April is always an exciting time of year
for those of us who plant gardens. Te earth becomes ready to till,
temperatures are on the rise and our energy levels seem to get a
spike. Growing up, my dad had it mastered. Just the right seed
varieties were ordered, crop rotation was mapped out and soil was
prepared to perfection. Let the work begin!
It is so appropriate that we celebrate Earth Day this month.
April 22 marks the 42nd anniversary of this movement to encour-
age awareness and appreciation for Earth and its resources. Tis
year, Earth Day Network calls upon more than one billion people
around the globe to help Mobilize the Earth. We are encouraged
to unite for a sustainable future and encourage others, including
organizations and governments, to do their part.
What diference can we make? Maybe, as a family, you could
plant a tree in remembrance of a departed loved one; or individu-
ally make a commitment to write to your government ofcials,
shop local or invest in reusable, canvas shopping bags. When
taken collectively, these small acts can make a diference!
We have so many great articles to share with you this month.
Speaking of planting, Will Allen of Growing Power gives us the
dirt on the importance of healthy soil and why we should both
make and use compost. Alexandria Binkowski gives us a good
overview of naturopathy, a system of holistic medicine. And, Bob
Mair ofers an option for you to consider in light of rising gas
prices. Tese are just a few examples of ways you can live healthier
and reduce your carbon footprint please read on for more!
Best wishes to all of you on your path to healthy living. Please
fnd a special way to leave your mark this Earth Day!

E
lectric vehicles have long been promoted as the future of
vehicle travel in the United States. Reduced dependence
on foreign oil and cleaner operation are two of the primary
reasons for this. If speculation is correct, however, another reason for
going electric will arise by this summer skyrocketing fuel prices.
Estimations of $5.00 per gallon gasoline are becoming more and
more common as prices continue to rise.
Tere are a number of available vehicle types using electric power.
Full speed electric vehicles are increasing in availability quickly.
Tese battery-powered cars and trucks will travel at highway speeds
and look like comparable gasoline-powered vehicles. Operating costs
are low. Tey do have drawbacks, however. Youll pay a premium of
$20,000 or more when compared to a similar gasoline-powered car
or truck. A special outlet is needed to charge these in a reasonable
amount of time. Range is currently limited to about 75 miles.
Hybrids have become a popular choice recently. Tese use an
electric motor and a gasoline motor for power. Tey typically cost
about $10,000 more than a gasoline vehicle, and youll see about
a 15 percent increase in fuel economy. However, hybrids are still
dependent on fossil fuels.
Electric low speed vehicles (LSVs) are an option that is rapidly
growing in popularity. Electric LSVs can be charged quickly from
a standard household outlet. Street legal models are designed to be
driven on roads with speed limits of 35 miles per hour or less. Tey
are short trip vehicles, with operating ranges of 40 to 50 miles on a
charge. Street legal electric LSVs can be purchased for under $6,900.
Lower operating costs are one of the biggest benefts of owning an
electric LSV. Based on current electrical rates, the cost to fully charge
a typical electric LSV is $0.88. With a range of 40 miles on a charge,
the cost per mile to drive an electric LSV is only 2.2 cents per mile. If
gas prices reach $4.00 per gallon, a gasoline-powered vehicle would
need to achieve a whopping 182 miles per gallon to equal the per mile
cost to drive an electric LSV. If gas reaches $5.00 per gallon, that goes
up to a whopping 222 miles per gallon. Even as gasoline-powered
vehicles improve in terms of fuel economy, achieving the low operat-
ing cost of an electric LSV will be nearly impossible. Since electric
LSVs can be plugged into a standard household outlet, charging is
easy and convenient, whether youre at home or on the road.
Electric LSVs are for more than personal use. Columbia ParCar
and Star EV both have a great selection of electric LSVs for commer-
cial use, too. A variety of box styles is available on small trucks, from
tilt beds to walk-in storage to refuse haulers. People haulers for resort
and campus use are also available. Due to the fact that these vehicles
have no exhaust, they can be used inside a factory or warehouse,
where the compact size is also an advantage. College campuses, large
or multi-building manufacturing complexes, city utilities, farms
and campgrounds are just a few of the business types already taking
advantage of this cost-saving technology right here in Wisconsin.
To learn more about the electric LSVs featured in this article,
visit www.meelif.com and click on the Columbia ParCar or Star
EV links. For more information about purchasing your own
electric LSV, e-mail Bob Mair, Major Account/Fleet Manager at

events throughout Wisconsin to teach the public the benefts of LSVs and electric-

O
nly nature heals is the philosophy of naturopathy, a
system of holistic medicine. It is a healthcare system
that features only natural ingredients and disciplines.
Healthy eating, clean water, exercise and relaxation are essential
ingredients for a healthy lifestyle and the foundations on which
naturopathy is built. Naturopathy prescribes to a multidisciplinary
treatment plan embracing many natural modalities.
Te word naturopathy was frst used in the United States
110 years ago. Te philosophy and natural therapies have been
efectively used to treat physical and emotional conditions since
ancient times. Even Hippocrates, the Greek father of medicine,
who lived 2400 years ago, was called the father of naturopathic
medicine since he incorporated diet, fasting, hydrotherapy, exer-
cise and manipulative techniques gentle treatments that do
not obscure the bodys own healing powers into his health-
care system. Natural healers and naturopaths of the late 19th and
early 20th centuries believed in healing by bringing strength to
the individual rather than by treating specifc disorders. Besides
the modalities Hippocrates used, botanicals, homeopathy, energy
therapy and other natural treatments were added. Tis concept
has long been at the core of indigenous medicine in many cultures
around the world, not only promoting health and well-being, but
also advocating a healthy choice of primary prevention.
Naturopathy is founded on
the basis of these basic principles:
The vital force: Te body can fght disease and recover from
illness because it possesses a vital curative force that enables the
body systems to return to a state of harmony known as homeosta-
sis. Tis state tends toward perfect health and naturopathy aims
to restore and preserve it. Health is not simply the absence of
disease, but a state in which each person feels physically, mentally,
emotionally and spiritually well and in total balance.
Naturopathy sees disease as a natural phenomenon:
Disease occurs in plants, animals and people when any part of the
whole organism is not working well due to bad diet, poor elimi-
nation of wastes, injury, hereditary factors, destructive emotions,
suppressive drugs, lack of exercise and environmental pollutants.
Tese can all afect the healthy functioning of cells so that the body
is thrown out of balance. Te aim of naturopathy is to identify the
cause of the illness, help the vital force eliminate it and restore the
body to a state of balance.
The symptoms of disease: Tese are ofen evidence of the
healing process in action. Tey are the signs that the vital force
is striving to balance the body and should not be suppressed in
healthy individuals. Going through acute (short-term) illnesses is
seen as normal in a healthy body.
Treatmentshouldbeholisticandnatural:Tis is the means
to activate and strengthen the bodys innate healing ability and to
bring the diseased body part or emotion into balance with the rest
of the body. Treatments enhance and work with, not against, the
bodys ability to heal itself for lasting health. Patient education is
an essential principle of treatment.
Naturopathybelievesinthetriadofhealth:Total health
depends on maintaining a balance between mind, body and spirit.
Naturopathy believes in the law of cure, that is, in healing; all
disease moves from within out, from the top to the bottom and
symptoms disappear in reverse order of their appearance.

Natures Pathways

I
n our minds, we tend to allow ourselves to live in constant
awareness of our past experiences. For the most part, we allow
ourselves to focus more on the times weve fallen short of the
mark or where weve experienced enormous hurt. Reliving these
times can leave us feeling guilty, regretful, anxious and/or flled
with worry and pain, and can lead us to revisit the same thoughts
daily. Dwelling on the past, what could have been, what was or the
hurt we experienced, is really unproductive for anyone.
Im a frm believer that things happen for a reason; however, we
need to learn to utilize experiences for what they truly are. Tey are
lessons in life, guides for us to use so we dont make the same mistakes
over and over or opportunities for us to build strength and use it posi-
tively. Letting go of the past can be extremely difcult, I understand
that. But truly harping on it repeatedly helps us how exactly? Dont
we all want to be productive and inspired, or change something about
our lives that really is unhealthy for our minds, spirits and bodies?
Its similar to a person who smokes daily; on average it takes a
person seven true attempts to quit smoking before they are success-
ful in quitting completely. Again, its about making a personal
choice to quit smoking for the right reasons and facing the fear
of stepping out of what brings us comfort. In essence, when we
revisit negative thoughts, we allow ourselves to continue to give
them life. Did you ever think we do that because it helps us vali-
date the crime with the punishment? Not forgiving ourselves or
others is what makes us prisoners in our own beings. Te difer-
ence is learning to surrender to the feeling or experience, and
changing what we can today, by letting it go and learning from it.
Some things are just out of our control, but that doesnt mean
we have to give away our control over something or someone
from the past, leaving us to take on reoccurring negativity in our
minds. When we allow this to happen, we limit our ability to live
completely. Tere is no freedom when we remain prisoners of our
pasts, as doing so only allows us to give it more life and it just
keeps growing within us, our minds and beings. We need to allow
ourselves the opportunity to fall back into our own being to truly
rid ourselves of pasts that we allow to eat at us.
Teres a great quote by Eckhart Tolle, Whatever you fght, you
strengthen, and what you resist, persists. Remember its all in how
we perceive a certain event in our past, its truly only our interpreta-
tion of reality and others see it diferently than us. If we choose to
live in a state of resistance for whatever reasons, in a state of what
we could refer to as opposition, we ultimately create continuously
realities and lives that we dont like, want or need for ourselves.
Lets allow ourselves, our minds and our spirits to be, to dream.
Dont live with the behaviors weve all been taught as children, or
conditioned to believe as adults. Lets choose to forgive, accept,
love again and grow from our pasts. Let our imaginations dream,
stop giving our beings and power away to pasts that are long gone.
Live for today and have happier and more productive tomorrows
if not for ourselves, simply for those whom we love or maybe
for those that weve even hurt who may have already forgiven us.
Lets stop living with regret and unleash our full potential to live
healthy, happy and well-balanced lives!

Chronic disorders can appear worse before they get better as
symptoms come to the surface, called a healing crisis.
Naturopathy is a philosophy for life rather than a set of infexible
principles. In the early days, Naturopaths learned by personal expe-
rience of illness and recovery using natural treatments. Tere was
no formal education. Around 1920, from coast to coast, there were
a number of naturopathic medical schools. By mid-century, natu-
ropathy started to decline due to the rise of scientifc medicine, the
discovery and increasing use of miracle drugs, institutionalization
of a large medical system based on high-tech and pharmaceutical
treatments. By the 1970s, naturopathy began to enter a new era
of rejuvenation. Today, there are accredited naturopathic medical
schools, but not all states have licensing for naturopaths.
Te new schools have gotten away from total natural modali-
ties and have incorporated some traditional studies, as well as
doing an internship, as these naturopaths are considered primary
care physicians. Courses studied are: nutrition, botanical medi-
cine, physical medicine, homeopathy, massage, physical and
clinical diagnosis, laboratory diagnosis and diagnostic imaging,
emergency medicine, psychology, pharmacology, minor surgery,
acupuncture, oriental medicine, and basic and clinical sciences.
Tis is very diferent from the courses that I studied, such as: life
chemistry, herbology, iridology, nutritional healing, kinesiology,
refexology, theory of disease, acupressure, mental health, home-
opathy, healing energy and spiritual development.
On the East and West Coasts, naturopathy is a household word
with medical insurances paying for their services; but the South
and Midwest are slow to accept and bring back this form of life-
style and medicine.
When selecting a naturopath, it is very benefcial to know their
philosophy on health and healing, what services they ofer, etc. Ten,
compare these to your philosophies, choosing the practitioner whom
you feel would help you to maintain or regain total balanced health.
Naturopathy is not about dispensing cures for illnesses, it
requires commitment and ofen major lifestyle changes by the
client. It is a joint responsibility between the client and the prac-
titioner. Consultations are thorough regarding, mind, body,
emotional and spiritual issues, diet, stress, exercise routines,
family history, medications and supplementation, sleep patterns,
relationships, elimination patterns, career issues, etc. A great deal
of teaching should be performed by the practitioner. Naturopathy
can deal with any physical or emotional issue you are concerned
about for any age of client.
We are living in a wonderful time where there are so many
options for us to choose what we feel and believe to be the best for
our highest good and to live optimally and healthy. It is a time to
take back our responsibility of making educated, sound decisions
for our bodies and lives.

T
hunderstorms and spring trips to the vet or groomer may
be warm weather phobias that send your dog or cat into
full panic mode, whining, barking frantically, trembling,
pacing! Holistic veterinarians can suggest solutions for this distress
that are healthier than conventional tranquilizers. An efective
natural solution ofen requires a multimodal approach, however.
Nervous attempts to calm your pet can make matters worse. You
need to be the voice of reason. You need to be calm and confdent.
Go about your business as if everything is fne and routine. Your
pet looks to you for courage and strength. Too much wooing and
cooing can make him think that there is a reason to be concerned.
Play some relaxing music in your home if it is raining and there
is lightning or in your car if your pet is distraught while traveling
in a vehicle. However, this is not the time for rock music!
Tundershirts mimic the efect attained when one swaddles an
infant. Te snugness of a blanket, a onesie, a tight t-shirt provides
a sense of security. Some pets will hide in the bathtub, under the
bed or in a closet to try to achieve this same efect on their own.
Some brands of thundershirts provide extra pressure at acupunc-
ture points that are associated with sedation. Most pets are calmer
and safer if restrained in a carrier or pet seatbelt when traveling in
a vehicle on the way to an unnerving appointment.
A fower essence blend called Rescue Remedy has been used for
years to calm anxious humans and animals. As this is a homeo-
pathic, it is most efective when the symptom picture is matched,
if it is selected as a remedy. Since this is ofen not possible, you will
fnd this product works like a charm for some individuals and not
at all for others. Because it is not consistently efective, I do not
routinely recommend it, however, it does not hurt to try it. Flower
essences are extremely safe.
I have found western herbal formulations to be more reliable than
homeopathics; however, they are very dose dependent. Tey only
work if you give enough. I use glycerin extracts for dogs and cats.
Tey are weaker than alcohol extracts, but sweeter, therefore much
more palatable, especially for cats. My favorite product is the Animal
Apawthecary Tranquility Blend. Tis liquid is safe for a dog or cat. I
recommend one full dropper orally for a cat or tiny dog, up to four
full droppers for a large dog such as a retriever. Tis takes twenty to
thirty minutes to relax your pet, so you need to plan accordingly. Tis
can be used several times in one day if needed. Tis should not be
used daily, long term. Te energetics of foods and herbs can diminish
or exacerbate anxiety. Te Animal Apawthecary Blend of valerian,
skullcap, oatstraw and passion fower was expertly formulated by
Greg Tilford, a trusted herbalist who authored Herbs for Pets and
harvests quality plants from his land in Montana.
In 1969, a study performed on cats given valerian orally showed
a decrease in restlessness, fear and aggression. Lab animal research
has demonstrated sedative and anticonvulsant properties of vale-
rian whole herb extract and some of its constituents via an infu-
ence on GABAnergic neurons.
If daily calming is needed, a Chinese herbal formulation may
be benefcial. Dr. Huisheng Xie, founder and instructor at the Chi

has formulated a 16 herbal blend
called Shen Calmer. Shen
means mind. Pets and horses
who are shen disturbed will
relax, fdget less, travel better
and be more receptive to train-
ing, veterinary or grooming
care when they consume this
plant combination on a regular
basis. Tis brown powder can
be mixed in food. One of the
herbals contained within is Chai
hu, also known as bupleurum. In
mice studies, it has not only been
shown to have sedative proper-
ties, but also immunostimulant
and liver protective. Research on its constituents has demonstrated
analgesic, antipyretic, anti-infammatory and even antibiotic efects.
Another very pleasant modality used to soothe man and beast
is aromatherapy. A cold air, nebulizing difuser is the best method
to deliver potent calming essential oils to an anxious patient.
However, a drop on the fur or pet bed can be quick, simple, efec-
tive and inexpensive. Tiny difusers are also manufactured to
attach to a pets collar. Perhaps the essential oil with the most noto-
riety for calming is lavender. My favorite blend is called Peace and
Calming. It contains blue tansy, patchouli, tangerine, orange and
ylang ylang. Tangerine contains esters and aldehydes, which are
sedating and calming. A 1995 Mie University study documented
the ability of citrus fragrances to bring about a sense of security in
humans. Animals are more sensitive to the efects of oils.
Many pets will calm with a gentle touch or even enjoy a massage.
I call massage petting with intent.
You may combine, in fact you should combine, several of these
techniques for maximum efectiveness.
Many pets
will calm with

Question: I have a friend thats using some question-
able supplements. How should I approach him
given the fact that he seems to believe theyre
working well?
Answer: Tis is a tough question to
answer, but you might want to start by
telling him that diet is a huge part of the
equation, and that supplemen-
tation, though useful at times,
cant make up for a defcient
diet. Ten, I would have
him meet with a quali-
fed expert that can take
a look at the supplements
hes using and provide some real, science-based feed-
back on the safety and efcacy of the products. Sports
dietitians have specialized training in this area, and you
can fnd one in your area by checking out the SCAN Web
site (www.scandpg.org). Keep in mind, if he truly feels that the
supplements are helping him achieve his goals, there might not be
anything you can say that will change his mind. Just
know that you did all you could.
Question: Is it true that you can only digest 30 grams of protein
at a time?
Answer: No this is defnitely a myth. Some claim that Lou
Ferrigno came up with this one back in the 1970s, but no one
knows for sure. I am amazed at how many people think this is true,
and Im also curious to know where these folks think the rest of the
protein (above and beyond 30 grams) goes if it isnt digested. Te
simple truth is that you can digest any amount of protein that you
ingest, but the caveat here is that the digestive process will just take
that much longer. Tis is true of any macronutrient. Te more you
eat, the longer it takes to process simple as that. If you happen
to hear this myth being bantered about in the gym at some point,
be sure to put forth the real facts.

Question: Is it okay to do casual physical activities on my days
of from working out?
Answer: Absolutely! Scheduled physical activities arent necessar-
ily warranted, but it doesnt mean you cant go out and have fun. Tis
includes playing with your kids, going for a walk with your spouse or
partner or playing a sport with some friends. Youll obviously improve
your ftness and health by doing this and, for most folks, it really isnt

hen you fast, you are taking on a deliberate
absence of food. Fasting is being looked at by
many as a healthy process of cleansing ones system.
Tis process is proclaimed to rid the body of so-called toxins,
boost metabolism and jump start weight loss. However, none of
this is proven or backed up scientifcally.
While short-term fasting (using the right method) is prob-
ably safe, long-term fasting deprives the body of many important
nutrients. Extended fasting coaxes your endocrine system to slow,
which in turn, slows down your metabolism.
While in a non-fasting state or normal metabolic conditions,
ones body gets its energy primarily from glucose and fat supplied
by the foods you ingest. Both your brain and nervous system use
these macronutrients for energy as well as proper functioning.
Additionally, ones body also stores energy in both the muscles and
liver in the form of glycogen.
Within just hours of starting a fast, dietary glucose (your main
energy source) is used up. When this happens, your body draws
on its stored reserves. Once these reserves are exhausted, your
body passes into an altered metabolic state. While in this state,
your body turns to its own protein to make glucose for brain and
nervous system functions. Tis results in a considerable break-
down in lean muscle tissue and the production of ketones. Tis
is a very unhealthy and undesirable state to be in.
Although you will most likely lose weight, it will be due to
water loss, dehydration and muscle tissue wasting. This state
will most likely be accompanied by feelings of fatigue as well
as dizziness.
Terefore, afer years of abusing the body with poor nutritional
habits, a fasting state is not the answer to better health. Your body
is truly craving proper nutrition, including whole grains, fresh

W
ith so many baby products on the market, its hard
to be on top of whats best for baby these days. As a
new mom-to-be myself, Ive been especially engrossed
in whats the latest in baby care. Whats the best way for baby
to sleep? What are the best baby foods? To swaddle or not to
swaddle? Whats best for relaxation? How do you properly sling
your baby? Te list goes on and on. One thing that I have found to
be consistent across the latest baby dos and donts is that the best
thing that one can do for baby is to simply get back to the basics.
Luckily for me, a back to basics philosophy is nothing new,
and one that we apply to everything we do at Oliv 426. And
when it comes to products for baby, we believe that less is def-
nitely best. We know how destructive additives and preservatives
are on our skin, and we want products that will nourish skin, not
harm it. According to Dr. Jennifer Shu, MD and medical editor of
healthychildren.org, a newborn babys skin can be up to fve times
thinner than that of an adult, making it much more sensitive than
even an older child or a grown-up.
So where does one start?
Washes & Cleansers
In a society obsessed with cleanliness, its easy to overdo it. Babies
lack the apocrine sweat glands that cause body odor in teens and
adults. Accordingly, in the frst year, babies need very little washing
or soap to stay clean.
Many washes on the market today contain heavy amounts of
fragrance and cleansing chemicals unnecessary for babies. Look
for fragrance-free and/or hypoallergenic options. Tis will help to
decrease the chances of possible skin irritation, as well as the variety
of chemicals you expose your baby to. Additionally, be cautious of
stronger soaps that can strip the layer of protective oils from your
babys skin, which can lead to skin irritation. Mild soaps are best.
Try using a castile-based cleanser for an extremely gentle tear-free
wash. Castile soaps are made exclusively from vegetable oil rather than
animal fat or synthetic substances. As an added beneft, the simple
nature of the soap means a lesser environmental impact due to reduced
waste stream during manufacture and also faster biodegradability.
Baby Bum Help
A red irritated bottom is the last thing you want to fnd
when you open your little ones diaper. But its not unusual
for infants and toddlers to develop diaper rash, a skin
condition that occurs from wearing diapers. Materials that
keep diapers from leaking can also prevent air from circulat-
ing, which can stimulate a rash. If your baby does get a diaper
rash, the American Academy of Physicians recommends:
Gently clean the diaper area with water and a sof washcloth.
Disposable diaper wipes may also be used. Avoid wipes that
contain alcohol and fragrance. Use soap and water only if the
stool does not come of easily. If the rash is severe, use a squirt
bottle of water so you can clean and rinse without rubbing.
Pat dry; do not rub. Allow the area to air-dry fully.
Apply a thick layer of protective ointment or cream (such as
one that contains zinc oxide or petroleum jelly). Tese oint-
ments are usually thick and pasty and do not have to be
completely removed at the next diaper change. Remem-
ber, heavy scrubbing or rubbing will only damage the
skin more.
Do not put the diaper on too tight, especially overnight.
Keep the diaper loose so that the wet and soiled parts do
not rub against the skin as much.
Use creams with steroids only if your pediatrician
recommends them. Tey are rarely needed and may
be harmful.
Again, look for ointment, creams or salves
that are all-natural and contain only the

most basic ingredients so you know what youre putting on your
baby. Try a product like Oliv 426s Baby Bum Stick containing
olive oil, plantain, chickweed, calendula, shea butter, zinc oxide
and beeswax for infammation relief, moisture blocking and ulti-
mate skin nourishment.
To moisturize or not to moisturize?
It is common within the frst month for babies to have healing,
dry skin, and in general a skin moisturizer may not be necessary.
However, if afer the frst month, dry skin persists, consider integrat-
ing a moisturizer into your routine. When selecting a baby moistur-
izer, here again, less is best. Stay away from heavily fragranced or any
moisturizers with additives or ingredients that you cant pronounce.
Look for simple all-natural creams, lotions and oils. Many of our
customers prefer our simple olive baby lotion that we keep to three
all-natural, healing ingredients: olive oil, beeswax and purifed water.
Apply the lotion or moisturizer immediately afer bath while
skin is still wet, and then pat dry instead of rubbing. While apply-
ing the lotion, the baby receives an informal massage, which can
be pleasurable and may even have health benefts.
When in doubt, Patricia Treadwell, M.D., FAAP, professor of pedi-
atrics and dermatology at the Indiana University School of Medicine
and former chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on
Dermatology, provides some simple, yet great advice, Treat the skin
gently and if there is a reaction to a substance, avoid it.
Following this advice throughout childhood can help ensure
beautiful skin for life.

T
here is a growing trend in America, a move-
ment back to the natural, holistic approach to
healing and healthcare and Shelley Riutta, MSE, LPC,
a holistic psychotherapist, couldnt be more thrilled.
She understands that, many, many people are desper-
ately seeking the holistic approach in therapy and
healing, one that addresses their issues at the core level
using mind, body and spirit approaches. In fact, there
is a resurgence of interest in avoiding medications and
the placement of blame on disease for lifes struggles.
Holistic healing can be traced back at least 5000 years
to China and India. Over the centuries, such notables as
Socrates and Plato have extolled the benefts of the holis-
tic approach. They believed in promoting a healthy way
of living, living in harmony with nature and thinking
of the body as a whole, more than the sum of its parts.
In her article, History of Alternative Medicine, Eliza-
beth Morgan explains it further that the energy of the
body had to be in harmony with the mind, body and
spirit. The healer was of service to his patients by iden-
tifying and taking away obstacles that would inevitably
lead to a cure. People were taught to use self-care, life-
style changes and preventive measures as therapy.
While the holistic approach was the norm in America up
until mid-20th century, the decades following World War
II brought new medical breakthroughs. This included the
explosion in pharmaceutical use the advent of modern
medicine. During this time, holistic methods became
known as alternative medicine, and more mainstream
practitioners deemed the practice ineffective and fraudu-
lent. This lead many people away from holistic healing, or,
to remain quiet about their involvement with it.

v
Despite a bit of stigma, Shelley Riutta, a Wisconsinite, always felt a
calling to holistic healing. Even while enrolled in business school, she
fostered her interest in the mind, body, spirit connection. She carried
with her a passion about self-growth and learning about people.
Upon graduation with a degree in business, Riutta found that
nothing was working on that path in her life and she felt off track
with her authentic self. It then became clear to Riutta that she
needed to follow her passion.
She went back to school for psychotherapy and earned a gradu-
ate degree in counseling from UW-Oshkosh. Everything made
sense from that point on. Once you line up with your mission in
life, everything falls into place, says Riutta.
She went on to build a very successful holistic psychotherapy prac-
tice. So reputable, in fact, that she kept getting contacted by therapists
and healers across the country seeking support in building their prac-
tices. Riutta found that many of her peers were having trouble getting
started and becoming successful. Suddenly, she realized why her path
took her to business school. That experience enabled her to under-
stand the intricacies of the business side of operating a practice.
This lead Riutta to develop and found the Global Association of Holis-
tic Psychotherapy (GAHP) in June 2010. GAHP is my way to support
therapists, healers and coaches in working holistically with their clients
and in developing thriving holistic practices, explains Riutta.
The main programs offered through GAHP include: Certifca-
tion programs; annual membership in GAHP for practice build-
ing and learning about holistic methods; and platinum programs
to help people accelerate the growth of their holistic practices. All
are centered on supporting therapists, healers and coaches to build
thriving practices.
GAHPs certifcation training program has two tracks: Track 1 is
for licensed psychotherapists and enables participants to become
GAHP certifed in Holistic Psychotherapy; and Track 2, which was
developed later, after Riutta received repeated calls of interest, is for
healers, coaches and health practitioners, who then become GAHP
certifed in Holistic Coaching. Both tracks are three and one half
months in length and consist of a two and one half day live training
with Training tele-classes that follow.
In offering this support, Riutta encourages her clients to have
clarity about their mission. The more clarity you have about your
mission, the easier it will be for you to move beyond your fears
and take action.
Many of her GAHP clients have to be encouraged to overcome
their fear. She explains that if you are in fear, you are in your ego
and have lost focus of your mission, which is to be of service. When
your focus is on service, you are in your higher self, your true
nature. At this point, it is not about you.
GAHP clients also learn about the importance of marketing and
confdence. Riutta cant stress enough the value in embracing market-
ing. She encourages her clients to put energy and effort into this
endeavor. There are strategies practitioners can implement in ways that
feel congruent with who they are, says Riutta. As far as confdence, she
teaches her clients the value of having confdence in who they are and
the beautiful healing gifts they have to share with their clients.
In her work with GAHP, Riutta is changing peoples lives as
Brenda Velissaris shares, I worked with Shelley in both her group
programs and in her GAHP Holistic Psychotherapy Training
Program. From my
work there, I was
able to reach a dream
that I had for a long
time having my
own private practice.
Shelley was there as
I moved through my
fears and took the
leap. I have people
calling me specifcally
because they saw on
my Web site that I am
a member of GAHP
and am trained in
holistic modalities.
Ellen Dumer has
similar thoughts,
Shelley shared her
personal experience
enabling me to avoid costly, time-wasting mistakes in building my
practice. By using the knowledge she has given me, my exposure
has expanded and so has my client base.
By helping her many GAHP clients, like Velissaris and Dumer, to
build and expand their holistic practices, many more people are
able to be helped by holistic approaches. Riutta sees this as a way
to spread the word that the holistic approach is a powerful path of
healing, especially for the many, many people who are looking for
healing without having to use medication right now.
While Riutta takes great pride in her ability to support the careers of
her clients, and support, inspire and nourish their spirits; she now has
a second love: teaching business and marketing to holistic practitioners.
Once I connected the dots that by teaching marketing to my clients
to help them fll their practices and workshops translated to more
healing happening on the planet then I was hooked!.
Now thats coming full circle!

through Workshop. For all the details go to www.thegahp.com.

O
utside, the birds are fying north, the worms are resur-
facing and the days are getting longer: spring is on its
way. At Growing Power this means we are planting seeds
for transplants, transforming our hoop houses for the warmer
weather and, most importantly, composting over 40 million
pounds of food waste to produce fertile, nutrient-rich soil that will
grow food for thousands of people.
We consider our soil the foundation of our farm opera-
tions. Without healthy soil,
you simply cannot establish
a healthy food system. Te
plants and fruits we eat source
their nutrients from the soil
that sustains them. Te earth
has ofen been stripped of the
nutrients and microorganisms
needed to support healthy plant growth. For decades, farmers
were told to rely on synthetic fertilizers and insecticides, which
can be toxic to humans and our environment.
At Growing Power, we have chosen a diferent path. We are
reclaiming food waste that would otherwise go into a landfll,
mixing it with wood chips and other waste sources high in carbon,
and creating nutrient-rich soil. We are literally turning one mans
garbage into another mans gold. Every yard of compost purchased
from Growing Power reduces an estimated 1,500 pounds of food
waste from entering the landfll! We are also creating a high-
quality fertilizer by feeding this compost and other food waste to
millions of red wiggler worms. Te worm castings that the red
wigglers create when they eat through our compost is so healthy
for plants that we call it black gold.
Acquiring compost from Growing Power or training on how
to grow your own compost is easy. We sell compost, worm
castings and even worms at our retail store at 5500 W. Silver
Spring Drive in Milwaukee. We also ofer delivery through our
exciting new program, the 20,000 Backyard Gardens Initia-
tive. Every year we also ofer
monthly workshops on topics
such as aquaculture/aquapon-
ics, beekeeping, community
project design, living biologi-
cal growing systems (compost-
ing and vermiculture), hoop
house construction, year-
round production and marketing, mycoscaping (mushrooms),
and renewable energy solar power.
Without the support of our greater community, we would not
be able to capture this waste headed for the landfll and turn it
into a valuable resource to grow food. Our motto has always
been, Together, we are Growing Power. And, only together can
we transform our food system to meet the health and food needs
of people in all communities, regardless of their socio-economic
situation. We look forward to this spring and the opportunities
to work with folks, new and old, in creating healthy and vibrant
gardens that beneft people everywhere. We invite you to

A monthly advice
column for your
energy system
.....................................................................
Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something
many of us dont understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a prac-
ticing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions
you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy
anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life
patterns, etc. Te ideas written here do not replace medical atten-
tion. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving
advice of any kind.
Dear Tina,
How do distance healings work? It just doesnt make sense how an
energy worker can balance someone when they are not physically
there. Could you explain this please?
Keeping My Distance
Dear Keeping My Distance,
I completely understand why the idea of distance energy work,
healings and readings just doesnt make sense. Let me explain.
First of, energy is everything. Energy can never be created or
destroyed. What is here has always been here and always will. It
cannot disappear, it can only change forms. Our bodies are energy as
well as our thoughts, feelings, spiritual purpose, etc. Energy is every-
thing. It is basically data communicating to the world around us.
When a healer connects to a client, he/she is connecting to that
persons energy; not only the energy of their bodies, but every-
thing that embodies them. I can only speak to my process, so afer
I connect to a client, I tune into their energy through sight, sound
and touch. I speak directly to their spirit, which brings their whole
energy system in front of me and shows me what needs to be
worked on. Since energy is simply communicating data, it doesnt
matter where the person is physically located. Sometimes I have
in-person clients that need to use the bathroom in the middle of
the session. Tats no bother because Im already connected to
them; I just continue the healing as they take care of business!
Te important thing to think of related to distance work is your
comfort level. Most crucial is trust. You should feel comfortable
with the practitioner and trust that they are actually working with
your system since you are not physically there. Second, if you feel
you need an in-person session to get the full efects, honor that
need. Again, the process for a practitioner is the same whether
youre in-person or not; however, if it doesnt feel real to you, the
healing wont stick. Your comfort is a frst priority. Many people
prefer distance work because you usually get a full report detail-
ing the session, which may be difcult to remember if you are just
listening during the in-person session.
Our bodies are energy
as well as our thoughts,
feelings, spiritual purpose,
etc. Energy is everything.
Tina, a Madison Intuitive Counselor and Energy Healer, is a lifelong student of
the paranormal. She had her frst clairvoyant vision at a young age and continues
to see and hear energy. Tina is trained in clairvoyant reading and many modali-
ties of energy healing, but through professional training she was disappointed in
the methods many schools used to devalue everyones natural gifs. Tina started
Te Chakra House to teach how natural and easy it is to work with energy. She
believes that everyone has natural psychic gifs and can access their abilities if
they realized their potential.

Red raspberry also normalizes menstrual fow and relieves
cramping, which makes it a good tonic for menstruating women.
Due to the large amount of manganese in red raspberry leaves, it
can be helpful to relieve ringing in the ear. Too much red rasp-
berry can cause loose bowels.
Raspberry leaves can be infused in hot water to make tea.
Tis is done by pouring one cup of boiling water over one or
two teaspoons of raspberry leaves and allowing to steep for 15
minutes. Strain and drink. Other methods of preserving the leaves
are by drying them and putting them in capsules or making them
into a tincture.

A
fresh bar of natural soap. Te wrapper crinkles as it falls
away, revealing a solid, shapely slice, smooth and unctu-
ous. Delicate aroma or abundant bouquet? Creamy white or
enthusiastically shaded by minerals, herbs, spices or fowers? Is the
lather foamy or bubbly? Does it rinse of easily or linger with added
emollients? Does my skin feel healthier, smoother, sofer or tighter?
Soaps and their ingredients have changed considerably over the
last millennia, but a good recipe and high-quality natural ingredi-
ents have always made a big diference.
For most of history, a successful batch of soap happened pretty
much by chance. But during Europes 13th century, a plentiful
supply of olives used for their oil, and lye from the ashes of the
barilla plant made successful soap-making more common. By the
1700s other fats and oils were introduced to the recipe.
In our countrys early days, making soap was a once-a-year process.
Frontier women saved fat and meat scraps for an entire year. Tey
leached their own lye from ashes. Early in the summer they would
render the fat, transforming it into tallow, then guess the tempera-
ture of the fats in the boiling pot, add the lye and begin the process
of making soap. Times were tough. People used what was available.
In growing rural neighborhoods, traveling soapers would sell
door-to-door. Sometimes women would trade their fats for a
fnished product. It was mostly used as laundry soap, but was used
for many cleaning needs, including baths and shampoos.
Due to shortages of natural ingredients, inexpensive cleaning
agents were developed during World War II. Tese detergents
worked great to clean jet engines, but they were a factor in a multi-
tude of skin issues that people continue to sufer with today.
As the soap industry grew, it seemed that all of creation began to
sufer. Bacteria can break down soaps natural ingredients, but they
cant process the artifcial junk. Tis contributed to the pollution
and destruction of waterways and ecosystems worldwide. Many
soap manufacturers today produce soap that is friendlier to us and
the world around us.
Soaps main ingredients have always been fats and/or oils. Each one
has its own qualities. Oils are derived from plants. Animals produce
fats. Some people object to animal fat for health, ethical or religious
reasons, but there are a variety of oils from which to choose. Many
soaps use blends of fats or oils. Tis way, the soaper has more control
over the bars color, hardness, sudsing qualities and mildness.
Olive oil is a very popular ingredient in soaps today. Many of
olive oils dietary benefts are also present in its soap. Bars are usually
mild, moisturizing, long-lasting and loaded with luscious lather.
Palmoil produces a long-lasting bar. It can be used as a facial soap
because it is extra mild and rich, with luxurious long-lasting bubbles.
Coconut oil yields a hard white soap with plenty of creamy
lather. Te tradeof is that it can dry the skin. Most times it is
blended with other oils and usually occurs near the bottom of the
ingredient list.
Tallow is the rendered fat of beef cattle or sheep. Tallow bars
are white and hard, but mild on skin. Tese soaps produce small
creamy bubbles.
Lard is fat derived from pigs. Tese soap bars are white and
relatively hard, but extremely mild to the skin. Tey dont lather
much, so they may team up with other fats.
Glycerine, of vegetable origin, is not really an oil, but a by-prod-
uct of the oils during the soap-making process. It adds moisture
to the skin and is sometimes removed by commercial

L
ast month I took a stroll down the isles of the grocery and
big box stores, checking all the awful ingredients in store-
bought dog and cat treats. It was so much fun and so very
enlightening that I thought this month I would check out the dog
food section. Tis may be even more important because this is
what your dog eats daily.
I cant help but stop at this really colorful bag of food that I see
all the time on commercials, featuring a man saying he is a vet and
feeds his dog the best and all the carbs he needs for energy. Te
bag has an adorable hairy dog on it and beautiful colors of meat
and vegetables. It really looks yummy and impressive, so lets take a
look at the ingredients and clear a few things up for the unknowing
consumer. It is important to keep in mind that listed ingredients go
by weight, so the frst fve or so listed are the majority of your bag.
Te frst couple ingredients are ground yellow corn, corn gluten
meal and whole wheat four. Did you know that corn, wheat and
soy are the three biggest ofenders for dog allergies? When the
commercial says your dog needs all these carbs for energy remem-
ber that dogs are meat eaters. In the wild, they wouldnt be running
willy-nilly through the felds eating corn and wheat. Tey would
be eating a dead animal as a frst choice they are meat eaters.
Te next ingredient listed is meat, but meat by-product. As
you learned last month, by-product can be road kill, euthanized
animals from clinics in some areas and junk meat from grocery
stores even the old containers and the animal tags and collars.
Yuck! Also, it doesnt list what kind of meat. Is it chicken, is it beef,
is it road kill? How would you know what to avoid if you thought
your dog had a meat allergy? You always want your meat source to
be a whole meat. Beef, chicken, venison, so on. Now, if it is meat
meal, that is meat with the water removed. Tat actually means
there is more meat than if it just says chicken.
Our next ingredient is animal fat. We need some fat in pet foods,
but again, it doesnt identify the type of animal. Watch for it to say
beef or chicken. Again, if your dog has allergies you really need to
know what all the ingredients are specifcally.

Dog food ingredient
nightmares
A lot to learn
...............................
ByVickiRabeHarrison
Now we have rice four, soy four and sugar. Again, where is the
meat? My dog needs meat, not four and sugar that will just destroy
his teeth, cause diabetes, make him fat and get him so hooked on
this junk food that I wont get him to eat anything good for him.
We are hardly three rows down the list of ingredients. Next is the
biggie propylene glycol. Tats in antifreeze, just like all the junk
treats. Its a carrier that makes things sof. Would you knowingly give
your dog a little antifreeze? Oh, only a little, just a little couldnt possi-
bly hurt them. Tey are only dogs you know. I guess thats how the
manufactures must be thinking. Do you really think they care about
your dogs health? I think dollar signs are what they really care about.
Finally meat! Tere is actually meat in this bag! But again, I
dont really know what kind of meat. How would you know? Te
answer is you wouldnt know.
Next, I see red 40, yellow 5, yellow 6, and blue 2. I bet your dog
really appreciates all those beautiful added colors. Afer all, werent
they put there just for him? Our dogs dont care if there is color or
not. Tat is strictly put there as marketing for us humans.
Tis bag also says, supports healthy immune system. Sorry, I
didnt see any omega 3, fsh oil or digestive enzymes anywhere in
this ingredient list.
Tis was just the frst bag I checked, but I will guarantee, bag
afer bag in any grocery store or big box aisle will read the same,
just contain a diferent picture. Please learn to read ingredients
and know what they are.
To recap, stay away from anything that lists by-product, corn,
wheat and soy. Also, avoid the generic term meat, as you never
know what type of meat, which can be especially harmful if your
dog has allergies. You also dont want any artifcial colors or chem-
icals. It is all about food and there is a big diference between them.
Just read the labels. Happy hunting!

Series presented by Growing Power
This intensive, hands-on, training workshop of-
fers diverse groups the opportunity to learn, plan,
develop, operate and sustain community food
projects. Project participants leave the workshop

their communities and pass on to others. These
workshops are for both rural and urban projects.
We encourage you to bring several members
of your group or operation to these workshops if
you are interested in multiple topics; this is es-
pecially helpful if you are a member of a training
