A person who gives counsel or advice is defined as a counselor. Now, what makes a good counselor?

In Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet, the character: Friar Lawrence is described as a counselor, when he gives advice to Romeo to get secretly married, advices for him to run to Mantua and encourages Juliet to drink the poison. Friar Lawrence may have not though all this would lead to a tragedy, but at the moment he counsels them both. In Act two, suddenly, when Romeo goes to the friar for some words of advice on his love for Juliet and how he wants to marry her. Friar Lawrence gives him some advice on how Romeo should slow down about everything. The friar does agree on marrying them both for one reason: to stop the fight between the Montagues and Capulets. In (II.3.65-78) Friar Lawrence says: Holy Saint Francis! What change is here! Is Rosaline, that thou didst love so dear, so soon forsaken? Young mens love then lies not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes. Jesu Maria! What a deal of brine Hath washed thy sallow cheeks for Rosaline! How much salt water thrown away in waste, Toseason love, that of it dotn not taste! The sun not yet thy sighs from heaven clears, Thy old groans ring yet in mine ancient ears. Lo, here upon thy cheek the stain doth sit Of an old tear that is not washed off yet. If eer thou wast thyself, and these woes thine thou and these woes were all for Rosaline. By this, Friar Lawrence is telling Romeo that he needs to slow down and think about what he really wants and if hes ready to take on whats going to happen next, but like a good counselor Friar Lawrence gives Romeo the talk Romeo needs for the future. Then in: (II.3.91-92), Friar Lawrence also says: For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households rancor to Purelove. In other words, Friar Lawrence says that this marriage might work, and turn Romeo and Juliets families hate into love. Once again, his wise words turn into good ideas like a counselor. This affects Romeo by making a decision that will lead to no good later on, and is when the tragedy comes in. In progression, in Act 3, when Romeo kills Tybalt, after Tybalt accidentally kills Mercutio, Romeo is banished from Verona according to the prince. Friar Lawrence thinks fast when Romeo goes running in to his cell, not knowing what to do. The friar quickly thinks of a plan that will help Romeo, but the friar doesnt think of the consequences. In (III.3.108-159), Romeo listens to the friar in Friar Lawrences cell, he says this: Hold thy desperate hand. Art thou a man? Thy form cries out thou art; Thy tears are womanish; thy wild acts denote The unreasonable fury of a beast. Unseemly woman in a seeming man....) Friar Lawrence tells Romeo some words, so Romeo can finally realize reality, by telling Romeo he should act more like a man, and how hes misusing his man shape because of the whole situation. Then in: (III.3.148150) the friar explains: But look thou stay not till the watch be set, for then thou canst not pass Mantua, where thou shall live till we find time. He comes up with good advice like an advisor. Repeatedly, he says he will find Romeo some time in Mantua. This is good counseling to Romeo, because he needs it. Friar Lawrence has good intentions but bad decisions. Hes thinking too much of making Romeo happy then seeing the consequences.

In progression, at the end of this love story, Juliet is overwhelmed by everything that happened to Romeo and her. Since Friar Lawrence is her only help, she goes to him for comfort. If, rather than to marry County Paris, Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself, Then is it likely thou wilt undertake A thing like death to chide away this shame, and if thou darest, Ill give thee remedy. Friar Lawrence explains to Juliet that if she is desperate enough to kill herself, then shes capable of turning him down with his solution to her problem as well. This makes Juliet think of what she said. Obviously, Friar Lawrence knows what hes talking about here. Further along, the friar also states: Hold, then. Go home, be merry, give consent To marry Paris. Wednesday is tomorrow. Tomorrow night look that thou lie alone; Let not thy nurse lie with thee in thy chamber. Take thou this vital, being then in bed, and this distilled liquor drink thou off. (IV.1.89-94) Friar Lawrence now gives Juliet his plan that is sure to work. Juliet is nervous about this, but the friar tells her it will work and she shall be happy. Friar Lawrence helps Juliet in the way he possibly can. At the end, Friar Lawrence is defined as a good counselor in this tragic story, when he brings the idea up of marriage, makes Romeo go to Mantua for important reasons, and advices Juliet to drink the poison. Most people have a person in their life like Friar Lawrence, maybe its their parent or best friend. A counselor gives good advice but not the right decision for the situation because its what is better for you at the moment of the situation. In Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet , Friar Lawrence, who is a very good but not smart man, is a good advisor in this tragic story.
