If we would like to understand tense well, we must understand distinction between time and moment. Time has started from the creation of the universe and it will remain to us until the world destroy. Time is a vast field. To identify a work in time frame we have divided time as per If working time is. Before Now After For example, I teach you English. I am teaching you tense now. I have brought a paper for this. I have been teaching it for last two months. The verbs of this passage are in present tense as the completion time of verbs refers time now. I taught you English. I was teaching you tense then. I had brought a paper for this. I had been teaching it for last two months.

Time period will be Past Present Future

The verbs of this passage are in past tense as the completion time of verbs refers time before.

I will teach you English. I will be teaching you tense now. I will have brought a paper for this. I shall have been teaching it for last two months. The verbs of this passage are in future tense as the completion time of verbs refers time after.

Now the question is why verb form changes if it is in present, past or future mentioned above. Time Present past future Moment? teach taught Will teach Moment? Am teaching Was teaching Will be teaching Moment? Have taught Had taught Will have taught Moment? Have been teaching Had been teaching Will have been teaching

We see here that verbs of first row are in present tense but verbs of different rows belong to different moment. What is moment? Moment is particular time or how the verb is being accomplished. We have four moments. These are: 1. Indefinite If we cannot define the time period of a verb definitely 2. Continuous If the verb works continuously 3. Perfect If the verb works up to that time 4. Perfect Continuous If the works continuously with a time period

Now see what moment changes what form of verb ignoring present, past or future form of verb. Indefinite Contunuous Perfect Verb form Verb-ing form Verb-past participle form
