INDUSTRY PROFILE INDIAN RAILWAYS: Indian Railways, with 62000 km of route are the worlds second largest railway system under a single management in the last four decades. Since independence the Indian Railways has played a vital role in the socio-economic development of the country as well as preserving its unity and integrity, by linking together the diverse regions through its vast network and also contributing to the countries defense preparedness. The Railways system continues to be the main lifeline of the country carrying the bulk of long distance passengers and goods traffic. As a result majority of routes have been carrying mixed traffic with an accent on the volume of the traffic moved rather than the attainment of the high speeds. INDIAN RAILWAYS set up at a glance: Indian Railways are the largest National undertaking of the Government of India Transportation of men and materials on an extensive scale is their business. Their capital assets are approximately Rs.6000 Cr. Railways set the face for Industrial Development, which depends on transportation. They also helped to balance the economy of the country and promote economic growth. In view of the above importance, a separate Railways Minister has been formed at the Central level. The Railway Board assists the Railway Ministry. The Railway body is a corporate body and is responsible to advice the Railway Minister on all major issues of policy and decision-making. The railway board consists of a chairman and six members in charge of different portfolios like Transportation Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical Staff and Finance. The senior most members are the chairman and also the ex-officio principal secretary to the Railway Ministry. The Technical Directors of various branches for carrying out technical functions.

A Director, Joint Director and Deputy Director will assist each member. Finance Commissioner is also responsible for the preparation of the Railway Budget and other budgetary reviews.

COMPANY PROFILE

INTEGRAL COACH FACTORY: The Integral Coach Factory was built in collaboration with M/s. SWISS car and Elevator Manufacturing Corporation Ltd., Switzerland. The Factory was originally planned for an annual production of all steel broad gauge unfurnished second class coaches. These coaches were expected to be furnished by the different railways in their own workshop. Initially the production was planned to assemble 200 nos of coaches using the assemblies from the collaborators in knockdown condition and later this was followed by regular manufacture of coaches right from the detailed components. As they believed that the coaches from ICF could be furnished most economically, railway Ministry took a decision to build a furnishing annexed to the Integral Coach Factory, so that every coach built in this factory could be turned out fully furnished. The first coach fully furnished in ICF utilizing the temporary facilities was dispatched on 21 st of February in the year 1957. The construction of the permanent furnishing annexed was completed during 1962 and the first fully furnished coach from this annexed was turned out on 16th of January in the year 1962. To meet the increased demand of the zonal Railways production was gradually stepped up. In stepping up of the production, the production plan was recast for diversify production. This factory is now fully geared to produce a number of varieties of Broad Gauge, Meter Gauge and Electrical Multiple Unit Stocks, including cars and Air conditioned Coaches, Double Decker Coaches as well as Track Recording Cars. This factory has already produced coaches of sixty different designs. Even though ICF was built to the domestic needs of coaching stock a break through was made on the front during April 1967, by exporting two-meter-gauge bogies, to Thailand. A number of bogie tracks as well as varieties of fully furnished coaches designed and built according to buyer specifications have already been exported to various countries.

OBJECTIVES OF ICF :

The main objectives to be achieved are as follows:(a) To manufacture all metal light weight coaches from ordinary II class to most complicated types of coaches i.e., A.C., and D.C., EMUS., A.C Express, Rajdhani Express etc., of late, Integral coach Factory has entered into export market also supplying coaches to foreign countries. (b) Manufacture of (i) Components required for storage and subsequent issue to the Production. (ii) Spares for other Railways for the maintenance of ICF coaches. (iii) A little portion of capital works and work for outsiders are the Activities of the ICF. (c) Since the production consists of limited repetition work and a definite number of coaches is to be more suitable and accordingly this has been introduced.

EXPORT: Integral Coach Factorys achievements on the export front have been enviable since its inception. Against stiff international competition from more advanced countries like Japan, Britain, France, etc., Integral Coach Factory secured several export orders most of which are repeat orders. So far, 359 bogies and 485 coaches including air-conditioned coaches have exported to 11 Afro-Asian countries, Integral Coach Factory has bagged a number of awards for Export Excellence also. Recently Integral Coach Factory has manufactured and supplied 15 coaches to Vietnam National Railways (VNR) and 27 coaches to Tanzania Railways Compartments. (TRC).

THE DIVISIONS OF ICF 1. SHELL DIVISION: 2. FURNISHING DIVISION: SHELL DIVISION: Since most of the manufacturing activities are involved in shell division, this division has numerous General Purpose (GPM) and Special Purpose Machines (SPM). This division has nearly 950 machines shell division makes the shell of coaches out of Carten Steel Sheets. Bogie details are forged, machined and assembled in this division. Body shells are wheeled onto bogies and are sent to furnishing division. In value terms, the value of shells does not vary substantial. However based on the type of coaches furnished the value of coaches vary between the two extreme points. While furnishing the ordinary second class coaches cost Rs. 10 lakhs, the cost of furnishing DMU, DPC is Rs. 1.20 Cr. Hence, the cost of manufactured coaches is ultimately determined by the type of coaches furnished. FURNISHING DIVISION: It furnishes the shell that is the interior decorations and all electrical installation which associates are filled to it. Hence there are no big or heavy machines in this division. However in furnishing most of the materials are procured from trade and fitted into the coaches. Hence, the study is limited to shell division only.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS IN SHELL DIVISION: The authority for manufacture of components or assembly thereof is communicated through the issue of Route Cards. The route cards contain instructions to shops regarding the Operation to be carried out in the various shops and load centres in their sequence. The materials and tools to be used and Time required for setting up machines and operations.

10

The Route Cards bears all relevant particulars per work orders system of classification as also drawing number of the components along with the route card, all other documents (viz) Job cards, Material Requisition. Squad Job cards, Idle Time cards are also sent duly providing all the relevant information required for each Batch / Work Order. The computer on advice prepares almost all their documents form Production Engineer. However, the batches are subdivided into sub-batches, handwritten job cards are issued by Production Engineer. Complete manufacturing and painting of outer skeleton of shell and bogies are carried out in Integral Coach Factory. It is further divided into many shops under which there are different shops, which take care off various machining and fabricating process.

11

COMPETITORS ICF does have two main competitors as far as India is concerned but While exporting they need to compete with many Overseas Coach manufacturers. Competition in India Rail Coach Factory (RCF) Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited Factory Rail Coach Factory (RCF One of the significant Competitor of ICF in India is Rail Coach Factory (RCF ) which was Established in 1986. it is the second coach manufacturing unit of Indian Railways. SWOT ANALYSIS SWOT analysis is a strategic planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at Stanford University in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies. A SWOT analysis must first start with defining a desired end state or objective. A SWOT analysis may be incorporated into the strategic planning model. Strategic Planning, has been the subject of much research.
