Making sense of Medicare


Why is Medicare alone not always enough? What impact does healthcare reform have on Medicare? What is the donut hole? These and many other questions about Medicare will be addressed at a free Making Sense of Medicare presentation at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, at the Romulus Senior Center. The presenter will be Debbie Knill, Medicare specialist with Health Alliance Plan (HAP). Everyone is invited. There will be snacks, coffee and juice.

Motor City Casino trip


Romulus seniors are invited to visit the Motor City Casino on Tuesday, April 16. A bus leaves at 9 a.m. from the Romulus Senior Center, 36525 Bibbins. The cost is $10 per person. The casino provides $20 in credit upon arrival. Seating is limited. For more information, call (734) 9554120.

Bingo is played twice a week at the Senior Center and was highlight during a March lunch provided by the staff of Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano. Among the bingo players are Marie Butler, Marie Charles, Peggy Gladness and Barbara Underwood .

Free Tax Services


Free tax services will be offered through April 13 to senior citizens ages 60 and older, handicapped persons and low-income individuals. Services are provided by appointment only. No walk-ins will be accepted. Call (734) 9554120 to schedule an appointment.

BINGO!
Bingo is played at Noon Mondays and Wednesdays at the Romulus Senior Center. Everyone is invited. Sponsored Bingos Tender Care of Taylor will host Bingo on April 11. Pizza, pop and snacks will be provided. United Health Care will host Bingo on April 18. Pizza, pop and snacks will be provided The Visiting Nurse Association will call Bingo on April 25 and will provide pizza.

Romulus Community Gardens


Reservations are being accepted for spots in the Romulus Community Gardens on Bibbins Road, just west of the Romulus Senior Center and across from the Romulus Towers. Applications will be accepted through April 30 or until all 16 of the raised garden boxes are reserved. Applications are available at the Senior Center and in the Community Development Department at Romulus City Hall, 11111 Wayne Road. The 3-by-8-foot garden boxes are made possible by the Romulus Downtown Development Authority (DDA), Boy Scout Troop 872 and local volunteers. Planting will take place at 1 p.m. May 12 during the citys Clean Sweep event. Residents can choose the crops they want to plant. The application provides some recommendations. Gardeners must provide their own tools, soil preparation products and food for their crops. The Boy Scouts will assist with planting and watering, if needed. Household Hazardous Waste Day


If you have old paint, floor-care products, fertilizer, antifreeze, batteries or electronics around the house, you can dispose of them and other items in an environmentally safe way. A household hazardous waste collection is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, outside Romulus City Hall, 11111 Wayne Road. Citywide rummage sale days


The City of Romulus rummage sale days are May 17-20. The program encourages residents to hold garage sales or yard sales without the need to purchase a garage sale permit. Those holding sales must register in the City Clerks Office in City Hall by April 27 to be included in the list of addresses. The list will be available in the clerks office and will be listed in The Little Paper newspaper. The rain dates are May 31-June 3. Whispering Willow rummage sale


The residents of Whispering Willow Cooperative at 11100 Wayne Road will hold a rummage sale May 3-5.

Casino Day Trips


Sign up for casino trips at the Romulus Senior Center or call (734) 955-4120. Participants need either a passport, passport card or an enhanced drivers license. All trips must be paid in full upon booking. Cancellations must take place 28 days or more prior to trip for a refund or you can find a replacement. You must include your name, address and birth date to receive the casino incentive package. Trips are subject to change. GUN LAKE CASINO in Wayland, north of Kalamazoo, on April 10. $43 per person. SOARING EAGLE CASINO in Mount Pleasant on April 30. Six hours for $33 per person. Receive $25 in incentives. LITTLE RIVER CASINO AND HOTEL in Manistee on May 12. $132 per person. Visit the Little River Casino, enjoy dinner and receive $80 in incentives. FOUR WINDS CASINO on May 26. $47 per person. Receive $25 in casino incentives. NIAGARA FALLS OVERNIGHT on May 27. $139 per person. Spend the night at the beautiful hotel and receive $45 in incentives.

May 11: Bowling Fund-raiser
The eighth annual Nine-Pin No-Tap Bowling Tournament to support the Romulus Animal Shelter is Friday, May 11, at Romulus Lanes, 37452 Huron River Road. Admission is $25 and space is limited to 72 bowlers. The night includes womens and mens mystery games, snacks, cash prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m., with bowling starting at 7:30. May 12: Clean Sweep Day


The annual City of Romulus spring clean-up known as Clean Sweep Day is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to noon May 12. Volunteers may choose areas of the city to clean. Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Meet at the Romulus Senior Center, 36525 Bibbins, to receive supplies and coordinate cleaning areas. Bagels, donuts and coffee for volunteers will be sponsored by Waste Management. For more information, call (734) 955-4502.

May 14: MiCAFE presentation


A presentation on Michigans Coordinated Access to Food for the Elderly also known as MiCAFE is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, at the Romulus Senior Center. MiCAFE assists adults 60 and older to make ends meet by applying for help to pay their bills. The program gets older people of modest means money to buy food, money to cover medical expenses and money to pay bills. The Bridge Card, the Medicare Savings Program, utility assistance and in-home services are key services to aid older adults in covering their basic needs and live independently at home. Furlough Days and Holidays


The Senior Center will be closed Friday, April 6, for Good Friday and Friday, April 20, for a city furlough day.

Caregiver Support Group


A group for family caregivers meets from 10 a.m. to noon the fourth Wednesday of the month in the board room of the Romulus Senior Center, 36525 Bibbins.

Party Rooms for Rent


Remember the Romulus Senior Center for your next birthday party, baby shower, family reunion or wedding celebration. The beautiful banquet halls and facilities at the Senior Center are available for rent at very affordable rates. There are rooms that can hold up to 120 people and they are available any day of the week. Bring your own caterer or make arrangements to use the Senior Center kitchen. The Caregiver Support Group, provided by the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency, is for people who care for those with Alzheimers disease and dementia. Helpful information and assistance is provided. There is no charge. Those planning to attend for the first time are asked to calla and verify the date and time. Game Days and Exercise Class


Members of the Romulus Senior Center can play games or exercise throughout the week: Bingo is played at noon Mondays and Wednesdays. Bunco is played at noon Tuesdays. Pinochle is played during Wednesday Fun Days. Game Day is scheduled for noon Thursdays. A new stress-free chair exercise class has been added to the Friday schedule, starting at 9:30 a.m. To register call the center at (734) 955-4120.

Red Hatters
The sassy Red Hatters group will meet at noon Friday, April 13. Everyone is invited to join them for lots of fun.
