APPROPRIATE PRESENTATION AND LAYOUT Use of professional format and layout which highlights most important information. The information needs to be presented in an appropriate order. Lists should start with the most recent dates and work backwards. Also think about your order of headings. It is important that education is on the first page and usually the first section of a resume after your contact details. Font size usually between 10-12 for body, 12-14 for headings. Adjust accordingly. Legible style: eg Arial, Times New Roman or any other style that is legible. Style needs to be consistent. All sections MUST be consistent in the use of font type, font size, spacing and bullet type, e.g. round, square, etc. Remember that you are presenting yourself as a professional. Rsum needs to be single spaced so that the use of space is maximised. In the toolbar, click on paragraph, select single spacing, ensure that the box labelled spacing before and after is set at 0. Indents should be aligned left. Make corrections by placing the cursor in the top left hand side of your toolbar and dragging the information across. Page breaks need to be placed appropriately and lists should not be split. You may have to re-format to achieve this. Your rsum needs to include headers and/or footers with page numbers and your name. Ensure that you include one for each page by going to insert in your toolbar and by selecting footer. This makes it easy for recruiters when printing out job applications. APPROPRIATE CONTENT Only essential information should be included (i.e. name, address, phone, mobile, appropriate e-mail address). These details usually look best if they are centered with your name larger than the rest of your details so that you project confidence in the product that you are marketing - YOU. Education requires adequate detail. Include your qualification (written as Bachelor of.), institute, major/minor, dates of duration, relevant subjects or a positive aspect of your results. It is not sufficient to only list your degree and the institution at which you are studying. Employment needs to contain adequate detail (i.e. position title, company, dates, 2-4 duties / responsibilities listed for recent jobs and achievements). Review and adjust accordingly. This section is very important and provides an opportunity to differentiate you from other candidates. Skills summary needs to include at least four skill sub-headings matched to the specific job advertisement and each skill needs at least two examples to prove your claims. Hint: Skills must be matched to the advertisement requirements. This is often the most difficult section to write. Review the materials on Blackboard and discuss this with your lecturer in consultation or CIC Clinic. You also need to include other significant information at least 1 heading (professional memberships, professional development, interests, awards, achievements, extra-curricular activities, volunteer work or community involvement). This is your chance to stand out amongst your competitors and this information should be relevant to the role for which you are applying. Referees need to be included. They need to be employment or academic in nature and you need to include their full name, position, company, contact details including a phone number and email address. It should be clear how you know them (past employer, lecturer, supervisor, etc.) Rsum is targeted to the requirements of the job advertisement , employer or recruiter. This includes tailoring a Career Objective, appropriate skill sub-headings, units undertaken, etc. Written expression: Use of professional tone and language. Avoid use of abbreviations, slang or clichs. Check grammar, including consistent use of tenses; spelling (UK spelling); sentences have not been copied from samples on Blackboard or other websites. If this symbol !!! has been circled you MUST attend an English Language Clinic (refer to CIC / English Language Clinic Hours on Unit Outline).
