The Program Rock to the Future is a free, afterschool music education and youth development program, open to Philadelphia

School District students between the ages 9-14. The program focuses on the incorporation of music education with academics to create success in school and in life by improving cognitive thinking, learning capacity, socialization skills, self-esteem, and creative thinking. Students will learn an instrument their choice of guitar, bass guitar, drums, vocals, or keyboards and will also receive homework help so they can achieve academic success. The program is free and students attend the program every day after school until 6p.m. at the Atonement Lutheran Church in Fishtown. The students work together to write new, original music and attend free educational and musical seminars and workshops. Our instructors and volunteers are dedicated to motivating students to be the best they can in school and on their chosen instrument. Our desire is to spread arts and music into lower-income Philadelphia students lives, who might otherwise never experience arts and music education. Students collaborate with each other across race, gender and age to write new and original music. The program relies on the donations and support of the community. The program is located at 1542 East Montgomery Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa. Frequently Asked Questions What does Rock to the Future offer? Jessica grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and began her music education at a very early age (playing violin, clarinet, saxophone, drums, and banjo). She has lived in Philadelphia for the past nine years, began working for Janney Montgomery Scott after college and volunteering for Girls Rock Philly and Big Brothers, Big Sisters. As a local musician (currently playing drums for Conversations with Enemies) and community advocate, Jessica realized the importance of community and a good education and saw the effects of the underfunded public schools on Philadelphia youth. From her own experience, Jessica also knew the positive effects that music education has on academic excellence. She decided to leave Janney Montgomery Scott to pursue her dream of spreading music education to underprivileged youth and created Rock to the Future. Testimonials I love the drums, the homework help and being able to play an instrument I have good experience now. Its really fun and a good environment. - 8th grader I just like being able to have help with my homework and learn an instrument. 6th grader I think its great. Its heaven sent. The program came at a time when I was at my lowest point, I didnt know how I was going to afford music lessons, my daughter was asking about it and I saw a sign and it was like hitting the lottery, it was great. (parent) This is the best thing that happened to us and the neighborhood. (parent) This was really a blessing because there wasnt anything in the neighborhood for children. (parent)
