The Egyptian Society for Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Geriatric Medicine, 11th Annual Congress ECOO 2012 Apr

26th 28th, 2012 Fairmont Nile City Hotel Cairo, Egypt.

Osteoporosis
In 1994 the late Prof. Pierre Delmas became the first President of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) which marked a breakthrough and a landmark in both early diagnosis of osteoporosis & an influx of new therapeutic agents for treating such a disease. An estimated 9 million new Osteoporosis related fractures occurred worldwide in the year 2000 & it is expected that these figures will increase tremendously by the year 2050.The whole idea of treating Osteoporosis is to prevent the first fracture from happening as fractures are a major cause of Mortality & morbidity especially among old aged people.

Osteoarthritis
is one of the most prevalent and disabling chronic conditions affecting older adults and a significant public health problem among adults of working age. Worldwide, osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. The prevalence increases with age. The functional impairments secondary to osteoarthritis also occur more frequently in older adults. Pain and limitation of motion restrict the independence of older adults by impairing their performance of activities of daily living.

Orthogeriatrics care
Defined as specialist medical care of older patients with orthopedic disorders that is provided collaboratively by Orthopedic and geriatric services. This model has been shown to decrease length of stay, medical complications in hospital and mortality. Randomly controlled trials have shown that this model of care led to almost 50% decrease of major complications as delirium, pneumonia, DVT, pulmonary embolism, pressure ulcers, arrhythmias or myocardial infarction.
