CHriSToPHer SHriver 15 Many students around the College have taken to comparing our beautiful campus to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The similarities are staggering, with the architecture, events and Quidditch. With the opening of CHCs new social room the student body has yet another similarity. it was said best by sophomore Bryan Mottershead when he announced: Here we have the Gryffindor Common room! in the beginning, the room saw very little traffic, primarily because students werent sure if they were allowed inside. However, as time went on, the room began to fill in with more people, now making it one of the most popular places to be on campus between classes. During the Social rooms infancy, it suffered from a lack of attention, a strong scent of varnish, and an unrelenting bit of heat bellowing from the beautiful fireplace. With any newly remodeled room, one cant help but expect a few

Planga Keeps Students Abreast of Campus Events

TAylor eBeN 14 Social media is more popular than ever. it seems like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest are so much a part of our lives, leaving us to wonder what the next big thing will be. Because social media is so accessible and popular among the Generation y-ers, it only makes sense to introduce it in a collegiate settingmeet Planga, a virtual calendar that gives a birds-eye view map of the College and current events. it was initially brought to Chestnut Hills attention last semester after a series of Student Government Association [SGA] meetings. Krista Bailey Murphy, dean of student life, and emily Schademan, director of student activities, approached SGA with the idea of a virtual calendar and Planga was one of the options. We had a couple of meetings where we had tutorials of each calendar system, said Anna St. Hilaire, 12, executive vice president of SGA. We contacted the Ceo of Planga, Alex [Kates and] had him on speakerphone[...]. He was sharing with us how Planga works and the pros and cons of it. After talking about it we [SGA] decided that given how small our school is and how it operates Planga is the bestfitting [option] for our school. When a student signs up for it theyre auto-enrolled in three groups: the academic calendar, student activities, student government, said St. Hilaire, each student can choose to become a fan or member of any club theyre in on campus: sports teams, poetry club, drama club, history. every club has their own calendar which they can add their events to. its social media; students love social media, said emily Schademan, director of student activities. She hopes that Planga will have a positive effect on event attendance. St. Hilaire said, We have about 200 students signed up for Planga, which is great because we only started it two weeks ago. She hopes it will only increase in popularity as word spreads and people get the hang of it. you have the option of syncing those groups to your own personal calendars.

Honors Gala Brings School Together

Kerry oBrieN 14 Alpha lambda Delta hosted the first annual Chestnut Hill Honors Gala on Dec. 9, 2011. Students from every honors society on campus and an unlimited number of guests were invited to attend this gala, along with faculty and their guests. The Sugar loaf Chateau provided guests with a scholarly atmosphere to discuss many intellectual topics. The Chateau, located next door to Sugar loaf Hill dormitory, is an elegant building with rooms that allowed presenters such as Sister Carol Jean vale to give speeches with ample space, as well as places to sit or stand while socializing with other guests. The building had lighting which created an atmosphere of warmth and acceptance, making people more comfortable in their surroundings. This event was held in high regard and all who attended treated it as if it were an academic privilege, not a right. everyone that chose to attend either donated a childrens book or gave a five dollar donation as requested. The attendees also dressed in accordance with the invitation. it requested that the guests dress formally, meaning nothing revealing or inappropriate for an academic event where faculty would also be attending. Held from 7 until 11 in the evening, guests had four hours to engage in conversation with their friends, professors, or students. Chartwells, the caterers of the event, set up a soda bar where guests could get beverages. They also had appetizers of various kinds to snack on while discussing the conversation starters that were placed on each table. The discussions between people covered a wide range of topics such as the meaning of truth or what everyone thought about the occupy movement. it brought out the intelligence in all guests when they gathered around tables debating the topics and expressing their opinions. When asked about the evening, sophomore Trevor Phelps said, it was nice, lovely music and brilliant conversations to go with a wonderful night. For students and faculty this event allowed them to view and converse with each other in a more relaxed setting. There was no pressure of any kind for the students or professors. There was no concern that they would be graded by or have to grade the other person on what was said. While the conversation was academically centered, the

event being held off of main campus allowed it to adopt a social atmosphere. People were in a comfortable, familiar environment where friends and recognizable faces surrounded them. The event was organized to flow smoothly and be lively and entertaining, without sacrificing its academic basis. The Honors Gala was an event that all enjoyed. The general opinion was the event was organized well and many were amazed it had not occurred sooner. Due to the success of this event it has been said that it will become annual happening, making it possible for future honors society members to enjoy the same experience. The occurrence of this event is likely to become a welcomed Chestnut Hill College tradition in years to come.

Letter From the Criminal Justice Honor Society

CoNTriBuTeD By AlPHA PHi SiGMA While the educational potential of the media has never been greater, the quality of the information being transferred appears worse now than ever before. With the u.S. incarcerating more people per capita than any other country on the planet, perhaps there is no greater social issue than that of criminal justice policies, and at the core of those policies is the governments right to punish. The prevailing attitude of the general public when it comes to criminal justice seems to be lock em up and throw away the key. And, in the race for ratings, Tv shows such as law and order or CSi, NCiS and CourT Tv only pander to our primal desire for revenge and retribution. But how much does the average citizen really know about the critical role of punishment in American society? A governments right to punish emanates from enlightenment theorists who wrote of the importance of maintaining the social contract and making punishment useful by encouraging proportionality between offense and sanction. The right of a government to punish its people is the cornerstone to governmental authority. For the most part, modern punishment ideas fall along one of two ideologies: retribution or restoration. last week, the new criminal justice honor society members randomly surveyed students on campus to determine the depth of their knowledge regarding these critical social concepts. Six campus students were surveyed regarding what they thought restoration was, and of those, five responses included the term original. Both earla Joseph and Cristina Cavallo, SCPS, defined restoration as repairing something to its original state; while Christopher Finch and Joe Mullin, SUS, defined restoration as repairing something to its original order. restorative justice is defined as a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused or revealed by criminal behavior through a cooperative process that includes all stakeholders. in this case, stakeholders include not only the victim, but also the offender, the community and secondary (or indirect) victims as well. The ultimate goal of restorative justice is to allow for the transformation of relationships and people into more productive, positive members benefitting the general society. However, whether or not full restoration is possible is unclear given that most victims report having lifelong effects from their victimization. Alternatively, retribution focuses on the right of the government to punish in some cases severely, when social order is threatened by criminal action. Nicole Brown, SUS, defined retribution as punishing someone because it is the morally correct thing to do; whereas John reeth, SCPS, claimed that it was cause for vengeance. Greg Gornick, SCPS, defined retribution as the process of repayment for something owed; a theme seconded by Christopher Sodano, SuS when he said it is a way to pay back for a crime you committed. retributive (or corrective) justice is based in early legal concepts of lex talionis, and refers to the extent to which punishments are fair and just. Beccaria, writing during the enlightenment age, argued that punishment was necessary to achieve the goals of deterrence but only if those punishments were swift, certain

and proportional to the severity of the crime would they serve a useful purpose. Generally speaking, punishments are believed to be fair (and therefore, just) if they are based upon tangible criteria, such as the seriousness of the crime and the intent of the criminal. one is forced then to question why if current punishment models are working, high incarceration rates plague our correctional system, and ultimately burden society as it struggles to reintegrate those individuals upon their release. As the Chestnut Hill College community engages in an informed and serious dialogue about American administration of justice and its use of punishment, let us do so with information provided by the researchers and philosophers, not television and cable networks. The significance of these issues is not limited to the small or big screen; the impact is global as America struggles (with other nations) to find the optimal balance between a useful implementation of punishment, and inhumane practices.

Intern Diaries
Many students at the college are involved in exciting internships. The Intern Diaries is where students are invited to share their experiences. This issues diary entrant is Alexandria Vasey 12. i am currently a senior business administration major minoring in art history. This past fall semester i was privileged to have the opportunity to intern at the Stenton House Museum. Stenton House is part of the Germantown Historical Society (right down the street from this very school). i found out about the internship at Stenton through Suzanne Conway, my professor of art history. i was told that it was a small, nonprofit house-museum looking for student interns to do day-to-day activities involved in running the museum. i learned quickly that interning at Stenton would not be your typical internship. My office was a renovated green house and we had a company dog named logan (after James logan, the original owner of the Stenton House). One of the first projects I was assigned to was organizing and creating crafts for a program called History Hunters. This program allows local elementary schools to come to Stenton and other historical sites in Germantown and participate in activities and learn the history of the sites. i was involved in many programs, from running a booth at the reenactment of the Battle of Germantown where i got to experience my first battle reenactment, cannons and all, to running a craft table for children at a barn fundraiser that Stenton hosted in hopes of raising money to maintain its facilities. Also, i was a tour guide for our annual spooky tours where i got to dress up in a Halloween costume and guide people through our homemade haunted house. i feel like i learned so much from my experience at Stenton House. Being on both the preparation side and the hosting side of many events was a very beneficial experience. I learned just how much hard work goes into planning and organizing events. each event is planned out months in advance and you have to be sure that all the details are worked out perfectly. A lot of people are depending on the event going off without a hitch and it is your job to be sure that is exactly how it happens. i have always been fascinated with the idea of running my own museum and while interning at Stenton i got a small taste of what that would be like. one can never truly understand how much work goes into running a museum until they experience it firsthand. it was exciting to intern at Stenton House and this experience has further persuaded me that this is a career i would like to pursue in my future. i feel that this internship combined my love for art and art history with my love for business and organization. It was a truly fulfilling experience working at Stenton House; it has definitely molded me for a future in the working world. For any student toying with the idea of doing an internship in the future, i would say go for it. it is a wonderful opportunity and only good things can come from it.

AAAS brings a raisin in the sun to chc

MeGHAN Gerry 14 in the fall semester Mask and Foil presented the campus with our Town followed in the spring semester by APAs production of How to Succeed in Business. Now, Chestnut Hill is ready to present the campus with its third show of the year, A raisin in the Sun directed by senior, Allan-Michael Meads and sponsored by the African American Awareness Society. The plot focuses on an African American family, the youngers, living in Chicago between World War ii and the 1950s. in this short period of time, you will be presented with universal themes that almost every family has to deal with, Meads said, from money issues, to sibling rivalry, to wanting to achieve the American Dream. These themes and others are at the core of the play; theyre as valuable as gold. Hansberrys perfect blend of comedy and tragedy, combined makes the play relevant and readily accessible. Director, Allan Meads is a veteran of the stage but had a strong desire to carry the passion he has for acting into his new role of director. Meads knew he wanted a challenging play that the talented actors here at CHC could pull off. When i decided i wanted to direct last year, i knew that i wanted a play that exemplified characteristics of drama, Meads said. Theres no doubt the cast and crew will be able to deliver. When asked why he chose A raisin in the Sun in particular, Meads responded, saying he wanted a powerful show that he connected to on a personal level. Automatically, i remembered, lorraine Hansberrys A raisin in the Sun. it was a play that he read in high school and now he gets to bring what was once a mere homework assignment to life. However, past and present student directors will be the first to admit that putting on a show is the opposite of easy. Meads is no exception. He mentions that one of his biggest obstacles was working with people who had never acted before. Nevertheless, due to natural talent, a lot of hard work and practice, Meads is more than confident in the people he has casted. i have a strong group of actors who know their characters inside and out. So please, if youre not doing anything Feb. 24 and 25 at 8 p.m. or Sunday at 2 p.m. or 6 p.m. then come see A raisin in the Sun. And if you are doing something then move your schedule around because this is a must see show. Planga: A Student Service

Continued from Page 1
one of those 200 students who have already signed up is Nicole Heigl, 14. its an easy way to go to one place and see what is going on, she said. i love using it to organize all of my extracurricular activities and not forget what to do or where to go every day. Jessica veazey 13 has also taken a liking to the new calendar platform. veazey said, i like how you can go on Planga and see whats going on day-to-day on campus and which one of my friends are going. Alex Kates, a 2009 graduate of Cornell university in ithaca, N.y., got the idea for Planga during his time as an undergrad. We had 13,000 undergraduates and almost a thousand registered organizations at the school, he said. There was just a lot happening every single day, usually over one hundred events every day on campus that ranged from club meetings to sporting events to philanthropy things to arts and music. This predictably created a lot of difficulty and confusion for students. Willard Straight Hall [Student union] was the go-to place to find out what events were happening, but it wasnt done very effectively. The halls of this entire building would be lined with flyers and everything thats happening that week, Kates recounted. it was just so incredibly disorganized. like Chestnut Hill, Cornell would send out emails about events, but students would delete them if they werent relevant to them. Kates was the president of the Cornell economics Society and used flyers and social media, like Facebook, to publicize their events, which typically had great attendance. Following a particularly scarring panel discussion sponsored by the Cornell economics Society with highranking managing directors and vice presidents from Morgan Stanley (only two people showed up), Kates saw the importance of a system where students could see everything happening on campus and easily keep in touch with their groups. The naming process, according to Kates, is really nerdy. Because Planga exists on the Web we had to come up with something that had an available domain, he said. We ended up picking Planga because it had the root plan, which has to do with making plans and such, and i think thats why Planga was the one that really stuck for us. As for the -ga, Kates said it sounds cool. Kates and his team of three started working on the beginnings of Planga in early 2010 and went live at four schools for beta-testing this past fall. Plangas staff has since doubled, all of who are graduates of Cornell university, the Massachusetts institute of Technology [MiT], the university of Pennsylvania and Trinity College. A few MiT students also helped out, one of those students being Katess brother. He felt that at MiT the problem [with event organization] was just as big as it was at Cornell, Kates said. Thats why MiT was one of the beta test schools, because the need was so high there. When we first launched at our first few schools, we didnt actually go through the schools. After letting Planga run free, Kates and his team realized that launching with the schools approval made it much easier and faster for students and administration to adopt the online calendar system. Working with Alex [Kates] has been great, St. Hilaire said. Hes been such an awesome person to work with. He always wants to find out if we have problems. There were problems with our iT department and Planga, so a lot of people were trouble signing up, but Alex and his employees worked really hard to make it work as fast as possible. Being able to give my feedback is awesome. St. Hilaire noted. Planga has already made changes to the site based on recommendations from the students here. They want to make sure they can better Planga. To sign up, go to www.chc.planga.com. Interested in writing, photographing or layout? Is KPOP The Next Big Thing in Music?

JESSICA VEAZEY 13 With the Grammys at an end, I find myself thinking of a genre of music that is one of the best kept secrets in the world and is finally starting to be revealed. The face of this genre can be found on Twitter, Facebook and Youtube, if you simply look for it or know what it is. Its called Korean Pop (otherwise known as Kpop) and it is storming not only into the United States, but all over Europe and South America. Kpop is a happy marriage of electro and pop music with boy bands and girl groups as their children. In the past few years, these bands and groups have been making their way into the United States and into the hearts of many. In the top 2011 trending topics on twitter, Super Junior was number seven on the list. Super Junior is one of the many big named Korean Boy Bands which is owned by S.M. Entertainment. There are four major music industries that produce these groups, S.M. Entertainment, YG Entertainment, JYP Nation, and Leon Entertainment. These companies train artists in vocals, dance and composition for years before their official debut as stars in Korea. With gaining extreme popularity in South Korea, these companies have started to expand their artists around the world with world tours and collaborating with American artists such as Will.I.Am., Teddy Riley and Nick Cannon. Will.I.Am. is working with popular girl group 2ne1 from YG Entertainment on an American album and Teddy Riley has worked with Girls Generations latest hit The Boys. Girls Generation has recently even appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman and the Live Show With Kelly the first week of February. While watching the show Kelly and guest co-host Howie Mandel were fascinated at the amount of fans supporting the girls. February also was a great month for the Wonder Girls who released a movie on Teen Nick produced by Nick Cannon. The music itself is a whole new entertainment experience. Each music video has intense concepts and lyrically the songs are not simply just about sex, alcohol and money like most American songs. Alyssa Cherewaty 13, a fellow listener of kpop said, Its not overplayed on the radio so I cant get tired of it. Its catchy without profanity I cant say in front of my mother. The language barrier is something to get

over if you simply listen to the music and watch the extreme dancing that happens. If you look at the type of dancing these artists perform and sing such powerful vocals, you will be thoroughly impressed. The people who have discovered the world of Kpop can follow the news of new songs, concerts and gossip at popular website Allkpop.com and follow the Youtube videos released by each entertainment company. Bryan Mottershead 12 has recently just started listening to Kpop and loves it. All the artists are so talented and the songs are upbeat. Since it is in another language I can make up words, or look them up online. New fans and the die hards will line up days in advance if allowed by venues to see these artists. Artists such as The Wonder Girls, BEAST, 2ne1, JYJ, 2pm and coming soon Big Bang who has worked with Flo Rida, have all come to the United States to perform. Also, S.M. Entertainment sold out the Madison Square Garden in their recent entertainment concert S.M. Town. Dont hesitate to check out all the groups mentioned and explore other groups such as Miss A, SHINee, Infinite, UKISS, TVQX and MBLAQ. Get ready to embrace this new wave, because it is coming whether the United States is prepared or not.

Tyger, Tyger Features Mystery, Action and an Irish Romance

before and that want to murder you is a huge problem for Teagan Wyllston, the main heroine of Tyger Tyger. The first novel in the Goblin Wars series, Tyger Tyger, is authored by Kersten Hamilton, a writer of several childrens books who struck out into the young adult market with this novel. Kersten tells the reader of Teagan, a girl who likes to work with animals, including a very fitful Gorilla. However, when Teagans cousin Finn shows up out of nowhere Teagan is faced with difficulties, including the death of her mother, who is a fantasy children book author and writes mostly about goblins. When the goblins from her mothers stories become real, Teagan has no clue what is occurring and when they disappear after Finn leaves, she forgets about them. A year later, however, Finn has returned and the goblins soon follow. The adventure so begins as the Goblins kidnap Teagans father and a rescue mission into a land she knows nothing about starts. Tyger Tyger is a novel filled of mystery, action, a little romance, and is based off of several Irish legends, which all lead to an easily-readable novel. Hamilton does a wonderful job making her world come to life, allowing the reader to easily picture every step of the way on Teagans journey. With the success of Tyger Tyger, Kersten released the second of the Goblin War books titled In the Forest of the Night, last fall. So make sure to lock your windows and doors, turn out the lights when you pick up a copy of this novel or the goblins might just find you.

Grammys Remember Musicians Lost in 2011 and 2012

DAVID NEGRON 12 This years Grammys took a look back at last years artists and industry professionals that the music community lost in 2011. Here are just a few of the artists who will be greatly missed: Six-time Grammy award-winning singer Whitney Houston popularized her name with her powerful voice. Whitney was most notable for her rhythm and blues crossover style that appealed to the music community, and was made popular on the music charts. She later pursued acting while also becoming a business mogul in the music industry. Whitney Houstons became a music icon and eventually made her rise to international superstardom with her debut album Whitney Houston and lead single "I Will Always Love You," which became the best-selling single by a female artist in music history. Don Cornelius created Soul Train and hosted the show. It was the first television program for soul music, and as the shows writer, producer, and emcee, Cornelius played an important role in exposing stars like James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson to a wider audience. Cornelius was best known for the catchphrase: Im Don Cornelius, and as al-

ways in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul! Jimmy Castor is most famous to Hip-Hop fans for his hit single It's Just Begun which became a staple in break dancing circles in the 1980's and appeared in the 1983 film Flashdance. Etta James bridged the gap between R&B and rock & roll, with hits like "Dance with Me, Henry," "At Last," "Tell Mama," and "I'd Rather Go Blind." Etta Jamess song Something's Got a Hold on Me was sampled and made popular this year by Pop Artist Flo Rida in his song Good Feeling.

Anonymous

Anonymous has become one of the most influential and notorious hacker groups that has ever taken the national stage. This motley crew of hackers, online supporters, and Occupy protesters have come together to stop corporations from corrupting the United States government and attack those that would stand in their way from sharing their message to the world. Many people have not been able to pin point just how this cyber group got started, or what to make of them. They have become the ghosts of the internet. They have become Anonymous. Anonymous has recently made a name for themselves within the Occupy protests, being called by some as the air force of the movement. When violent confrontations occur between the Occupy protesters and the police, Anonymous steps in and hacks into police records and personal files of police officers. These records are then used to defame those police officers, sometimes resulting in their termination because of Anonymouss allegations. They have also used the power of youTube to promote Occupy protests all across the United States. in these highly dramatic, almost over the top videos, the speaker wears a Guy Fawkes mask and talks in a voice scrambler to hide their identity from the public, while the sounds of operatic music loom in the background, almost looks like a scene from V for Vendetta. These videos, though, have become highly successful, with some reaching millions of views on youTube

alone, and have been spreading their message like wild fire across the internet. Anonymous cyber-attacks have also become well known with many people throughout the U.S. They have hacked into government websites and other important figurehead internet sites because they have a reason for doing it. Anonymous hacked into the Justice department and other entertainment websites after the FBi cracked down on the leaders of MegaUpload, a piracy site that lets users download media content for free. Anonymous wanted to show the U.S. government and the rest of the country that S.O.P.A was wrong and that the internet should not be regulated, and I firmly believe in that. Some call them cyber terrorists, or misguided youths just trying to gain attention from the media, but i believe that this group has become an important whistleblower for the American people. They have become the truth in this seemingly unending lie that the U.S. government has been feeding us. Hows the food? As a student ambassador i am constantly asked this question. My reply is: its cafeteria food and not homemade food, but you can always find something to eat. i dont consider my response to be a lie since you can always find something, however, that choice may not be healthy or nutritious. The meat thats offered at meals is off limits to many students, myself included. it isnt trusted based on experiences of biting into undercooked, frozen, or bloody meat. The salad bar is not many peoples first choice even though its the healthiest option. it doesnt always look appetizing; the lettuce is sometimes brown or frozen along with some of the vegetables. The home-style, stir fry, and grill stations usually

complaints, can be heard throughout the cafeteria. in these conversations its mentioned how chartwells has the potential of providing us with good food, after all, we are a small school with only one cafeteria. We dont want anything fancy; plain grilled chicken is fine it doesnt have to have some fancy sauce over it. Simple is better; breakfast is a perfect example. chartwells provides the students with the basic breakfast food options making this meal the best and most delicious of the three. We want food that tastes good, fills us up, and thats not made with gallons of grease. We need to eat healthy; students would like to see more fruit during lunch and dinner, along with a variety of vegetables. Generally, we want less food cooked in grease. Sticking with basic dishes is more than okay with us.

From Sports: Q & A With Coach Katie Lee

Kelly McKAy 12 Q: How is this season going to be compared to last season? A: last season was not only a building year for us, but a breakout year. We defeated teams who we were not supposed to beat and went further than expected. We worked on basics over and over again. This year we are taking it further, introducing the girls to higher level lacrosse and expanding our knowledge of the game. Practices are intense and workouts are much harder. every girl has a role on the team and realizes what they need to do to take our team to the next level. Q: What are the teams strengths? A: Our strengths this season start in our midfield. With the new 2012 rule change for the draw (three midfielders instead of five), i believe the game will start to become more strategic. in order to win games, you need to have strong midfielders who will out battle and out last their opponents. endurance and wit are something all of our midfields possess and we are welcoming the change in the game. erica eaby, Kelly McKay, lindsay Alexander and Brianne Timony will lead our midfield this season. Each of them share the qualities needed to be successful as a whole. returning all but one starter this season, our attack looks solid, lead by juniors, christina Squillante and nicole covella. Squillante will fill a major role this season, as our voice in settled offense. She is our main feeder and will most likely hang out behind goal line extended, directing her teammates and working the crease, allowing for us to get a step up on our competition. We are looking for covella to have another stand out season; however, her role will shift towards more of the offensive mindset, allowing her to concentrate on what she does best. Q: What are your teams weaknesses? A: Our weakness comes in numbers. last season we found out the hard way, towards the end of the year we lost key players to injuries. This off season we concentrated on getting our bodies where they need to be: healthy and strong. defensively, we are young but we will come together if we work as a unit. communication is our main focus! Q: Who will be the toughest team in the conference to beat? A: Most people would probably say Georgian court [University] since they have been

such a force in our conference over the years, but i personally feel that Philly U [Philadelphia University] will have a strong team this season. Gc lost several starters to graduation which will hurt them. Philly U, is a work horse with a strong defense and almost all of their returners. What seed we will get is up to my girls and how well they work as a team when the game is on the line. last year we just missed making a playoff appearance but upset several teams ranked higher than us in overtime. Q: What are you looking forward to the most as a coach? individual break out seasons and team cohesion. Towards the end of last season, when injuries sidelined some key players, my girls started to step up their individual games. KarlaAne Klouda, Jenn delahanty, Kelly campbell, Kelsey Moran and Meg nadler are just a few of the girls i am looking forward to watching show what they are made of this season. Team cohesion is a vital component to winning games and going far. We are one family off the field and are starting to play that way on the field. When in clicks... watch out!

BRANDoN eDWARDS `13 It is mid-February and the Philadelphia 76ers fever is really starting to get contagious. With big wins against some of the better teams in the NBA including the Chicago Bulls, orlando Magic, Atlanta hawks and Los Angeles Lakers, the Sixers squad of young and talented players is gelling together and at just the right time. The youth mixed with experience has really worked well for the team this season but the biggest factor has been their incredible depth from the bench. The Sixers have seven players currently averaging in double digit scoring and three of them are off of the bench, a bench that has come to be known as the Night Shift. Three members of the Night Shift crew really standout and are contributing to their early success with a record of 20-9, keeping them on top of the Atlantic Division. Lou Williams is the Sixers most dynamic scorer and has become the go-to guy in the 4th quarter. With an average of

16 points a game, not only is he the Sixers leading scorer, but he is also a top candidate for the NBAs 6th Man of the Year Award which is given out to the best bench player in the NBA. Lou Will has played solid basketball all season but his best game so far came against the Lakers. he set a career high including 16 points in the 4th quarter, which helped the Sixers ice the Lakers and get the very tough win. Thaddeus Young is a reliable bench player who gives the Sixers that spark off the bench through his scoring, rebounding, and defense. he has gone up against some of the toughest players in the game and has guarded them well. he is one of the most confident players on the team and is never afraid to take a shot. Thads best game this season was against the Cleveland Cavaliers. he scored 20 points and added 6 rebounds for the win. evan Turner is a muchimproved second year player who comes straight off the bench and has career highs in scoring, rebounding, and

assists. he is peaking at the right time in his career and has really dedicated his offseason to becoming a better player. he is one of the young Sixer stars that will lead this team in the future and he will be rewarded for his great playing this season since he was invited to take part in the BBVA Rising Stars Sophomore-Rookie Challenge during All-Star Weekend. eT has had many good games this season but his best was versus the hawks. he scored 11 points, had 6 rebounds, and 5 assists, including key buckets that helped the Sixers pull out the win. With these three solid players contributing night after night, the Sixers have a great team. Under Coach Collins, they are having one of their better seasons in recent memory and are looking primed to get a top-five seed in the playoffs. If the dynamic and energetic play continues, the Sixers have a great shot to go far in the playoffs and perhaps even bring this city its first NBA Championship in almost twenty years.

The weather outside may not remind us all of the season but if you want a glimpse of winter, all you have to do is walk into Sorgenti Arena for one of the Mens Basketball games. The Griffins are in the midst of a great season that has shown immense success at home and solid conference play all year round. The student body is certainly as excited as the players because the Griffins are primed to make a playoff appearance, and possibly even receive a home playoff game to be played in front of what head Coach and Assistant Athletic Director Jesse Balcer calls, the best fans in the conference by far. The Griffins season was full of great moments as the team finished with a great overall record and conference record. With two games remaining, the Griffins were 17-10 and 10-5 in conference. Although playoff seeding has not been determined yet, the Griffins have at least locked up a spot in the postseason, which according to Balcer, is testament to how well they have played in the conference this season. Balcer pointed out two things specifically that have helped the Griffins become a top conference team: talent and belief in one another. he also added that they are more experienced and with experience comes confidence. Part of the reason the Mens team has been so successful this year is a result of the tenacity and determination they play with. They have pulled out several close games, including many one and two point victories. They dont know the meaning of the word giveup and according to Balcer they are extremely competitive. They play hard all of the time and they compete, Balcer said, adding that the confidence and experience they have has really helped this season in winning the close games. Another reason for this success is the job done by

the entire coaching staff to teach the players both on and off the courts. Balcer and his coaching staff have drilled some important lessons into their players but of all of these lessons, the most stressed is respect in the hallways, in the classroom, on the floor, according to Balcer. Perception is reality and if the guys are respectful, there is nothing negative people can say. Being respectful is the most important thing for players on the Mens Basketball team and Balcer is adamant that the guys not only respect their teammates but everyone else in the school community as well. The team is led by the scoring tandem of Dan Comas, who is 8th in the CACC in rebounds per game and 5th in FG percentage, and Mark DiRugeris Jr., who in addition to being the Griffins leading scorer, is also the CACCs second best three point shooter, having hit 46 percent of the shots he has taken from behind the arc. Although these two are the teams main scorers, Balcer said that it is the depth of the team that will be a key factor in the playoffs. We are the one team in the league with seven or eight guys that can have a big game and score 15-20 points, Balcer said and also pointed out that his team is one of the better defensive teams in the conference and that defense is going to carry you through the playoffs. When the playoffs start, the Griffins will be willing and ready for any team that they are matched up with. everybody in the league is very good, Balcer said, but there is no one team that we really fear. Balcer added that any team could beat his Griffins but at the same time, the Griffins can beat any of the other teams in the conference. For that reason, Balcer believes that no matter who ChC faces, they cannot look past the first game.

award. When asked about what role Daywalt needs to play this season in order for the team to achieve, Coach Spratt said, Jesse just needs to be the leader he has always been. We all know he has a ton of talent but with the amount of young kids in our program, Daywalt as well as Bob hopkins 13, the other captain, will play a huge role in their development. Alex Latchum 12 is also entering his final season and like Jesse, Alex is coming off an impressive junior campaign in which he gained all-conference honors for the second time in his career. Latchum and Daywalt will anchor the top part of the lineup again this season and they will be key in how far the Griffins go this season. The Griffins open up their season on Feb. 24 when they head down south to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where they will compete against three playoff-caliber teams. While they

Many additions to the offensive have also added depth and experience to the Griffins since transfers Craig owen 13, Mike Duddy 13 and D.J. Klusaritz 13 look to ignite an already explosive offense. Returning All-American players Mark Winkelspecht 13 and Michael Melnychenko 14 are prepared to lead the talented offense to a successful season. The Griffins are led by three coaches, including their charismatic and worldchampion head coach Brian Dougherty. Coach Doc has without a doubt proved that he is the worlds best lacrosse goal-tender and he brings his plethora of knowledge and experience to a young and eager Griffins squad. As many throughout the College know, one of the lacrosse teams own fell ill and was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. Shane Franzone cannot go without mention when talking about the Chestnut hill Mens Lacrosse team. After a successful bone marrow transplant, Shanes future looks bright even though he now fights a lung infection. As I step out under the lights, I am constantly reminded of how blessed I am to have 45 brothers with me who feel a love and passion for this game. As the upcoming season approaches mens lacrosse prepares each day and it is a blessing to play a game that changes lives. With spring and warm weather rapidly approaching, I urge the Chestnut hill community to come out and experience a lacrosse game. Remember that not all lacrosse players are what you would assume them to be. Some of us are musicians, businessmen, fathers, Canadians and some are just college students looking to enjoy the most influential and mind-opening four years of our lives. Do not be so quick to judge an athlete because of a reputation his or her sport carries and maybe we can all find something within others that is bright and new.

RYAN LANzALoTTo `13 entering the fifth year of the Colleges baseball program, there is no doubt that this year the team will qualify for the conference tournament. After two seasons defeated in the first round of playoffs, the Griffins are eager for another shot to prove themselves as a championship-worthy team. At the end of last year, a huge milestone for program history was its inaugural classs graduation. even though the team graduated nine players, head Coach Bob Spratt worked hard during off-season to find well-qualified high school seniors that fit the program to replace the talent that graduated. even though we lost a lot of key players, we feel very confident in players we brought in as well, Coach Spratt said, adding, the players that are returning will have to step up and be leaders on the team. entering his senior season, Jesse Daywalt 12 is coming off an impressive junior season, which earned him first team allconference honors as well as a listing as one of the nations top players in an early pre-season

The game of lacrosse encourages a love and passion for the game. Whether it is coaches, players, or fans, people participate in this great game with a level of respect and passion. It is a unique game created by Native Americans with a simple objective to score more goals than the other team, but the meaning goes beyond. The game is based on teamwork, leadership, character and many other characteristics one can hold true to their soul. For success to be obtained, a team must work together and foster leadership, hard work and discipline. As the upcoming season approaches for the Chestnut hill College Mens Lacrosse team, many will search for these characteristics within themselves and their brothers. As a team, mens lacrosse has added many new players to an already deep roster, boasting 46 student-athletes this year. Additions in the offensive, defensive and goal-tending positions have increased competitiveness for the upcoming season. As many within the lacrosse world know, ChC defeated two top-ranked teams last season, including the eventual Division II national champions. The team is looking forward to this years many trials of skill as they battle in the toughest conference in Division II. The Mens Lacrosse team has stated a mission of reaching the final four and contending for a National Championship this season. Playing as a team and winning together is the ultimate goal. To judge a teams character, one must look to the individuals that produce a team. Character is what drives the lacrosse players to step out onto the field every day and continue to work hard. The Griffins look to return a starting defensive squad that has gained much experience and chemistry over the past These previews were provided by players of the teams. are in South Carolina, the squad will take on nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University from New hampshire. The following week, the Griffins fly down to Florida where they will complete against many quality teams during spring break. Coach Spratt and the rest of his coaching staff are very excited about this season for many reasons. This is the first time in our program history where I dont foresee any offfield problems, Spratt said. This is the closest knit team Chestnut hill has ever had. In years past, we have had many players that have put themselves and their own well-being over the success of the program and this is just not the case this year. Come out and support the Griffins this season as they take on tough competition and open up a new chapter in Mens Baseball here at Chestnut hill College.

a few games that I know we would have won if she was on the field with us. As the season progressed, the women learned the importance of teamwork and how each individual had the potential to be recognized as a key player. The team ended their 2011 season with a 7-10 overall record and went 5-7 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, while another player, Lindsay Alexander, earned national rankings in three categories. Looking at the end of the season statistics, it is clear that the women figured out how to play as a team. eleven girls recorded goals, seven of them reaching double digits. So whats going to be different about t his season? The team lost only one senior and has added four freshmen and two sophomores to the roster, making a total of 21 girls. Megan Nadler 12 is one who is looking forward to her final season playing lacrosse.

Last year the womens lacrosse team had their share of highs and lows throughout their season. From winning three overtime games and scoring 27 goals against Post University, to losing 1-20 to Georgian Court University, and suffering a 15-goal deficit to Kutztown University, these women have been through it all. In the beginning of their 2011 season, one player stood out above the rest. Nicole Covella was the teams leading scorer and worked her way up to the #2 spot in Division II for goals per game. After suffering various concussions during the season, Covella was only able to play 12 out of 17 games. While Covella was out, her teammates took it upon themselves to prove that they could still win games without their star player. It was a struggle at first without Covella, said Bobbie Chukuntarod 13. There were

We are going to surprise the other teams in our conference by coming out strong and only losing one senior is a huge advantage compared to other teams in the conference, said Nadler. This is the second year the women will have Katie Lee as their head coach, and the year before Lee was the assistant coach. The women also have a new assistant coach this year, Nicole haines, a 2010 graduate of West Chester University who played attack in college. Both coaches are anticipating a successful season. When asked about the chances of the team making playoffs, Lee confidently responded, We will make playoffs this season. The womens lacrosse season will debut on Saturday, March 10 at 3 p.m. against Molloy College on Victory Field #1 at Plymouth Whitemarsh high School. Come out and support the Griffins as they begin their quest for the postseason!
