easiest to read for someone you dont know instead of reading for someone you do know. The reason for this is that the personality tends to get in the way and want to answer the questionforyourfriend.Itisnearlyimpossible,evenforanadvancedchanneler,tokeepthepersonalityoutoftheway whenchannelingforfriendsabouttheirpersonalissues.Thisdoesnotmeanthatafriendcannotbepresentandask youquestionsabouttheplanet,humanity,ortheworldingeneral.However,itmaybedifficulttohelpfriendswith theirrelationships,issueswithfamily,andothersuchtopicswhereyourpersonalitymightwanttogetmoreinvolved. It is important to read only for people who are receptive. At the age of 12, he was asked by an angel what he wanted most in life, and he said that he wanted morethananythingelsetohelpothersespeciallysickchildren.Followingthis,anunusualabilitydevelopedin which he was able to sleep with his schoolbooks under the pillow and assimilate word for word what was in them.Thisgifthelpedhiminschool,butgraduallyfaded. ThewayinwhichCaycesgiftdevelopedasanadultisinteresting.Whenhewas23,hewasearninggood money as a salesman to start his married life with his fiance of four years, and feeling confident. However, a mysteriouscaseoflaryngitisthatpersistedforalmostayear,despitemuchmedicalintervention,forcedhimto quithisjob.Cayceendedupinthefortunatepositionofaphotographicassistantaftermanymonthsofbeingable tobarelyspeakaboveawhisper,butlaterhecametohavehisownstudiothroughthisturnofevents. The episode with laryngitis actually pointed him in the direction of his lifes work, for it was through hypnoticsuggestion,recommendedasafinalresort,thatareadingforhimselfunexpectedlyoccurred,ultimately curingthevocalparalysis.ThehypnotistwasastudentofosteopathynamedAlLayne,andthesurprisethathe felt at the recommendations coming through loud and clear from Cayces vocal chords while he was in a self inducedtrancewassignificant.Caycesspeechwastotallyrestoredthroughwhathehimselfsuggested,andasa resultLaynewasmotivatedtoseekhelpforastomachconditionthatphysicianshadbeenunabletocure.Cayce was reluctant, only wishing to get on with his new trade in photography and settle down with a family. He neverthelessagreedtoreturnthefavor. Cayceonceagainputhimselftosleepandinanormalvoiceprescribedaregimenofherbaltreatments, diet and exercise for Laynes improvement, which was quite successful after only one week, and caused great excitement.ThiseventuallyledtoLaynesinsistencethatCaycehadagreatgiftandamoralobligationtoexplore its potential. After much soulsearching and prayer with his family, with whom he had remained close, Cayce agreedtosubmittomoreexperimentaltrancesundertheconditionsthatthisworkonlybehelpfultopeople,and thathistimewouldallowhimtodevelopasaphotographer,principally.Theyearwas1901. Whatfollowedshortlythereafterwasatrulyremarkablehealingthroughseveralreadings,whichalso includedosteopathicmanipulationscarriedoutbyLayneonafiveyearoldgirl.Caycehadcometofulfillthe desire he expressed to the angel so long agohelping sick children. It was hard for him to commit to an unorthodoxlifeofbeingresponsibleforinformationthatwasoutofhisconsciousknowledgebase.Yetitbecame harderforhimtoleaveitbehindafteritwasdiscoveredthathecouldgivedistancereadings. EventhoughhelovedphotographyandeventuallyopenedtheCayceArtStudioinHopkinsville,Cayce workedforatimewithamedicaldoctornamedWesleyKetchum,whohelpedhimbecomefamousbysubmitting research papers on him and using Cayces psychic talent in difficult cases. tuberculosisa very serious condition for those times. His fame spread and a Harvard researcher came to investigatehim,findinghimlegitimate. AftermovingtoSelma,Alabamainanattempttoliveanormallifeasaphotographer,Cayceonceagain pickedupnotorietywhenhecuredhissonHughLynnofpotentialblindness.(HughLynnhadbeenplayingwith flashpowder,whichburnedhiseyesquitebadly).Afterthatsuccess,therequestsforreadingspouredin,andhe gavethemwiththehelpofhiswife.However,sincepeoplefoundthatdoctorswereunwillingtocarryoutthe unorthodox treatments, Cayce had a dream of establishing a special hospital which could have fully qualified professionals to administer the treatments, which included herbs, spinal manipulations, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy,specialdiet,andcoloncleansing. Althoughheneverrefusedtogiveareadingforapersonunabletopay,Caycebegantotakedonations for his readings and started looking for backers to fulfill his hospital dream. He gave up photography, and by 1928hadmovedhisfamilyandnewsecretarytoVirginiaBeach,Virginia,wherethereadingsrecommendedthat the facility be opened. (Gladys Davis Turner was to remain with the family until Cayce died, recording the readingswithastenographandthentypingthem). Thanks to wealthy backers, Cayce was able to open his healing hospital and also The Atlantic UniversitybothofwhichhadtocloseinthemidstoftheDepressionin1931.ButtheAssociationforResearch and Enlightenment, Inc., known as the A.R.E., was founded at that time to disseminate and investigate the informationinthereadings,andstillexiststotodayinVirginiaBeach. Inthemeantime,Caycecontinuedtogivemoreandmorereadingsandwasinvestigatedbymanywho helpedspreadhisfame,somecomingwithskepticismandwalkingawaymarveling.Hisdeathin1945,followed closelybythedeathofGertrude,resultedfrompneumoniacontractedfromstressandoverworkashestruggled to keep up with the evergrowing tide of requests for help. Gladys Davis stayed with the A.R.E. as principal cataloguerofthevolumesofinformation,andthestudyanddisseminationofCaycesworkwascarriedonbyhis sonHughLynnuntilhisdeathin1982. Asforthemassivebodyofinformationitself:notonlydidthereadingsgivevaluableassessmentsofthe workingsofthebodyanditssystemsandhowtobalancetheconditionsmanifestingasillness,butwhatcameto be known as Life Readings were also given for people. These contained references to past lives and karma, whichwasextremelycontroversialforthatdayinaChristiandominatedculture.Aswell,historicalviewsthat meritedfurtherinvestigationsbyresearchersonthehistoryofmanandtheexistenceofthelegendarycontinents ofAtlantisandLemuriaastoundedmany.AsJeffreyFurstnotesinEdgarCaycesStoryOfJesus(1968)thematerial dealingwiththesethingsweredecidedlyalientotheawakenedCaycesmannerofthinking.Nevertheless,the LifeReadingswerepursuedfrom1923onwardandcompriseamajorportionofthematerialintheCaycefiles. Intermsofspiritualgrowth,Cayceschanneledmessagesalwayspointedtowardstheimportanceofthe individual turning to within for Divine Guidance, and being of service to their fellow beings. He outlined proceduresformeditationandselfinquiryinhisreadingsthatwereputintoacollectioncalledSearchforGodI and II. These are used today by A.R.E. affiliated meditation groups all over the world, which use these source books along with workbooks which have been created more recently. Harmon Bro, Ph.D., who was present at more than 500 readings, wrote of this phenomenon in his book Edgar Cayce On Dreams (1968) that [Cayce] insistedthatwhatpeoplesawin[hiswork]wasnotauniqueprinciple,thoughitmightbestriking.Theywere seeingtheoperationoflaws,quitenaturallaws.Theywereseeinglawsthattheythemselvescouldlearntouse. What could be described as the source of Edgar Cayces channeled material? It is apparent that a self induced,fullblownhypnotictrancewasoccurring,withresultantspecialbody/ethericconditions.Forexample,a readingstoppedabruptlyandhehadtobecalledbackintowakingconsciousnesswhenanotewaspassedover CaycespronebodytoGertrude.Readingsexplainedthatthesourceofinformationforasubjectcamefromtheir subconscious,incombinationwithCaycesdirectaccesstothesuperconscious,thestateofunlimitedawareness availabletoallofusasspirituallyevolvingsouls.AsHerbertPuryeardescribedtheprocessinTheEdgarCayce Primer(1982)thesubconsciousmayeitherdistortorenhancemansaccesstothedivinewithinforachannel tobeconsistentlyaccurateorhelpful,then,onemustbeabletotapthesuperconsciousonaregularbasis.And thisEdgarCaycedidwithremarkablefrequencyandaccuracy. Thereadingsdelineatedspecificwaystoattunethephysicalandmentalaspectsourpersonalexistenceto the spiritual, including the study of our dreams. Daily meditation was advised to help us put aside our limitationsandmovethroughthevastareaoftheunconscioustowardsourDivinetruththroughthisprocessof attunement.Affirmationsweregiveninthisregard,themostfamousonebeingknowntodayastheonewhichis giventobeginningstudentsintheSearchforGodStudyGroup,Bestill,andknowthatIamGod.
