THE EFFECT OF CRISIS ON UNIVERSITY OF JOS STUDENTS The issue of crisis in our country Nigeria has been a problem

for decades. There is gross loss of human lives and properties worth lots of money in each episodes of crisis. The consequences of each of this crisis are devastating to both the economic development and image of the country. Most recently the crisis in Jos has affected the country as a whole and especially students of University of Jos. The effects of this crisis on students are:

1. Psychological Effect: Crisis does not only leave physical scars but also mental scars on those affected. Repeated exposure to crisis in Jos is linked to poor academic performance among students, increased anxiety, emotional stress, and fear. The physiological effect is due to loss of loved ones, friends, classmates, and properties. Students staying off campus have loss their houses; valuable worth lots of money and most importantly their credentials where burn down to ashes Having properties deliberately damaged, students being threatened with weapons, killing of innocent students are some of the memories and images that will be stuck with students for a long time. There by causing psychological stress.

2. Insufficient Hostel Accommodation: The crisis in Jos has forced so many students staying off campus to move to the hostel. The hostel are very few to accommodate all students, a single room that was officially allocated to two students, are now been allocated to four or more. The issue of accommodation in Jos is now a serious problem for students. Some landlords have capitalized on this by exploiting students, self contain accommodation off campus goes for

80.000 Naira or more. A conducive and enabling environment will help to increase cognitive function and reduce psychological stress expressed by student

3. Insecurity: The government cannot guarantee the safety of anyone in Jos, this has made the government to impose curfew. A community prone to crisis makes everyone feels insecure. Insecurity has caused loss of freedom and has created fear among people. Sometime students abstain from lectures when there is rumor of violence in some part of Jos. 4. Altered School Programme/ Calendar: The crisis has cause alteration in school academic calendar, the school losses its achievement yearly, learning process is being altered on and off. Because of the crisis student spend more than the expected years in school. For instance four years course are being altered, so students spend 5 -6 years.

5. Economic Cost: After the crisis there is usually increase in prices of food items, causing students to spend more on food. Most companies have moved out of Jos has a result of the crisis. This has lead to increase in unemployment among young graduate from the University of Jos.

6. Social Effect: The crisis in Jos has affected social activities among students since most of the social facilities are in town. Most people dont go out for social function anymore.

Without any doubt the crisis in Jos is a critical issue that needs to be address by the

government and the people. The impact of crisis on student is so terrible and the mental anguish during and affect crisis should not be underestimated compared to more visible wounds inflicted on others.
