Essay questions for History 1 Final Exam 1.

Analyze the nature of Philippine neocolonial relations with the United States. Give two (2) examples and discuss how these post problems for the Filipinos in the contemporary period. (10 pts) -Definition of neocolonialism -analysis of the neocolonial relations: -PH receives aids and other forms of help from US but with a condition (ex. Balikatan, and RH bill) -PH in its post-war years, depended with US. Presidents, needed the approval of US in order to win elections. -Examples and problem -one example, in the Post-war years of the country, US offered aid and money for the restoration and in return, it was agreed that Americans will have equal rights in exploiting our natural resources known as the Bell Trade Agreement. The other provisions of this Agreement is that the peso currency be pegged to the US dollar and that the US can import its good without paying import dues. Because of these agreement, our country experiences loss like no other. Its resources being exploited and money from it does not reach them, if so, just a small percentage of it. There is inequality in the distribution of wealth.Aside from the fact that only a small portion of the profit in our resources, only few politicians receive it in the form of bribes. This is as I see it, one of the reasons why our country is suffering of poverty. - another example is that after the Americans liberated us from the Spaniards, our loyalty was with them and we were blinded by the fact that they also had their agenda with our country. We thought of them as our savior which resulted in the situation where in the elections, a candidate who wants to win should first, get the approval of the US. This clearly shows that we are still INDIRECTLY controlled by the US. We are still its colony but now, they are controlling us indirectly. This is why we do not see a good progress in our economy because we are tied with the US. We are their source of resources and exploits. With this, we are not really SOVEREIGN as we believe because in the big picture, Juan dela Cruz is still a puppet of Joe. We still do not have our own freedom economically and in a global aspect. This is why everything would sum up to why the Filipino people is still poor. It is the reason why parents go abroad so that their family would survive. Filipinos suffer the effects of this rotten NEOCOLONIALISM which only few people benefit from it. When the Americans educated us and colonized us, they considered us as their burden.. but in the present situation, it seems that these Americans became our burden.
