Toward the end of my 30-year policing career, I enrolled in the UW-Platteville MSCJ program. Having completed 23 years working as an officer and several as a lieutenant in administration, I appreciated the flexibility the online learning environment provides for students who work full time and have family obligations. I was fortunate to have classmates who were eager and passionate about learning and werent afraid to voice their opinions or share their real-world experiences. After graduating from the MSCJ program, I was asked to develop and teach two online courses for the BSCJ program. I will continue to teach and look forward to interacting and learning with each new class. Upon retiring from the police department in June 2007, I became an academic dean at a community college in Dubuque, Iowa, where I supervised both full-time and adjunct faculty. The future of distance learning looks very promising. There will always be students who need flexibility to complete a degree. Employers prefer people who have advanced degrees when they consider employees for internal advancement or promotions. Some professions require a particular degree even at the entry level. We are poised to address this growth potential and I am excited to join the dedicated staff that supports our students.

Important changes to financial aid
Federal Changes
Pell Grants Effective immediately and retroactively, students are only eligible for 12 full-time semesters for the grant. Awards may vary from semester to semester based on credits. Subsidized Federal Loans The six-month, interest-free grace period upon graduation is eliminated. Loans will accumulate interest starting at graduation. This change affects loans acquired between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2014. Subsidized Federal Loans Graduate Students After July 1, 2012, graduate students are no longer eligible for subsidized loans. For more information about federal financial aid, visit www. federalstudentaid.ed.gov/students. html.
UW-Platteville Changes
New grading scale can affect your financial aid The Financial Aid Office and the Distance Learning Center will monitor your grade point average (GPA) and its potential impact on your financial aid. You will be notified if your GPA is nearing academic probation status (below 2.0 for undergraduates/below 3.0 for graduate students). The +/- grading scale may affect your status as in the following example: A graduate student earns a B- in two 3-credit courses, earning a GPA of 2.7. This falls below the 3.0 requirement and the student will be placed on academic probation. If the student does not earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better after the next semester, financial aid will not be awarded based on lack of academic progress.

Pioneer Profile
A graduate of University of WisconsinPlatteville Online has won an international award for his work at Churchill Downs Incorporated. Chuck Millhollan, a 2003 graduate of the MSPM program, earned the 2011 Kerzner Award sponsored by the International Institute for Learning, Inc., (ILL) and administered by the Project Management Institute (PMI) the worlds leading project management member association. The award recognizes project management professionals who demonstrate superior performance, outstanding skills, and innovative project management techniques. I truly believe that project management creates a sustainable competitive advantage that results in world-class companies and diversified leaders, Chuck said. As director of program management at Churchill Downs, he created the Churchill Downs, Inc., Project Management Office, which has evolved into an Enterprise PMO responsible for leading projects and programs across all business units, including four Thoroughbred horseracing tracks, three casinos, two software development groups, and a bloodstock research group. Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, was the first in the horse racing industry to fold project management into its business model. Chuck developed and used the Enterprising Ticketing System to demonstrate the power of project management. The initiative allowed Churchill Downs to replace its dated ticketing system with one that allows it to prioritize and manage its ticket sales, admissions, and related marketing efforts. In addition to public recognition, Chuck will receive ILL training valued at $5,000 and a $3,000 contribution to the Kentuckiana PMI Chapter. Tom Jensen

AN EDUCATION
IT TAKES
to demonstrate and put all the things I learned online to practical use. It was not abstract, it was a reality. Through Olatundes long-term involvement with Action Missionaire Interafricane (AMI), a Christian missionary organization operating in West Africa, he was aware of the need for a high school facility in Farakala, a remote town in Southeast Mali. Guided by faith and a commitment to help others, Olatunde chose a capstone project that aligned with his passion in life: Christian charity work. It was really involved and I really enjoyed it because I was able to make a difference in line with what I love to do. Unlike most capstone projects, this one required fund-raising, and Olatundes graduation hinged on it. The fourmonth project required raising $30,000 in six weeks. By focusing on his circle of influence, he asked friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues for $100 partnership pledges, and raised $32,765 from 94 partners in seven countries exceeding his goal. The funds covered the costs of roofing, plastering, painting, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, and the procurement and installation of classroom furniture.

Lorlamen (Project Sponsor, Mali), A. Osinulu (Project Sponsor, Houston), and O. Olatona (Project Manager, Houston) 4. Dance by Elderly Women Group
Working from Houston, with core project team members based in Bamako and Farakala, Mali, Olatunde virtually managed challenges including distance (5,000 miles) and time (time zone five hours ahead), language (French) and communication issues, water supply shortages, malaria, and a lack of a nearby medical facility. Despite these challenges the project was successfully completed ahead of schedule and under budget. On March 9, 2011, Olatunde attended the commissioning ceremony in Farakala, where the school building was handed over to the project owner, AMI Mali. I was touched. The rich culture, resilient spirit, and focused drive of the Farakala people towards selfimprovement were exhibited at every opportunity, he said.
Assistant professor and capstone advisor, Scott Wright noted the high quality and charitable nature of the project and nominated Olatunde for the Project Management Institutes (PMI) prestigious Kerzner Award. What stood out for me was his management of change and his understanding and application of risk management to this project. Everything he did was top-rate, he said. As a student and project manager, he was proactive and committed to achieving the project vision and its objectives. These are keystones for successful projects. Olatunde was later selected as a finalist for the 2011 Kerzner Award. Just being in the top five is amazing when you consider the small size of his team and budget. The project managers who win this award typically work on very large projects with budgets and teams that dwarf the resources at Olatundes disposal. Even more impressive is that his project was outside his normal work in support of charity, Scott said. The capstone project underscored that a small effort can make a big difference. Olatunde plans to continue working on charitable projects. If everyone in the world would show a little bit more concern and focus on the needs of the less privileged, this world will be a far better place than anyone can ever imagine. Go out and find people to bless. There are a lot of things you can do. Go out and look and youll find life more richly rewarding. Denise LaBudda

Personal attention was just one reason why Scott Brown chose UW-Platteville Online for his bachelors degree in criminal justice. Power plant job leads to new career
Pioneer Profile
Some people know at an early age what they want to do when they grow up. Others, like Michelle Laucke, want to try everything and find their way through process of elimination. She changed her major every semester before earning a bachelors degree in social science and psychology. Ultimately, it took working at a power plant to find my niche, Michelle said. After working with a district attorneys office as a legal secretary and later as a victim witness specialist for 14 years, Michelle knew she needed a change and took a temporary job at the Weston Power Plant site near Wausau, Wisconsin. Wisconsin Public Service was in the process of building Weston 4, a state-ofthe-art power plant that uses clean coal technologies. Michelles position allowed her to focus on work shed never encountered before: meeting with vendors for everything from turbines to valves, a once-through boiler system, and even heating systems. I was enthralled with how things were put together and asked myself, Why didnt I know about this? When the temp job ended, Michelle was unemployed, but with a mission. Fifteen years out of college and a newcomer to online learning, Michelle enrolled in the engineering program in 2009. She approached it head-on, forgoing a social life to focus on school, work, and family. To strengthen her credentials, Michelle interned in Plover, Wisconsin, at Pointe Precision, a manufacturer of aerospace components. As a quality engineering intern, she immediately applied what she was learning from her courses and was hired full time as a production control specialist six months before graduation. She was recently promoted to master production planner. I pull all of my degree into this job. I absolutely love it, she said. It was like someone made this just for me. Its surreal in a way. With coursework behind her, Michelle has resumed social activities and has returned to the other career she loves: breeding and selling straight Egyptian Arabian horses for her business, Vudu Magic Arabians, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Internship provides real-life career preparation

When Alicia Paske decided to do a 320-hour internship as part of her BSCJ degree, she had no idea she would gain so much hands-on experience. Her first day with the Columbia County, Wisconsin, Sheriffs Office started with an autopsy and a death investigation. The following months were no less eventful, including ride alongs and numerous police stops involving armed robberies, traffic stops, domestic calls, and a river drowning. Columbia County did an excellent job of introducing me to everything for my career and giving me all of the different experiences, Alicia said. A native of Columbia County, she was already familiar with the jurisdiction: her father worked for the Portage Police Department for over 30 years before his retirement. His career impacted Alicias decision to pursue her bachelors degree in criminal justice. Alicia chose UW-Platteville because of its online program and the convenience it provided. Platteville was an excellent school. I had a very good experience, so Im very happy with the way it turned out with my internship and with my degree. Alicia made an impression on criminal justice instructors as well. Alicia was a standout, always putting forth maximum effort, and actually earned a perfect score in one of my classes, Gary Apperson said. Dan Avenarius, instructor and director of distance learning, taught Alicia in both of his courses. During the last six years, Ive had over 100 students. Some of the students you remember more easily than others. Alicia is one of those students because she was one of the most conscientious Ive ever had. Alicia graduated with honors in December, and at present, her goal is to work in Columbia County. She plans on attending the police academy so that she can work in the field. Cheryl Lange

Graduate receives Honorary Lifetime Pioneer Award
Pioneer Profile
Chances are youve heard the name Tom Gunderson before. A member of the Distance Education Alumni Advisory Board and recent recipient of the Dawn Drake Excellence in Distance Education Scholarship, Tom was recognized at his December graduation with the Honorary Lifetime Pioneer Award. The UW-Platteville Alumni Association recognizes outstanding graduates with the award and a lifetime membership to the Alumni Association. Nominees must show leadership in campus activities, community involvement, professional development, academic excellence, and the probability of future involvement in the Alumni Association. Our hope is that these graduates will go out into the workforce and promote UW-Platteville, attend alumni events, and stay involved, Alumni Director Kim Schmelz said. After leaving school to work full time, Tom returned 20 years later to complete his bachelors and masters degrees in criminal justice. Tom was always a dedicated and hard-working student throughout the MSCJ degree program, even with family and work obligations, said Cheryl Banachowski-Fuller, MSCJ director. Amy Nemmetz, former BSCJ program coordinator, agreed, Tom is truly a role model for his children, criminal justice students, law enforcement officers, and his community. Instead of finding reasons why he shouldnt finish his degree, Tom made a commitment to continue his education. Now an investigator for the Pierce County, Wisconsin, Sheriffs Office, Tom said, The award is motivation to keep in contact and a reminder to stay connected with the school and the program. In the future, he would like to teach at a technical college or university. Cheryl Lange
