armatures except to inspectflywheel key and keyway on crankshaft and flywheel.Remove ignition armature mounting screws and lift offignition armature. Disconnect stop switch wire byusing a 5/32 " (3.9 mm) diameter pin punch to depressspring and retainer, Fig. 102. 5/32 (3.9 MM) DIA. PUNCHSTOPSWITCHWIRE Fig. 102 REMOVING STOP SWITCH WIRE Adjust Ignition Armature Air Gap Two styles of ignition armatures have been used. StyleI is the three leg style and Style II is the two leg style,Fig. 103. Fig. 103 TYPES OF IGNITION ARMATURES STYLE ISTYLE II 1.Ignition armature air gaps are found in TableNo. 8, page 25 for Styles I and II.2.With ignition armature away from flywheel as faras possible and one screw tightened, turn fly-wheel so magnets are away from ignition arma-ture.3.Place the proper thickness gauge between rim offlywheel and laminations of the ignition armature.4.While holding gauge, turn flywheel until magnetsare directly under laminations.5.Loosen the one screw holding ignition armatureand let magnets pull ignition armature downagainst flywheel.6.Tighten both mounting screws.7.Rotate flywheel until gauge is free, Fig. 104. Fig. 106 TYPICAL STOP SWITCH INSTALLATION Rotary Stop Switch Check 1.Remove blower housing from engine and discon-nect stop switch wire from switch.2.Using Tool #19357, Digital Multimeter, set meterto ohms ( ) and connect test leads to blowerhousing and to stop switch terminal, Fig. 107.3.With switch in OFF position there should becontinuity.4.Turn switch to ON position and there should beno continuity.5.Replace switch if there is no continuity in bothON and OFF positions or there is continuity inboth positions and check stop switch wire fordamage. Fig. 107 CHECKING ROTARY STOP SWITCH Toggle Switches Two styles of toggle switches have been used, singleterminal and multiple terminals. Single Terminal Toggle Switch Check 1.Disconnect stop switch wire from spade terminal.2.Using Tool #19357, Digital Multimeter, set meterto ohms ( ) and connect test leads to spadeterminal and to switch mounting surface. NOTE: Mounting surface must be free of paint, rust ordirt.3.With switch in OFF position there should becontinuity.4.Move switch to ON position. There should be nocontinuity, Fig. 108. Fig. 108 CHECKING TOGGLE STOP SWITCH Multiple Terminal Toggle Switch Check 1.Disconnect all wires from switch marking eachwire for correct reinstallation.2.Using Tool #19357, Digital Multimeter, set meterto ohms ( ) and connect test leads to eithercenter terminal and a terminal on either end ofswitch on the same side as the center terminal.

35 2 IGNITION (contd) Stationary, rotary, toggle, and key stop switches areused to meet various equipment needs, Fig. 105.3.If meter shows continuity move switch to otherposition and the reading should not show continu-ity, Fig. 109. Fig. 109 CHECKING MULTIPLE TERMINALSWITCH 4.Move tests lead from end terminal to other endterminal and repeat tests. Test results should bethe opposite of first tests, Fig. 109.5.Repeat tests for terminals on other side of switch. If there is continuity in both switch positions or nocontinuity in either switch position, replace switchand check stop switch wire for damage. Key Switches Three styles of key switches have been used, metalkey (with single terminal), metal key (with five or sixterminals), and plastic key. Metal Key Switch Check Single Terminal 1.Disconnect stop switch wire from spade terminal.Using Tool #19357, Digital Multimeter, set meterto ohms ( ) and connect test leads to spadeterminal and to switch mounting surface. NOTE: Surface must be free of paint, rust and dirt.2.With key in OFF position there should becontinuity. Fig. 110 CHECKING METAL KEY SWITCH Metal Key Switch Check Five or Six Terminals The five or six terminal key switch can be checked forcontinuity using Tool #19357 Digital Multimeter. With meter selector switch in position, and testleads attached to switch terminals, a low meter readingindicates continuity (complete circuit). An incompletecircuit (open circuit) will be displayed as OL.1.Insert red test lead into receptacle inmeter.2.Insert black test lead into receptacle inmeter.3.Rotate meter selector to position.4.Meter must indicate continuity between terminalswith keyswitch in position shown. See numbersequence of terminals shown in Fig. 111. NOTE:

On five terminal switches, continuity betweenterminals is the same as the six terminalswitch for each position. EXAMPLE: OFF 1+3 NOTE: Terminals 1, 3 and 6 are grounded to key-switch case. Meter must also indicate continu-ity between terminals and keyswitch case inOFF position. When testing RUN and START terminals, metershould show continuity between terminals, with keyswitch in position shown.
