RCOG Basic Ultrasound Training Modules Guide for West Midlands Trainees October 2011

Theoretical Course The Theoretical Course is held annually in September/ October. All trainees should attend this before commencement of scan training. This can be booked with Diane Carter. Introductory Simulator Session Each trainee will be allocated an introductory session practical hands on Ultrasim session. This session gives basic instruction on machine usage, probe handling, image optimisation, orientation & biometry. Once the candidate has attended this session they should access practical training in their base unit. Simulator sessions can be booked with Diane Carter. Practical Training Practical training should be undertaken at the candidates base unit. The form the training takes will be individual to each unit. It is the responsibility of the candidate to contact their Local Ultrasound Educational Supervisor and arrange the training. To allow throughput of trainees the expectation is that the trainee should not take longer than 6 months from the simulator session to complete Module 1 & Module 2. As there is still a backlog this may not be attainable at this stage. The trainee should keep a log of all their training & scans performed. Assessment Assessment is competency based using a combination of RCOG Logbook (on RCOG website) & OSATs. The assessment needs to be undertaken by 2 independent assessors, one of which should hold be the RCOG Local Ultrasound Educational Supervisor. Assessment may need to be undertaken by assessors from neighbouring units. Three competent OSATs need to be completed as listed below. The OSAT consists of 2 pages: the OSAT and the Generic Ultrasound Skills Assessment. It is essential that both sheets are completed at every assessment. Module 1 OSAT Transabdominal ultrasound examination of early (8-12 week) pregnancy.

Module 2 OSATs Fetal measurement, lie & presentation, Liquor Assessment Placental Assessment. It is acceptable to complete all 3 individual OSATs on one patient. Completion Form The portfolio then needs to be signed off by the Local Ultrasound Educational Supervisor. A completion form is available on the RCOG website. Certification Once all the necessary assessments are passed the complete documentation should be sent to Diane Carter who will issue the appropriate certificates. The training database will be updated to reflect RCOG Requirement At the current time it is a requirement that Basic Modules 1&2 are satisfactorily completed by the end of ST5. Trainees will not be able to progress to ST6 until these are complete. Checklist Return the following documents to Di Carter for checking. If completed satisfactorily certificates of completion of training will be issued. 1. Approved Theoretical Course 2. 3 Competent OSATS for each aspect (as listed in curriculum) assessed by at least 2 assessors. One of which must be RCOG LUES
3. Generic Ultrasound Skills Assessment sheet attached to each OSAT

4. Sign off Completion of Training within 3 years of Theoretical Course
