First Reading: Isaiah 40:21-31

21Have

you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; 23who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing.
24Scarcely

are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. 25To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. 26Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing.
27Why

do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God? 28Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. 30Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; 31but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Hear the word of the Lord: Thanks be to God

Psalm 147:1-11 (said antiphonally) O praise the Lord, for it is good to sing praises to our God: and to praise him is joyful and right. 2 The Lord is rebuilding Jerusalem: he is gathering together the scattered outcasts of Israel. 3 He heals the broken in spirit: and binds up their wounds. 4 He counts the number of the stars: and calls them all by name. 5 Great is our Lord, and great is his power: there is no measuring his understanding. 6 The Lord restores the humble: but he brings down the wicked to the dust. 7 O sing to the Lord a song of thanksgiving: sing praises to our God upon the harp. 8 He covers the heavens with cloud, and prepares rain for the earth: and makes the grass to sprout upon the mountains. 9 He gives the cattle their food: and feeds the young ravens that call to him. 10 He takes no pleasure in the strength of a horse: nor does he delight in anyones legs, 11 But the Lords delight is in those that fear him: who wait in hope for his mercy.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:16-23 16 If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe betide me if I do not proclaim the gospel! 17For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. 18What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel.

For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. 20To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. 21To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from Gods law but am under Christs law) so that I might win those outside the law. 22To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that I might by any means save some. 23I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings.

Hear the word of the Lord: Thanks be to God The Gospel: Mark 1:29-39 The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark chapter one, beginning at the twenty-ninth verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30Now Simons mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. 31He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. 32 That evening, at sunset, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. 33And the whole city was gathered around the door. 34And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
29

In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. 36And Simon and his companions hunted for him. 37When they found him, they said to him, Everyone is searching for you. 38He answered, Let us go on to the neighbouring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do. 39And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. For the Gospel of the Lord: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Notices
Rosters at Christ Church: If you would like to join our band of volunteers on one of our rosters (morning tea, readers, sides persons, dusting and vacuuming), please contact Catherine Farrell (5787 1818 after hours). Helpers are always needed on all rosters, particularly the vacuuming and dusting. Name Badges: With many lovely newcomers to our churches, please try and remember to wear your name badges at the Sunday services. This makes it so much easier for our new people and visitors to learn and remember our names. If you have lost your name badge or would like a spare one to keep at home, please contact Caroline. Cursillo Ultreya: Sat. Feb 11th at Shepparton, 11am. All Cursillistas are very welcome. Lenten Studies: This year it is a very good study on the 5th Mark of Mission for the Anglican Communion which is caring for Gods Creation. Please give names to Trevor if you are interested. We will be running studies in a number of centres. Congratulations: to Katerina and Robert McKellar married in Christ Church yesterday. Op shop Meeting: There will be a special night of discussion and ideas on how the parish might be able to enhance the ministry and earnings of the Op-Shop, and turn it into a ministry of all the people of the parish. It will be in Church House on Tuesday the 14th Feb. 7.30pm. Fr Peter Tinney and Fiona will be speaking on their very successful transformation of the Yea parish Op-Shop, and they will be accompanied by a couple of the volunteers. This is a vital ministry in this parish; it is a vital contributor to the financial security of the parish; it has been faithfully operated by a few very committed volunteers for many years who have made a significant contribution to our community and to the parish, and it is suffering from the miss-use and dumping of rubbish, from theft, and from the fact that the parish has been unable to control access to the site of Church House. All are welcome, especially current Op-Shop volunteers, all Parish Councillors, and every parishioner who has an interest in Gods mission in this district through this parish and the

ministry of the Op-Shop should come along to contribute ideas, innovation, and perhaps, revelation to the future of the Op-Shop and its place in the life of the parish. Please consider, and meditate on the words of Jed Bartlett: Decisions are made by those who turn up! Retiring Collection: Our Mission Retiring Collection over the coming months will be for the famine on the Horn of Africa through AngliCORD. Children, pregnant women and the elderly are amongst those hardest hit in the burgeoning humanitarian crisis caused the worst drought in sixty years in the Horn of Africa. Please give generously. AGM for 2012:Sunday 4th March.Annual Reports need to be in NOW. The preferred (by far) method for submission is by email direct to Caroline Burgeemail@carolineburge.comor to the Rectortssmith@dragnet.com.au Reports still to come in: Rector (hmmm!), Tallarook, Pyalong, Op Shop, Flamingoes, Treasurer's, Wild Poppies, Building and Maintenance Committee. Pew Reflections for the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany Sunday 5 February 2012

Hospitality is of utmost importance in the Middle East and a host will go out of his or her way to entertain and provide for a guest. The last thing a host wants is to have to provide hospitality while being sick. Jesus arrived at Simon and Andrews home and Simons mother-in-law was unable to provide hospitality because she was sick. Rather than demanding that the woman provide hospitality, Jesus went out of his way to provide for his host: he healed her and the many who gathered at her door. We are reminded that Jesus always cares for everyone and that those who hope in the Lord shall renew their strength (Isa 40.31a). Pray for those who are sick and in need of any kind of healing. Give thanks for the work of the Church as it fights HIV and the stigma attached to it.
